Anniversary
May 2010 marks my second anniversary
with WCLM 1450AM. Two years ago, the
staff and management welcomed me, a
newcomer to radio with open arms to
share the airwaves with legends of
Richmond radio, Chocolate Chip, Kirby
Carmichael, Ben Miles, Kim Ocasio, my
engineer, technical guru and friend
ElBravador and station CEO Preston Brown.
To be given this platform without
censorship or review is a privilege that very
few writers and radio commentators can
claim. Tanya’s Tips, my social and political commentary
has touched on a host of topics including health care
reform, economic and racial disparities and the effects of
conservative talk media outlets to name a few. We
reveled in President Obama’s victory, but called for action
when we disagreed with his policies. Many of you have
discussed and debated my commentaries on
TanyaFree.com. While the topics are sometimes
controversial, I have strived to approach subjects that are
topical and relevant. While many of you often disagree
with me, it is refreshing to have a forum that promotes
dialogue with many points of view.

Pastor Scarbrough says after being on WCLM Radio with the
freedom to preach the truth, he feels no need to contiune his show
on WREJ 1540. It’s not the same.
At WCLM I feel I’m part of the community and I can reachout and
talk to the community.I have learned a lot by being there. I learned
about being and understanding how to be Black. I began to learn
Richmond History and the struggle of the Black community. I have
learned and I can see through phony people.I thought when I was
on WREJ 1540 I was doing something ,but I realize I was just a
cash cow like the rest of the preachers over there paying $150.00
for 15minutes and my sales representive telling me no one listens
to WCLM1450. I’m telling you a lot of people listen to WCLM.
I learned doing Black History month that WREJ 1540 don’t care
about the black community. The only reason they let me back on
the radio was to stop me from talking about WREJ 1540 because I
was exposing them .They didn’t even want to pay $2.00 for a
picture of Martin Luther King.
I learned that two Black Doctors once owned WREJ and they
couldn’t get enough support from the Black Preachers. As soon as
White’ s purchased the station the preachers were knocking the
door down to get on. Some left Black own WFTH 1590 including
Pastor Larry Branch to be there and pay more.
Judge ordered Ann Soul Food restaurant closed
Richmond Police have identified the rider of the
motorcycle involved in the fatal crash on 25th street as 27-year-old Thomas
U. Johnson of the 900 block of North 27th Street, Richmond. Police say they
are still investigating the circumstances of the accident. It happened near
the roundabout at 25th and M Streets around 12:30 Saturday morning.
Several sources on scene says that when police attempted to pull over a
motorcycle for hot rodding, or showing off through Shockoe Bottom, the
biker appeared to speed off and eventually crashed in Church Hill. There are
reports of gunshots fired right before the crash, some say police cars were
several blocks behind, and there are all kinds of stories circulating. Who
knows what really happen, what we do know is it shouldn’t had happen.
There are several cameras posted down in Shockoe Bottom if he was hot
rodding they may have him on tape and they could have gotten him later or
what about writing his tag number down? The impact of the crash sent the
bike skidding more than half a block from the accident scene.
April Crusade For Voters meeting still a mess!
The Crusade For Voters has to decide on whether they are going to serve the community, as was
done in the past or cater to political influences. The meeting established that many members do
not have or know the organizations Bylaws. The newly elected president attempted to appoint
certain committee chairs and was informed, that they needed to nominate and elect a new 1 st and
2nd Vice President and a chaplain. This motion exposed the fact that many did not know their
bylaws and that there is still a division within the organization that has hurt the original mission
of the organization and its growth. Who would want to be part of an organization that has not
taken the time to make sure that all members are aware of their Bylaws and Mission? Who wants
to be a part of an organization that does not respect its governing laws or discipline? When the
Crusade for voters has a meeting that will educate all their members on their Bylaws and how
they operate in the 21st century, then they will be more than a brand name with no teeth.

