What they’re not expecting are the hordes of guests gathered in their dark apartment ready to throw them a surprise baby shower. As the shock subsides and makes way for baby centric conversations and invasive personal questions, it’s unclear if the happy couple are hiding more than their social insecurities. As May starts to drink more than a woman in her condition should, matters come to a head as the much anticipated ‘baby cake’ is unveiled. SYNOPSIS Whether creating stage productions, museum installations, live music shows, large scale events, or films, 59 productions’ team generates creative and technical ideas to help realise ambitious artistic projects. 59’s creative team covers a range of disciplines, including animation, filmmaking, writing, set, sound and lighting design. These diverse skills are combined with technical expertise and bespoke design to create exciting and innovative work for audiences of all kinds. Joseph Pierce is an award winning animator and filmmaker. On graduating from the UK’s National Film and Television School in 2008, he was named one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow. His shorts Stand Up (6’, 2008), A Family Portrait (4’, 2009) and The Pub (7’, 2012) have screened worldwide, winning prizes at Bristol Encounters, LA Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand, Melbourne Intl Film Festival and twice long-listed for the Academy Awards. His work in animation includes clients at the BBC, The Barbican Centre, Film4 and Atlantic Records. He has collaborated on various high profile live events including Dr Atomic at the Met Opera New York, Danny Boyle’s Olympic Opening Ceremony and The Perfect American, a new Philip Glass Opera. DIRECTOR PRODUCER Katie Jackson is a first time producer. After working for several film festivals, Katie produced and led workshops and live event screenings commissioned by festivals such as Sheffield Doc Fest and Branchage. In 2012 she worked with 59 productions in a promotional role on their short films, working closely again with film festival contacts. In 2013 she began working full time as assistant to producer Stephen Woolley within his production company Number 9 Films. Feature film credits in this role include Hyena (112’, 2014), Carol (118’, 2015), Youth (124’, 2015) and Their Finest Hour and a Half (2016). On this latest project she moved across to assist director Lone Scherfig. Early one morning while she’s sitting at the kitchen table, she finds an unwelcome guest underneath her sofa. The creature turns out to be none other than the Night itself. Elsa tells it of her life and of the death of her best friend – an elephant named Olaf. The Night accompanies her on a moving journey that tells the story of an extraordinary friendship. Finally the Night carries her - sleeping - through the town in its arms. SYNOPSIS Hob AB started in1989 as Omega Film and is fully owned by Peter Krupenin. More than 35 features have been produced. Hob has its seat on Fårö, with an office in Stockholm. The trademark has been to give first time directors a home. Mentorship is also given to young directors, scriptwriters and producers. Continuity for everybody involved is very important. Active as a director, illustrator and writer, Jöns Mellgren has an MA in animation from the Royal College of Art in London, where he graduated in 2009. He has directed a number of short films and commercials. His latest short - a stop motion film entitled Pappersvärld (A Paper World, 9’) - premiered at the Göteborg International Film Festival in 2014. He has written and illustrated five picture books for children and is currently working on a sixth. DIRECTOR PRODUCER Nima Yousefi grew up with his parents working with film, television and theatre in Iran and Sweden. While working as a child actor on a film, one of his earliest memories, he fell in love with the craft and art of movie productions. Nima studied economy and philosophy at Stockholm University School of Business and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. During recent years Nima has gained broad experience working with both live action and animation films with some of Sweden’s well known production companies like Svensk Filmindustri, Sonet film, FLX etc. Since 2010 Nima has been working as a junior producer at the production company Hob AB. Nima is currently producing an animated TV-series for children and developing a slate of films in different stages of development and pre-production. Nima is attending Eave Puentes in 2015 and 2016. Lovecraft, The Sounds from the Deep is a story about an excursion group searching for oil in the Arctic Ocean. Instead of oil they find something different. The Sounds from the Deep is a voyage into the unknown. SYNOPSIS COMPANY Twisted Films is a production company specialized in animation, film and motion graphics. It was established in Finland in 2006, driven by passionate people with backgrounds in motion pictures, advertising and music. Antti Laakso (1982) is a Finnish animation film director. He graduated from Turku Arts Academy’s animation department in 2008. He has written, directed and animated several award-winning short films and also works in commercials and as a digital FX artist. In addition to freelance jobs, Laakso teaches stop motion in Turku Arts Academy. Laakso is the current leader of Turun Anikistit ry, an animation collective specialized in independent animation. He is also part of COOP Paperhat, another indie animation group. Laakso’s main interest is to tell stories, whatever the technique. Mainly he focuses on stop motion because it is grounded to the real world and its limitations, but also allows a mix of fantastical