Vol. 55 Edition 8 The MATTHEW 5:14 august 2014 Messenger “Here am I. Send me!” Upcoming sermons Dear Saints, Welcome to another edition of the Memorial Baptist Church’s Messenger newsletter. This is the beginning of the eighth month of the fourteenth year after Y2K (angst remembrance) or as everyone else likes to put it…August 2014. This year is clipping by pretty fast so if you are going to do something this summer, you better get after it. I would like to take a moment and welcome on board our newest staff member. David Mace has agreed to be our interim music and worship leader while we seek the direction and person that God has for us. David is a talented musician and worship leader. God always knows our needs even before we ask. I am very grateful to David and his family for their willingness to come and serve our Lord here at Memorial. Welcome aboard David and the entire Mace family! Colossians 3:15 says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.” Our Youth Pastor Jordan Jones is doing a great job leading our youth and college ministries. Special thanks are in order to folks like Brian and Tamara Massingill as well as Ray and Carrol Dubcak who volunteer assisting Pastor Jones by giving of their time and resources in both of these areas, respectively. We are excited about the possibilities that God is giving us for continued growth in these constantly fertile fields. Our Children’s minister Kacie Hill has been platinum in her ambitious hunt for new children and families. She also has been investing in some great relationships with our children and their parents. Way to go, Kacie! Keep up the good work. Journey Kids will be kicking off again, after school starts back up, so be ready to volunteer, and get involved! august 3 Holding On to the Teachings august 10 Receiving What Only God Can Give august 17 Warning the World for Christ august 24 Caring Enough to Confront august 31 Saying the Blessing Laurie Deaver, our ministry assistant and financial secretary, has also been busy this year and is looking forward this month to taking a week or two of much needed vacation. We would like to be able to keep you up to date with information and stay up to date with you! 4 coming home During the first week of July we took the High school and Junior High students to Youth camp at Camp Zephyr in Corpus Christi. What an amazing week! The students experienced an incredible time of growth and commitment! They engaged with other student believers in Bible Study, recreation and wonderful times of praising God together through song! The theme of the week was Identity, specifically our identity in Christ as a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17) The students received the Word of God through great teaching by Youth Pastor from Round Rock, Texas, Allen Frans. Several of our students made commitments to follow Jesus in Baptism, while others committed to sharing their faith with their friends and being a light in the darkness! Watching our students respond was such a wonder and joy for the student leaders, my wife, and me! And now we have come home. I’ve often heard of camp referred to as a “mountain-top experience”. Students go away and come back from camp ready to go and fired up… and the fire dies. So we chalk that up to mountain-top experiences and “camp-highs” and we shrug it off never asking ourselves if there is more to it than that! I see in our students, however, a desire to change; to grow and be different. We blame the lack of change in our students on the world. We say that they get energized at camp, and come back to the “Real World” and that is what steals their fire away. But what if it’s the fact that they get back to their church and nothing has changed here? What if it’s that our students desire to grow, but we don’t give them the opportunity to grow? Our students spend a whole week praising God with the music of their generation and even more importantly, with people who are interested in investing in them directly because they are the next generation of believers to shine as lights in a dark world. And then they get back, and their church is the same as it has ever been! Who will be glad to share in this next generations praises of God?! Who will be overjoyed to share in making them disciples of Jesus!? The Youth Pastor can’t do it on his own. It takes a whole church being involved and interested in the discipleship of this generation of young people! Who will be invested enough to make the sacrifices necessary to connect with this generation so that the fire doesn’t die when they return home from camp!? Is it you?! Jordan Jones, Student Pastor 5 be one, as the body of Christ As we come to serve and to worship together, my prayer for our church family is that we love each other as Christ loves us. Paul says in Romans 15:5-6, “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” As we begin to minister, our goal is not to have the best choir in town, the most polished praise band, or the newest, chart-topping music. Our desire is to be one, as the body of Christ, and to glorify our God. Jesus prayed in John 17, “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. My family is blessed to