The Gospel Music Workshop Virginia Announcers Guild (GAG) April meeting a no –show
Authorities allege that Ann Soul Food owner Alexander Sally
would allow people to sell drugs in the restaurant. A Richmond
Judge ordered Ann’s Soul Food closed, one prosector labeled it a
“drug haven”. Drug dealers have been selling on Broad Street and
Second Street for the last 25 years.
Drug sales are made in many clubs in Richmond. That block on
Broad Street has always had a lot of people hanging in front of the
stores, even as far back as the United Surplus and Rainbows Store
days. Create some jobs and people hanging out trying to hustle
some money would have something to do.
The Virginia GAG under the leadership of Ed Stephens has been having problems for more than
a year. Stephens has battled with several members that have cause membership to drop so low
that the April meeting was canceled when only 3 board members showed up. Stephens started as
President with only 5 members and grew to around 100 members.
GAG President Ed Stephens says new people are interested in joining soon and he’s ready to
rebuild the GAG.

After 40 years Hanging up His
Clippers.
Herbert “Doe” Massenburg is hanging up his magic clippers after
cutting hair for more than 40 years. When visiting his shop,
Massenburg, who prefers to be called “Doe”, would give more
than a haircut he proudly deliver inner city life lessons to his
customers. He openly discussed growing up in Sussex, County,
his past failures, incarceration and demons. He would tell young
people not to follow in his path and to understand the risk
involved. Doe never blame anyone for his mistakes, but himself.
On any given day, you could visit his shop and hear beautiful old
school soul music blurring from the radio or watch the
Temptations on DVD.

He would be quick to point out that Paul Williams was the best
dancer and vocalist in the Temptations. In the same conversation
he would tell you about the famous actors, politicians and leaders
who visited his establishment or what movie was being filmed in
Walnut Alley located next to the barbershop.
His shops was where you could take a nostalgic look at the past
and observe photographs of the 60’s recording group the Jarmels
and find posters of upcoming plays, football games and gambling
trips. Yes, Doe is retiring, but he is leaving the shop in excellent
hands. The shop will be operated by two capable barbers who
have learned several life lessons from Doe, including, close the
door when you enter, profanity is prohibited in front of women or
children and speak when you enter the door. Most of Doe’s
customers will miss him, but the inner city mentoring will
continue. The shop will continue to be a place where everybody
knows your name and where men can be men.

LEGACY OF Rev. Ike
Eikerenkoetter died from complications resulting from a stroke in 2007. Known for his garish clothing and jewelry, Eikerenkoetter is remembered for witty remarks such as,
“The Bible says Jesus rode on a borrowed ass. But, I would rather ride in a Rolls Royce than to ride somebody’s ass!”
He was an articulate and dynamic speaker with a handsome and winsome personage to whom followers were attracted by his self-confidence and inspirational claims that they
too could be like Reverend Ike.
While Eikerenkoetter preached a message of material prosperity to his majority middle-class and low-income African-American flock, his beginning in Ridgeland, S.C. was
humble.
Eikerenkoetter was born on June 1, 1935 to a Dutch-Indonesian father, who was a Baptist minister, and a black school teacher. He got the “calling” to preach around age 9.
Eikerenkoetter said that he felt the traditional Christian ministries were too constricting and instilled poverty among its members by supporting messages of piety.
At 14, he became the assistant pastor of his father’s church, Bible Way Baptist in Ridgeland, and by 21 had earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from the American Bible
College in Chicago, Ill.
After two years in the Air Force, Eikerenkoetter started a ministry at the old Sunset movie house on Harlem’s 125th Street. He built a congregation based on faith-healing,
coupled with positive self-imaging. Eikerenkoetter often bragged to his televised ministry that he owned 16 mink-lined Rolls Royce, wore $1,000 suits and sported diamond
rings on both of his hands.
In the early 1970s, Eikerenkoetter’s ministry was among the first televangelists shows in the world. He reached millions of households each week. Eikerenkoetter reportedly
owned lavish mansions on both the East and West Coasts and estimated his yearly income to range between $6-and-15 million primarily from donations mailed to the
television ministry. His main source of income in his early days was the sale of “prayer cloths,’” that continue today to be sold in a set of two for $10.00 on his organization’s
web site. Purchasers of the cloths were promised that Reverend Ike would pray for them and that if they believed strong enough in him they too would have prosperity by
continuing to send money to reverend Ike. He was an early example of the power of the electronic preacher to raise money with techniques later perfected by Jim and Tammy
Baker, Pat Robertson, Jerry Farwell, T.D Jakes, Creflow Dollar, Fred Price and other latter-day televangelists. At the height of his success, Eikerenkoetter admonished the
faithful that he only accepted cash offerings and did not “appreciate the sound of loose change in the offering plate.”
He was most famous for his slogan “you can’t lose with the stuff I use!” That “stuff” included a fleet of Rolls Royce automobiles that he shamelessly collected and displayed to
prove to his followers that wealth followed whomever could use a silver tongue to cajole money from trusting followers.
He fully restored and owned the Christ United Church “Palace Cathedral” in Manhattan’s Washington Heights section.

