Weaving a Good Life at Walnut Knoll Farm
Alpacas, coffee come together for Canon breeders
Chickens and cows in Georgia far
outnumber the entire U.S. alpaca
population—there are only about 180,000
alpacas registered in North America—but a
Hart County couple thinks camelids and
their luxurious fiber can play an important
role in the state’s agriculture industry.
At Walnut Knoll Farm near Canon,
Judy and George Dick focus on breeding
their herd of 88 alpacas for their fiber.
“We would like people to see alpaca
farming as it should be seen—as an
agricultural effort to build another avenue
for economic growth here in the United
States,” says George, who is retired from
the faculty at the University of Georgia’s
Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
Walnut Knoll Farm recently joined
Georgia Grown as part of the Dicks’
strategy to broaden the perception of
alpacas as functional farm animals.
“We believe alpaca farming and the
production of a fiber with very unique and
special characteristics should be
recognized as part of Georgia’s wellrounded agricultural community,” says
George, adding that their Georgia Grown
membership will help them establish
connections with other Georgia farmers.
The Dicks first discovered alpacas when
Judy, a retired teacher, read an article about
them in the early 2000s. The couple located
a Georgia alpaca farm and paid a visit,
where they were charmed by the herdoriented animals who communicate by
humming.
In 2003 the Dicks bought their 72-acre
farm and went into the alpaca business,
Equine Facility Provides Therapy and Environment
For Healing the Wounds of Soldiers and their Families
“There is something about the outside
of a horse that is good for the inside of a
man.”
-Sir Winston Churchill.
Mike Randall found Churchill’s words
to be true in his own life and they were in
mind when he had the inspiration to
establish the Hopes and Dreams Riding
Facility in Quitman, Georgia. In his
younger years, Randall worked in
ranching. As a soldier returning home
from the war in Vietnam, he realized that
he suffered from post-traumatic stress
disorder. During that time he “went to
rodeoing,” and discovered that working
with horses aided in his recovery.
PTSD is an American Psychological
Association recognized condition resulting
from exposure to an extreme traumatic
stressor, such as military combat. Often
soldiers return home from combat duty and
turn to drugs, alcohol, or even suicide to
cope with or escape the memories of war.
Mike and his wife, Debra, have four sons,
three of which served in the military and,
upon their return home after serving in
Iraq, they recognized the changes in their
sons’ personality as symptoms of PSTD.
Randall had some horses on his land in
Brooks County, and he recalled how his
work with horses had helped him in his
recovery from PTSD. So he encouraged
his sons to start riding and training the
horses and caring for them. Seeing his
sons improve, Randall had the inspiration
to help other soldiers still suffering from
the effects of war and he established Hopes
and Dreams.
The Mission of Hopes and Dreams is to,
through the use of horse therapy,
camaraderie, and understanding, enable
veterans and their families to restore peace
to their lives and heal the battle wounds
that can’t be seen. Randall noted the
facility does not wish to interfere with or
replace existing organization-sanctioned
treatments. Rather, it provides a safe,
family environment for veterans to heal.
Since opening the facility in 2008, the
Randalls have helped more than 1,500

focusing at first on breeding, showing and
selling alpacas. Now that alpaca fiber, as
the animals’ hair is called, has become
more available and more popular with
weavers and knitters, the couple’s
emphasis has shifted to fiber.
To process the fiber from their Huacaya
and Suri breeds, the Dicks use a familyowned and -operated fiber mill, Fleury
Sheep and Wool LLC, in Clarkesville, Ga.
Huacayas are fluffy with fine, crimpy fiber;
the Suris have fiber that curls in a spiral to
form lustrous locks, almost like
dreadlocks.
The Dicks also have become serious
alpaca advocates, welcoming people
interested in breeding alpacas to their farm
by
appointment
for
agritourism
opportunities and education. The couple
often packs up an alpaca or two for
appearances at festivals around Georgia,
where they sell fiber, alpaca-fiber products
— and their own line of coffee under The
Alpaca Bean Coffee Company label. They
import green coffee for wholesale and
retail sales from the lands of the alpaca,
Peru and Bolivia.