be a part of the work that God is doing through MBC, and we have witnessed your love for each other in action. Thank you for loving us as Christ loves. Let us continue to grow in unity, and to love the people of our community. david mace, interim music minister on the road August is almost upon us. My girls and I will be taking a week off for vacation in August. They are counting the days and have begun to mentally pack! We are planning on going to Amarillo, Groom, Fort Worth, Waco, and Glen Rose, Texas. The 5th & 6th grade Sunday school class of Memorial Baptist Church had the honor of visiting Dorothy Prinzing. What a delightful visit this was. Cailin Powell and Emaleigh Layton found out that she has been a member for almost 80 years!!! They could not believe it. They found this out in addition to the many other questions they had for her. On her fireplace she has a small toy stove. This is the same stove that her Dad got her after he took her to the dentist. If you get a chance to visit her, ask her about the toy stove. We will be visiting someone else this month, who will it be? Laurie deaver, finance 6 summer happenings Greetings Church Family!!!! Summer is almost over! Which means students go back to school and routines begin! This summer has been a blast. iCan camp was a fun packed program that each child had a thirst for. VBS was a huge success -- 9 kids accepted Christ! At the block party we baptized kids, youth, and a family. Plus many members expressed a new found joy of hanging out with our church family beyond the 4 walls of our beautiful building. We took 5 young ladies to Kidz Kamp. None of them have ever been to camp before and they all want to go back next year! As the summer passes I have seen some God changes in our church. One is community growth. We have a team going, knocking on doors, and praying for our neighbors. We have seen more baptisms this summer than during the school year. Plus we have some new fantastic members in our church. Another God change I’ve seen is people stepping up. Maybe members have always done this and I’m just now seeing it, but to me it seems like more and more people are finding ways to serve in our church and being a part of His kingdom purpose. Another God change I see, especially in the children’s ministry, is the amount of seeking happening. I have had many questions asked of me about salvation, what happens to people who don’t believe, what is sin, how do you stop sinning after you have accepted Christ, what is baptism, does baptism save you, what is the Holy Spirit, and the list goes on and on and on. These kids are searching for answers! I’m so happy to be part of a church family that can answer them in truth. I can’t wait to see how these God sized changes are going to be played out in His kingdom work this coming fall season and into next year. We must remember to always keep God as our focus and purpose. He is the one who gets all the glory and honor, for without Him nothing is possible. This summer wouldn’t have been as awesome without Him! Go GOD! Living to share His story, Kacie hill, children’s minister 7 Wanted: Pre-School (ages 3-4) Sunday School teacher starting August 24th august CALENDAR 3rd 12th 15th 16th 18th 22nd 23rd 24th 25th 31st WEEKLY SCHEDULE College Scholarship Applications Due 12:00 pm Women of Faith Information Luncheon 6:00 PM Finance Meeting 7:00 PM Deacons Meeting Church office closed 9:00 AM Good News Trainin @ Skyline Baptist Church (Killeen) Student Fair Temple College 11:00 AM New Student Fair @ UMHB 9:30 AM Feed My Sheep Promotion Sunday: Round Up Texas 6:00 PM Church Conference School Begins CTLC 5th Sunday Monetary Offering SUNDAY MORNING 8:45 A.M. - Prayer with Pastor 9:30 A.M. - Sunday School 10:45 A.M. - Worship SUNDAY EVENING 6:00 P.M. - Worship TUESDAY 7:00 A.M. - Prayer Meeting 9:00 A.M. - Staff Meeting WEDNESDAY We will not have Zumba from August 5 through August 26. Your generosity was overwhelming and a blessing to us in so many ways. We were able to cover all our living expenses here in the states for the last month and a half as well as expenses for our first month here in China before my first pay check. We also greatly enjoyed our fellowship. It was so nice to get to hang out with everyone, all the food was delicious and the hospitality committee did a great job with set up and decorations. Finally, thank you for the commitment y’all made to support us through prayer. This is the most important thing and we appreciate it so much. Y’all are in our thoughts and Prayers. We already miss you. Keep loving God, loving others, and serving the world with everything you’ve got. May the grace of Christ our Savior, the love of God our Father, and the fellowship of the Spirit be with you. Thanks and Blessings, Rick, Trish, Zeke, and Obie Emerson 9 kentucky mission trip The following church members were a part of the mission team to Lynch, KY from July 5th thru 12th. Julie Deaver, Ron McGill, Lori McGill, Robert Trevino, Olivia Trevino, Hanna Trevino, PaulGonzales, Arianna Gonzales, Cailin Powell, Bruce Waldock, Willie Prater, Cheryl Prater, Bethany Prater, Kevin Looker, Kayleah Trevino, Jim McDougall, Monica McDougall, Wilna Shumate