In Al Green’s own words; “Mary was a radiant and ravishing
woman. Mary had a classy way of carrying herself: she was
statuesque graceful and proud. Mary had all kinds of secrets, more
that I could have imagined at the time.
But Mary didn’t fall under my spell quite so easily. She was pretty
and I like having pretty women around me.” But Mary had other
things on her mind, right from the beginning. She was a real
woman, I loved the smell of her perfume, and she was new and
exciting.
After my tour, I returned home to Memphis, Mary was in town.
The infatuation I had for her blinded me to all the warning signs. I
didn’t care where she had come from or the baggage she’d picked
up along the way. When I asked her about her past, she lied and
told me that she had never been married and of course she didn’t
have any kids. The truth was, Mary had left behind a whole family
in New Jersey to come and be with me but I’d only find that out
later, after it was way too late.
Soon, her husband had come down from New Jersey to bring back.
She refused but he wasn’t going to let her go and made it clear that
she belonged to him and their children. She was living out a
fantasy on borrowed time.
One night, I was in the studio working on new material when the
door opened and a good looking woman rushed in and gave me a
hug. It took me a minute to recognize her, her name was Carlotta
Williams, a flight attendant I’d met on my travels.
When Mary came to the studio later, I introduced the two women
and suggested that we all go back to my house. The women
seemed to get along fine as we all piled in my Rolls Royce.
Carlotta sat up front with me and Mary sat in the back.
I kept glancing at Mary through the rearview mirror, disturbed by
the strange expression she had on her face. Once she caught me
looking at her and fixed me with a cold, apprasing stare that sat my
nerves on edge.
I went to my room to change my clothes. When I went to the
kitchen, Mary was standing at the stove, stirring a big pot of water
with a wooden spoon. She turned around and asked me had I ever
thought about getting married, I replied, “Maybe we should talk
about that in the morning.” When I asked her what she was
cooking, she didn’t answer me. Then suddenly, she whispered in
my ear, “I would never do anything to hurt you.’
Carlotta was in another part of the house listening to music. I then
decided to take a bath. After I got in the tub, I soon heard a noise, I
looked up and Mary was standing with the streaming pot in both
hands. In the next second, my world explored into a thousand
splatters of pure agony. Mary had added grits to the water, making
a thick, boiling hot paste. With all her strength, she hurled it at me.
The grit scorched my naked back. The pain was so intense that I
started screaming. Carlotta called an ambulance and was tending to
me as best she could-when suddenly, we heard a gunshot. Despite
being in pain, I rushed to Mary; she lay on the floor dead,
clutching a gun.
Joe Tex and James Brown Feud
Joe Tex was not only an electrifying entertainer with a phenomenal
stage show; he was also an accomplished songwriter who penned
two of his biggest hits, “I Gotcha” and “Ain’t Gonna Bump No
More with No Fat woman.” In Soul Train’s early years, Tex was
their biggest draw. He got bigger audience than James Brown. His
dance routines (with a rigged mic) accompanied by Soul Train
dancer Damita Jo Freeman are still discussed at Soul Train
reunions.
A feud between Tex and James Brown started on tour when
Brown accused Tex of copying his stage moves. Brown also
began dating Tex’s wife. In response, Tex wrote a song called
“You keep her”. They played a few more shows together until
Tex mocked James Brown act of throwing a cape over his
shoulder and screaming “Please get m out of this cape. Brown
later fired a gun a Tex in a night club. On August 13, 1982 Joe
Tex died at his home in Navasota, Texas following a heart attack
just 5 days after his 49th birthday.
Singer Miki Howard and late Gerald Levert were once
romantically involved, and that romance spawned one of Howard’s
biggest hits, “Love Under New Management.” The song was
written during their brief love affair, but was released after their
romance had dissolved.

