What an Election Season!
While many of us may view this year’s political campaign as
rather discouraging, we need to remember that it is our right and
responsibility to vote. We may have doubts about the
qualifications of the candidates in each race, but we need to
determine for ourselves which individuals we believe would do the
best job to improve our future as a nation and as a local
community. Search your own heart according to your own values
and vote accordingly.
If there is one thing we have learned from the campaigns
this year, it is that we should treat each other with respect and
work together to make this country even greater than it is.
People do not have to agree on everything - and they never will.
As unsettling as the presidential election may seem to
some people, remember we are also voting for other
important contested races including US Senate, State
Senate, State Assembly, and local offices.
Most Americans agree that democracy is the best
governmental system in the world. Vote on November 8,
accept the outcome, and move on to do what you can to
improve your community. Your vote is important!
Call us if you need help getting to the polls.

During the month of November we will be observing American Diabetes Month. Did you
know that 1 in 11 Americans has diabetes, and every 23 seconds someone gets diagnosed
with it? We will be having two educa#onal sessions this month to learn more about it.
© On November 9, we welcome Leigh Rueckheim, RN
Diabetes Educator, to teach us about basic diabetes
management.
© On November 15, Veva Brockway, Cer#fied Dietary
Manager, and Kris#n Wolfe, Registered Die##an, will
take a look at the nutri#on side of diabetes and will be
sharing ways to alter recipes during the upcoming
holiday season, including trying a few recipe samples.
We welcome new dining site a$endees. If you know
someone who could benefit from learning about
diabetes, please bring them along!
If you are interested in having a nice Thanksgiving meal with good company, please join us
on November 23. Following the meal we will be having BINGO and giving away a few more
nice items from the Gundersen St Joseph’s gi; shop.

The Importance of Fluids
As we age, the risk for dehydra#on increases. As one gets older, their thirst tends to
decrease. Consuming adequate amounts of fluid is essen#al for our body as fluid intake
prevents cons#pa#on, aids in diges#on of food, promotes kidney func#on, and can prevent
fa#gue.
Fluid intake needs vary from person to person depending on size, gender, medical
condi#ons, and medica#ons that one is taking. The rule of thumb of 8 glasses of water a day
is adequate for most adults. You can also calculate fluid needs by taking your weight in
kilograms (weight in pounds/2.2=weight in kilograms) mul#plied by 25-30 which will give you
the amount of fluids recommended in milliliters (30 ml=1 oz; 8 oz=1 cup). Another
recommenda#on is to consume 1 ml of fluid per 1 calorie that is consumed per day.
There are several signs and symptoms associated with dehydra#on. Symptoms of mild
dehydra#on can include weakness, dry skin, dizziness, headaches, cramping, inability to
urinate or deep yellow urine, cracked or dry lips, dry mouth, and headaches. Serious signs of
dehydra#on might include dry or sunken eyes, low blood pressure, severe cramping and
muscle aches, rapid breathing, and wrinkling or poor elas#city of the skin. If you are
experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consult your doctor.
The following #ps are ways to increase fluid intake and
prevent dehydra#on.
· Fill a bo$le or glass full of water and take it with you
wherever you go.
· Keep a glass of water with you at your chairside and
bedside.
· Add fresh fruit or a splash of fruit juice to give your water
extra flavor.
· In between each bite of a meal, take a sip of water, milk,
or juice.
· Drink a full glass of water when taking medica#ons.
· Eat soups with meals or as a snack.
· Have a popsicle as a snack.
· If exercising, drink a glass of water before and a;er you
exercise.
· Drink more fluids if you are vomi#ng or have diarrhea.
· If you are avoiding fluid intake due to a urinary concern,
please consult your doctor for proper treatment.
