June 2015 ArtistVoice - Paso Robles Art Association
President’s message
Successful organizations are always looking at ways to improve and come up with fresh ideas. Recently the board watched a Ted Talk about interactive
art spaces. (Thank you Carolyn Braun for bringing this to our attention.) You can find it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIcwIH1vZ9w. It got us
thinking about what we could do in the gallery to connect our visitors to art. Take a look at the video and help us determine how to incorporate these
ideas into our gallery space.
Another new idea is to change our general meeting time so that those who work the normal 8 to 5 day can still attend. Many times prospective members
ask about our meeting times and when told we meet at 10 a.m., reply that they will be at work. Beginning in September the board has decided to move
the meeting time to 6:30 pm on the second Monday with the speaker beginning at 7 p.m. We hope this time can accommodate most of our members. If
nighttime driving is an issue for you, let me know and I will try to find you a ride.
Other new ideas relate to creating additional “fun”draisers. Ideas under discussion include sales of art tiles, greeting cards, painted magnum bottles,
and an art “garage sale,” possibly at a local winery. Stay tuned for more information as we explore these ideas. If you have additional ideas, let the
board know. We can always use more creative ideas and helping hands. This all-volunteer organization values you and needs your creativity! You are
always welcome to attend the board meetings on the fourth Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the gallery.

Volunteer Spotlight
What a wonderful ArtFest this year! Your Paso Robles Art Association was well represented. We offered the Creative Collage booth where adults and
children were making fabulous collages non-stop. Thank you to Rosa Lee Sonney, Pat Seimer, Debra Schnell, Carlota Santa Cruz, Susan Naughton,
Charlene Martyn, Ginnie Laroi, Bob Lata, Paula DelConte, Barbara Brogan, and Deprise Brescia for helping with the collages. There were lots of other
members also helping in various ways--greeting people, offering other art activities, offering their fine artwork for sale, and helping where ever needed.
It was a fabulous event, which brought a lot of attention to the arts and Paso Robles. Consider volunteering and joining the fun next year.
Volunteer Opportunities
Help put together the next Arte de Tiza chalk art event in September by volunteering. Arte de Tiza is held in conjunction with the downtown Paso Robles
Main Street Association’s “Taste of Downtown” and the funds raised through sponsorships and donations provide scholarships for north county art students
at Cuesta College. This entire event is made possible by community-minded people and businesses like you! For more info contact Carolyn Loeppke at
[email protected]
Come join the fun and attend our Small Treasures Committee planning meetings in the Showroom Gallery. Small Treasures is PRAA’s major
fundraiser held in November each year. For more info contact Barbara Brogan, [email protected]
Docents: We can always use more docents for the gallery. Contact Jewel DeMoss at [email protected] for more info. You get to meet
interesting people and can also work on your own art at the same time.
New Policy – No Fees For Bin Work
The Board of Directors has decided to discontinue the entry fees for bin work. Bin work is accepted during “bring-in” for the regular juried exhibits,
except that it is not juried. You set the price and keep 60% when your bin work sells. Two-dimensional work should be labeled (title and artist name on
the back) and enclosed in a clear bag. No more than four works per exhibit are accepted. For a download of the binwork form go to:
http://www.pasoroblesartassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Bin-Work-form-5-26-2015.pdf

General Meeting & Presentation: Monday - June 8 - 10 am till Noon
Come join the conversation at our general meeting Monday June 8th from 10 to Noon at the
Showroom Gallery for updates with the Paso Robles Art Association. At 11 am Templeton artist
Stephen E. Price will join us for a presentation.
Stephen Price has been a professional artist for thirty-six years. His plein-air paintings, acrylic
landscapes, watercolors, airbrush art, trompe l’oeil and fine art murals are in galleries and private
collections on many continents. Recently he completed a 6,300 sq ft Italian vineyard walk-in
mural environment on a private estate in California with many trompe l’oeil, or ‘fool-the-eye’
architectural elements.
“I always challenge myself to make things appear as real as I possibly can,” says Price, “whether
it’s the patterns of froth on the face of a wave or a tiny section of deteriorated wood--I enjoy going
very deeply into the details of the visual surface. When the viewer is compelled to reach out and
touch the painting to verify his perceptions, that’s my reward.”
For more info on Stephen go to his website at: http://www.stepheneprice.com/

Finances & Revisions
PRAA Dues Increase
At the last general meeting the membership voted to increase dues to $60 per individual per year beginning with the new fiscal year,
September 1, 2015. There will no longer be a Family Membership category. Membership renewal notices will be sent out in early
September 2015.
It became necessary to increase PRAA dues because we have been running "in the red" for some time now, and only making ends
meet by dipping into reserve savings. Dipping into reserve savings cannot continue over the long run - - we need to balance our
expenses (the Gallery rent being the primary expense) with our annual income (which comes mostly from memberships).
ByLaws revision
A motion to revise the bylaws was passed at the April general meeting. The changes include adding more positions to the board
(president elect, corresponding secretary) as well as splitting the first vice president position into two positions: first vice president for
classes/guilds and program director. The program director will be responsible for the speakers at the monthly meetings. Also the
position of treasurer was added to the list of positions with a maximum term of two years. After serving in one position on the board for
two years, you can serve in another position, with total consecutive service on the board limited to six years.
