Friday 22 January 2016 Dear Parents and Carers,
Friday 22 January 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
I am delighted to start this week’s update with the fantastic news that 95% of our Year 11 students achieved A*-C in
their IGCSE English examination. This is, once again, significantly above the national average and is in line with last
year’s performance which placed the English results in the top 2% of results in the country. I am very proud of the
students who worked so hard and of the staff that supported them. We know that there are some students who will
want to retake and the English team have a programme in place to support them. Sadly, this cohort are the last who
have the opportunity to follow the IGCSE course or to take exams in November and in June. The government view
such early entry as ‘game playing’ and the IGCSE will no longer be counted in the Performance Tables, making it
impossible for us to continue with it. It is my view that our only agenda is to ensure students have the best possible
opportunity to achieve the highest grade they can, so this is a significant disappointment to us.
Our theme for this week has been Leadership and assemblies
have been led by our new Sixth Form Leadership Team. Our new
Head Girls, Freya and Kelly (pictured) have introduced their vision
for their year and promoted their first big event, Rag Week, which
takes place in three weeks’ time, the proceeds from which will go
to the Meningitis Research Foundation. Our Deputy Head Girls
have introduced their new roles as Student Ambassadors.
Samaiyah and Mary are our Student Wellbeing Ambassadors, Em
is our Inclusion Ambassador and Izzy is our Community
Ambassador. They will be working on projects with members of our Junior Leadership Team and we also launched
our quest to find two new members of the team from each year group. Elections will take place on 12 February and
applications are now open for any student who would like to stand.
Our Sports’ Leaders have done a wonderful job this week to organise our 10th House Cheerleading competition. To
see 500 students packed into the Sports Hall every day to support their peers was extremely impressive – almost as
impressive as the first ever staff entry to this competition from which we are all still recovering!
Have a lovely weekend.

Epsom Rotary Young Chef Competition 2016
On Monday 18 January, Epsom Rotary heat was held at
Blenheim School between young chefs from Blenheim and
Rosebery. The brief was to prepare in two hours a three
course healthy meal comprising starter, mains and dessert
for two people costing less than £15.
The chefs had to plan their menus, show costings and
complete a detailed Time Plan. Miral Pankhania 10SY,
Sophie Rose Year 9RX and Amy Church 8RX represented us,
cooking their menus in an intense two-hour period, while Michelle Hope and Sean Mooney, judges from the Canopy
Restaurant in Epsom High Street, and representatives from the Epsom
Rotary Club watched on!
Miral
Sophie
It was a very close competition and the final tables were colourful with
dishes and original presentation. Miral’s themed menu of Tilapia fillet, Chilli
Chicken with basmati rice and a Mango and Cardamom Syllabub was served
with care and great attention to flavour which truly impressed the judges.
Miral was also commended for her very methodical, calm approach and the
organisation of all of her resources. Sophie was congratulated for achieving
second prize and Amy came third, so Rosebery Girls swept the board…Well
Amy
done and congratulations to them all! Miral retains the Cup which, once
engraved, will be on display in the Foyer Cabinet. All three received Rotary
Certificates and LAKELAND Vouchers as sponsors of the event. Miral now moves forward to the District Heat next
month in Oxted and, if successful, to the Regional Final and potentially on to the National Final in April.

It was a great evening to watch, and the lovely aromas produced by our Chefs creations were mouth-watering! All the
competitors worked very hard during the event. It was pleasing that all the students received certificates for their
efforts.
Looking forward to next year’s local heat, which will be held at Rosebery.

Design Technology Careers Talk
On Tuesday 19 January 2016, the Design Technology Department were pleased to invite guest speakers from within
related industries to deliver a presentation about Careers Opportunities which spring from the study of Design and
Technology.
The girls were focused and listened carefully to the presentations, which included Ms Hannah Stanwix from The Gatsby
Institute that promotes engineering; Ms Tamara Melvin, an independent designer and finalist from the Great British
Sewing Bee; and also Mrs Susan Church, a registered nutritionist.
Hannah shared with us the vast range of engineering opportunities available and had the girls thinking about links
between engineering and everyday products. Tamara shared her story and touched on the growing range of careers
in textiles, including Fashion Journalism, Stylists, Merchandising and her new adventure into designing, Felt Kits. Susan
shared with the girls her career path and explained about her many roles in this field, including government advice
and her experience as a nutritional analysist. We are very grateful to all our guests for sharing their passion for the
subject and taking the time to spend the day with us.
The girls were given chance to ask questions and ponder the many opportunities that Design and Technology can offer.
The PowerPoint presentation is on the DT section of the hub for students, for further reference. Please ask your
daughter to share this with you.
DT team: Mrs Hanly, Mrs Barlow, Mrs Brundish and Miss Haggis.

I am regularly asked to authorise holidays by parents during term time. I am afraid that I cannot authorise any
absence except that linked to an educational activity, such as participation in a sporting event, a performance, or
a music or drama exam. It is incumbent upon me to remind you that parents who choose to remove their children
for a holiday during term time, which has not been authorised, are liable for a penalty notice for each child. Good
attendance really matters; research has shown that students with 90% attendance or less generally achieve a grade
lower at GCSE than those with attendance of higher than 90% attendance. I am very grateful for your support in
ensuring your daughter attends school punctually and regularly.
Reporting Absence – Please can I ask you to ensure that student absence is reported directly to our Attendance
Officer, Mrs Day, on the dedicated student absence line 01372
845469.
Our newly revised Attendance Policy can be viewed via the Website.