Ag Dept. Regulates Ga. Pest Control Firms
The
Georgia
Department
of
Agriculture helps protect the state’s
consumers and environment through a
number of regulatory programs,
including inspections accomplished
through the Structural Pest Control
Section.
Upon request, inspections are made at
a homeowner’s house to ensure that
pesticides have been applied correctly for
wood destroying organisms such as
termites and to ensure that the standards
of treatment have been met.
“In helping to protect the environment
and health of Georgians, the Structural
Pest Control Section adheres to
appropriate and meaningful regulations
of the structural pest management
industry,” said Derrick Lastinger, director
of the Structural Pest Control Section.
And, among the responsibilities is the
regulation of pest control firms in the
state.
“The Georgia Department of
Agriculture regulates pesticide use and
sets the standards for the structural pest
management industry through training
and for examination requirement,” he
added.
Each structural pest control company
in Georgia must provide a certificate
verifying liability insurance coverage,
and have a designated certified operator
with proven competence in supervising
the application of pesticides.
Structural Pest Control licenses,
certifications and registrations are issued
for a two-year period at the beginning of
each odd-numbered year.
The Department licenses pesticide
contractors, restricted use pesticide
dealers, and commercial applicators in
the non-structural areas to promote
responsibility in pesticide application.
Before a license is issued, each
contractor must provide proof of financial
responsibility to cover damages that may

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Advertising Guidelines
Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market
Bulletin
must
relate
to
the
farming/agricultural industry or be a part
thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for
sale through the BULLETIN must meet at
least one of the following criteria:
1) must be produced by the advertiser on
his/her own farming operation,
2) must be made by the advertiser from
materials on his/her own farming operation,
3) must be owned and used by the
advertiser on his/her own farming operation
for a period of at least 90 days prior to
offering for sale through the BULLETIN.
Businesses, corporations, dealerships or
other commercial enterprises are not
allowed to place classified advertisements
in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is
defined as intended for mass market;
handling large quantities of product for
distribution (i.e., more than normal
household or farm quantities); supported by
advertisement (I.e., advertisement in
publications other than the BULLETIN;
listed as “business” in telephone directories
or “yellow pages”, etc.). Other indicators
include, but are not limited to, holding
business licenses and holding regulatory
licenses/permits/registrations.
Georgia residents only may advertise in the
Market Bulletin with the following exception:
out-of-state residents may advertise only in
the Out-of-State Wanted category.
The editor has the authority to designate the
length of ads and the number of ads that
may be placed by a family unit in any issue
of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1)
notice may be placed by any family unit in
any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit
refers to all individuals sharing the same
residence, address or telephone number.
Ads must be received no later than
designated deadline in order to appear in
the following issue. Ads submitted via our
website will be scheduled automatically for
the next available issue.
Ads will be published only once each time
submitted unless the advertiser specifies on
the notice that the ad is to be published
more than once. Ads may be published for
two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice
must be submitted if the advertiser wants
the advertisement to continue more than
two issues. Note: Some ad categories are
published infrequently and are published
only once per submission. Please check ad
category headings for publication frequency
prior to submitting notice.
There is a 20-word limit for advertisements
except as noted under category headings
(special categories that are published only
monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser’s name, town, phone
number or name and complete address
must be included within the word limit. The
Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit
notices.
Most advertisers include a telephone
number in their ads, but mailing address
may be published in lieu of phone number.
However, it is important that advertisers
provide a phone number when submitting
ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need
to contact them concerning their ads.
Advertisers who do not want a telephone
number printed in their ads should note this
fact when submitting the notice to the
Bulletin.
Each notice submitted for publication must
be in writing; ads cannot be taken by
telephone. Notices may be submitted by
U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the
Internet through the Market Bulletin website.
Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible,

