2015 ANNUAL REPORT
ABOUT GRADY
Sitting in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Grady Health System
leads the way as the Southeast’s most essential healthcare provider.
We’ve been an innovator since opening our doors in 1892, and providing
cutting-edge care to all patients who need us continues to be our
mission to this very day. Our singular objective is to become the
nation’s finest public academic healthcare system. We know we
can only deliver against that objective by providing outstanding,
personalized care – one patient at a time – to every person we are
honored to serve.
Every day, Grady is there to help Atlanta heal.
From primary care services to pioneering stroke
treatment to the state’s only adult and pediatric
burn center, you can count on Grady to make
Atlanta and the surrounding region healthier.

Willie Wisdom was driving his grandchild to
the bus when he started having seizures.
Rushed to Grady, he suffered a massive heart
attack. Rapid intervention by Dr. Michael
McDaniel and the cardiac team saved his life.
Now, with several stents and a defibrillator,
Willie is back enjoying life — and his five
grandchildren. “I call Dr. McDaniel my
guardian angel.”

E ffective treatment of heart attack
is all about speed. With our new
expanded capabilities Grady is now
on par with any hospital in the region.
Success requires a dedicated team —
nurses, EMTs and physicians — and our
team is a great one.

A former singer and actress born nearly
94 years ago in Bogota, Colombia, Carolina
Molano has seen a lot. But when it comes to
dedicated medical care, nothing compares
to her physician, Dr. Iris Castro-Revoredo,
an internal medicine specialist at Grady.
Ms. Molano has been a Grady patient for
over a decade. “All the doctors there have
been wonderful, and Dr. Castro is so caring.
She communicates with my cardiologist,
calls to check on me regularly, and tells me
to call her whenever I need something. They
are so well-organized and I never have to
wait. That’s why I love Grady so very much.”

Delivering personalized care that
meets the individual needs of each
patient requires a staff with a real
passion for service. The doctors,
nurses and staff in the Primary Care
Centers go the extra mile every day,
applying their medical, administrative
and language skills to develop cultural
understanding that guides the care of
our diverse patient population.

After Chrystal Davis suffered five late-term
miscarriages under the care of other hospitals,
her 20-year dream of becoming a mother
looked out of reach. Then she turned to
Grady and Dr. Franklyn Geary, Morehouse
Chief of Service, Grady Women’s Center.
He’s an expert in complex, high-risk
pregnancies, and his care made all the
difference. “Dr. Geary’s personality is
amazing. He is kind, patient and reassuring
and kept telling me, ‘We’re going to have
this baby.’ I came to Grady for my miracle —
and I got it.”

On Dec. 18, 2015, a jog and pub crawl with
friends nearly ended in tragedy when
Homer Bartlett fell to the floor and went
into cardiac arrest. Atlanta Fire Rescue
responded within minutes and used an
AED to restore his heart rhythm. They were
quickly joined by Grady paramedics with
specialized cardiac training. The quick actions
saved Homer’s life. After seven stents and
cardiac rehab, today Homer is back to riding
his bike to work, playing soccer and even
enjoying a beer with friends.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT
& CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER,
JOHN HAUPERT

