This weekend has the JCCC packed with the richness and exciting diversity of many Asian cultures. Kobayashi Hall will feature an exotic variety of dance, theatrical and music performances on the main stage. As well, there will be a cultural marketplace featuring arts and crafts demonstrations and merchandise from all across the Asian region. If martial arts are what you want, the dojo’s will feature virtually nonstop demonstrations. Finally, a visit to The Road to Asia Festival is not complete unless you sample some of the delicacies featured in our food court. The Road to Asia Festival takes the JCCC’s motto of “Friendship Through Culture” to a whole new level. With last year’s participants representing countries like Pakistan, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Myanmar, India, Taiwan, and, of course, Japan, and over 3,000 people in attendance, you don’t want to miss this huge two-day festival of Asian Canadian culture. Gather your family and friends and join us for another exciting trip along The Road to Asia. Date: Saturday November 7 & Sunday November 8, 2009 Time: 11:00am to 5:00pm daily Admission: JCCC Members Free, $5 Adults, $3 Seniors/Students, Children 12 and under FREE nikkeiFLIX: Obaachan's Garden by Mel Tsuji The next presentation for the nikkeiFLIX film series on Thursday November 12, 2009 will be “Obaachan’s Garden,” a moving portrait of her grandmother by Sansei film-maker, Linda Ohama. The film, scheduled for a 7:00pm start at the JCCC, should be a revealing experience for most Nikkei because Ohama succeeded in getting her grandmother to reveal memories, emotions and experiences of her past her family never knew. Ohama discovers a painful, buried past, peeling back layers of her grandmother’s life, especially from the time she arrived in Canada as a picture bride in 1923. This showing will conclude the nikkeiFLIX film series of Japanese Canadian and Japanese American films and documentaries for this year. Last month, a special appearance by Nikkei film-maker, Ken Galloway, showcased a night of young, JC film-makers and their work. They included work by Jeff Chiba Stearns of Vancouver, Galloway, and Japanese American film-maker Tad Nakamura. The nikkeiFLIX film series is co-sponsored by the JCCC Heritage Committee and the Nikkei Voice. Yoga class is back! JCCC is offering a new Yoga class this fall. Yoga is an excellent form of exercise and it helps in releasing stress, improving flexibility, and promoting vitality from the inside out. You will be able to enjoy a rejuvenating and relaxing time featuring a new instructor. The new schedule is on a monthly basis, Wednesdays in October and November for this fall. Minimum of 5 registerants are required to start a class. Bring your own yoga mat and join us. Day: Wednesdays Fee: $40 (plus GST) per month Time: 5:30pm to 7:00pm Drop in class: $15 plus GST All participants are required to be JCCC members and to sign Martial Art/Yoga Waiver Form at the reception desk. Kyogen at the Kobayashi Hall The JCCC is pleased to announce that the Yamamoto Kyogen Company is performing at the JCCC Kobayashi Hall in March 2010. Kyogen, the Japanese classical comic theatre like noh (which many people enjoyed its stage at the JCCC in Fall 2008), originated from sarugaku. Sarugaku developed in the early 14th century, when acting troupes in a variety of centuries-old theatrical traditions were touring and performing at temples, shrines and festivals, often with the patronage of the nobility. While noh is musical in nature, kyogen is comic theater. The comedy and laughter invoked by kyogen are meant to celebrate humanity. More detailed information about this up-coming performance will be in the JCCC Newsletter December 09/January10 issue. Ticket sales are expected to start in January 2010. 3 Kuroi Ame: Black Rain Celebrating the Re-release of one of Japanese Cinema’s Greatest Masterpieces Kuroi Ame is one of two-time winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d'Or Shohei Imamura’s most celebrated works. It is a devastating cinematic masterpiece that received 25 awards, including two Cannes Film Festival awards and the Best Film Award at the Japanese Academy Awards. The title refers to the radioactive fallout which descended upon the ruined city of Hiroshima after the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Young bride-to-be Yoshiko Tanaka has the misfortune to be visiting Hiroshima on the day of the explosion. Incredibly, she is unhurt; she returns to her own village, across the bay from Hiroshima. Unfortunately, her townsmen have been profoundly affected by the “black rain”; over the next five years, the poison in their systems slowly but surely erodes their souls. In a tragic state of denial, Yoshiko’s former friends insist that they can’t be sick-it must be the girl who is bringing sickness to them. Now a pariah, Yoshiko’s life is shattered as surely as if the bomb had disintegrated her upon impact. Director Shohei Imamura, a onetime assistant to the great Ozu and the director of such Japanese classics as The Insect Woman and The Ballad of Narayama, never sensationalizes his material; the story is effective told in a muted, subdued fashion, allowing the horror to arise from the inner torment of the characters rather than being artificially imposed by camera trickery or “shock” cutting. Based on a novel by Masuji Ibuse, this black-and-white film stars