Your University’s legacy is built on a commitment
to excellence and a dedication to community. You’ll

Walter Harrison
President
The University of Hartford is a remarkable institution,
and students are the driving force in our success.
I am proud to be a graduate of this fine University
and honored to serve as president of the Alumni
Association.
The mission of the Alumni Association is to build
relationships between current and future alumni, and
to advocate for, and provide support to, the University.
I encourage you not to wait until you graduate to get
involved with the Alumni Association. Getting involved
will help you build relationships and contribute to the
value of your degree. You’ll soon see alumni are very
present on campus as classroom speakers, lecturers,
mentors, and fans. I encourage you to take every
opportunity during the next four years to meet them,
learn from them, and share with them your own UHart
experience.
WELCOME

MAKE YOURSELF
AT HOME
10
As you live here, you will work harder and smarter
than ever before, and you will have more fun than ever
before. You will find there are more concerts, parties,
and cultural events than you have time to attend. You
will have athletic games to watch or participate in,
a new local community to explore, nearby exercise
facilities to workout in, and even natural resources
such as hiking and biking trails to enjoy. You will
meet and live with interesting people with different
backgrounds and experiences to share. By taking time
to develop these new friendships, you will learn more
about yourself and what you want out of life.
UHart staff are ready and waiting to help you navigate
life, both inside and outside the classroom. My office
can serve as your safe haven—a place to go when
you don’t know where else to turn. We’re here to
answer your questions or hear your concerns about
life on campus. We all look forward to assisting you
throughout the amazing journey upon which you are
about to embark.
Welcome to the University of Hartford.

Vice President for Student Affairs
Living on campus allows you to experience college life
and explore your new independence. UHart Resident
Assistants (RAs) are here to guide you on your journey.
They are mentors, leaders, helpers, programmers,
counselors, and friends.
MAKE YOURSELF
COMFORTABLE
While a resident at UHart, take the opportunity to serve on a Hall Council
or the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Hall Council members work to
empower residents to stay connected and invested in the development of
their community by planning activities and discussing solutions to common
issues. RHA is a student organization dedicated to improving the quality of
the residential experience at UHart. RHA advocates for residential students
to help create a dynamic campus experience that is both successful and
rewarding. Talk to your RA about this opportunity.

CHAPTER THREE
SHOW YOUR
HAWK SPIRIT
THE RED AND THE WHITE
Alma Mater of the University of Hartford
Verse 1
Oh, University of Hartford,
A legacy that will not end,
Your banners high and colors brilliant
Give strength as we this world amend.
Chorus
Red to fire our soul’s passion,
As we proudly sing your praise.
White to guide our ev’ry action,
Now, tomorrow, all our days.
Verse 2
University of Hartford,
Where first our thoughts were all set free,
With peer, true friend, and mentor toiled,
For honor, truth, and honesty.
Repeat chorus.
21
FLY HIGH
Fight Song of the Hartford Hawks
Fly high, Hawks, fly high,
And know that victory is nigh,
Let’s try, Hawks, let’s try,
For we know it’s do or die.
By courage be led.
Have pride in the dear old white and red.
Fly high, Hawks, fly high,
And soar to glory in the sky.
22
HARRY, MANNY,
OR HOWIE?
According to a popular legend, the
basketball team of the University’s
predecessor, Hillyer College, was
called the “Flying Hawks” because
the gymnasium was located on
the top floor of the Hillyer College
building, among the rafters.
However, information provided by
the Hillyer College newspaper, The
Hillyer Callboard, suggests the Hawk mascot’s original name,
Harry, may have been coined by
Hillyer College Bursar C. Richard
Ericson in 1947.
During the 1970s, the Hawk was
revived as UHart mascot and
was renamed “Manny.” The name
stuck and “Howie” was known as
“Manny” as late as 1976.
At some point, “Manny” went
back to “Harry” before finally
evolving into “Howie” after Howie
Kassman, who wore the Hawk
costume from 1985 to 1990.

Check out some interesting facts you might not
know about your future alma mater.
HOME SWEET HOME
A A The first building on the Bloomfield Avenue campus
was built in 1959 and was known as “the general
classroom building”—you know it as Hillyer Hall.
A A Hawk Hall was dedicated during Fall Weekend 2007
(aka Hawktober Weekend) by President Walter Harrison
and University of Hartford Regent and President of the
Alumni Association Paul Sittard ’85. Also unveiled was
the large brass H in the center of Alumni Plaza, a gift
from President Harrison and his wife. It is considered
bad luck to step on the brass H in Alumni Plaza.
A A A time capsule, filled with items intended to give a
31
sense of what 2007 was like on campus, was buried
near the brass H and will be opened in 2057 on the
University’s 100th anniversary.
A A A 15-foot long shovel was used at the groundbreaking
of Auerbach Hall in 1966.
A A More than half of the plants you see at the University
are grown on campus in a greenhouse located on the
roof of Dana Hall.
A A The Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center is
located in a building that was once a car dealership
originally designed by noted industrial architect Albert
Kahn. The building was gutted and renovated.
A A In 2012, a scond bridge was built over the Hog River.
The bridge replaced a dam that had once blocked fish
migration. By replacing the dam, it is hoped the river
will return to Class A status.
IN THE HISTORY BOOKS
A A In 1959, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in the city
of Hartford as a guest of the University of Hartford.
Malcolm X spoke at the University in 1963.
A A In 1972, a pie-throwing contest between former UHart
President Archibald Woodruff and Student Senate
President Eric Litsky ’73 attracted national attention.
The competition was designed to ease tensions in a
time of great civil unrest, both on and off campus. The
“fight” was featured in Life magazine and achieved its
goal of diffusing tensions on campus.
A A Registered by students as Leo D. Canine, a basset
hound was nearly enrolled in the Class of 1982 at the
University! Leo’s application bounced because
someone noticed he had no ZIP Code.
A A Theta Chi, the first fraternity, came to campus in 1969.
Alpha Xi Delta, the first sorority, arrived in 1985. Today
the University has 13 chapters of fraternities and
sororities making up its Greek Life.
A A Six oak trees stand in a row along a sidewalk on the
Campus Green, and serve as memorials to the six
University of Hartford alumni who lost their lives on
9/11 at the World Trade Center.
A A Mortensen Library’s collection includes the Nuremberg
Chronicle, a 15th-century work that presents a history
of the world from creation to its publication in 1493.
A A Two red sheds, referred to as “dairy barns,” once stood
on campus. They got their name for a good reason. The
University is built on a former dairy farm!

This traditions book has been an exciting project to create and give to the next
generation of Hawks. We appreciate the eagerness to participate we witnessed
from nearly every aspect of our community—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and
administrators. In particular the Alumni Relations staff and the Alumni Association
wish to acknowledge the Student Alumni Association (SAA) for their vision through
this process and the Parents’ Association for their support. To everyone involved in
this effort, we say thank you! We are confident this first edition is just the beginning of
another great Hawks tradition.

While sincere effort was made to share the
highlights of the University of Hartford’s
traditions, there may be some items we
overlooked.
Think we missed something important?
