Frontline for Peace - Powerful Multimedia Peace Concert at the JCCC
Frontline for Peace ‘touches our heart with the love for the children’. Dr. Kuwayama shows us
hope for the future with his courageous spirit.
In 2008, Vancouver’s Nikkei community invited Dr. Kuwayama from Japan to be part of the
20th Anniversary of Redress event. He spoke both in English and in Japanese from the stage and
sang songs playing guitar and violin, while showing the video and slides. Although that was his first
international concert outside of Japan, his performance captivated the hearts of the audience,
The Peace Concert is a tremendously uplifting and informative event that features the
musical and story telling talents of Dr. Norihiko Kuwayama. It is a concert event that brings the
audience a message of global peace, while raising awareness of the struggle for human rights,
particularly of children in war-torn countries.
Dr. Kuwayama shares his experiences as a volunteer medical doctor in developing countries
and in areas of conflict through a colourful narration of hundreds of slides in combination with
original songs. His grassroots approach makes it accessible to all. He has performed his concert
over 2000 times and has toured extensively in Japan.
How can we help others? His beautiful music and lyrics, backed by images, forces the audience
to consider their own lives and the lives of others, thinking about how we can help those people
who lack basic human rights and to think about how we can work to bring peace in those areas of
conflict. This event is very popular in Japan and tickets sell out quickly.

Date: Friday September 24, 2010
Time: 7:00pm
Ticket: $10 JCCC members, $15 non-members, $7 children up to age 18 +HST
*Q & A session will be held after the performance.
*This event is for children 5 and over. We regret we cannot allow children under 5 to this performance.
*10% discount for groups of 20 or more.
What is Frontline for Peace (Chikyu-no-stage)?
“Chikyu-no-stage” , which began on January 15, 1996, is a completely new type of benefit concert, combining live music, large-screen
video images, and narration using pictures. The concert features images on screen synchronized with music - various events occurring
in the world are projected on large-screen video and pictures, accompanied by narration and music.
Who is it?
Dr. Norihiko Kuwayama, a psychiatrist in Yamagata prefecture, is the host. He has visited 53 countries, and implemented international
medical aid activities. This peace concert is the grand culmination of activities by Dr. Kuwayama, who has engaged in NGO (NonGovernmental Organization) activities while belonging to AMDA (Association of Medical Doctors of Asia), JEN (Japan Emergency NGOs),
NICCO (Nippon International Cooperation Community Development), and Frontline (the name for overseas activities of Chikyu-no-stage,
a not for profit organization).

Japanese most sought after

Matsutake are considered the king of Japanese mushrooms

to find (like truffles) and are very expensive.
At the event Chef Hashimoto will demonstrate 3 different
matsutake-based recipes. This will be followed by a tasting of
matsutake dishes which are served as part of Hashimoto’s famous
kaiseki cuisine. The event will be a rare treat for serious lovers of
exceptional Japanese food as well as those curious about how to
create these delicacies at home. Participants will also take home a
package of dried matsutake mushrooms.
Spaces are limited so sign up now! Participants can also order
matsutake (dried or fresh) at a special 20% discount (please see
below for details). One participant will win a $600 gift certificate
for a meal at Kaiseki Yuzen Hashimoto.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN…JAPAN!
The Japanese Canadian Hockey
Experience in Film
The JCCC is proud to present an evening of Japanese Canadian
films themed around Ice Hockey. Both are by Japanese Canadian
filmmakers and each explores how the most Canadian of sports
has impacted their experiences with the Japanese community and
culture.
JA JA Rock Dem’ Sock Dem’ is Coalhouse Campbell’s film of
his experiences travelling to Japan as a semi-professional hockey
player while searching out his Japanese grandfather’s, and his
own, Japanese roots.
The Contest is a short film by
Naoko Kumagai which traces the
influence of hockey in the cultural
assimilation of a new immigrant
Japanese woman (based on her own
mother).