Grady Health System
Grady is seeing growth every day as we continue to look for
innovative and cutting-edge medicine to keep Atlanta healthier.
There is new energy at Grady.
New Patients: New Opportunities
Walk the halls on any given day and you will see that we have added more
medical staff, expanded our services and improved the facilities. Today, Grady
clinicians have access to leading technology that is available in only a handful
of other institutions around the world.
But let me be clear, these patients are more than numbers on a spreadsheet to
us. They are votes of confidence by the region’s patients and physicians. Each
patient who seeks treatment here trusts Grady will provide the best medical
care available — a standard of care that few other institutions can aspire to.
This has made Grady a magnet for some of the nation’s top medical
professionals, who are attracted by our mission of serving the community’s
unmet medical needs and by the fact that some of our clinics are reinventing
the way medicine is practiced every day in order to achieve better patient
outcomes more safely.
These new patients confirm the correctness of our investments and
improvements. They also demonstrate a renewed faith in the quality of our
care and the superiority of our staff.
The change is also making Grady the medical institution of choice for a
growing number of patients.
Caring for New Patients
Last year, patient volumes in our Burn Center increased by 45 percent, the
Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience center treated 22 percent more patients,
we performed 15 percent more cardiac catheterizations, orthopedic volumes
grew by 14 percent and our outpatient specialty centers experienced a volume
increase of 15 percent. This growth is unprecedented in Grady’s history.
We’re seeing more first-time patients for two reasons. First, physicians at more
than 80 hospitals across the region routinely refer their patients to us who are
beyond their own medical capabilities, confident that Grady can care for them.
Second, more Atlanta area patients from all walks of life and socioeconomic
backgrounds are entrusting their health to Grady.
At a time when government reimbursement is uncertain, the growing diversity
of Grady’s payor mix is critically important. It means that Grady generates
revenues from Medicare, private insurers and other sources, ensuring that we
have the financial stability needed to continue our mission to care for
underserved populations.
What makes Grady unique is that our medical staff — comprised of working
physicians on the faculties of Emory and Morehouse schools of medicine —
provide every patient with the best care available. Each and every day.
Regardless of wealth.
Their passion to push the boundaries of medicine continually drives us to
achieve greater excellence, improved efficiency and superior outcomes. And
we believe this drive complements our traditional mission of being Atlanta’s
safety-net hospital.
A Year of Accomplishment, Recognition
That progress extended to all corners of our institution:
• Grady’s cardiac care team is saving more lives thanks to our expansion of
STEMI (ST elevation myocardial infarction) services. The expansion allows
us to provide round-the-clock care for patients experiencing heart attacks
caused by arterial blockages.
• We built our new $76 million emergency center, which will accommodate
growing patient demand that overwhelmed Grady’s older emergency
department. Last year, the department served over 123,000 patients, a
number expected to grow to 135,000 in coming years. The new facilities are
already enabling us to treat more patients more quickly and improved doorto-doctor time by 48 percent, and we intend further improvement.
2015 Annual Report
11
• We began the renovation and expansion of the Women’s Center, a threephase, $36 million project to improve the patient experience. The initial
work will build new labor and delivery suites for family-centered care.
• Grady earned important recognitions and awards. We were named one of
only four Baby-Friendly Designated facilities in Georgia, which means we
provide optimal care and education for breastfeeding mothers and their
babies. We were presented the Mission: Lifeline® Silver Receiving Quality
Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement
measures for the treatment of severe heart attack patients, the Georgia
Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry (GCASR) hospital Star Award for improving
outcomes for stroke patients, and the Quality and Patient Safety Award
from The Partnership for Health and Accountability for an initiative that
reduced the incidence of patient falls.
New Leadership to Help Us Blaze Trails
These and Grady’s other accomplishments were achieved through the
commitment and dedication of our staff and leadership team. And in 2015
we enhanced that leadership with the addition of Dr. Robert Jansen as chief
medical officer and chief of staff.
Jansen, formerly chief administrative medical officer of WellStar Health
System, the largest health system in metro Atlanta, is an experienced and
highly-regarded physician and healthcare administrator. He will lead clinical
and quality efforts to continue Grady’s progress and spearhead ongoing
collaboration with our academic partners to take the quality of care and the
prominence of clinical care to the next level.
Our management team was also strengthened by combining the
responsibilities of chief operating officer and chief nursing officer into a
single position that is effectively filled by Dr. Rhonda Scott, who has
executed initiatives to improve nursing, patient and physician satisfaction
and to enhance nurse recruitment and retention.
During the last several years our board of directors has taken the lead in
charting Grady’s course toward financial stability and increased academic
and medical quality. No one has been more influential in that effort than
Pete Correll, who now concludes his service as board chairman and whose
contributions to Grady’s progress are immeasurable.
We are fortunate that a respected community and business leader, Frank Blake,
will succeed Pete as chairman.

few other institutions can aspire to.
The Journey to Continuous Improvement
As I said earlier, Grady has been transformed during the past decade.
Though there is uncertainty about continued federal and state governmental
support for the uninsured, we are financially stable, thanks to our embrace of
financial discipline and the diversification of our payor base.
We now continue the journey to distinguish Grady as a quality leader, an
academic leader and an employer of choice. We have made progress in quality
metrics, but much remains to be done. The mission is made more challenging
by the fact that many of our patients often lack the resources and support
systems to sustain their own recoveries after being discharged from Grady.
Similarly, our patient satisfaction scores have improved dramatically since
2008, and we are among the leaders in patient satisfaction among large,
public, safety net health systems. However, again, we are committed to further
improving our scores.
I am excited about the steady progress Grady is making in its ascent to greater
national prominence, in the groundbreaking levels of performance we achieve
every day and in the medical breakthroughs we are helping to develop. These
are accomplishments never before achieved by a large, safety-net hospital.
They are the product of collaboration between Grady’s executive leadership,
our board, thousands of dedicated physicians, nurses, medical professionals
and staff and the generosity of donors and volunteers. I am grateful for their
contributions, and for their continued efforts to build upon Grady’s success.
Sincerely,

DELIVERING OUR GROWTH AGENDA:
More Patients, Procedures and Specialists
In 2015, Grady’s growth trajectory reached new heights as we recorded significant increases across a wide range of inpatient and
outpatient services. Among the drivers of growth: investments in expanded care for cardiac patients, tripling the number of burn
surgeons on staff and the growing reputation of the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center. Today, more metro Atlantans are
aware of Grady’s unique services and more physicians are referring their patients to Grady for specialized care.