Ga. 4-H Receives Grant
To Fund New Positions
Equine Facility
(Continued from Page 1)
veterans and their families by working with
Moody Air Force Base and the Green Leaf
Center in Valdosta, Fort Benning in
Columbus, and Fort Campbell in
Kentucky.
Participants have the opportunity to
spend time with horses at the level they feel
most comfortable, whether beginning
lessons, trail rides, or roping and barrel
racing. Hopes and Dreams provides
lodging facilities and activities including
boating, hunting and camping. Evening
campfires also are offered to encourage
camaraderie.
At Hopes and Dreams, therapeutic
horseback riding is used in treatment and
rehabilitation programs for patients with a
wide variety of illnesses and disabilities.
The excitement of riding stimulates the
rider, encourages him/her to talk, and
increases the rider’s interest in life.
“Combat’s a terrible thing,” Randall
said. “They need counselors, but these kids
don’t want to talk to them because they
(counselors) haven’t been in combat.” He
noted the soldiers realize they have a
problem although they may not want to
admit it. “When they get out there in the
middle of nowhere, they have that time to
reflect,” Randall said. “Then they can
begin to talk about it. They’ll talk to us
older vets because we’ve been there.”
Randall noted that here in our country,
many people take their freedom for
granted, and they just do not know the
sacrifices that our soldiers have made for
them.
Randall has travelled to
Washington, D.C. to gain support for
Equine Assisted Therapy to treat wounded
soldiers, including establishing rules for
setting up other facilities like Hopes and
Dreams. He is planning to go back to
Washington to meet with the Department
of Defense and the Surgeon General to
share the breakthroughs that have occurred
with his equine therapy program.
“Washington has just got to listen . . . and
provide a way for folks who want to help,”
he said.
“People don’t realize that the wives and
children are affected as much as the troops
are,” Randall explained. “There’s no
understanding there; they’ve been taught
‘this man’s not going to be the same when
he comes home’.”
Randall noted that his sons now are
doing well—two currently are in college
and one has a successful business.
“It’s amazing,” Randall said. “People
don’t realize what horses can do for you.”
Horses and dreams is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization with a completely
voluntary staff providing therapies free of

Mike Randall is shown with some of the horses at the Hopes and Dreams Riding
Facility that are used in treatment and rehabilitation programs. Through its use of
equine assisted therapy, Hopes and Dreams provides help to veterans suffering from
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as providing therapies for Traumatic Brain
Injury, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and stroke victims.
GPC Holds Open House,
Ribbon Cutting for New HQ
The Georgia Peanut Commission
(GPC) recently concluded its 50th
anniversary with an official ribbon cutting
ceremony and open house at its new
headquarters in Tifton. The new facility is
located off Interstate 75, Exit 63B.
“We are proud of the new energy
efficient headquarters and the opportunities
that exist to promote peanuts to millions of
consumers traveling through Georgia,”
said Donald Chase, GPC building
committee chairman and peanut farmer
from Oglethorpe, Ga.
The new headquarters, designed by
Cadmus Design-Build, will be the first netzero energy building for state government
in Georgia. Cadmus Design-Build provides
architectural design and construction
management in the master builder tradition
towards net-zero energy, environmental
sustainability and economic feasibility
goals.
During the ceremony Debbie Cannon
with U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ office
presented a U.S. flag flown over the U.S.
Capitol in honor of the GPC’s 50th
anniversary. U.S. Congressman Austin
Scott commended the GPC on an excellent
job and stated that he looks forward to
continuing to represent them in Congress.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary
Black presented Georgia Grown products
to the GPC and said that the GDA is having
a Georgia state flag flown over the State
Capitol in honor of the GPC.
“The commission is proud of the fact
that we have used local contractors and
businesses in the construction of the new
headquarters which has helped strengthen
the economy in the South Georgia area,”
said Armond Morris, GPC chairman and
peanut farmer from Ocilla, Ga. “The new
headquarters will assist the commission in
fulfilling its mission of educating
consumers and telling the peanut farmers’
story.”
“Not only does this building represent a
huge commitment and achievement from
Georgia’s peanut farmers, but it will serve
as an achievement for the entire peanut and
agricultural industry in Georgia,” Chase
added.

