Principal’s Role for developing IT in CCC Heep Woh College Background of our students • Most students come from less well-off socio-economic background • 100% of our F.1 intakes belong to Band 1 • The family support is insufficient but students are generally equipped with high ability in learning. Tapping resources Funding disbursed by school Teachers encouraged to apply for external funding e.g. QEF (99-03) Year Title of project Funding 99-00 ᇷಛઝݾٽᚭᏣᢌඒߛૠቤ $217,500 00-01 ᇷಛઝݾ۴ॣխᖂسᑇᖂګ९ $300,000 00-01 ԲԼԫધ֏ᖂኔ᧭ $276,500 00-01 ஃسյ೯ߢඒᖂኔ᧭ $1,299,132 01-02 Տڍ᧯ᓰ $308,000 01-02 ᑇᒘᖯ $527,000 01-03 ૠፖઝݾሽᆰ᎖ܗᖂխ֨֗ᜤீૠ೯ $635,200 Total $3,563,332 Resource allocation in school 2001-2002 All teachers participated in school-based IT training. As a result, 75% of teachers obtained IIT and 25% of teachers obtained UIT. Teachers paired up to share a laptop which was provided by school. Teachers can access network and use projectors (Part of School funding) in all classrooms and special rooms. Data-logging system in laboratory (QEF) 2002-2003 Develop intranet for learning and teaching Purchasing laptops for all teachers through school funding Develop tailor-made program for administration e.g homework checking system. Parents can check homework on school website 2003-2004 Focus on computerization in library Around 70% of departments usually applied IT in lesson Implemented WebSAMS Student portfolio program Joined TSA pilot scheme (One of ten pilot schools) 2004-2005 Reconstruct school website and intranet Updating information restructured into well-organized management Develop tailor-made program for administration e.g Room reservation program; Teachers can reserve a room from the school web site School Improvement Project Two new MMLC rooms, music room, student activity room, library, staff room, Function Hall, classroom rooms and etc. New Desktop computers and projectors were installed in all classrooms and special rooms. 2005-2006 Participated in the University of Hong Kong e-leadership program and developed Student-Teacher (S-T) forum. Visited different elementary and secondary schools in Singapore to learn more about the most advanced Information Technology in Education. Principal and assigned teachers also shared their experiences in the "Hong Kong International IT in Education Conference 2006" from 7 to 8 February 2006. 2006-2007 S-T Forum implement in all KLA area Teacher-Teacher (T-T) Forum established to discuss hot issues. e.g. curriculum integration ˇˈ˃ ˇ˃˃ ˆˈ˃ ˆ˃˃ ˅ˈ˃ ˡ̂ˁʳ̂˹ ˶̂̀̃̈̇˸̅ ˅˃˃ ˄ˈ˃ ˄˃˃ ˈ˃ ˃ ˕˸˹̂̅˸ ˅˃˃˄ˀ ˅˃˃˄ ˅˃˃ˆ ˅˃˃ˆˀ ˣ̅˸̆ ˸́̇ ˅˃˃ˈ Teachers personally purchased upgraded laptops. Only 6 Public desktop computers and some laptop computers are provided to teachers Focus on students who cannot afford to buy computers Three-year Plan for IT development (Matching fund by EMB, school, QEF) Replace old computers & install wireless LAN Participate in QEF project (3-I project) Students and teachers will work on project learning with other students from other countries. At the end of academic year, they will visit the college which they work with. Vertical learning thread - IT Learning Web Key Learning Area eForum (Vertical learning thread) F7 Information Technology F1 Science F2 Mathematics F3 Key Learning Area eForum (Vertical learning thread) Catering for learning differences (1) Key learning area eForums including Chinese Language English Language Mathematics Science Technology Personal, Social and Humanities Arts Physical (2) All eForums will be implemented across all forms (3) Senior form students can discuss through the forums and help the junior form students when they have any problems in each subject matters. Difficulties encountered To motivate students to access our knowledge eForum frequently To encourage higher form students to act as teachers to help lower form students To convince our teachers to build up similar eForum in different key learning areas Horizontal learning thread - IT Learning Web •Establish knowledge community Key Learning Area Forum (Vertical learning thread) F7 Web-classroom (Horizontal learning thread) F3 Web-classroom (Horizontal learning thread) F2 Web-classroom (Horizontal learning thread) F1 Web-classroom (Horizontal learning thread) Proposed Horizontal Learning Thread (1) Setup virtual classrooms for each subject across each form instead of individual teacher (2) Teachers contribute and share their teaching materials in one virtual classroom established on a form level basis. For example, in Form 1 Mathematics, we may build up a virtual classroom for each form. 1A 1B 1C 1D 1E