30 1983 2013 years ® RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES MARSHFIELD News That Love Built The Ronald McDonald House Charities mission is to “create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.” Fall 2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Carol Adler Vice-President Pamela Acker Secretary Carol Willfahrt Treasurer Ron Fish Directors Patti Shafto-Carlson Heidi Giese Joe Dolezal Liz Kracht Lisa Roy “Krauty” Krautkramer Adrienne Cruz, MD Financial Consultant Jim Bartelt House Staff House Director Sandra Zygarlicke Evening Managers Pat Passo Georgi Sartain Cindy Marks Kim Krueger Weekend Managers Marilyn McCann Mabel Luepke Ginger Orth Sue Nelson Gloria Nixdorf Housekeeping Judy Schiller Our “Grand Finale” On July 2, 2013, our handsome little David was born as the 6th child in our family. His nickname is “Grand Finale.” Shortly after he was born the doctor’s stethoscope picked up the sounds of a heart murmur (sounds like swooshing over the heartbeat). We were told this was not a reason for concern as 1 in 5 people are born with holes in their heart, and the vast majority David post-operation of holes close on their own as the heart grows. To be safe, we were directed to the pediatric cardiologists at Marshfield Clinic. One week after David was born, an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) revealed that David had two holes in his heart, and one of them was too large to close on its own. It would require surgery. Despite the doctor’s assurance that there was no imminent emergency, the news of the hole and heart surgery hit us like a freight train. We began a game of waiting for David to put on weight so that he could better endure surgery. The plot thickened when David was 4 weeks old, and he contracted pneumonia. We took him to the emergency room in our home town of Stevens Point. Shortly after being admitted, David and mom were taken Summer and by ambulance to Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Marshfield. He was hospitalized for 8 days. During that time the Gold family (remember 5 other kids!) went into crisis mode. To the relief of many burdens, in stepped the Ronald McDonald House of Marshfield . The House gave Marshfieldtied mom and commuting dad a safe, warm resting place for those 8 days. What a joy to have a nearby place where sanity could be regained and energy could be refueled. David progressed for 3 more healthy months until his openheart surgery was performed on November 4th. The Ronald McDonald House received us eagerly for 4 more days and again aided our burdens of food, housing, and safety. David 1 week after operation When the surgical team completed the procedure, we were told that they repaired 3 holes and tightened a leaky valve in David’s heart. As I write this article one week after the surgery David is smiling again, and we are grateful for the gifted hands of surgeons, the resources of church and family, and also sincerely for the gracious hospitality of the House. Thomas Gold Musky Tournament The 22nd Annual Kevin Worrall Memorial Musky Classic was held on Sept 7, 2013, in memory of Kevin Worrall, who loved to fish. This tournament was a HUGE success!! This is in great part to our sponsors, fishermen and volunteers. We had an outstanding turn out with a total of 119 boats. There were a total of 9 muskies caught and then successfully released. Here are the results: 1st Place $2500.00 Brian Swenson 44 1/4” Mancave Bait award for free entry into next year’s tournament & JDR Specialty Tackle box full of lures 2nd Place $1500.00 Greg Barth 38 ½” received a JDR Specialty box of lures 3rd Place $1250.00 Nate Jorgensen 38 ½: received a JDR Specialty box of lures 4th Place $1000.00 Tim Guth 37 ¾” 5th Place $750.00 6th Place $500.00 Greg Junak 35 ½” 7th Place $500.00 Steve Vitt 35” 8th Place $500.00 Andy Veith 34 ½” 9th Place $500.00 10th Place $500.00 Brian Verkylen & Mark Bombinski (drew for it) We ended up donating a total of $7304.00 to the Ronald McDonald House in Marshfield. We hope that next year you would be willing to help us make this tournament an even better success & raise even more money to support the families in need while their children are going through such difficult times in their lives at the Ronald McDonald House. Thank you again for your generous donations! We look forward to next year’s tournament on September 6, 2014. Sherri & Gary Gerrits of Gerrits Lakeview Pelican Lake, WI -- Home of the Musky Stan Krueger 37” Dave Martin 34 1/4” Fall Happenings Cranberry Century Bike Tour On Sunday, September 15, 134 bikers participated in our annual Cranberry Century Bike Tour. We had 2 bikers from Pennsylvania, 4 from Minnesota, and 128 bikers from 45 cities in Wisconsin, from Ashland to Waukesha. The 100-mile tour was ridden by 34 bikers, the 64-mile by 15 bikers, the 40-mile by 40 bikers, and the 20-mile by 45 bikers. Our goal this year was to surpass our record number of bikers from 2012, which was 213, but the very inclement weather this year dampened those plans considerably. Thanks to our generous sponsors and bikers, we still were able to raise $6,577 to support the Ronald McDonald House mission. We are a non-profit charity that requests $5.00 a night donation from our families using the facility, but we never turn anyone away who qualifies to stay. This is just one way that we raise funds to meet our annual budget and keep the “doors of compassion” open 24/7/365! Thanks to the following sponsors: A Sweet Affaire “The House that LOVE built” opened its doors on December 8, 1983. This year the Ronald McDonald House of Marshfield is celebrating its 30-year anniversary. In recognition of this important milestone, the RMH brought back one of Marshfield’s favorite fundraising events, “A Sweet Affaire.” This event took place on the evening of Thursday, October 24 at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center. A wonderful evening was planned to include musical entertainment, raffle, dinner and special guests. The celebration was topped off with a vocal auction of amazingly delicious desserts and a RMH signature piece from Wickersham Jewelry. The highest bidder of the evening won the “Biggest Sweet Tooth Package” –a pizza a week for a year from Scotty’s Pizza in Marshfield. Attendees also had the opportunity to win such prizes as four Southwest Airlines tickets, McDonald’s gift cards, Badger basketball tickets, a homemade quilt, Clyde Wynia metal sculpture, and much more! Todd Anderson, auctioneer, was on hand to auction off 30 elegant desserts after Ron Fish, owner/operator of local McDonald’s restaurants, shared the 30-year history of the House. “This event is so much fun and helps out such a great cause,” Patti Shafto-Carlson, Event Co-Chair with Heidi Giese, said. “A Sweet Affaire” will satisfy a craving and help make a difference.” And it did just that. Thanks to the generous financial support of the 235 attendees and others who were unable to come that evening, this signature fundraiser held once every 5 years, provided $26,100 in financial support for our mission of providing temporary lodging for families of ill children. A Secure Home Last year the Ronald McDonald House of Marshfield provided housing for 338 families with 532 House visits ranging from one day to four months in length. Over 9,000 families have stayed in this House since opening in December, 1983. Our families rely on a safe, comfortable haven during a stressful time. We provide a secure facility, working utilities, accessible kitchen space, maintained common areas, and much more. Donors trust in this organization to provide families what they need seven days a week, 365 days of the year. This organization could not operate without the strong support of individuals, businesses, civic groups, churches, and schools each year providing support for our daily operations. Often overlooked is the power of planned gifts that secure the future of the House for those families who will need our unique services. Planned gifts can come in many forms, but the simplest and easiest way is to designate the Ronald McDonald House as a beneficiary in your will, life insurance policy, or revocable living trust. As a general rule it is best to consult your financial advisor if you are considering a planned gift, but below is general language that you can use in a will. “I give (___ percent of my estate) or (the residue of my estate) or ($_____specific dollar amount) to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Marshfield, Inc (tax ID #93-0833012), located at 803 W North Street, Marshfield, WI 54449 for its general use and purposes.” We are grateful for your support. Please consider the Ronald McDonald House in your personal estate planning to ensure the long-term sustainability of the House.
