30 1983 2013 years ® RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES MARSHFIELD News That Love Built The Ronald McDonald House Charities mission is to “create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.” Summer 2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Carol Adler Vice-President Pamela Acker Secretary Carol Willfahrt Treasurer Ron Fish Directors Patti Shafto-Carlson Heidi Giese Joe Dolezal Liz Kracht Lisa Roy “Krauty” Krautkramer Adrienne Cruz, MD Heidi Fish Financial Consultant Jim Bartelt House Staff House Director Sandra Zygarlicke Evening Managers Georgi Sartain Cindy Marks Kim Krueger Weekend Managers Marilyn McCann Mabel Luepke Ginger Orth Sue Nelson Gloria Nixdorf Housekeeping Judy Schiller Recycled Cans and Tabs Last year the House received a total of $10,179.87 from recycling! Over the past 11 years, the House has received a grand total of $89,656.03 from recycling cans and tabs. This is our second largest annual fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House in Marshfield. Because we are a nonprofit organization, we only ask families for $5.00 a night to stay at our House. Most families stay rent free. The money from the aluminum tab recycling program goes to pay for general operating expenses of the House. We are very grateful for the participation of so many individuals, churches, schools, tavern leagues, and clubs in the “PULL FOR THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE!” program. If you would like to join us in this effort, find more info on our website at www.rmhc-marshfield.org. Vivian’s Story... The Power of Faith, Hope and Love By Jenny Erickson Many Midwesterners will remember the winter of 2013-14 as one of the most brutal we’ve experienced. I’d definitely agree with that, but not for the same reasons others might. Yes, I too witnessed the unusually large amounts of snow and endless days of below-zero temps, but most of my weather observations were done while looking out of the window of a hospital room. My 13-year-old daughter Vivian was in the hospital (St. Joseph’s in Marshfield, WI and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH) from October 29, 2013 until April 28, 2014. Vivi was in a medically induced coma during much of that time because she went into status epilepticus, meaning her seizure condition, which began at age 8, became suddenly worse and uncontrollable. When Sandy from the Ronald McDonald House in Marshfield asked me to write about Vivian’s story, I happily agreed. But what I’m finding is that it’s impossible to give anyone a sense of Vivian’s medical journey since last Vivian as she was being transported on a cold winter’s day October in a modest article such as this one. by the Cleveland Clinic transport team. I’d simply take over the whole newsletter (and probably the next one, too). Instead, I invite you to visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/vivianerickson to read the entries I created on her CaringBridge site to get a better sense of the magnitude of what she went through. So instead of talking about comas, intubation, EEGs, infections, medications and surgeries, I’d rather let you know what I believe made all of the difference in Vivian’s healing: faith, hope and love. Vivian and Jenny celebrating 1 month of being seizure free. That faith, hope and love actually started with Vivi. With her, it was never “if we get my seizures fixed…” it was “WHEN we get my seizures fixed.” There was never a doubt in her mind that the day would come when we’d figure out what was causing her seizures and then do what we needed to do to end them. And quite honestly, for a long time, she was the only one with that unshakable resolve. During Vivian’s hospitalization, I had a choice. I could either focus on the negative or do everything in my power to embody the patience, persistence and perseverance it would take to be her number one advocate. So that is what I did. Well, most days. I won’t claim to be perfect, but I can tell you that when my faith, hope and love were at their strongest, I weathered the difficult times much better and had the strength to see past them to the kind of future Vivi knew she could have. The doctors told us several times there was a good chance Vivi wouldn’t survive. Whether it be due to her seizures, her longterm placement in the coma, the many infections that riddled her body along the way, or the surgeries she needed to have, we were given some statistics that to this day make me cry. Then in the darkest days, while holding Vivian’s hand as she lay in her comatose state, I heard her voice in my head: “Mom, you’re not giving up on me, are you?” No. Never. Vivian growing stronger every day in therapy. I believe that it was faith, hope and love that helped me make better decisions for Vivi. I also believe the more the doctors knew where I stood, the stronger their hope became as well. In addition, being surrounded by the community of people I met at the Ronald McDonald Houses in Marshfield and Cleveland was just like being surrounded by faith, hope and love. The kind and considerate staff made such a difference in alleviating some of my stress (especially during the holidays) by providing a comfortable place to stay as well as meals so I could focus on being with my daughter. And the parents and children who I met during our journey – some of whom I still keep in touch with – inspired me every day with their own stories and words of encouragement. It’s our job – our privilege – as parents to be led by love and not fear. And that is such a hard thing to do. Of course, it’s not hard to love our children – we do that unconditionally. But, when something terrifying gets in our way that threatens their survival, that fear feels like an elephant sitting on your chest. The only thing that lifts the weight? Faith, hope and love. Sometimes it may feel like it’s the only thing you’ve got, but after you get past the darkest times, you’ll realize it wasn’t the only thing – it was EVERYTHING. Volunteer Appreciation Event A Volunteer Appreciation Event was held Thursday evening, April 10, at the UWMarshfield to honor the House volunteers of the Ronald McDonald House-Marshfield for their many years of service. Cindy Schecklman and Denise Eiberg were each honored for 10 years of service, Mabel Luepke for 20 years, and Karen Reyes for 30 years. Kathy Schrader was chosen to be honored as our 2014 “Senior Volunteer of the Year.” Kathy has been helping out as a House Volunteer on Mondays since 2001. Kathy said that she likes to keep busy, and one of her favorite past times is volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. Robert and Geraldine Foltz were also honored as “Senior Meal of the Month” volunteers. They retired in March after coming to the House once a month since the summer of 2002 to make a homemade supper meal for our House families. Most months they would stay to serve the meal, visit with the families, and clean up after. What dedication and service! We all know the importance of the Volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House Robert & Geraldine Foltz and Kathy Schr ader in Marshfield. The Board and staff recognize that they are the oxygen needed to accomplish the many tasks and projects, both inside and outside of the House. They generously give over 1,000 hours of their time annually. Our small but faithful core of House volunteers are a part of a great network of over 140,000 volunteers at 336 Ronald McDonald Houses in 35 countries and regions around the world. These volunteers are the backbone of the Ronald McDonald House program. They cook and clean; garden and grill; do laundry and lend a listening ear. Most importantly though, RMH volunteers give our families an extra dose of compassion and care that truly helps in the healing process. If you are interested in becoming a regular House Volunteer, please call the Office at 715.387.5899 so we can set up a time to discuss how you may get involved locally. For example, we are in need of a volunteer(s) to mow and trim the RMH lawn weekly. We provide the equipment. You provide the time and energy. Or you might like to schedule a time to come and grill out for the families. A great weekend idea to get involved and give back! You might like to clean, bake, make ice-cream sundaes, or do bedroom laundry for the families after they check out. Maybe you would like to gather a group of friends or co-workers and help out at our Cranberry Century Bike Tour in September or sign up to do the fall Yard-House Cleaning Fling. Both of these ideas are annual one-day volunteer events. Once again, THANK YOU, Ronald McDonald House Volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without you! Upcoming Events 23rd Annual Musky Memorial Classic The 23rd Annual Kevin Worrall Memorial Musky Classic will be held on Saturday, Sept 6, 2014 in memory of Kevin Worrall, who loved to fish. This tournament was a HUGE success last year in part to our sponsors, fishermen and volunteers. We had an outstanding turn out with a total of 119 boats. We ended up donating a total of $7304.00 to the Ronald McDonald House in Marshfield.
