This community: Believes and proclaims that Jesus Christ is Lord; Calls its people to experience and put into practice the love of Jesus Christ; Draws its people into the social and spiritual life of the parish so that each has a sense of belonging; Seeks to help its members take on the "mind of Christ" through prayer, study and worship; Uses and returns the gifts and talents God has given; Is itself a sign calling its members to hear and respond in ministry to the spiritual and temporal needs of people within the parish and beyond. SACRED HEART CHURCH · WEST DES MOINES, IA · PAGE 2 PASTORAL CARE If I can be of assistance to you or a loved one, please contact me. I have many resources to share with you. Deacon Ed Garza [email protected] Pastoral Care Last week’s bulletin introduced The Healing Power of Forgiveness by Ty Bollinger of the Mayo Clinic. It is a lengthy article, so I broke it into three parts. This week’s section is part 2. I hope it is helpful for all of you. This is the essence of forgiveness: extending grace to others and letting go of the ways in which they’ve harmed you, in order to foster reconciliation and peace. In Lewis’ case, forgiveness came a lot easier because Wallace was no longer his old self, having had his eyes opened to the fact that his former wrongs needed to be made right. But even if Wallace hadn’t experienced this dramatic life change, forgiveness still would have been in the best interest of Lewis. Not only for his conscience’s sake, but also for his own peace of mind. Holding Grudges Eats Away at You. The fact of the matter is that forgiveness is a two-way street. It has the power to heal the forgiver just as much as the one being forgiven − something that many of us often forget. Holding onto grudges and bottling up negative emotions that stem from past grievances only makes the situation worse for the one who was wounded in the first place. In the end, it eats away at you emotionally and physically. In order to find release and move forward from past wounds, it’s absolutely vital to learn how to forgive those who’ve harmed you and let it go. The Bible describes this process as “turning the other cheek,” which involves not only treating others how you wish to be treated (even when they treat you wrongly!), but also recognizing that we’re all flawed and in need of forgiveness. In a practical sense, it’s mastering the art of letting go. Whether it be letting go of anger, resentment, bitterness, or a feeling of needing to “get even” with someone for hurting or betraying you. When you fail to forgive, you end up hurting yourself more than the person who hurt you. But when you embrace forgiveness, you release all the pain, distress, and baggage that, if left unchecked, interferes with your emotional, spiritual, and even physical wellbeing. Just a reminder Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus and the Pastoral Care Ministry Office is presenting a workshop, entitled “Life is Like a Piano: Playing Tunes to Change Your Life” an evening with Sal Salgado on Sept. 27, 2016 from 7:00 – 9:00. The workshop will offer strategies to live life to the max as God intended of us to live. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. More information to follow in the weeks ahead. There are three groups, or "orders," of ordained ministers in the Church: bishops, presbyters and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came "to serve and not to be served." The entire Church is called by Christ to serve, and the deacon, in virtue of his sacramental ordination and through his various ministries, is to be a servant in a servant-Church. As ministers of Word, deacons proclaim the Gospel, preach, and teach in the name of the Church. As ministers of Sacrament, deacons baptize, lead the faithful in prayer, witness marriages, and conduct wake and funeral services. As ministers of Charity, deacons are leaders in identifying the needs of others, then marshaling the Church's resources to meet those needs. Deacons are also dedicated to eliminating the injustices or inequities that cause such needs. But no matter what specific functions a deacon performs, they flow from his sacramental identity. In other words, it is not only WHAT a deacon does, but WHO a deacon is, that is important. - USCCB.org SACRED HEART CHURCH · WEST DES MOINES, IA · PAGE 4 FOR ALL PARISHIONERS TRAINING There will be a training session for new Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist on Monday, September 12 at 7 pm in the sanctuary.
