It is estimated that US urban park trees alone remove 75,000 tons of air pollutants annually. This translates into an economic benefit of $500 million each year. –NRPA In 2010, there were approximately 408,998 local and state employees in parks and recreation according to the U.S. Census Survey for Public Employment and Payroll. The Trust for Public Land conducted a study on the economic value of city park systems and through their sample found that parks can contribute to the value of residential properties immediately adjacent to a park by as much as a 20 percent marginal value. For properties further away from the location of the park, parks still can provide as much as a 5 to 10 percent marginal value. -NRPA A study conducted on Seattle’s park and recreation system revealed that Seattle’s residents were able to save $64 million in medical costs as a result of participating in physical activity in the parks -Trust for Public Land What Can Recreation departments Do? “It costs approximately $30,000 to incarcerate a juvenile offender for one year. If that money were available to Parks and Recreation, we could do the following: Take them swimming twice a week for 24 weeks. Give them four tours of the zoos, plus lunch Enroll them in 50 community center programs Visit the Nature Center twice Let them play league softball for a season Tour the gardens at the park twice Give them two weeks of tennis lessons Enroll them in two weeks of day camp Let them play three rounds of golf Let them act in one play Let them participate in one fishing clinic Let them take a four week pottery class Let them play basketball 8 hours a week for 40 weeks After which we could return to you: $29,125 and one much happier kid! -Reprinted courtesy of Parks & Recreation, National Recreation & Park Association”* *Introduction to Recreation and Leisure. 2nd edition.
