Rosebery Middle School Newsletter
Rosebery Middle School Newsletter “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Henry Ford Lorraine Evans Principal Dear Rosebery Parents and Dear Parents, Families andCarers, Carers, bigger and better things. If you are interested in joining this amazing team please come along on the night and enjoy light refreshments and great conversation. Another opportunity to engage with RMS will be coming up in Week 10 of this term. Results from all our baseline tests and teacher observations have been used to assess how your child is travelling so far – and where teachers have a concern, you will have been invited for an interview. Please take up the invitation so that we can work together to address any identified issues or gaps. If you haven’t been asked for an interview but are interested in your child’s results so far, please do contact us for an interview, where teachers will be happy to share your child’s results, work habits and progress. PARTNERSHIPS It was great to see so many of you at our Meet and Greet Evening on Wednesday 11th February – if you were unable to attend please get in touch to make an alternative time to meet your child’s teachers. I really enjoyed meeting parents on their way to meet our dedicated teachers – and hearing their observations and comments on the way out. A big thanks to everyone who completed a parent survey – I am still collecting if you haven’t returned yours or would like a copy - and the shopping voucher winner will be announced before the end of As the quote at the beginning of this newsletter term. says: “Working together is success.” Our partnership with the families and carers of our students is critical to the success of the work we do at RMS. Our next formal get together will be our AGM to be held on Tuesday 17th March at 5.30pm in the Staff Room – we would love to see you there. Our 2014 Annual Report highlights will be presented and discussed - so a great opportunity to review the year that was. WELLBEING As we approach the end of our first term for 2015, time has certainly flown by in a blur of learning, leading, assessments and getting to know one another. Our Year 7 students and students new to our school community are now confident of where they are going, who their teachers are and what is meant by our school values of Respect, Team Safety and Bravery. Hopefully you have seen a postcard or two Our School Council team has been together make its way home in recognition of living by since 2010 – through establishing ourselves as those school values and expectations. an incorporated body, through to our first elections and on to become a very cohesive and As well as recognising individual dedication and supportive body of parents and families. We achievement, from time to time RMS holds are seeking more parents to represent our year whole school events to celebrate of our school 7 students and take our school on to even culture. The next whole school event, thanks to our Well Being Team is set to unfold on th March 20 with a combined day to mark both the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Harmony Day. It is a day when as a whole school, we will celebrate our ongoing work to create a safe and calm learning environment for every student. RMS sees learning as a social process and as such, we see that it is part of our role to develop student's social skills, assisting them to develop healthy, respectful and safe relationships in real time and online. Adolescence will not get it right first time, or even every time but we invest time in teaching and learning programs to develop students' communication, social, assertiveness and coping skills. Supporting students as they develop their social skills successfully needs school communities working together in an ongoing way with staff, students and families to recognise, challenge and address any issues that arise within the school so that our students can be the confident connected global citizens we know they can be. We would love to see as many parents and families here on March 20th to show your support for and engagement in your child’s education. dividual needs and where relevant to include further support or challenge. In addition, through our partnership with RMIT University Melbourne, each student has participated in assessment of their multiplicative thinking and placed in their current Zone of understanding and skill. Again this will be used by teachers to plan and program for each zone (1-8) to maximise learning for each student. For our teachers, research-based materials are used to deepen teacher knowledge in this domain and improve responsiveness to student learning needs. In another key priority for 2015, every RMS teacher including the leadership team, has undergone training in Visible Learning – based on the work of Dr John Hattie. Over the next three years RMS will work closely with the Cognition team to enhance our feedback to students, our ability to take a student forward and raise our student achievement results. Exciting times and so much to learn! In closing, many thanks for all your support and feedback across Term One, I look forward to seeing you and catching up. Enjoy the upcoming break! Regards If you would like more information about any aspect of the RMS policies or procedures around bullying, behaviour or any other matter please do not hesitate to contact the school to ask a question or make a time to come in and see us. TEACHING AND LEARNING As part of its evidence based practice, since the beginning of term, every new student has completed ACER online assessments in four areas – Maths, Science, Reading and General Ability tests. Alan, Jordan and Ethan had fun trying on sunglasses and Alan, Jordan and Justin tried on the masks. Ranger Mike Visit Ranger Mike came to Pathways to show us a Crocodile skull. Students held the skull and Ranger Mike talked about how dangerous Crocodiles are. Crocodiles can grow up to 20ft long and live for many years. Crocodiles live all over the Territory. Never swim where there are