Roy Hammond, aka "Roy-C", is a legendary soul singer with talents that far exceed the moderate attention he's
gotten since his start back in 1958. He sang in a vocal group called The Genies and scored a minor hit with
"Who's That Knocking" (#72 pop). He led a vocal group called Mark 4. He had huge hit with "Shotgun Wedding"
(#14 R & B) and released his first album in 1966, "That Shotgun Wedding Man". He's been on labels including
Smash, Black Hawk, Shout, Alaga, Mercury, and 3 Gems. He even recorded a single called "I Want To Marry
You" as "Little Frankie". In 1973 Roy tasted some more commercial success when his mercury album "Sex &
Soul" charted at #56 (R & B) and the follow up "Something Nice" spawned three minor hit singles... To date
he's waxed some 15 albums for the label and enjoys a faithful Southern following and deep respect from the
genre. Roy-C is an authentic soul man in an era that has too few.

Ed Stephens celebrated his 25 anniversary in radio April 10 at the new Center Stage.
The show was one of the best gospel shows to hit Richmond in a while, with only about 300 people coming out.
Stephens said he was glad to have done the show and he wanted to be the first gospel show at the newly
remodeled Center Stage.

Former 70th District House of Delegates candidate
Henry Otis Brown joins with WCLM to form an
Exploratory Committee.
Henry Otis Brown announces that WCLM has
agreed to join him to form an exploratory committee
to seek and campaign to encourage the Black
community to work to regain ownership and control
of previously Black owned Consolidated bank which
has served the community for over 100 years.
We need to begin to work now because our black
bank gave the Black community sense of pride and a
bank is key to the community for economic
development and recovery said Brown, a local
attorney and businessman. Brown urged all citizens
to include voters, church organizations and civic
groups to support him and WCLM efforts to return
ownership and control back to Blacks.

Greetings,
This letter is a response of the meeting that was held in
March. We have not gotten any feedback in reference to the
recommendation or any correspondence on the
recommendation. We have reached out in good faith and it
appears this administration responds the same way that the
opposition party does. We will seek a meeting with the
Mayor and continue to promote the HUD Tool to the
community. Since Mr. Chapman has acknowledged that
after receiving over 3 dozen calls he stopped listening and
came up with a process that is just a delay tactic. There are
businesses and journey men who can perform NOW! To
only suggest training to establish a work force for out of
state developers just goes against everything we are
attempting to help enhance. So, I will have the community
contact their Mayor and Council Persons. We will
engage by informing the community and making sure they
have their representative’s numbers and consumer alert
notification on the radio and Heart and Soul Newspaper.
We had looked forward to working with you but it seems
we need to make direct contact with the Mayor. If the
Mayor does not get it, then the Democratic Party is over.
That is not a threat but a fact look at the Governor's race
result. We are still knocking at the door and still no answer.
Recommendations:
1) Independent entity - this business works with the
city's section 3 representatives in RRHA, community
development and MBD contract Compliance Specialist and
the residents and business concerns. Seats at the table
during the planning stage to identify certain job
opportunities.
2) Independent entity and city establish city wide
registration - This allows the residents and business to
already be certified which is for 3 years.
3) Independent entity - coordinates with the section 3
residents and concerns on any enhancements in program
and promotions
4) Funds to support the independent entity can come during
the planning stages.
We are still recommending KSK as the independent entity
because Mr. Khalfana already has the network of media
and ear of the community. We know he will man up and
make sure that the process is a win win situation for the
city. I pray that the Mayor is receptive to this input and the
administration does not turn this into something that it is
not.
We will begin this stage of ENGAGEMENT next week.

