T
he 2008 fiscal year was my third, and
final, year as president of the Shaker
Schools Foundation. And what a time it
was! We experienced tremendous growth
and success as a Foundation, thanks
in large part to the many faithful and
generous donors who believe in the value
of a Shaker public school education.
The Shaker Schools Foundation
exists to provide resources to enrich the
educational experiences of students in the
Shaker Heights City Schools. From July
2007 through June 2008, we directed
much of our energy to the Auditorium
Campaign to renovate and restore the
large auditorium at Shaker Heights High
School.
Three very special events and the
completion of the project on time and on
budget are the highlights of this period.
I hope you enjoy reading the details of
our efforts in this Annual Report. By
June 2008, the total raised for the large
auditorium project was $1,125,000. As
of this writing, we are within $10,000 of
our $1.2 million goal!
During 2008, our donors also
helped us to fulfill our mission through
grants to 31 teachers for language,
math, and music enrichment programs
at our elementary schools; support for

the Minority Achievement Committee’s
programs at the High School; and
awards to recognize the academic and
extra-curricular accomplishments of 45
students.
The Foundation also continued its
quarterly newsletter, outreach to Shaker
graduates, commitment to raising funds
to cover operating expenses, and oversight
of more than 70 named endowment
funds. Looking to the future, the board
endorsed a campaign to increase our
permanent, unrestricted endowment, so
that the Shaker Schools Foundation can
continue to support the extraordinary
faculty and students in the Shaker
Heights City Schools.
I remain extremely grateful to each
member of our board and staff, as well as
to the administration and School Board.
It has been a real pleasure to collaborate
with all of these individuals over the past
three years.
Serving as president has been a true
honor, and I cherish the experiences
of working so closely with so many
members of our community. Thank you
again for making possible the Shaker
Schools Foundation’s ongoing service to
the Shaker Schools.

Auditorium
Campaign
T
he Auditorium Campaign continued
to focus the activities of the Shaker
Schools Foundation during 2008.
The Foundation partnered with the
Shaker Heights City School District to
fund the $2.4 million renovation and
restoration of the High School’s large

auditorium. Challenge grants from the
Ratner Family and the Jonathan Lewis
Foundation enhanced the Shaker Schools
Foundation’s effort to raise $1.2 million.
By the end of the 2008 fiscal year,
generous donors had contributed more
than $1.12 million toward the goal.
The need for the project was
significant, considering that the large
auditorium opened in 1931 and that
its most recent update was in 1987. The distinguished architectural firm
of Hubbell & Benes designed Shaker
Heights High School. Hubbell & Benes
had been influential in the development
of University Circle and was known for
classical revival buildings, one of the
most splendid of which is the Cleveland
Museum of Art. Their other prominent
buildings include the West Side Market,
Masonic Auditorium, St. Luke’s Hospital,
and Ohio Bell Telephone Company. It
is not surprising that the Shaker Heights
City Schools wanted one of the area’s
most prominent architects involved in
such a major undertaking as the design
of the new high school. Similarly,
when it came time to renovate the large
auditorium, the District selected City
Architecture because of its expertise in
restoring historic buildings.
Work began on the large auditorium
in late May 2007, with the removal of
all the seats, because the project specified
that they would be refurbished rather
than replaced. Next, the chandeliers
were lowered, detached, and sent away
for repair and restoration. Scaffolding
went up so that repair and painting
of the ceiling and upper walls could
proceed, along with the installation of
new mechanical systems. A palette of six
colors, based on historic examples from
the 1930s, was used to paint the surfaces. Construction proceeded throughout
the summer and fall, after which the
repaired seats and chandeliers and new
carpeting, rigging, and curtain were
installed. The new sound and lighting
systems and the stage extensions were
the final pieces in the large auditorium’s
complete restoration and renovation.
Three special events occurred in
conjunction with the Large Auditorium
Project. On October 5, 2007, a benefit
concert raised $36,000 for the campaign.
Shaker graduates Jim Brickman (1979)
and Anne Cochran (1977) donated their
services for a wonderful performance,
After All These Years. The Shaker
Schools Foundation is also pleased to
acknowledge Great Lakes Publishing
Company; Kara Consulting; Pearl of
the Orient; Squire, Sanders & Dempsey
L.L.P.; and U.S.A. Insulation for
sponsoring the event.
Auditorium Campaign donors
were the first group invited to view the
renovated large auditorium, on January
17, 2008. Their evening included a
recitation of Shakespeare’s All the World’s
A Stage and several vocal performances
by High School students, as well as the
ceremony to name spaces in the large
auditorium. The Foundation thanks
Regency Construction Company for
sponsoring this event.
On February 2, the public was
invited to celebrate the reopening,
and the evening was glorious. After
representatives of the Foundation and
District participated in the ribbon
cutting, an array of student performances
brought the large auditorium to life.
Three hundred students filled the space
with their presence, their voices, and
the sounds of their instruments as the
Junior, Advanced, and Senior Acting
Ensembles; Symphonic Orchestra; Shaker
Wind Ensemble; and A Cappella Choirs
performed. By the end of the evening, an
additional 300 audience members joined
the students in singing the Shaker Alma
Mater. City Architecture and Karpinski
Engineering sponsored this memorable
reopening ceremony.
Once again, the large auditorium at
Shaker Heights High School is used every
school day for classes, and many evenings
for rehearsals and meetings. And once
again, the large auditorium reflects
and supports the excellence of Shaker’s
talented students who work, rehearse, and
perform there. The Shaker Heights City
Schools and Shaker Schools Foundation
extend sincere thanks to the nearly
500 donors who made this successful
undertaking possible.

