The Link A Monthly Publication of Fairhope United Methodist Church - A Stephen Ministry Congregation FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR SMALL DEEDS WITH BIG RESULTS I have learned through the years as a pastor that a strong church will always have a strong mission program. We are blessed to have a great missions program and have had good leadership across the years. I am thankful for people like Jennifer Myrick, current Missions Chair, Steve Pearson, Lany Simmons, and others who have been invaluable in their leadership of mission ministries through Fairhope United Methodist Church. Recently, I received a letter from Bishop Paul Leeland, our resident Bishop, thanking Fairhope UMC for giving 168% of our goal to stop malaria in Africa. (See next page). In Matthew 10:42 and Mark 9:41, we find the words of Jesus: “even a cup of cold water given in my name shall be rewarded.” Can you imagine not having clean water to drink? We can’t conceive of something so terrible, yet there are so many places in the world where children are dying at an alarming rate because of disease from dirty water they have to drink. One of our current mission projects is WATER 282. This ministry is digging wells in Zambia to bring clean drinking water to communities. Women and children are walking to get water from polluted rivers to bring back for their families to use. The walks require hours each day and some children have been killed by crocodiles and wild animals as they draw the water from the dirty streams. This also keeps them from being in school, where they need to be. This wonderful project digs a well, that is paid for by sponsoring churches and agencies, that brings clean water for use. The cost is seven thousand dollars to dig a well and FAIRHOPE UMC HAS A WELL THAT IS NOW IN OPERATION IN ZAMBIA. Soon you will see a video sent by the community leaders in Zambia thanking the church for this source of life! It is a moving video and makes you feel good about fulfilling the words of Jesus in Matthew and Mark. We will continue to help dig more wells and give life to these who have such desperate need in Zambia. Thanks for your good work. May 2015 From the Pastor New Members From the Pastor (Cont.) We join with other churches to provide this ministry several times throughout the year here within our facilities. Thanks to Lany Simmons for chairing this ministry and to all who volunteer. REPAIR BALDWIN: Thanks to Jared Scheeter and his crew who make repairs on homes for needy citizens. Good work Jared! THE RIDDEN WORD: This is one of our new mission projects that provides bicycles to those needing transportation and children whose families cannot afford one. These are repaired bikes that have scriptures painted on them to remind everyone that God rides with you. We join in supporting this ministry that is located in Robertsdale. RANSOM CAFÉ: We are grateful for this wonderful ministry that feeds the hungry and offers a trailer with showers and a washer/dryer for the homeless. They are in the Christian Life Center each Friday to offer meals to anyone who would like to eat. We help offset the costs of meals with donations and spend time with those who need the fellowship of others. COSTA RICA MISSIONS: We have a long standing ministry in Costa Rica, where we send groups down to provide Vacation Bible School, needed items, and work in a facility that provides a home for boys and girls who were left on the streets. Mike McKnight [email protected] LORD’S PANTRY: Nearly every day of the week, we have people who come by needing food to help them feed their families. Thanks to those who give needed items and help with the work of the Food Pantry. COMMUNION FUND: On the first Sunday of each month, when we receive Holy Communion in the sanctuary, funds are left on the altar to help people who call on the church in a time of need. The situations differ with each person but, thanks to your contributions, we are able to help. We also support ECUMENICAL MINISTRIES with some of these funds. This is one of the outstanding ministries within our community. DISASTER RESPONSE: We provide training, supplies, and information on disasters that affect our local area, as well as national and global disasters. We keep a supply of flood buckets that are given in times of flooding and other clean up needs. These are only some of the wonderful ministries that join with others, like YOUTH MISSIONS. Thanks to Rachael Waldhour for her leadership with the youth mission efforts. It’s easy to see that if you want to be involved in missions, Fairhope United Methodist Church is a good place to be! Remember: “if you offer even a cup of cold water in my name, you will be blessed.” Thanks for all you do in sharing the love of Christ! I’ll see you in church. Mike STAFF PARISH RELATIONS REPORT Chairperson GLORIA FISHER The Staff/Parish Relations Committee is happy to announce that Reverend Dr. Ed. Glaize has been appointed to serve as our new minister beginning in July. Dr. Glaize is currently serving as pastor of Brewton UMC where he has been for 10 years. Prior to that, he served as pastor at Beulah and Tallassee and was associate pastor at Montgomery UMC. He is a graduate of Huntingdon College and Emory University and has served in the Air Force. He is married to Alecia and they have two college-age children, Curtis and Anna Grace. Please continue to pray for the Glaizes as they make the transition to our church and our community. We look forward to making them feel welcome and serving alongside them in ministry. www.fairhopeumc.org page 2 FROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR Rev. Laura Parker [email protected] Deviled Eggs and Grace Dear Church Family, Well, a lot has happened in my life since the last Link was published. As most of you know, my sweet husband, Paul, lost his battle with cancer and died on April 9th. We held a joyful service of remembrance here at the church the following Sunday afternoon. If you didn’t know him, Paul was one of the happiest persons you would ever meet. All through his illness, it was not unusual for him to look at me and say, “We are so blessed, aren’t we?” And he truly felt that way. And he was right. We were and ARE blessed. You are a blessing and you have been grace to me during difficult days. You have offered grace in many ways…writing cards, bringing food, hauling extra chairs and tables to our house, sending flowers and beautiful plants, giving me great big bear hugs, letting me know you’ve been praying, picking up the slack where I’ve been absent from my work responsibilities, emailing and texting to let me know you are there…and in so many ways I can’t even begin to list them all. One of my church friends brought deviled eggs to the house after Paul’s memorial service. I spent most of the time visiting with family and friends who had come long distances to be with us. Finally, someone realized I hadn’t eaten and brought me a plate. There were no deviled eggs! Apparently, grief has not diminished my love of deviled eggs, so I went in search of them. They were gone. Because I had heard rumblings in the crowd about the exceptional quality of the eggs, I was deeply disappointed. But two days later in the midst of one of the torrential downpours we experienced that week, my friend came calling with a platter of deviled eggs just for me. GRACE had arrived on my doorstep! Friends, never underestimate the power of the little things to make all the difference in the lives of others. Grace comes in many ways. And you have delivered it over and over again to me and to our boys, Tyler and Andrew. We can’t thank you enough. But I’ll do my best to try. Thank you, and God’s blessings! Laura, Tyler and Andrew Parker MISSIONS MINISTRIES Thank you to everyone who supported Stop Hunger Now! Together we were able to package over 30,000 meals! The Costa Rica Mission team will be collecting toiletry items for the juvenile prison in Costa Rica. The prison is equipped to care for 65 juveniles. There are 197 teens living in the prison. The team will be visiting the prison in May and delivering Toiletry Kits. Items needed: toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and bars of soap Please drop items by the church office by MAY 15TH! Joe and Marilyn Bullington on the Holy Land Pilgrimage 2016 March 28 - April 6, 2016 Dear Friends, As you probably know, we have been working in Jerusalem for 3 months each year for the six years of our retirement. We have come to know the Holy Land very well. We have put together a customized itinerary that will include places that the standard tours don't go. We are so excited to offer this opportunity to experience the Holy Land in ways that most travelers are not privileged to experience. This is especially true for us since this will probably be the last trip we will lead to the Holy Land. Many of you have said that a Holy Land Pilgrimage is on your "bucket list," and that when you went, you wanted to go with us. Well, this is your chance! Please join us this time. Brochures are available in the literature racks outside the church office, in the Christian Life Center and on the church website. Contact us at 928-5881 if you have questions.