All three men were sentenced to 20 years to life.
Mr. Hagan said in a 1977 affidavit that he and
several accomplices (not Mr. Aziz or Mr. Islam)
decided to kill Malcolm X because he was a
“hypocrite” who had “gone against the leader of
the Nation of Islam,” Elijah Muhammad. Mr.
Hagan said that after one man shot Malcolm X
in the chest with a shotgun, he and another man
fired several more rounds at him.
Mr. Aziz was paroled in 1985, and in 1998 was
named by Louis Farrakhan to be chief of security
Thomas Hagan has been held since moments
after shots rang out in the Audubon Ballroom in
1965. He has been on work release for more than
two decades, but he still spends two days a week
locked up at the Lincoln Correctional Facility on
West 110th Street in Manhattan.
On March 3, however, on his 17th try, Mr. Hagan
was granted parole, the State Division of Parole
said. His final release date is tentatively
scheduled for April 28.
Mr. Hagan, who turned 69 this year, was a
militant member of the Nation of Islam on Feb.
21, 1965, when Malcolm X was shot while giving
a speech at the Audubon, in Washington
Heights. Mr. Hagan, then known as Talmadge X.
Hayer, was captured by the crowd and shot at
and beaten before being rescued by the police.
Two other men, Muhammad Abdul Aziz (then
known as Norman 3X Butler) and Kahlil Islam
(then Thomas 15X Johnson), were also charged
with the murder. They maintained their
innocence. Mr. Hagan did not, testifying at his
trial in 1966 that he was responsible for the
for the Harlem mosque that Malcolm X once
headed. Mr. Islam was paroled in 1987.
Mr. Hagan, who earned a master’s degree while
in prison, according to a 2008 profile in The
New York Post, was placed on work release in
1988. In 2008, he was spending his free days
with his wife and children in Sunset Park,
Brooklyn, and working in a fast food restaurant.
“I’ve been incarcerated for 40 years, and I’ve had
a good record all around,” he told The Post. “I
don’t see any reason for holding me.”

Dr. Leonard L. Edloe
Dr. Leonard L. Edloe is a pharmacist and Chief Executive Officer
of Edloe's Professional Pharmacies, one of America’s largest
chain of black owned pharmacies located in Richmond, Virginia,
and Pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church, Susan, Virginia. He is a
native of Richmond and a graduate of Armstrong High School.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Howard
University School of Pharmacy, a Master of Divinity from the
Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union
University, and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University
of Florida, School of Pharmacy. He serves as an Assistant
Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the Hampton University School
of Pharmacy, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Policy and
Research at the MCV-VCU School of Pharmacy, and a Clinical
Instructor of Pharmacy at the Howard University School of
Pharmacy. He also was the Executive-In-Residence at the
Longwood University College of Business and Economics for the
school year 2004-2005.
Dr. Edloe has been active in many community and national
organizations. He has served as President of the Church Hill
Model Cities Program, President of the Richmond Urban League,
Chairman of the Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau,
Chairman of Main St 25 Inc., Chairman of the Board of Health for
the City of Richmond and he was the first black chairman of the
board of the Retail Merchants Association of Greater Richmond.
Having a passion for better health, he serves on the board of the
Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate
of the American Heart Association where he is chairman and also
leads their Power to End Stroke Initiative, the VCU Health
System Authority, Virginia Premier and the National Kidney
Foundation of the Virginias. He has the distinction of being one
the youngest pharmacist every elected to the Board of Trustees
of the American Pharmacists Association. He is a 33rd Degree
Mason and served as the Worshipful Grand Chaplain of the M.W.
Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the State of Virginia.
Rev. Edloe is the recipient of many awards, Who’s Who in
America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care, Distinguished
Retail of the Year, Virginia’s Retailer of the Year, Dominion’s
Strong Men, the Cure, Care, Commitment Award of the American
Diabetic Association, African American Trailblazer, The Bowl of
Hygeia ; just to list a few. He is the author of numerous articles
and has made numerous presentations on health and economic
development. He resides in Mechanicsville with his wife Serita.