2008 Annual Report
Shaker Schools Foundation
*deceased
The Shaker Schools
Foundation is also
grateful to donors who
annually contribute
gifts of up to $35 in
support of the Shaker
Heights City Schools.
Enrichment Grants
Annual proceeds from many of the
Shaker Schools Foundation’s endowed
funds support teacher grants that enrich
the education of Shaker’s students.
During 2008, the Foundation provided
nearly $12,500 in 22 enrichment grants
to 31 teachers. Sample grants in each
building include:
• Language enrichment activities
for students and parents at
Boulevard Elementary School;
• Math enrichment programs at
Fernway Elementary School;
• New document cameras for use
in three-dimensional learning at
Lomond Elementary School;
• New digital recorders for
reading intervention at Onaway
Elementary School;
• Purchase of drums and other
instruments to begin a music
enrichment program at
Woodbury Elementary School
to teach students discipline and
respect through music;
• An all-school assembly to
reinforce the lifelong benefits of
hobbies such as chess at Shaker
Middle School; and
• Materials to improve reading
motivation in struggling learners;
to enhance oral communication
skills for foreign language
students; and to support
journalism students at Shaker
Heights High School.
In addition, the Shaker Schools
Foundation received grants from
the Harry K. Fox and Emma R.
Fox Charitable Foundation and Key
Foundation to support the activities
of the MAC Scholars Program at the
High School. Special project funding of
nearly $6,000 was available to support
libraries throughout the district, as well as
instrumental music at the High School,
special education at Onaway, and various
summer camp programs.

fulfill the mission of the Shaker Schools
Foundation by supporting programs that
enrich curricula, encourage and celebrate

A Night for the
Red & White
The Friends of the Shaker Schools
Foundation presented the sixteenth
A Night for the Red & White on March 8,
2008. The event happened to coincide
with the “North American blizzard of
2008” that dumped up to two feet of
snow on the east side, closed the airport,
and cancelled many area activities and
events. However, as the snow tapered on
Saturday, stalwart Shaker families cleaned
out their driveways, and many hundreds
arrived at the InterContinental Hotel for a
wonderful party! Despite the weather, the
2008 A Night for the Red & White raised
$106,000 to enhance technology, the
arts, humanities, and health and fitness in
each of the Shaker Heights City Schools.
Many thanks and congratulations to the
volunteers who spent countless hours
planning the 2008 event – and to the
community for its dedicated and stormworthy support.
