Dear ICYE exchangees,
We are looking forward to meet you soon and we are glad you decided to spend your
exchange time in Mexico!
In this booklet you will find a brief description of available social projects for the exchangeyear 11/12 in Mexico. We recommend you to read it thoroughly and to carefully fill in the
Priority List, which you find at the end of the booklet, with all possible information you can
give us.
Moreover, it is important that all exchangees coming to Mexico are aware of the following
points:
You can choose three different options of projects where you would like to work. Please
also look at the National Profile so you can be aware of the features of every region. We
will try to fulfill your preferences but it will depend on the availability of projects and
families in each region. If we can not place you in the project that you prefer, we will try
to offer to you a similar one.
Due to the visa procedure exchangees are expected to stay at the same project for at least
six months.
SIIJUVE gives exchangees the opportunity to change placement after the first six months
so they can have another kind of experience in the second part of their exchange period.
It can only be posible if there is a family and project available in the other region.
The projects described below are only some of the possible placements in Mexico and the
ones SIIJUVE has been working successfully over the last few years. However, we would
like you to know that we keep opening new projects in different states of the Mexican
Republic. Thus, you might be placed in one of these projects providing that they match
your project preferences and interests as shown in the priority list you will send us. We
ask you to please be flexible. If we cannot allocate you the project you request, we will
always be able to offer you a very similar one in another city.
Although in the past all exchangees stayed with Mexican host families, the situation is
changing and more and more exchangees live within the project facilities. Therefore,
please be prepared for this type of hosting situation.
Please remember to fill in the Priority List and to give it to your sending committee together
with a copy of your passport as soon as possible!

THEME OR AREAS OF PROJECT
To give children who have lost their parents or who are no
longer able to live with them a permanent home and a stable
environment, helping them to build their own future and to
be involved in the development of their communities
Aldea S.O.S. is a no profit, no governmental organization,
which principal aim is to create family for children who have
lost their parents, integrating them in a system where they
can have a normal life and a positive future.
AIMS OF THE PROJECT
Aldea Infantiles SOS was born in Europe after the Second
World War, in order to help many children who lost their
family. The first Aldea SOS was built in Austria in 1949 and
the first one in Mexico was build in 1971.
PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES
Aldea Infantiles SOS in Tuxtla Gutierrez is the first one in the
world who host children with disability.
In this case the aim of the project is also to help the children
in their psychological and physical recuperation.
The SOS Children's Village family-like structure is formed by
four basic principles: mother, brothers and sisters, house and
village.
Each child is given a so-called SOS mother. She is the main
person who cares for this child and is a substitute for the
child's natural parents. She lives in a house together with the
children that she is looking after. Together with them she
organizes the family's daily life. She creates strong and
dependable relationships and gives the children a safe and
loving home. The job of an SOS Children's Village Mother is
usually carried out by single women who have to complete an
extensive training programme. They are supported in their
highly responsible task by educational co-workers as well as
by women who are still training to be SOS Children's Village
mothers.
Girls and boys of differing ages grow up together in an SOS
Children's Village family like brothers and sisters. Natural
brothers and sisters are not separated. Children are accepted
from small babies until the age of ten unless there are
brothers and sisters involved, in which case the children
could be older.

The SOS Children's Village should be an open place which not
only promotes the integration of the SOS Children's Village
children into the local district but also supports interaction
and encounters with neighboring communities.
Special emphasis is placed on giving the children a thorough
preparation for life on their own afterwards. This is in order
that the children can be integrated into their local community
and opens job opportunities for them.
In Tuxtla Gutierrez the principal activities include physical and
psychological rehabilitation though different kind of therapy.
The aim of the activities is to improve the quality of the life of
the children, to stimulate their personal skills, in order to
improve their self confidence.
Beyond that there are also other types of facilities and aid
programmes whose main intention it is to improve living
conditions for families in the neighbourhood on a long-term
basis. The social centres, kindergartens, medical centres,
training centres and schools are not only used by children and
youths from the SOS Children's Village but are also there for
the general public.