crocs. - Tia Barba Ranger Mike came to educate us in crocs and show us two croc skulls. He told us to swim in water only with the safe croc signs. Never swim in water with a sign saying “No Swimming—CROCODILES” - Jason Dean We had a ranger come to RMS to show us two croc skulls, the first croc he showed us was the freshwater crocodile it has a long snout. They don't bite people. The second croc is the saltwater and if it gets someone it will do a death roll. Ranger Mike said he caught 40 crocs in the harbor and most went to the croc farm. Some are still out there just waiting. - Lauchlan Newport School Attendance Every Day Counts For those that don’t know me my name is Sheryle Heavey and I am the Home Liaison Officer at Rosebery Middle School. A big part of my role is to follow up students who have unexplained and continuing absences and to assist and provide support to students and families who are experiencing difficulties with their child’s education. If you wish to discuss any issues please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone 8930 5200 or email [email protected] Rosebery Middle School (RMS) aims to provide the best possible educational opportunities for your teenager by encouraging them to develop their potential through the pursuit of personal and academic excellence. To do this student’s must attend school every day. By now all parents should have received the Rosebery Middle School Attendance Policy which was mailed out with last year’s school reports. For students who commenced this year it was part of the enrolment package. Please remember you MUST notify the school every time your child is absent. You can do this several ways: Phone: 08 8930 5230 Absentee line: 08 8930 5240 Fax: 08 8930 5399 Email: [email protected] or [email protected] or email your child’s teacher App: Skoolbag Rosebery Middle School Note: send a signed note into school explaining absences. At RMS, student attendance is a high priority. We have an expectation that all students will attend a minimum of 95% for the year. Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind academically, socially and developmentally. Getting in Early It’s never too late to improve attendance – going to school more often can lead to better outcomes. Every day counts. RMS is here to help- if you’re having attendance issues with your child, speak to a staff member as early as possible so we can work together to get your child to school every day and to help prevent attendance issues being escalated. School Nurse News from our Health Promoting School Nurse. Immunisations for years 7 & 8 have commenced. No immunisations will be given out without a signed consent form. Your child has received the forms to bring home. All year 7 students offered Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine (HPV-3 doses are needed to complete the course) All year 8 students are offered Boostrix (tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough) as well as Chickenpox. Students who have come from QLD this year may have missed the HPV as given in year 8 there, are also eligible for this now. First Aid First Aid within the school is provided by designated trained First Aid Officers, this is for injuries occurring at school. The First Aid Officers are the first contact for any illness or injury. The students are assessed promptly and referred as necessary. Parents will be contacted if the staff deems this necessary and further treatment is recommended. Health Care Plans If your child has an identified medical condition, parents and guardians should have received paperwork requesting information in regards to this condition. To be able to manage your child’s condition safely and effectively, this information needs to be completed and returned as soon as possible. HPSN Narelle Craufurd 0889305227 Safer Pipes and Drains in Palmerston Water safety programs traditionally focus on improving safety at recognized locations such as backyard swimming pools, beaches and rivers but there are many other places where water might pose a risk, especially to young children. The tragic death of an eight year old in January this year highlighted the huge risk that pipes and storm drains create in the Palmerston area and with school holidays just around the corner now is a perfect time to talk to your children about water safety. It is also a great idea to specifically talk to children about pipes and drains and explain to them that these structures are designed for a purpose and should not be used as playgrounds. The Northern Territory Government is about to launch a new advertising campaign for pipes and drains so keep an eye out for these ads and take the opportunity to talk to your children about the importance of keeping clear of these structures. We are calling on families to ask the City of Palmerston Council to initiate a standard approach to securing all storm drains. Until this happens we need to regularly talk to our children, keep an eye out and report any risks that need urgent attention. To report a fault or damage, phone the 24hr number 8935 9922 or email a complaint to [email protected]. Wishing all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Leadership Conference On 23 February RMS students attended the Grip Leadership Conference in Darwin. Two of the recently elected House Captains, Tyson Woodbury and Jacon Lampton, attended with 14 of our 2015 SRC members. Topics covered in this year’s leadership conference included ‘The House Captain’s Resource Kit’, ‘How to Maximise the Impact of Your Communication’, ‘How to Lead in Different Situations’, and more. Everyone enjoyed the activities and training sessions and came away energised and even more encouraged to make a difference at RMS. Defence Rosebery Students Bombing of Darwin Rosebery Defence students had the honour of attending the Victoria Cross arrival – Borella Ride launch at parliament house on the 3rd February. On 19th February some of our year 9, Defence and Kites student accompanied me, Assistant Principal Krystel Smith and Kites teacher Emma Hegerty