elements and effects. In many of his films, the real world collides with strange and surprising events. Mystery, horror and weirdness are his favourite themes. Joonas Allonen is a Finnish screenwriter-director born in 1981. He graduated from Turku Arts Academy in 2006 and has since been working as a writer and director in TV and theatre as well as commercials and short films. Allonen is fascinated by sosio-politics and motivations that drive individuals, as well as mythologies and he often combines these interests in his stories. As a filmmaker he often tells stories of underdogs trying to laugh through their tears. Allonen is best known for his style combining dark comedy, heightened realism and expressive visuals. DIRECTORS PRODUCER Jupe Louhelainen (born in 1977) has 15 years’ experience in the film industry. Jupe began his career in crew work. Several TVCs and motion picture productions have led to producer roles. Jupe is a founding member of Twisted Films and has been working as an in-house director/producer since 2006. Over the years Jupe has produced a sizeable number of film and animation-productions. With a strong technical background and knowledge of the whole production workflow, Jupe has become a very talented producer with good know-how. He is at the leading edge in creative work with strong visualizations. As a producer he is driven by strong story-lines with clear points of view. Basic love stories are not for him. In a rainforest amidst lush nature, fragile porcelain animals can be found. Strange white stony creatures are born in wild river streams, birds with feet like human fingers hunt for flying fish, vicious spiders catch miniature dancers in their traps... This is a surreal world inhabited by creatures never seen before. Time here passes in a strange way moving in an unexpected paste. As the film is shot in nature, the changes of light create a strange shift between the passing of time and the movement of the characters. Tropical nature, ceramic creatures, Estonian music and sounds of northern nature form a surreal world with the bizarre sensation of seeing something unknown but familiar at the same time. SYNOPSIS Nukufilm is the oldest and largest stop motion studio in Northern Europe established in 1957 and located in Tallinn, Estonia. Nukufilm has world-class facilities for stop motion animation matched with a high energy team of more than 30 professionals. Nukufilm offers creative and production services to customers wanting to shoot stop motion in a studio environment with a highly qualified award-winning crew or in need of fresh creative ideas from award-winning filmmakers. Anu-Laura Tuttelberg graduated with an MA degree in animation at Estonian Academy of Arts in 2013. She made her first animation Fly Mill (7’, 2011), a puppet film as her graduation film. Fly Mill has screened in numerous festivals around the world and won more than 20 prizes. Her first film after graduation, a short animated film On the Other Side of the Woods (10’) premiered in June 2014 at Annecy International Animation Festival and has won several international prizes including three First Prizes. She works as a set designer for stop motion animations. Currently she is working on puppet design for a feature stop motion Morten on the Ship of Fools by Kaspar Jancis and on a set design for a short stop motion film Empty Space by Ülo Pikkov in Nukufilm studio. DIRECTOR PRODUCER Andrus Raudsalu has been on the front-line of the media industry in the Baltic States for more than a decade, as co-founder and CEO of the largest Internet media company in the region - Delfi Group. In 2011 Andrus joined Nukufilm as CEO and producer. He has produced 13 animated shorts (including Annecy 2015 Jury Award winning Isand – 18’, directed by Riho Unt) and one animated feature - Lisa Limone and Maroc Orange (72’, 2013, directed by Mait Laas). Second feature - Morten on the Ship of Fools (directed by Kaspar Jancis) is currently in production and will be released in 2017. Andrus is chairman of the Estonian National Film Producers Association and member of the board of the Estonian Film Cluster and Estonian Chamber of Culture. He teaches animation production in the Estonian Academy of Arts. Emma has a strange belief, in which she sees her body and life not as a human but as a plant. Everyday life and wonders intertwine so naturally that it makes it impossible to separate them. This helps her to survive the historical storms of the 20th century. SYNOPSIS Born in Hungary, Tibor Banoczki and Sarolta Szabo live and work in Budapest. Founders of the Art group “Domestic Infelicity” they have worked together on several photography and animation projects. Their last two shorts films Les conquérants (12’, 2012) and Leftover (14’, 2014) achieved great success in festivals (Clermont-Ferrand - ACSE’s award, press award in 2013, Annecy, Sundance ...) and a pre-selection for the Césars for both films. DIRECTORS PRODUCER Sébastien Hussenot has produced more than 66 short films, 13 documentaries, 2 feature length films, selected for multiple international film festivals (Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, Toronto, Abu Dhabi, Odense, Cork, Tampere, Vienne, Larissa, Koln, Sao Palo, Flikerfest etc...), an Oscar nomination in 2009, and multiple awards (Clermont-Ferrand, Abu Dhabi, Toronto, ...). La Luna Productions is a film production company founded in 1994 by Sébastien Hussenot. Fiction, documentaries and more recently animations are all part of the range found in our catalogue. They are driven by the desire to reveal and support filmmakers, talent and build cinematography over time. This is the first time Dima has heard from him in