Many weekend and hospitality establishments in and around town recently received rewards of excellence. This was from the world’s largest online travel planner, TripAdvisor. The certificate of excellence is given to outstanding hospitality businesses that have received praise and recognition in reviews by TripAdvisor travellers. Winners of the award range from oneroom bed and breakfasts to 6 000-room hotels, from bakeries to Michelin-star restaurants and hidden attractions to world-renowned parks and museums. To qualify, each establishment has to maintain an overall rating of four points or higher on a scale of five as feedback from the public using the TripAdvisor online system. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the past 12 months. The certificate of excellence programme is an extension of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. Local hotels that were awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence are Hotel Numbi, the Protea Hotel, Perry’s Bridge Hollow Boutique Hotel, Sanbonani Resort Hotel and Casa do Sol Hotel. Resorts awarded are Summerfields Rose Retreat, Hippo Hollow, Sabi River Sun Resort and Aan de Vliet with Highgrove House as a five-star guest house and Nabana Lodge, in the category for lodges. Photo: Summerfileds 378344ND Looking back at the history of Hazyview Marius Bakkes The project of Mpumalanga Heritage in conjunction with local historian Hans Bornman and Hazyview Herald to compile the history of the town and its surrounds is enjoying great interest among townsfolk and all interested in the past of the area. Bornman is currently in the process of gathering information by arranging, doing and transcribing interviews. He is also busy with the revision of the third edition of his wellknown publication, Pioneers of the Lowveld which will contain some of the new historical information gathered with this project. Note that a tour of Hazyview and its surrounding areas to visit places of historical significance originally planned for June 25 has now been postponed to July 9. The planning of an itinerary is currently underway. Locals as well as members of Mpumalanga Heritage are invited to join. More information will be made public soon. To stimulate the conversations on the history of Hazyview as well as to entice locals to come up with essential information to fill in the gaps left in our knowledge of the past, Mpumalanga Heritage is in the process of compiling a historical timeline published today. Feel free to contact history@ destinations.co.za with more written information or contact Marius Bakkes on 013-754-1600 during office hours. Do realise that this study needs to be as complete as possible. Prehistoric times as well as estimated dates of early settlements will also be taken in account. It includes the history of all groupings and people who are represented in the area as far as Skukuza in the Kruger National Park, Bushbuckridge and all below the escarpment to this side of Klipkoppie Dam. Mnr. Jan Swart en mnr. Cornelius du Preez. Me. Alta Prinsloo en me. Emily Bezuidenhout. Theo de Jager as gasspreker genooi. 376500NM Importan t ex Admission tractions: po language licy & policy: • Prefer ence will be given to Gra application de 1 if the child is going to turn 7 years in 2017. • Preference will be give : n to applican s t w ho n re sides in Haz ts me er yv u ie c w Vakansiedo o d of learn s rp, d Numbi Park e r i t e & n Requ h certificat both pare n • LOLT - Languages De Rust of learning • Birt ments of noculatio and teaching ar e Afrikaans ocu ) nd i & English. • ID d ination a linic card M c O c • Vac tificates ( la or ESK cer mbe of of o b o inal M or pr • Orig account f address l ld entia resid to of chi ort of o p h p • ID 7: Last re nce a 2 r s rfo m de • Gra demic pe aca Due date: n be collected from Application forms ca submitted no the office and must be 2016 at 13:00. later than 12 August 377434R 2 Hazyview Herald 150 Gompou Crescent, Hazyview, 1242, Mpumalanga | Telephone: 013-737-7204 378425NM COMMUNITY 4 Hazyview Herald Friday June 17, 2016 Lodge boasts a second year of excellence Thelma Nel Nabana Lodge on the R40 has recently been awarded the certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor for the second year in a row. Nabana Lodge is a family-owned business and guests are invited to share in a loving and caring atmosphere. Set amid banana plantations, it is a tranquil haven with magnificent views over the eastern escarpment. Nabana Lodge has become a household name not only to locals, but nationally. It is also one of the oldest business names listed in Hazyview. The name arose when four young farmers explored the area in the 1950s and decided to settle here and farm bananas, calling the farm Nabana. What started as a farm, slowly expanded into a hospitality trade. During the eighties, a tea garden under umbrellas appeared among the banana plants to be followed by a pub under thatch. Later a road-side stall developed into a thatched-roof restaurant with landscaping of a large subtropical garden. The third owner of Nabana added guest accommodation in the nineties and the fourth owner added a pool and deck. “This is how it looks today,” says Magda, who is a long-time resident of the Lowveld and has extensive local knowledge that View from the restaurant deck.