virtual-classroom Chinese English Mathematics : What will be the benefit for students? (1)Self-learning & assessment - Students can work on quizzes and exercises at their own pace. (2)Continuous life-long learning (3)Better management in a subject – Learning and teaching material can be retained and accumulated for next year. (4)Teachers can share teaching resources with colleagues Expected difficulties (1) Heavier workload among teachers (2) Ways to motivate colleagues to encourage more students to participate Solution (1) Explain the benefits to teachers in detail (2) Hold competitions to encourage students’ participation Teacher’s experience to motivate students to use e-forum 1. Discussion topics should be relevant to student’s learning schedule, so that they can benefit from visiting e-forum. 2. Allocate marks to e-forum participation as part of the assessment of their learning. 3. Teacher need to motivate them to share their learning with others. 4. Interesting topics should be posted and good student’s feedback mentioned in lessons 5. Active participants are rewarded 6. Invite higher form students to help teacher to answer questions in the forum. 7. Encourage students to discuss the answers to exercises and quizzes 8. Teacher involvement is important 9. Useful information is circulated in the forum 10. Feedback should be given promptly to student’s queries Further developments Forums development e.g. P-T (Parent –Teacher), A-T (Alumni-Teacher), etc Knowledge community (e-classroom) Campus TV (sharing experiences among students, teachers and parents) Conclusion Principal’s Role in IT development is as a Facilitator School Level Suggest direction Aware of the trends in IT development Teacher Level Suggest appropriate IT equipment and techniques to motivate interactive learning Encourage teachers to apply for external resources Student Level To widen their horizon though IT Thank you Catering for learning differences and establish knowledge community in our School One of the strategies used in our school to cater for individual learning differences is using information technology as a learning tool. We have built up a kind of electronic learning platform on our school intranet-eForum. There are two different approaches. One we called vertical learning thread and the other we called horizontal learning thread. Through accumulation of learning experience from student, freshman can learn better and faster while they access the knowledge community; in fact, this is a kind of knowledge management for our school. Vertical Learning thread: catering for learning differences For the vertical learning thread, we built up three subject-based knowledge eForums in the first stage. They are Mathematics, Science and Information Technology. Students can work and interact with each other on the eForum. They can learn more through reading the notes of other students and build upon their ideas. Moreover, the low achievers can post some questions on the eForum and the higher form students or some high achievers can act as teachers or experts to answer their questions. In the second stage, we have built up the eight “Key Learning Area” (KLA) forums. For example, teacher will post up a current hot issue for the students to sound out their opinion. and students can communicate interactively. Both teachers Now let us watch a video clip about the sharing of our students about the eForum. Difficulties encountered: The difficulties we have encountered are how to motivate more students to visit our eForum frequently and also how we can encourage higher form students to act as teacher and to work collaboratively. So at the beginning, teachers may need to answer the questions which were posted up on the eForum by the students before we have some student helpers. Right now, we have established KLA eForums for students to access. Horizontal learning thread: Establishing knowledge management system For horizontal learning thread, the approach we shall use is called cross class subject setting. I said “we shall” because we have not implemented yet. We are going to implement very soon since we have just have the training workshops for our new teachers. It is a strategy that teachers contribute and share their teaching materials in a same virtual classroom which established in form based. For example, we may build up a virtual classroom for a subject in each form. All teachers in that form can upload and contribute their teaching materials in the virtual classroom so as to accumulate the relevant learning resources for students and other teachers.