more than 35 years. Trapped in a web of bureaucracy and destitute, Dima decides to drive the corpse home in the rooftop trunk of his car. On the road back to Bulgaria, we witness an emotional journey of a father who has outlived regret and a son still in need of revenge, driving down memory lane and through border control. The journey comes to a sudden end, when Dima faces an unexpected dilemma, and his choice is both surprising and inevitable. SYNOPSIS Portokal is a creative lab that brings together talented young professionals working in the areas of filmmaking, photography and video, supporting them in the development, production and distribution of their author-driven work since 2000. They hold a deep commitment to social change through art, and have worked on a variety of social justice projects in both film and photography with the support of Soros Foundation, Open Society Institute, CARE International, Workshop for Civic Initiatives Foundation, etc. Svetoslav Stoyanov is a director and DOP whose awardwinning feature film debut, The Last Black Sea Pirates (72’, 2013) has competed in some of the world’s best documentary festivals, including Visions du Reel, HotDocs and DOK Leipzig. His live action/ animation short, Angel (2002), won The Golden Wheel for best animated and TV programme at the Roma Festival for TV and Radio Programs in Skopje and for Best Film screened in the Week of Roma Cinema in Berlin. His short documentaries, experimental films and audio-visual projects have been exhibited across Europe and selected within the official competitions of festivals in Madrid, Moscow, Dublin, Ljubljana and the Venice Biennial. DIRECTOR PRODUCER Vanya Rainova is an awardwinning writer and producer who produced Pride (30’, 2013), which opened in the Locarno Film Festival and went on to win the Grand Prix at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and a nomination for the European Film Awards, among other recognitions. Vanya also co-authored The Last Black Sea Pirates (72’, 2013), winner of the Golden Apricot for Best Documentary, the FIPRECI Award from the Krakow Film Festival and several other important awards and nominations. Both films have a total of 7 Bulgarian Film Academy nominations and 4 wins. Before walking into the world of filmmaking, Vanya was managing editor of Bulgaria’s only English-language newspaper, The Sofia Echo, and Director of Marketing and Communications for the Children’s Hospital & Research Center in Oakland, California. It is the meeting of two completely different worlds. Magdalene, a dentist, represents a sterile urban life but her mother is like a mad fairy from the woods. When the mother discovers that her daughter has not come for a visit but just to pack the rest of her things and that she is moving out of her parents’ house and not planning to come back ever, the trouble begins. Although Magdalene finds the whole house and her mother unsympathetic, something strongly attracts her to it. And not just her, especially her son. He is charmed by the old fishing rods, fish trophies and above all the weird fauna that permeate the entire house. Why is it so difficult to leave? And why does the mother behave as if the father is still alive? SYNOPSIS Founded in 1995, Negativ focuses on producing high-quality arthouse films. Negativ has four partners – Pavel Strnad, Petr Oukropec, Katerina Cerna and Milan Kuchynka - producing fiction, documentary and animation films with top Czech directors (e.g. Bohdan Slama, Helena Trestikova, Michaela Pavlatova). Negativ’s films have received 34 Czech Academy Awards, including three for the Best Film and one for the Best Documentary, and have taken home more than 50 international awards. The latest production, documentary film Mallory (101’, 2015) by Helena Trestikova, was awarded the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary IFF for the Best Documentary. COMPANY Jakub Kouril is film director, screenwriter and illustrator. He graduated with a Master’s degree from FAMY in Prague under the leadership of dramaturgist Jiri Kubicek at the Department of Animation. His student films M. O. (7‘, 2012) and The Little Cousteau (9‘, 2014) achieved great success at home and abroad. The film M.O. was a finalist in the 2013 Student Academy Award. Among other prizes Jakub is the double holder of the Magnesia Award for student film, which is granted within the Czech Lions Award scheme. Jakub is currently working on several projects, from music videos to the illustration of books, and along with screenwriter Kristina Nedvedova, is preparing his debut live action short film The Watersprite. DIRECTOR PRODUCER Pavel Strnad graduated from Prague’s FAMU where he studied film production. He is a co-founder of Negativ, one of the leading production companies in the Czech Republic. He has produced more than 30 fiction, documentary and animation films, among others Year of the Devil (88’), awarded by the Crystal Globe at the Karvoly Vary IFF in 2002, Something Like Happiness (102’) which received the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian IFF in 2005 and two winners of the European Film Academy Award – René (83’) for the Best Documentary in 2008 and Alois Nebel (84’) for the Best Animation Feature in 2012. It’s the only child around, all the village residents being over 60 years old (excluding the parents, who are close to 40). He’s a bundle of joy and everyone goes to see the boy and dote on him. His mother ends up dying after a while and the father soon follows suit. He is taken care of by the whole village, finding in each man and woman a father and a mother or, to be more exact, a grandfather and a grandmother. As he grows up, he