“A very black comedy…hypnotically told, beautifully acted.”
Martin Hoyle, Financial Times, London
The JCCC presents this darkly
comic tale of manga, elicit
love, desperate housewives,
attempted murder and one
deeply dysfunctional family
in the heart of the Japanese
countryside.
After both parents die
in a car accident, elder sister
Sumika (Satou Eriko) comes
back home from Tokyo because the family is no longer able to send
her money for acting school. The other 2 members of the family
are the little sister Kyomi (Satsukawa Aimi), an asthma-stricken,
aspiring manga writer and older brother Shinji (Nagase Masatoshi),
who abuses his wife Machiko (Nagasaku Hiromi). Now that the
frustrated elder sister is back (and eager to leave again though she
has no money), tension within the family hits an all-time-high. Every
member of the family has a dark secret and it leads to one event
after another...
The film, directed in 2007 by Daihachi Yoshida, starring Aimi
Satsukawa, Eriko Satou, Hiromi Nagasaku and Masatoshi Nagase,
won film festival awards around the world in the acting and directorial
categories.

Issei Day - New Format!
The Board of Directors of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
extends an invitation to Issei Day on Sunday October 3, 2010 and
would like to welcome all who are 70 years of age and older. The
program begins at 2:00pm and concludes around 5:00pm.
This year we are celebrating the 48th anniversary of Issei Day.
Last year about 450 Issei, Nisei, Sansei and Ijusha gathered in the
Kobayashi Hall to celebrate this annual event.
The day is full of activities, with entertainment of songs, odori
and sing-alongs. Please come out and enjoy this special day!
As usual there will be a wonderful and tasty bento served during
intermission.
With our growing numbers, and due to our space limitations,
we require that EVERYONE attending to pre-register at 416441-2345 by Friday September 24, 2010. We regret that we
will not be able to accommodate guests who arrive without preregistration. We also regret that caregivers under 70 cannot
occupy a space at the tables but can remain nearby. It is wonderful
to see so many of our seniors come to this event but we are now
at our maximum capacity. We appreciate your understanding and
cooperation so that we can plan an event where everyone is able
to sit, relax and enjoy the afternoon.
We look forward to seeing you.

The Road to Asia Festival 2010
The 10th Anniversary Edition!!
This November 6 and 7, the JCCC will again find itself at the centre
of the Asian-Canadian community as we gather at 6 Garamond
Court for the 10th Anniversary of The Road to Asia Festival.
The Road to Asia Festival 2010 is a two-day festival celebrating
the richness and exciting diversity of Asian culture, all under one
roof. The festival creates a thriving multicultural atmosphere in
which individual cultures are highlighted through their traditional
Food, Arts and Crafts, Music, Dance and Martial Arts.
Last year’s festival created a rich mix of the cultures of 9 different
Asian nations and was visited by approximately 3,000 people. We
are hoping to see all of our previous participants returning this year
including Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan,
China, India, Taiwan, and, of course, Japan. We hope to celebrate
this fantastic milestone with more of everything that makes The
Road to Asia Festival so much fun.
This festival takes the JCCC’s motto of “Friendship Through
Culture” to a whole new level. Please keep an eye out for more
information in the October issue and plan to join us for another
exciting trip along the Road to Asia.
The Speaker Series – George Hewson
“What’s Up With Me and the JCs?”
Join us on Saturday September 25, 2010 at the
JCCC for an intimate presentation by George
Hewson, retired high school teacher, Aikido
sensei and long-time JC community volunteer, as
he presents a special slide show that will include
pictures from his 2008 trip to Japan with his wife,
Gerry (nee Nishimura).
“My presentation is entitled: ‘What's Up with Me and the JCs?’
It has to do with how I became familiar with Japanese Canadians
as a result of my interest in martial arts,” Hewson, a 6th dan Aikido
teacher, explains. “It outlines my experiences at the JCCC, meeting
and marrying Gerry Nishimura, travelling to Japan, etc. The
underlying theme, however, is about what it means to be Canadian.
The story is, thus, both personal and universal since it addresses
the issue of identity.”
"'Friendship through culture' has transformed my life,” he
adds.
Hewson is currently a teacher in the Education Department at
the Royal Ontario Museum, teaching courses about Chinese and
Japanese culture. The 6th dan teacher opened Aikido Seishinkai in
1995 with his 4th dan wife and is president of the Canadian Aikido
Federation. Gerry’s mother, Yachiyo Miike, was born in Vancouver
and father, Kinzaburo, immigrated from Shiga-ken. After internment
they went to Cedar Springs, Ontario, and later settled in Toronto.
The Speaker Series talk is hosted by Nikkei Voice writer
Norm Ibuki. The talk and slide show will begin at 1:00pm. Tea and
refreshments will be served afterwards. Come join us for what is
certain to be a very personal and informative talk about Hewson’s
active membership in the JC community for more than 30 years
and his relationship with Japanese and Nikkei culture.
Samurai Myths and Realities
George Hewson is back this
fall to conduct 2 seminars.
The first one, Samurai Myths
and Realities, will attempt to
dispel many of the common
misunderstanding about the
samurai. It will be an evening
of scholarly and entertaining
discussion on the warrior class that ruled Japan for seven hundred
years. No previous knowledge of Japanese history and culture is
required.
George Hewson, B.A., M.A., B.Ed., OCT is a 6th degree black
belt martial arts instructor and the President of the Canadian
Aikido Federation, a teacher at the Royal Ontario Museum, and a
member of the JCCC Board of Directors. He has lived and studied
in Japan.

