Annual gathering of Catholic women: The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) will gather together on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 at the downtown Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake for their annual convention. This year's theme is, "Campaign For Human Dignity - Love In Action." The keynote speaker will be Maria Suarez, a victim of human trafficking and advocate for women. Her story is an amazing tale of faith, resilience, and courage. The convention is filled with wonderful prayer services, informative speakers, and a special sharing of the spirit and joy of Utah Catholic women! Contact Susan Neilson: 801-224-2692, for more information. Our next Spanish prematrimonial class is at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14. This class is for those couples seeking marriage in the Church. English marriage preparation sessions are available by appointment with either Fr. Dave or Fr. Jose. Some new and some older job opportunities: Development Assistant to provide project coordination and computer and operations assistance for the Office of Stewardship and Development. Custodian to provide general custodial and maintenance services for the administrative offices of the diocese. Sales Advertising Representative with outside sales experience to handle all print and web advertising for the Intermountain Catholic. For further information or to send résumés, please contact Dolores Lopez, Director of Human Resources, [email protected] or fax to 801.328.9680 or mail to Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 7:00 p.m. at Christ the King, 690 South Cove Drive, Cedar City If you have questions or need further information please call the Diocese at 1-888-414-8641 and ask for the Office of Diaconate Formation. This coming Friday at 8:00 p.m. one of the choirs at Brigham Young University, Schola Cantaroum Occidentalis, will offer a concert in the new church. For centuries churches have encouraged culture in their communities and this concert is one way of so doing. Admission is free and there will be an open house/ tour of the church after the concert. It’s a good opportunity to invite friends and neighbors who haven’t already seen our new worship space. The office will be closed this Monday. Both daily Masses and confessions will be canceled as well. Attention leaders of all of our groups: On April 18 at 7:30 p.m. we’re planning on cleaning out the storage rooms in the older building. Several items in these rooms belong to our groups. We need to know if these groups still need these items. Otherwise, we’re planning on filling up a dumpster or two. Thanks for helping our version of Spring cleaning. The celebration of Our Lady of Talpa will be during the regular 6:30 p.m. Mass April 20. Food will be offered after the Mass. All are welcome. One of the connections between Lent and Easter - It’s often repeated that Christ’s death and resurrection are two pieces of the same reality. One does not occur without the other so it makes sense that Lent and Easter, the celebrations of Christ’s death and resurrection, are also part of a whole. One way in which these two liturgical seasons interact and connect has to do with the presence of joy. Here joy is not meant to refer to a flood of pleasant emotions. Joy in this sense comes from a capacity to understand and SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI appreciate the relationship between the parts that form the whole. When we have a perception of how things are in proportion to themselves there enters into our lives a sense of wonder, energy, and joy. Things aren’t quite as random and life isn’t quite as meaningless as it might have first appeared. There’s a satisfaction and a happiness in this. When this sense of proportion is particularly strong we’re able to grasp glimpses of God in the fashion of the mystics. Even when we’re not on the mystics’ level we’re still able to experience joy in the midst of what from the outside might not at all seem to be joyful times. Some people who have lost loved ones report that in the midst of a bone-crushing sorrow there are islands of peace and sometimes even joy. The one who has gone before us no longer has to endure the pain or the fear known before death. The one who has gone before has a greater understanding than we have in the dim light of this world. These are things of proportion and joy. It’s hard to understand how one might be joyful and sorrowful at the same time but that doesn’t mean the experience doesn’t occur. The practices we undertook in Lent - more good deeds, more prayer, more fasting, more almsgiving, or more detachment and dependence on things of the world – might not have seemed very joyful. However, after overcoming the initial reluctance to these works, after casting aside the rationalizations that keep us back, and after having established these things as kind of routines in our lives, we are free to see them in a different light. We may then understand how they connect or build toward the promise of Easter. We see how they are in proportion to Easter and so there is a joy about them. The joy of the perfect relation, the new life, in Easter spills over to what on the outside appear to be unpleasant tasks. Joy connects Lent and Easter, penitence and glory. What appeared a challenge is no longer so. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures for ever (Daniel 3:89).” Congratulations to all those welcomed into the Church through baptism on the Easter Vigil and Easter Day. May they truly experience the transforming power of God in their lives. Report Child Abuse: The Diocese of Salt Lake City is committed to protecting children and young people. If you believe that a child has been subject to abuse and the victim is under age 18 at the time of the report, contact the Division of Child and Family Services at 1-855-323-3237 or the nearest law enforcement agency. In addition, if the alleged abuser is employed by or is a volunteer for the dioceses OR if the victim is now age 18 OR older if the abuse occurred on diocesan property, please contact the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 1-801-328-8641. The actual process of reporting abuse is filled with surprise, worry, sadness, anger, and sometimes doubt. To help better cope with these realities, there are in the book rack in the vestibule of the church pamphlets that walk people through the reporting stage. Everyone is invited to take one or examine one. APRIL 8, 2012 Rejoice and exult: “This is the night that even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones. This is the night, when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed. O wonder of you humble care for us! O love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave you gave away your Son!” -From “The Paschal Proclamation” or the “Exsultet” proclaimed on the night of the Easter Vigil. A special thanks to all who worked to make the Triduum and Easter a success. Thanks to our choirs, our ministers, those who decorated, those who coordinated lists and practices – particularly Julie Boerio-Goates – and everyone who made the liturgies prayerful.