Q: Who inspects the food trucks that cook and serve meals? These have become
very popular in my neighborhood.
A: Food trucks that perform food service activities such as cooking and preparing
foods are inspected by your county health department. A truck that serves only
prepackaged items (e.g. canned soft drinks, wrapped ice cream products, prepackaged
sandwiches) would be inspected by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
***
Q: Is there one variety of watermelon known as the icebox watermelon? I have
seen different-looking ones called icebox melons recently.
A: “Icebox watermelon” is a term used to describe numerous varieties of watermelons
that are small enough to easily fit into a refrigerator. They are very popular. Larger
watermelons are sometimes called “picnic watermelons” and the smallest ones are
sometimes called “personal watermelons.” We grow all types in Georgia.
***
Q: Is it true that you can fry bell peppers?
A: Yes. In the Georgia Grown Test Kitchen we have used bell peppers to make fried
bell pepper rings along with Vidalia® onion rings. Place your bell pepper flat on its side
and slice it to create rings. Batter and deep-fry them as you would onion rings. You can
use bell peppers in the green or ripened stages.
You can also pan-fry or deep-fry other sweet and hot peppers. While Georgia Grown
peppers are in season, now is a good time to try a new recipe with them.

Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 218, Atlanta, GA 30334 or e-mail us at
[email protected]. Georgia 4-H will be adding 16 new
positions in some of the state’s most
impoverished counties because of a grant
from the Georgia Commission for Service
and Volunteerism.
Georgia 4-H received one of the highly
competitive 2012-2013 AmeriCorps State
& National Grants from the state
commission and the Corporation for
National and Community Service.
The 16 new, direct-service employees
will work in Appling, Banks, Bibb,
Clayton, Coffee, Crisp, Dougherty,
Decatur, Hart, Heard, Laurens, Putnam,
Troup, Tift, Union and Washington
counties. They will assist University of
Georgia Cooperative Extension agents in
delivering youth programs.
AmeriCorps grants focus on six key
service areas: disaster services, economic
opportunity, education, environmental
stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans
and military families.
“With the reduction in state and federal
funding for Extension 4-H programs, we
have to look for other ways to supplement
funding for county 4-H programs across
the state,” said Georgia 4-H State Leader
Arch Smith. “These AmeriCorps workers
provided through grant funding will help
county Extension 4-H offices reach more
young people and give more children the
positive educational youth development
opportunities offered by Georgia 4-H.”
For more information on Georgia 4-H’s
AmeriCorps grant, contact Jeff Buckley at
[email protected] or (706) 542-8735.

Other recent USDA measures to
provide assistance to producers impacted
by the drought include:
* allowing additional acres under
CRP to be used for emergency haying or
grazing; the action allows lands that are
not yet classified as “under severe
drought” but that are “abnormally dry” to
be used for haying and grazing.
* authorizing haying and grazing of
Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP)
easement areas in drought-affected areas
where haying and grazing is consistent
with conservation of wildlife habitat and
wetlands.; USDA has expedited its
authorization process for this haying and
grazing.
* reducing the emergency loan
interest rate from 3.75 percent to 2.25
percent
* lowering the reduction in the annual
rental payment to producers on CRP acres
used for emergency haying or grazing from
25 percent to 10 percent in 2012
In addition, USDA announced crop
insurance companies have agreed to
provide a short grace period for farmers
on unpaid insurance premiums in 2012.