Yoshiko Tanaka, Kazuo Kitamura and Etsuko Ishihara. Date: Thursday November 26, 2009 Time: 7:00pm Admission is free; donations gratefully accepted Japanese Cooking Workshops “Chef Shoji” is offering 4 hands-on Japanese cooking workshops at the JCCC. Ping Pong workshop off to a great start! Getting a good workout while having fun is what this new ping pong workshop is aiming for, and it served its purpose well on October 15, the first day of the workshop. Yosh Inouye is the Sensei (Instructor) and those who came ranged from beginners to well experienced players. This workshop is coordinated by the J-Sports Team of the JCCC J-Comm Committee. J-Sports hopes to develop programs to outreach community members and provide an opportunity to connect through physical and mental activities. The ping pong workshop welcomes anyone who loves to play ping pong or who wants to learn how to play ping pong better. The current Fall workshop is already full but if you would like to join us for the next workshop, please contact the JCCC reception desk to put your name down on the waiting list. If there is enough interest (and people), the workshop can eventually evolve into the JCCC Ping Pong Club. Let’s have fun and get active together through the language of Ping Pong! Issei Day Photo courtesy: Yuki Hipsh Available Now - A Special Memento of an Unforgettable Day at the JCCC On July 9, 2009, Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan visited the JCCC, toured our Centre and met our community. It is a day that will be long remembered and which we have commemorated in a specially produced DVD memento of the event. The DVD is professionally filmed, edited and produced through acclaimed Toronto Sun photographer Stan Behal. In addition to the actual video the disc contains almost 100 photographic images which can be accessed via your computer. All speeches have been translated in English or Japanese so as to be accessible to all. The DVD is available now in our gift shop. Limited quantities so get your copy early. Price: $29.95 + taxes (10%discount for JCCC members) On October 4, 2009, the JCCC hosted our annual Issei Day to honour all those that are 70 and over. We filled Kobayashi Hall with about 450 people and there were more than half who were 80 years and over – in fact there were many that were 90 and over!!! There was wonderful entertainment provided with odori, karaoke and special performances by a young Yonsei, Jessica Tsuda, the JCCC Hula dancers and “Elvis” (by Steve Comilang). There was a short preview from the DVD of the Emperor and Empress of Japan’s visit to the JCCC. Many thanks to all the performers, the emcees, Yuki Nakamura and Nadi Dilimulati (of Wai Wai Wide), and Kunio Suyama and Stan Kayama, the emcees for the entertainment portion. At this time we would like to make specific acknowledgement to some of the people and groups who have helped make our Issei Day so successful in the present and the past. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Ishii for the bentos – as his small group of volunteers and crew worked for 2 days preparing the food and began early in the morning filling all the bento boxes. And much appreciation to Mrs. Nishihama who, over the past years, has made the fantastic manju! Special mention to the NJCA (Nobby Miura and his group of volunteers), who managed the registration tables and helped during the event. Much appreciation also to the Consul General of Japan for the generous annual donation of sake for the 80 years and over. Overall, our deep-felt appreciation to the hardworking committee, staff and all volunteers for a fantastic event. Front row L-R: Tomoko Kadonaga, Mickey Maikawa, Kazuo Tanaka, Pauline Doi. The Sakura Ball is the JCCC’s most high-profile fundraising event of the year. Bringing together the best of Canadian and Japanese entertainment, cuisine, art, business, and style, the Sakura Ball is a one of a kind, not to be missed event. One of the traditions of the Sakura Ball is the presentation of the Sakura Award. Awarded once a year by the JCCC, the Sakura Award recognizes exceptional contributions made by individuals to the promotion and exchange of Japanese culture and enhancing awareness of Nikkei heritage within Canada and abroad. 2010 Sakura Award recipient Raymond The first recipient of the Sakura Award was the Right Honourable Martin Brian Mulroney, the eighteenth Prime Minister of Canada, recognizing his participation in the Japanese Canadian Redress settlement on September 22, 1988. The JCCC is honoured to present this year’s Sakura Award to world-renowned Japanese Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama. Raymond Moriyama is a hero to many Canadians. His story of being interned during the Second World War because of his Japanese heritage and his rise to become one of Canada’s most respected architects continue to inspire. Raymond has applied his extraordinary vision and understanding to numerous projects including the original Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Scarborough Civic Centre, Toronto Reference Library, Bata Shoe Museum, National Museum of Saudi Arabia, Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, and the new Canadian War Museum in Ottawa that recently received the Governor General’s Medal for Architecture. Such landmark projects consistently earn praise for their intimate relationship to land, nature, and community.