Actor Takaaki Enoki Live at the JCCC
Talk by Takaaki Enoki and Takafumi Saigo with screening
movie“Hanjiro”
On Saturday October 23,
one of Japan’s leading
actors, Takaaki Enoki, is
coming to the JCCC to
introduce his new movie
“Hanjiro”.
Hanjiro, born from
Tadaaki Enoki’s passion
to depict the true beauty of
Japanese spiritual culture,
brings samurai and Imperial Japanese Army General Toshiaki
Karino (Hanjiro Nakamura) to life.
It was the end of the Edo period. Hanjiro was born into a
low class Samurai family and was responsible for looking after his
mother and sister by growing potatoes on poor land. He later went
to Kyoto with Saigo Takamori, who was a leading figure among
young samurai in Satsuma. Hanjiro was appointed to an important
position by Saigo for his courage of heart and sword skills, and his
dedication and generous character endeared him to all samurai
in Kyoto. In the transition between the Edo period and Meiji
Restoration, he made his mark. He became a high ranking officer in
the new Imperial Army and eventually, Hanjiro became a brigadier
general in the early years of the Imperial Japanese Army.
After Saigo lost the battle for power over “Seikanron” to his
rival Okubo Toshimichi, Saigo resigned his position, and he and
Hanjiro returned to Satsuma. Five years later the great Satsuma
Rebellion broke out….
In his talk Takaaki Enoki will discuss about the movie and spirit
of Japanese martial arts.
Takafumi Saigo, potter, will be also visiting the JCCC and talk
about the historical background of movie and his great grandfather
Takamori Saigo.
Screening of Hanjiro will follow.

War Years - November 19 – 21, 2010
This conference, hosted by the JCCC, is dedicated to preserving
and sharing the Japanese Canadian history of the war years (19411945), and is a tribute to our founding generations. The war years
significantly shaped Japanese Canadian heritage, more so than
any other time.
This conference is an opportunity for the Nikkei to share their
war years memories with family, friends and our community. We
welcome all stories – from the camps, sugar beet farms, selfsupporting locations, prisoner of war camps, the armed forces, and
towns across Canada and Japan. This is an educational opportunity
for everyone, completely unique from any other and these personal
stories are not found in the history text books!
Conference Agenda:
- Friday, November 19, 2010 (evening) the Lemon Creek Band
and guest speaker Greg Robinson, an associate professor of
history from the Université du Québec à Montréal and author of A
Tragedy of Democracy: Japanese Confinement in North America,
will be joining us for the opening night.
- Saturday November 20, 2010 will feature guest speakers Dr. Ina,
PhD, psychotherapist and professor at California State University
and Frank Moritsugu, WWII veteran, journalist and long time
columnist with the Nikkei Voice. Speaker participants will gather
in small groups and will be given the opportunity to share their
war years' memories. These memories will be preserved on video
and posted to the Sedai website so than all interested parties may
access these stories. Listener participants will learn from the Nisei
stories, and a short history seminar. We are pleased to announce
our featured movie will be Henry’s Glasses written and directed
by Japanese Canadian Brendan Uegama (www.brendanuegama.
com).
- Sunday November 21, 2010 (morning) will finish the conference by
everyone coming together to discuss commentary and impression
of the conference and share what you have learned.
Registration deadline is Friday November 5, 2010. Register by
September 30, 2010 and your registration will automatically be