and Joel Shumate. The team, like a church body, consisted of people with different gifts including those who prepared our meals (Kevin and his assistant Jim), those who worked in construction (Bruce, Willie, Robert and Paul) and those who spent time with the kids in the park (Wilna headed up this groupKayleah and Hanna told Bible storiesOlivia, Julie and Cailin helped with the gamesBethany headed up the songsLori, Cheryl and Monica helped to chaperone and corral the kids and also visited with parents, grandma’s of the kids and others in the neighborhood) Ron spent lots of the time running errands and helped with constructionI helped with construction, shared the gospel with the kids and tried to keep everything running as smoothly as possible. Each person had a definite job and everyone did their job to the best of their abilities. Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Little did I know that God had been working to set this trip up in such a way that would take care of all that we were about to experience. Only 2 hours into our trip we had a fuel pump problem with the church bus. After getting it diagnosed and determining that we could not go any further in it, we had to make some decisions. Several phone calls were made to see CONTINUED NEXT PAGE if it was possible to borrow another church’s bus or van without any favorable results. Since it was a holiday weekend finding the proper vehicles to haul all the people and pull a trailer was also a problem. We finally found 2 vehicles that could seat a large number of people comfortably. A team member, who had decided not to go due to extenuating circumstances, decided to join us giving us a third vehicle to pull the trailer. GOD IS FAITHFUL !!!!!!! I want to mention here that the team members did not gripe or whine while sitting around waiting to see what could be worked out but spent time in fellowship and I saw some of our team praying with other customers at the repair shop. We hit the road about 5 hours later making our first day on the road long with not much sleep for the team. As I gave the room keys out I ask all to report for breakfast in just a few hoursto which I had favorable results. The next day was uneventful and we arrived at our destination giving praise to God for a safe trip. Again I want to stop here and say thank you to those who drove during this trip, noting that we had no accidents and as it turned out, we needed the extra vehicles to take care of all our ministry needs. We stayed in an old hospital that had been converted to a place for volunteers to stay, with pretty good accommodations. Showers had to be scheduled and the men’s and women’s bathrooms had to be shared because no one had their own private bathroom. We did have our own kitchen and we ate like royalty thanks to Chef Kevin and his assistant Jim who spent long hours preparing our meals. We had a large room where we spent time each morning with a short devotional. At night we would have a longer devotional, sing songs and spend time sharing what had happened during the day and what we saw God doing while we were there. We saw 12 kids accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior during our visit along with 1 very special young man. One day as we were in the park I saw a young man standing out in the middle of a field all by himself a little ways from where the kids were playing games. I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to go over and share the gospel with him. I went and introduced myself and after visiting with Derrick, who was 18, I asked if he knew where he would spend eternity to which he said “no.” I told him that I knew for sure where I would spend eternity and asked him if he would like to know for sure? He said he did, so I told him about Jesus and how He died for him and about the forgiveness he could have through faith in Jesus. He prayed and accepted the free gift of eternal life as it began to rain on us. It reminded me of how God washes our sins away and makes us white as snow. Joel 2:32 “everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” Wednesday night we went to a small local church and listened to Lonnie Riley share about how God was making a difference through the ministry which God had given him to start in Lynch, Ky. His message boiled down to thisdo what God directs you to do, don’t worry about who, what, when, or whereGod will take care of the details if we will only take the first step. Thursday afternoon we had the opportunity to see a little of the history of Lynch and then we packed for home. Thursday evening we were blessed to be able to minister to a couple and their children. He is associated with Meridzo Ministries but they live by faith and depend on God for all their needs. Our team gave them a love offering along with any food and other items we had left over. Our trip home was uneventful, arriving back home safe and sound. One last God story! I had budgeted for some construction materials but we were blessed to have almost everything on the job when we got there. As a result of not having to purchase construction materials, the extra cost of the rental vehicles was taken care of in advance by God!