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads
in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market
Bulletin must have had a negative
Coggins test within past 12 months.
Negative reports are valid for 12
months from the sample date. A copy
of this test report must accompany
the ad each time it is submitted or the
notice will be returned to the
advertiser.
For
this
reason,
generalized ads (i.e., many horses,
varieties to choose from, others, etc.)
cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged
to request verification of a negative
Coggins test before purchasing any
equine. Any falsification of Coggins
tests can result in fines and/or
suspension of advertising privileges
in the Market Bulletin. This regulation
also applies to equine advertised in
the "At Stud" and "Boarding"
categories of the quarterly equine
editions.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
More Ga. Counties Receive
USDA Disaster Designation
Six Georgia counties were designated
by USDA as primary natural disaster
areas August 1 due to damages and losses
caused by drought. Cherokee, Cobb,
Haralson, Paulding and Polk counties
were included in a previous designation
as contiguous counties, but were
upgraded to primary counties in the new
designation. Bartow County also was
included as a primary disaster county,
bringing the total number of primary
disaster counties in Georgia at press time
to 138.
A secretarial disaster designation
allows farm operators in both primary
and contiguous counties to apply for
assistance from the Farm Service Agency,
provided that eligibility requirements are
met. This assistance includes FSA
emergency loans. Farmers in eligible
counties have eight months from the date
of a secretarial disaster declaration to
apply for this loan assistance. FSA
considers each emergency loan
application independently, taking into
account the extent of production losses,
security available, and repayment ability.
On August 8 USDA announced that its
Natural Resources Conservation Service
will use $16 million in existing funds
from its Wildlife Habitat Incentive
Program and Environmental Quality
Incentives Program to target states,
including
Georgia,
experiencing
exceptional and extreme drought. NRCS
state conservationists will announce
special signups for WHIP and EQIP funds
which will allow eligible producers to
apply for selected conservation practices.
These practices include prescribed
grazing, livestock watering facilities and
water conservation practices. Eligible
producers also can re-apply for financial
assistance to re-install or re-apply failed
conservation practices due to drought and
modify existing contracts to re-schedule
planned conservation practices.
In addition, USDA’s Farm Service
Agency will transfer $14 million in
unobligated program funds into the
Emergency Conservation Program. ECP
provides emergency funding and
technical assistance for farmers and
ranchers to rehabilitate farmland
damaged by natural disasters and for
carrying
out
emergency
water
conservation measures in periods of
severe drought. ECP also provides
resources to help producers restore
livestock fences.

Don’t Let Bees, Wasps Spoil the Hot Months
While having fun during the hot
months, experts warn to watch out for
stingers.
“While many bee pollinators are active
only in early spring, honeybees and
bumblebees are active all summer,” said
Keith Delaplane, a University of Georgia
Extension entomologist.
In Georgia, wasps are more likely to
sting you than bees, he said.
“Most people call any stinging insect a
bee,” Delaplane added. “True bees are
valuable pollinators and rarely warrant
control. A live-and-let-live approach is far
better.”
Wasps and yellow jackets are different
because they become more numerous
toward the end of the summer.
The best control for wasps is to treat
individual nests with a commercial wasp
spray — the earlier in the summer the
better. Yellow jackets nest underground
and should be treated with a dust formula
insecticide sprinkled on the entrance of the
nest at night, when they are all in the nest.
If you encounter bees on flowers, just
leave them alone and enjoy watching them.
If you see a bumblebee nest, avoid it, and it
will die out in the fall. And, don’t swat at
insects, he said.
In spite of folk tales, most stinging
insects are equally potent.
“It depends more on the individual
human than on the bee,” said Delaplane.
“For some beekeepers, honeybee stings are
practically nothing, but for those same
people, a wasp sting can be very painful.”
Some people may have severe reactions
to any bee and wasp stings.
“If you swell and feel pain at a sting site,

Walnut Knoll Farm
(Continued from Page 1)
“Coffee was a natural outgrowth of our
business,” says George, who learned coffee
roasting from a friend, who owns an
Athens coffee shop. “We roast the coffee
right here on the farm and originally
packaged it with pictures of our alpacas on
the labels.”
Today, the Alpaca Bean offers seven
roasts—four single roasts and three blends.
The couple donates 20 percent of net
profits from coffee sales to alpaca research.
The Dicks will join other alpaca farms
across Georgia and the United States by
opening their Walnut Knoll Farm to
visitors on National Alpaca Farm Days,
which will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, Sept. 29-30, 2012.