becomes a vital element in the village’s day-to-day life, helping others with the things that they can’t do. SYNOPSIS Terratreme Filmes is a film production unit composed of six directors and producers searching for new production models that allow them greater freedom and autonomy in their creative processes. The goal is to combine research, education and film creation within a logic of production based on director autonomy. In its ten years’ experience, Terratreme has consolidated its expertise in film production and distribution. Currently, it seeks to gain a foothold internationally, by participating in numerous ongoing co-productions and several international film festivals. The films produced by Terratreme have been shown at many festivals around the world, such as Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Vienna, IndieLisboa, Vila do Conde, Marseille, Nyon, etc. COMPANY João Vladimiro holds a B.A. in Communication Design from the University of Porto’s Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2006, he took the documentary filmmaking course held by the Ateliers Varan at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. During that time, he directed Foot on the Ground (20’), for which he received the Best Portuguese Short Film Director Award at the third IndieLisboa. In 2007 he directed the documentary Garden (70’), which premiered at Doclisboa in 2008 and was shown at international film festivals, like FID Marseille and Mar de Plata (in Argentina). In 2013, he finished his second feature film, Lacrau (99’), which premiered at the 10th IndieLisboa and won him the Best Portuguese Feature Film Award and the Tree of Life Award. The film was screened at numerous renowned festivals, like FID Marseille, Rio de Janeiro, Vienalle, Sevilla, among others. In 2014, at the request of Madalena Victorino, he directed a documentary about the creation of her dance performance The Wool and the Snow (90’), which premiered at Doclisboa that same year. DIRECTOR PRODUCER João Matos has worked as a producer since 2002, collaborating with directors such as Susana Nobre, João Vladimiro or Leonor Noivo, and companies like Artistas Unidos and Alfama Filmes. He is currently based at Terratreme Filmes where he produced Pedro Pinho’s debut feature The End of the World (62’, 2013) and João Vladimiro’s docufiction Lacrau (99’, 2013). João is now in preproduction the feature film The Factory, scheduled for premiere in 2015, and short films by João Rosas, Susana Nobre or Leonor Noivo (in selection at Euro Connection 2014), as well as documentaries by Tiago Hespanha, Cláudia Varejão or Miguel Seabra Lopes. Part documentary, part fiction, the film takes Hubert Aquin’s cine-novel Neige Noire (1974) as a starting point to explore the effect that cinematic memory has on personal and collective identity and how tourism is a type of cinematic fiction in the Anthropocene era. Using the town as a ready-made film set and working with actors and real characters, the film combines re-enactments of scenes from Soviet cinema with the reality of Pyramiden - past and present. SYNOPSIS a_BAHN is a documentary and fiction film production company specialized in new storytellings and virtual reality. The company thrives at the intersection of two industries: the creative one, where cinema and storytelling are our domains of predilection, and the new technologies one, always moving forward. Pioneering in Luxembourg and France in new storytellings for more than 4 years now, they create and produce experiences based on live, animation and virtual images and sounds. Filmfabriq is currently developing the first feature movies of Bálint Szimler, Attila Hartung and the duo of Bálint Nagy and Nándor Lorincz. The company is currently working on a creative documentary about Hungary’s first new circus company, entitled What a Circus! and filming will soon be underway for Attila Hartung’s short Paparazzi. The Polish feature Life Must Go On! line produced by the company was the n°1 film in Poland for two consecutive weeks in August 2015. Further co-productions include mostly projects with France and Poland. COMPANY PRODUCER Born in 1985, Gábor Osváth graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts of Budapest. The first film he produced was a school project (Here I Am) but it ended up at Cannes Cinefondation and later as a Europe Film Award short film nominee. He formed his company Filmfabriq in 2012, which in the past three years has become a strong force in the Hungarian film industry, with a big slate of short films, documentaries and service productions. Osváth also recently produced the feature music documentary Balaton Method (85’, 2015) and is also behind the French-Hungarian animation LOVE by Réka Bucsi. It is a vibrant production dealing both with commercial TV and web projects, but its ambitions mainly lie in fiction and documentary filmmaking. COMPANY PRODUCER Marko Kumer Mur č is a Slovene producer and filmmaker who was born in 1980 and lives in Ljubljana (Slovenia). Founder of the Smehomat Production, he mainly works as a producer, director and screenwriter. He has worked in different culture related projects as an author or producer. His work in the past combines many different fields from art in public spaces to videoart and poetry, but in last few years his main focus has been in the field of film. He acted as a producer of several short films as well as some documentary films, namely widely shown and debated Utopia in Green, 50’, Oder na robu, Kurent… He is currently directing and producing a documentary City of Light, which has been successful in both the National TV and National Film Centre calls for coproduction.