Jack Gravely
The former executive secretary of the Virginia NAACP in the
1970s and 1980s Gravely was a familiar voice on civil-rights matters,
rarely avoiding the opportunity to share an opinion or offer a quip. Those
days are gone, but Gravely's voice is back on a daily talk show on WLEEAM (990).He's happy to engage in discussions on just about anything -- his
catch-phrase: "If you live it, we will talk it" -- but he wants to make one
thing clear."I've never felt comfortable with, 'Oh, you're the black talkshow host,'" I'm a talk-show host who happens to be black."I always loved
radio. I guess deep down, I had this, 'I'd like to do that.
While executive secretary he wanted the NAACP to be more visible and
more political, though not necessarily in a partisan way, and it rubbed some
people in the organization the wrong way. Under Gravely's leadership, the
NAACP conducted voter-registration drives, led the call for single-member
districts in the General Assembly and developed surveys to determine the
extent of minority representation in cities, towns and counties across the
state. He still speaks in awe of the opportunity he had to get to know -- and
learn from -- civil-rights pioneers such as Oliver W. Hill Sr. and Samuel
W. Tucker. However, he resigned from the state NAACP in 1984.By then,
he was already working radio. Later, Gravely had his own program, a
three-hour talk show on Saturday nights, from 1996 to 2001, when new
management cleared out much of the station's local talent, including him.
Funny thing, while Gravely was doing the Saturday night show he wasn't
living full time in Richmond. He'd moved north to work first in Arlington
County as a special assistant to the county manager, then at National Public
Radio as special assistant to the president for affirmative action, then to
Baltimore to work at the NAACP national headquarters. He also returned
to the Virginia NAACP to serve for a time as president of its board. Most
recently, he was director of diversity for the Federal Communications
Commission, a position he held for 13 years and retired from.
Gravely prepares for his show by reading newspapers, books and
academic reports. He spends several hours each afternoon on the Internet,
researching topics for upcoming programs. He routinely shows up at the
studio each morning with eight to 12 issues to throw out to listeners."If
they bite, fine," he said. "If they don't, I'll go with the flow."
Gravely lives in Petersburg with his wife, Barbara. He has three grown
daughters from his first marriage and a son from a relationship in college.
He and Barbara, a retired teacher, have been married 14 years. They like to
travel and to garden. He finds great satisfaction tending his vegetable
garden. He also finds great satisfaction in being part of the daily
conversation in Richmond again. Gravely wants his show to be syndicated
around the country. But he doesn't want to go anywhere."I want to do a
talk show from down South," he said. "I don't want to be up North. I want
to stay here. I have no desire to go to Washington or New York. I don't
want to commute. I've run the roads for 30 or 35 years."If it comes down to
that, I'll just go over to Virginia State University and teach a couple of
classes, live in Petersburg and raise my tomatoes."