If you believe in the importance of preserving your family
history, then we encourage you to please contact us to discuss
this amazing conference. Each memory is a unique and important
thread in the fabric of Japanese Canadian history!
We have had a great response but we are still in search of those
who experienced the war years. Did you experience the war years,

war years? If so, please look for a copy of the information package,

Within the month of July, the Sedai
Committee has dedicated an
immense amount of effort and hard
work to preserving the Japanese
Canadian history. For those of you
who are reading Sedai Corner for the first time, the Sedai Project
is committed to collecting, documenting, preserving and sharing
the history of Japanese Canadians. We, the Sedai Committee,
collect and preserve the Japanese Canadian history through audio
and video recordings in a relaxed interview format. We continue to
search for all Japanese Canadians who were born pre-war and war
years to come and share their stories with us.
We are happy to report 12 interviews were completed within
the month of July! Overall we are very pleased to announce a total
of 44 interviews (as of July 31, 2010) have been completed so far!

share their family stories. A special thank-you to Sid Ikeda, Mickey
Matsubayashi, Mike Murakami and Peter Wakayama for their

New JCCC Receptionist
Hi! My name is Jerome Geronimo,
and I work part-time at the JCCC
reception desk. Currently, I am
also a student at the University of
Toronto pursuing my Masters in
Child Study and Education, with
hopes of teaching kindergarten or
primary grades at an international
school in the near future.
This summer I was the camp
leader at Kamp Kodomo and it
was a great experience working
with the children and seeing
them explore traditional aspects
of Japanese culture such as folk
stories, sports, and odori.
Working at the JCCC gives me
some reminders of the amazing
two and a half years I spent in Hokkaido and Osaka working as
an English teacher. It also gives me a chance to continue using
Japanese on a more regular basis. Please don't hesitate to say
hello when you see me around the Centre!

Toronto Zoo has announced their annual recruitment for new yearround volunteers. Dynamic and outgoing adults are encouraged
to join their diverse team of volunteers educating and inspiring
visitors, taking the lead at special events, and promoting wildlife
conservation. Volunteer opportunities are flexible and allow
participants to use and develop their education and communication
expertise in a fun, social setting.
Zoo volunteers receive free admission to the zoo with a
guest, free parking, volunteer recognition events, and much
more, including the opportunity to be a part of Canada’s premier
zoo family. Weekday volunteers assist with elementary level
student workshops by leading curriculum-based tours on the zoo
site. Weekend volunteers assist at special events and operate
educational areas on the zoo site. Volunteers do not handle plants
or animals.
The deadline for applications is Friday September 17, 2010.
Please see the zoo’s web site, torontozoo.com, email tzvolunteers@
torontozoo.ca, or call 416-392-5942 for an application. Applications
are due no later than Friday September 17, 2010.
Toronto Zoo year-round volunteer applications are always
available on the zoo’s web site or by mail and are due annually by the
third Friday in September. Applicants are screened and interviewed
and selected individuals are invited to a training program taking
place once a week (weekday volunteers attend one weekday class
per week and weekend volunteers attend one Saturday class per
week). Training encompasses animal knowledge and interpretation

Arigato Day
The JCCC held its annual Arigato Day on Sunday July 18. With about 250 volunteers in attendance, the afternoon
started with some rousing games of Bingo. This was followed by some short speeches including one by JCCC
President, Gary Kawaguchi, who spoke about the strategic plans for the future of the JCCC. Lorene Nagata also
gave an explanation of the objective of the Japanese Canadian Experience Conference that is being held in the
fall. Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Food Corporation then laid out a fabulous buffet.
To end the evening, the JCCC presented certificates to the 19 recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service
Awards for 2010. These recipients were recognized by the Ministry of Immigration and Citizenship at an awards
ceremony held in June.
The JCCC appreciates the many talents and skills of their volunteers. Their energy and enthusiasm are a
part of the JCCC’s programs, events and just about every other aspect of the operation of the Centre. Arigato
Day is just a small measure of our gratitude.
Thank you very much and Arigato Gozaimasu!!!!