to the bombing of Darwin Ceremony. The students were in awe of the fly over by an AP-3C Orion aircraft and the sounding of air raid sirens. Albert Borella journeyed from Tenant Creek to Darwin to in enlist in WW1; he travelled over 1000 kilometers through the Northern Territory outback. Albert fought at Gallipoli and the Western front, were he was wounded, commissioned on the battlefield and awarded the Victoria Cross. Albert Borella is the 9th recipient of the Victoria Cross and the only Territitorian to be awarded this highest valour in combat. Our students presented a guard of honour as the medal arrived and then met and spoke with Albert Borella’s family. The reenactment of the 8/12th Regiment, RAA, firing of seven rounds by M2A2 (105mm) Howitzer guns. Very real with sounding of the guns and coloured smoke filling the skies made the experience all the more real. Two of our students, Lochlain Gibbons and Reshma Matta laid a wreath at the memorial. The students should be proud of themselves as their behaviour and respect shown for this occasion was exemplary. Rosebery Defence Students Guard of Honour Rosebery students once again did themselves proud with their behaviour and respect shown during the ceremony. Albert Borella’s family & Rosebery Defence Students Megan Hensler Defence Transiton Mentor Anzac Day The Returned & Services League of Australian Palmerston Sub-Branch Inc The Palmerston RSL is planning to hold a “Youth Vigil” on the 24th April, the eve of Anzac Day, through to the commencement of the Dawn Service at day break on 25th April 2015. As a part of the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli we are completing our Rosebery memorial garden with a Rising Sun Art Installation, paving around the Garden and reinstalling of our Flagpoles. One of the memorial aspects of our garden is we would like to acknowledge any members of the Australian Defence force – Army, Navy & Air force - from our extended Rosebery Family – staff & students. Please note there is no cost you or your family if you wish to nominate a family member. However there is a limited amount of pavers that are available so if you are interested please contact me on 89305231 or [email protected] Thank you Megan Hensler Defence Transiton Mentor The Youth Vigil is for youth from 11 to 18 years of age. The project will culminate with a Vigil at the Palmerston Memorial in which participating Groups will “Stand To” for 30 minutes at a time around the memorial from Sundown on 24th April 15 until the Dawn Service the following morning. If there are any students interested in being a part of this vigil, I will be helping organized this event and will be at the vigil as a supervisor for RMS Students. RMS Breakfast Club Our Foodbank School Breakfast Club started in week 2 of this term. We have had a fantastic response from students with many attending every day. Students do not only get to eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast, they also get to meet other students and make new friends. The Breakfast Program is a free service available to all students. We are open each morning from 7:15am – 8:00am in the M9 room. The food is generously supplied by FoodBank NT. The menu includes: toast, cereal, fruit, frozen yoghurt, spaghetti and baked bean toasted sandwiches. Proudly co-ordinated by Sheryl Heavey PGA We had a sensational night at our recent Parent Meet and Greet Evening and the feedback from the parents was sensational. There were discussions on how the program can support and tailor that support for each individual. The interest and willingness the parents showed in their girl’s education and well-being was deadly. The parent’s enthusiasm was paramount in ensuring the girls are on the right path to success. We have a great starting point for building and strengthening our parent relationships for 2015. It was so up lifting having the parents words of kindness and support for the staff of PGA and the program. I would like to thank my deadly co-workers Karllina and Jessie on their efforts. A big thanks also to Emma Hegerty & Tracey Burvill for their support on the night. Proudly Supported by: NEWMAN’S OWN FOUNDATION Host School Rosebery Middle School will host one of the ‘heats’ in the Battle of the Bands on 24th March. This is purely run by the NT Music School. We will have a competition to design a new logo for our group and make up a new banner. DeforestAction, as a global group, has seen a lot of success with public awareness putting pressure on companies to source sustainable palm oil and minimise illegal logging. The public is much more aware of the issue but there is still some work to do and we still have 3 beautiful adopted Orangutans to support. Pingky is looking so much healthier, happier and stronger now that she has healed from her abuse being chained up for years. Monti has grown and will soon be ready to graduate from rainforest school and is looking like he will be a strong leader and Gunung is a very cheeky young Orangutan who was the star of a recent documentary. You can catch up with their adventures on www.redapes.org, which is where you can also sponsor your own Orang-utan. There are 2 semester-long courses offered this year in Global Changers using the Kids Go Global platform. It is exciting to see so many students taking action about social and environmental issues and knowing that they can make a difference! We have a lot to do this year and will be looking for anyone who can help students make jewellery or crafts to sell at the Girraween Sustainability Fair and the Palmerston Markets later this year. Our Environmental Science camp in Cairns this year will also support students in their learning about environmental issues and sustainability and will be a very exciting opportunity for students to work with scientists in the endangered areas of the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. A very exciting year! I would like to thank the community members and organisations who have supported us so far and look forward to working with the community this year.