GROWING THE RIGHT WAY
A.D. Pete Correll
I’ve lived through a fair amount of history, but very little compares to the sheer
drama of Grady’s accomplishments during the past decade.
This hospital has been transformed from an institution on the brink of financial
ruin to a thriving public academic medical center. In the past year alone, Grady
has invested millions of dollars in new facilities, new technology and new staff.
Once viewed as a hospital of last resort for Atlanta, Grady is now seen as a
medical institution of choice for a growing number of people.
Many have been instrumental in this transformation. The Grady staff and
physicians provided critical support, encouragement and dedication. Their
missionary-like zeal, combined with some of the nation’s best medical skills,
has consistently delivered quality patient care. Our administrative leaders have
instilled financial and professional discipline and a unifying vision. Our volunteer
board of directors has provided the encouragement and counsel to help guide
progress. Generous donors have made possible unparalleled investment in new
technology, facilities and service lines. And the community has been unflagging
in its continued support.
I am proud to have played a role in Grady’s transformation. But it is time for
me to conclude my service as chairman of the Grady Memorial Hospital
Corporation and pass the baton to a new leader, Frank Blake.
Frank, the retired chairman and CEO of The Home Depot, joined the board last
year. Since then, he has repeatedly demonstrated his appreciation for Grady
and its unique mission. His strong background in management and the law and
his extensive experience in public-sector leadership will be tremendous assets
to this institution and its stakeholders.
At Grady, his mission as chairman will in some ways be clearer: Continue to
focus the institution’s resources on becoming the nation’s best public academic
medical center.
In coming years, Grady will be challenged to manage its ongoing growth and
the changes imposed by a rapidly-evolving healthcare landscape. Those are the
healthy challenges that confront every thriving institution.
I am confident the board will continue to play a central role in shaping strategy,
establishing priorities and ensuring that the perspectives of a broad range of
community stakeholders are heard. Its mission will continue to be to provide
consistent and effective governance. But the most important objective for the
board, and everyone else at Grady, will be to look to the future.
Grady’s team of talented individuals will continue to improve our quality of care,
patient satisfaction and employee engagement. But we must all redouble our
efforts to share reports of Grady’s continuing progress with the people of our
region and its business and political leaders. Ultimately, this institution can only
succeed if its ongoing progress is widely recognized.
Grady is well positioned to manage its growth in the right way and to further
enhance its value to the patients it serves directly and the community whose
healthcare is improved by the hospital’s very presence. I’m extremely gratified
to have helped to write the last chapter of Grady’s story. And I look forward to
reading the next chapter in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Pete Correll
Frank has made a career of building consensus to empower progress. During
nearly two decades working with the federal government, he found ways to
knit together teams of rivals to achieve common goals. He did the same as
chairman of The Home Depot, steering the company through turbulent times
to restore its stock performance.

To Our 2015 Donors,
Grady would not be the thriving health system it is today without the support of private donors like you
who choose each year to invest in our future. Thanks to the support of over 1,350 of you in 2015, the
Grady Health Foundation raised nearly $11.5 million that will go toward capital projects, new programs
and continued improvement.
Major gifts received from corporate and philanthropic partners including AstraZeneca, the James M. Cox
Foundation, The Home Depot, the O. Wayne Rollins Foundation and the Zeist Foundation will allow Grady
to renovate the Women’s Center, create a new community-based cardiac program and enhance emergency
training facilities.
In addition to our efforts to secure financial contributions, the Grady Health Foundation is actively working
to build community support and raise awareness of Grady’s increasingly critical role in metro Atlanta’s
future. The new Grady Ambassador Force, introduced in the fall of 2015 through the engagement of
Leadership Atlanta, is composed of nearly 100 civic, business and faith-based leaders from throughout the
region — all of whom believe in our mission and are excited to play a role in sustaining Grady’s success.
We are grateful for each and every one of the individuals and organizations listed that made the choice to
invest in Grady this past year. We also hope you will join us in thanking the Grady Health Foundation Board
of Directors for their leadership and commitment.