it’s not an allergic reaction, it’s a normal
reaction,” he said. “An allergic reaction
includes sweating, dizziness, lightheadedness, shaking, convulsions and
more serious symptoms — reactions
suffered by a very small fraction of the
population.”
If you are allergic to bee or wasp stings,
carry a sting kit at all times. Most other
stings can be treated with a topical
ointment.
Another stinger to avoid during the
summer is that of the fire ant, whose sting
burns for a few minutes, then starts itching.
Behavior is the key to telling a fire ant
apart from other ants.
“If you see a large, turtle-shaped mound
with no obvious entry point and when you
disturb the mound, hundreds of ants
respond very quickly, you can be sure
they’re fire ants,” said UGA entomologist
Beverly Sparks.
If fire ants sting you, treat the area with
an approved insect-sting remedy that not
only deadens pain, but provides infection
protection.
“Some people react severely to fire ant
stings,” Sparks said. “They should see a
physician immediately.”
Allergic reactions to fire ant stings may
include difficulty breathing, nausea or
lapsing into unconsciousness.

GFA Presents Awards
To Forestry Recipients
The Georgia Forestry Association
(GFA) recently presented several awards to
Georgians at its 2012 annual conference in
Savannah.
The following awards were handed out:
Wise Owl Award for years of continuous
service and dedication to the forestry
industry: former state forester John Mixon;
Tree Farmer of the Year: Dr. John Bembry;
Georgia Logger of the Year: Boyce
Rutherford of Rutherford Timber
Harvesting LLC; and Evergreen award:
Georgia Forestry Commission.
Mixon served as director of the Georgia
Forestry Commission from 1983-95, and
also was the 69th president of the National
Association of State Foresters in 1991. In
1986, Mixon’s reforestation campaign set a
world record in the forestry community by
planting more than 650,000 trees in one
year, according to the GFA.
Bembry was honored by the Georgia
Tree Farm Program, an affiliate of the
American Tree Farm System for
establishing Bembry Mill Tree Farm as an
example of sustainable forestry promoting
sound land ethics. The 2,100-acre Bembry
Mill Tree Farm has been a certified Tree
Farm since 1985 and is jointly owned by
Dr. Hembry and his sister, Amy Finleyson.
According to the GFA, Rutherford’s
operation not only met, but exceeded all
criteria for Logger of the Year; nominees
are judged on their ability to be compliant
with all applicable laws, practice safety and
loss control programs, establish and
maintain equipment security practices, and
use sound business management.
Rutherford’s participation in the Master
Timber Harvester Program was a key
factor in his selection.

The Director of the Georgia
Environmental Protection Division has
announced that consideration of new
applications for agricultural water
withdrawal permits in a 24county area of
southwest Georgia will be suspended. The
suspension took effect July 30, but does not
apply to applications EPD already had
received as of that date.
This
suspension
affects
both
agricultural groundwater and surface water
withdrawals in the lower Flint and
Chattahoochee River basins in a region
known as Subarea 4, which includes all or
part of the following 17 counties: Baker,
Calhoun, Colquitt, Crisp, Decatur, Dooly,
Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller,
Mitchell, Seminole, Sumter, Terrell, Turner
and Worth. In addition, agricultural surface
water withdrawal applications for parts of
Calhoun, Chattahoochee, Clay, Early,
Marion, Randolph, Schley, Stewart,
Sumter, Terrell and Webster counties in
areas outside of Subarea 4 will not be
considered.
“The water resources affected by the
suspension are a significant source of water
for irrigation,” said EPD Director Jud
Turner. “A continued increase in
withdrawals from these resources may
ultimately lead to unacceptable impacts to
existing users or compromise the
sustainable capacities of these resources.”
The suspension applies to new
applications for groundwater withdrawal
from the Floridian aquifer, as well as
applications for surface water pumping
from streams and rivers in the Spring
Creek,
Ichawaynochaway
Creek,
KinchafooneeMuckalee Creek, and Lower
Flint river sub basins in the Flint River
Basin. In addition, the suspension applies
to applications to modify existing permits
to increase withdrawals or increase the
number of irrigated acres.
“This suspension will give us time to
update the mathematical models used to
assess water resources in the area and to
evaluate the impact of increased
withdrawals,” said EPD Director Turner.
“The suspension will be reevaluated
annually beginning in November 2013.”
The suspension does not apply to permit
applications from other areas of the lower
Flint and Chattahoochee River basins. For
more information contact the EPD
Agricultural Permitting Office in Tifton at
229-391-2400.
