More than 300 people attended the first “Night of Hope”
event, which raised more than $60,000 to support the Cancer
Fund of the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center.

aam luncheon
Raising Awareness and Funds for Mammograms
More than 400 women attended the sixth annual
Mammograms Annually A Must (MAAM) luncheon on
October 14, 2008. More than $10,000 was raised to support
free mammograms for women who cannot afford them. The
chair of the event was Diana Trent and the co-chair was Jean
Yeatts.
MAAM’s mission is to raise awareness of the importance
of yearly mammograms for women over age 40 and to help
fund free mammograms.
MAAM is a volunteer group affiliated with the Centra
Foundation. Many luncheon attendees and MAAM committee
members have been touched by breast cancer and strive to
make a difference in the health of our region.

The Centra Foundation has established a new committee comprised of physicians
to advise the Centra Foundation Board of Directors. The Physician Advisory
Committee has representation from physicians with a broad range of medical
specialties within our health system. The role of the Physician Advisory Committee is
to:
• Advise the foundation on suitable topics for community health education
programs.
• Educate new physicians on the role the foundation plays in supporting Centra’s
projects and programs as well as health initiatives in our community.
• Help identify prospective donors such as grateful patients and friends.
• Identify health-related topics to present to the foundation board at its quarterly

Eight Ways to Make a Bequest... And a Difference
Passing your assets through your will to the people and causes you care about is
easy. Here are accepted ways to make a gift to Centra in your will, known as a bequest.
For additional information on how to establish bequests, please contact your legal
counsel.
Specific bequest. This is a gift of a specific item to a specific beneficiary. For
example, “I gave my golf clubs to my nephew John.” If that specific property has been
disposed of before death, the bequest fails and no claim can be made to any other
property. (In other words, John wouldn’t receive the value of the golf clubs instead.)
General bequest. This is usually a gift of a stated sum of money. It will not fail, even
if there is not sufficient cash to meet the bequest. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my
daughter Mary.” If there is only $2,500 cash in the estate, other assets must be sold to
meet the bequest.
Contingent bequest. This is a bequest made on the condition that a certain event must
occur before distribution to the beneficiary. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my son
Joe, provided he enrolls in college before age 21.” A contingent bequest is specific
in name and fails if the condition is not met. (A contingent bequest is also appropriate
if you want to name a secondary beneficiary, in case the primary beneficiary doesn’t
survive you.)
Residuary bequest. This is a gift of all the “rest, residue and remainder” of your
estate after all other bequests, debts and taxes have been paid. For example, say you
have an estate worth $500,000, and you intend to give a child $50,000 by specific
bequest and leave the balance of the residuary estate to your spouse.
Unrestricted bequest. This is a gift for Centra’s general purpose to be used at the

someone. Centra is pleased to honor your request and has many ways to grant
appropriate recognition.
Endowed bequest. This bequest allows you to restrict the principal of your gift,
requiring Centra to hold the funds permanently and use only a small percentage of the
income the funds generate. Creating an endowment in this manner means that your