The Heart and Soul “Believe It or Not”…….
Black Man was Ku Klux
Klan Leader
For half a century, from 1870
to 1920, a black man lived in
Rock Hill who was a remarkable
leader, admired by both blacks
and whites. J. Henry Toole was
born about 1852 in North
Carolina.
As soon as Toole arrived in
town, he opened Rock Hill’s first
barber shop, which was for
white men only. Each customer
had his own shaving mug with
gold lettering. No doubt this
allowed Toole to gather much
useful information from the
town’s business community.
In 1872, Toole was arrested
with 194 others by Union
officers and charged with being
a member of the Ku Klus Klan.
For 41 days, Toole shared a
Yorkville jail cell with Capt.
Iredell Jones of Mount Gallant
plantation and Samuel Fewell of
Ebenezer. He was not charged
but the three other black men
arrested at the same time were
sent to Columbia for
prosecution.
In 1876, the S.C. Democratic
Party endorsed the Confederate
hero Gen. Wade Hampton for
S.C. governor with rallies and
parades by white men sporting
red shirts. Hampton was
present in Rock Hill to launch
the parade. The rock hill Red
Shirts, a group organized to
remove federal troops from the
state during Reconstruction,
included a cavalry unit of black
men led by Toole.
Toole was the only black
Episcopalian in Rock Hill until
the Rev. Edmond Joyner
established St.Paul’s mission for
Blacks on West Black Street in
1884. Toole became the leader
of the mission, which operated
a Sunday school, and trade and
day school. The mission closed
in 1921, shortly after Toole’s
death.
In 1894, Toole sought a position
as Register of deeds for the
District of Columbia, but he did
not get the job. Toole probably
was attracted to Washington
because he had a brother, Gary
Toole, who was President
Cleveland’s personal barber.
Toole was one of the founders
of Rock Hill’s first black
newspaper, the Rock Hill
Messenger.
When Toole endorsed the Rev.
P.J.Drayton to be president of
Claflin College in Orangeburg,
C.P.T. White, editor of the
Messenger, thundered against
him. White wrote that he was
voicing the “sentiments of every
self-respecting colored citizen in
South Carolina “who would rise
up against the recommendation
by a “Negro Democrat, a Ku
Klux…” Toole, calling the
editorial “malicious slander”
sued White for $5,000 and case
was settled out of court.
The 1913, the Rock Hill
Directory stated that Toole
owned a grocery store at 101
Main Street. In 1913-1915,
Toole petitioned for black
school and offered three rooms
in a building he owned.
Toole died Oct.15, 1920. The
funeral was at the Church of
Our Savior with assistance by
the pastors of First Presbyterian
and St. John’s Methodist. The
honorary pall bearers were
Gilbert Greene, John Roddey,
Ben Fewell, Henry Massey,
Capt. J.W.Marshall, John Black,
Julius Friedheim, W.W. Gill,
David Hutchison and Col.
W.J.Rawlinson, all of whom
were white business leaders, an
indication of the high status
that Toole attained with that
group.
Greed, Scandal, Aids & Homosexuality
in the Black Church
We have been informed that some black churches have ATM
machines-and many of these churches request your W-2 form to
determine how much you can give while other churches debit
your checking account for monthly church donations.
People are also complaining that collection plates are being
passed around at a record pace and the more you give, the closer
you sit to the pulpit.
The Shadow Knows
Black slave owners………..
In many instances, free black slave owners shared a similar view
of slavery with their white counterparts. Slave owners of both
races occasionally manumitted a trusted servant and in the same
moment requested the sale of another slave. The act of freeing
one or several slaves while others remained in bondage did not
constitute a firm commitment against slavery, but a personal
view which acknowledged that some slaves, through merit or
hard work, deserved their freedom, while others were destined to
be slaves until death. So when philanthropic free blacks
purchased slaves and then emancipated them, they were not
always paternalistic owners as Carter G. Woodson suggested.
For example, Richard Holloway, Sr., a free black of Charleston
City, bought a slave named Charles Benford in order that the
slave might enjoy his freedom. Yet at the same time, he owned
other slaves who were not treated so kindly. In 1834, for
instance, he purchased a Negro woman named Sarah and her two
children, Annett and Edward, from Susan B. Robertson for $575.
Within three years after the purchase, he apparently became
dissatisfied with the slave family and sold them for $945. Even
though Richard Holloway, Sr., allowed a trusted servant to enjoy
a greater degree of freedom, he was still a slave-owner for profit.
So he sold and purchased slaves as an investment even while he
held other slaves for benevolent reasons. To consider him a
benevolent master would be erroneous because he also exploited
other slaves for his own benefit.
We have heard stories of ministers preying on young single
women and embezzling church funds. These same ministers
drive fancy cars and live in fancy mansions with their wives and
children.
A church scandal broke involving Bishop Terry Hornbuckle
(based in Texas) who was convicted of drugging and raping three
women (two of them former church members). By day,
Hornbuckle lived in a $750,000 mansion with his wife, by night;
he was a sexual predator who preyed on church women.
Hornbuckle was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
We now have gospel TV personalities who dress more like pimps
than men of the cloth. The “Gospel” has become big business, a
multi-billion dollar business and crooks & con men are flocking
to the church in record numbers.
We have also heard rumors regarding some of the gospel
workshops being held across the country-where people in the
gospel community offer to mentor your child if they have
musical talent. An incident occurred, when a mother became
concerned about the attention an obviously gay man was giving
her son. He had offered to mentor him and he had connections
that would have helped her son’s career but she passed on the
opportunity because something just didn’t seem right, especially
when he began calling her underage son all hours of the night
and sending him gifts.
Despite the fact that AIDS is ravaging black communities across
this nation, the majority of black churches will not address this
issue due to homophobic attitudes. Instead, they should be
informing people of safe sex methods while passing out literature
and pamphlets.
Downlow behavior is not confined to men in the gospel
community. There are female gospel stars, which are having
“female affairs” on the side, and some are married.
We are not implying or suggesting that all black churches are bad
and that all black ministers are crooked and that gospel
workshops are breeding ground for sedution. This is to let you