Kamp Kodomo 2010
It was another wonderful summer with the Kamp Kodomo. Attending from 1 to 3 weeks, almost 40 children were involved in many different
activities that kept them active, energized and engrossed in the Japanese culture.
Each session features a variety of different activities. These sessions included many of our favourite workshops, like cooking with Chef
Shoji, judo, karate, and ikebana. We also saw the return of the SumoKids Foundation and weekly sumo lessons. And for the first time, Kamp
Kodomo visited The Gardiner Museum to see the current exhibit of Japanese porcelain. The children had so much to do!
The success of Kamp Kodomo Summer 2010 could not have been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and patience of the staff
and many volunteers who helped at the camp. Without their help, Kamp Kodomo would not have been as much fun, nor would it have run
as smoothly as it did! A special thank you to Jerome, our head teacher. Another thank you to our volunteers: Bianca, Cameron, Derek,
Jaclyn, Jason, Milan and Teralyn. Together you helped to make the campers experience memorable. As well, many thanks to the dedicated
instructors who rearranged their busy schedules or took time off of work to come and teach the campers. Your support of Kamp Kodomo and
the JCCC is an inspiration. Thanks to: Keiko Omori, JCCC Judo, Shito-ryu Itosukai, JCCC Iaido, JCCC Naginata, SumoKids Foundation and
Charlie Bray, Ikenobo Ikebana, Shoji Yano, Association for Japanese Culture, the Gendai Gallery and Mika Fukuma.
We hope that everyone will join us for Kamp Kodomo March Break 2010!

Shinsedai Cinema Festival Draws Big Crowd, High Praise
The JCCC’s 2nd annual Shinsedai Cinema Festival was held between July 22 and July 25 and eclipsed the last year’s festival in terms of
attendance (3000+) and the number and quality of the films.
Twenty five films were screened over 4 days with a number of the directors and performers in attendance including: director/writer
Momoko Ando (Kakera); director and animator Akino Kondo (Ladybird’s Requiem); director/ writer Gen Takahashi (Confessions of a Dog);
writer/director Yasunobu Takahashi (Locked Out), director Tokachi Tsuchiya (A Normal Life, Please); actor, comedian and performer Shaq
(Gunman Champion, Kakera).
Highlights included the opening night reception and screening of Kakera, the Canadian premiere of the powerful indictment of Japanese
police corruption, Confessions of a Dog, and a screening of Kenji Mizoguchi’s The Water Magician backed with a live soundtrack by Toronto
ambient musicals VOWLS which left the audience moved to tears. The film makers were available throughout the festival and were very open
and accessible to audiences.
In a master class panel discussion in collaboration with the Canadian Film Centre, the directors talked about how independent Japanese
film makers are forced to take their films overseas in order avoid the restrictive Japanese distribution system. According to Gen Takahashi,
the JCCC’s Shinsedai is well recognised and appreciated in Japan as an outlet for young Japanese film makers. In fact, Takahashi’s film has
been picked up for international release on the strength of its Shinsedai showing.
We look forward to next year and again providing Canadian audiences a chance to connect to the best of the new generation of Japanese
film makers and their work.

J.C. 3-Pitch Wietzes Toyota Makes Quarter-Finals at Formosan Cup
by Bob Doi
For the first time in its 24 year history, the JC 3-Pitch league entered a team into
a tournament. We were invited to participate in the 37th annual TCAT Formosan
Cup, which has become one of the premiere Taiwanese/Asian softball tournaments
in all of North America. Held over the August long weekend, a group of 10 men
and 5 women represented the Japanese Canadian 3-Pitch League under the Wietzes
Toyota banner.
Playing in Markham, Ontario, the team split 4 Saturday games with 2 wins and 2
losses, the team succumbed in the Sunday quarter-final game by a score of 9-8. The
tournament attracted 35 team entries from across the GTA and the United States. A
fun time was had by all and we look forward to improving on our inaugural results in
next year’s tournament.
As for the regular season of JC 3-Pitch, it concluded on August 8th with play-off
positions being contested right to the final games – one of the tightest standings in
many years – all leading to an exciting playoffs. Results will be available in the next
issue of the JCCC Newsletter. Congratulations to all teams for a fine season and
to Neil Nagamatsu who led the Julie Chan Naturopathic Doctor team to the regular
season title.
