A media company such as TV Globo has an ongoing challenge that isn’t always visible - to seek excellence, the best results and the best practices beyond what appears on your screen, which is our great showcase. In other words, to create a series of mechanisms that do not appear to the eyes of the general public, but that are fundamental to the company through the programs it broadcasts, fulfilling its mission to inform, entertain and educate with the high quality standards we strive for. In this highly complex context, the concept of sustainable management has gained ground. In fact, it has translated and exposed many of the challenges that corporations face or should face to guarantee the success of their strategies. In our Social Initiatives Report 2010, we seek to expose some of the initiatives that help us build a ratings and market leading television network in a setting under constant transformation, impacted by new technologies, platforms and consumption habits. The strengthening of this leadership - which today places us as the third largest television network in the world - entails a series of ongoing initiatives in the economic, social and environmental fields, all of which converging towards people, which is what truly matters. At one end, we have the talent of our teams as ballast and, on the other, the viewers, with their untouchable and legitimate right to choose. We believe - and aim to demonstrate through our report - that this body of social initiatives has a decisive contribution in making this bridge more solid and relevant. THIS CHAIN ONLY EXISTS WITH YOU Campaign celebrates 25 years of success The great chain of solidarity once again spread throughout the country, marking the 25th edition of the Criança Esperança (Child Hope) campaign. Created in 1986 to mobilize society regarding the issues of Brazil’s childhood and youth, Criança Esperança is a Globo Network project partnered by UNESCO. With the support of the Brazilian population and companies such as Tramontina, Petrobras, Embelleze, Itaú, Credicard, Bradesco and ICAP, the campaign raised R$ 17.3 million in 2010, which will be fully invested in social projects developed in Brazil. Five thousand Redetrel cell phone recharge outlets throughout Brazil were transformed into donation centers for Criança Esperança. Added 04 CRIANÇA ESPERANÇA (CHILD HOPE) to the twenty thousand lottery shops all over the country, these helped diversify the ways to contribute to the campaign, which also counts on the web and telephone. To celebrate the initiative’s 25th anniversary, UNESCO launched the book Criança Esperança: 25 anos criando oportunidades (Child Hope: 25 Years Creating Opportunities), with stories of children whose lives were transformed by the project, testimonials by people who helped consolidate the campaign and a tribute to Dr. Zilda Arns, founder of Pastoral da Criança (Catholic philanthropic organization), a project supported by Criança Esperança since 1986. The launch in October, in São Paulo, brought together entrepreneurs, NGOs and government to debate how each of these sectors can contribute towards the social transformation of Brazil’s children and youngsters. With a distinctive advertising campaign, Criança Esperança also invested in integration with social media: the @criesperanca25 microblog quickly reached the tally of 18 thousand followers; the sites Repositório de Sonhos (Dream Repository) and E você? Doa Por quê? (And you? Why do you donate?) opened space for text and video testimonials by people who participated in the 25 years of Criança Esperança; and a series of documentaries on supported projects, produced exclusively by Central Única das Favelas – CUFA (Cultural Project) for the web was released at Webdocs Esperança. In 2010, Criança Esperança’s resources benefited over 33 thousand children, adolescents and youngsters, supporting 64 Brazil- ian social projects. Over these 25 years, more than R$ 232 million were raised, benefiting over 4 million children, youngsters and adolescents and 5 thousand projects.
