Every summer, this sleepy town of 16,000 in Gifu Prefecture puts on the festival over a series of 31 nights. Today it attracts over 350,000 visitors and is one of the three most famous dance festivals in Japan, and is designated a significant intangible folk cultural asset by the Japanese government. The fact that the festival can be enjoyed regardless of age or skill makes Gujo Odori one of the most accessible dance festivals in Japan. On Friday March 9, 2007 at 7pm, the JCCC will host 6 dancers from Gujo Hachiman, Japan, who will perform the 10 dances of Gujo Odori and will also conduct a workshop session to teach participants some of these dances. Experience is not necessary – just bring your desire to participate! This is a rare opportunity to experience a very unique workshop. The workshop is free, but we encourage you to register in order for us to better prepare for the event. Contact 416-441-2345 or [email protected] to register today! 2 Photo courtesy of Neil Schmidt Sleeping Beauty, a new exhibition by acclaimed Japanese artist tomolennon will be held in the Gallery at the JCCC from March 29 to April 28. Sleeping Beauty is a collection of fifteen full-sized portraits in which women’s dream worlds are visualized. The women appear as the princess of their dreams. In collaboration with other accomplished artists - photographers, make-up artists, hair stylists and fashion designers from in the fashion industry in Toronto, tomolennon has created the womens’ ideal images. To create the final work, the subjects are photographed while sleeping in their dream set . Afterwards their dream world painted on huge, life-size canvases. The subject’s dress is also sewn into the canvas to create this fascinating meeting of art and fashion. tomolennon feels by including the dresses on the canvas it helps us recognize the dream world is not simply the imagination but a real image – the dresses connect imagination with reality. tomolennon received “Best Visual Artist of the Year” honours from NOW Magazine (2002) and Eye Magazine (2003). His work has been featured in books, magazines and other media including OMNI television’s “Metropia”. And he has exhibited his works overseas, in Canada, U.S., China and Japan. As curator, he developed the charity art exhibition, “Let’s Have a Dream”, artists from both Canada and Japan include Yoko Ono (2002); the exhibition for Canadian and Japanese artists who are inspired by Japanese culture, Tokyo Doll(2003); and the live painting at the 60th commemoration of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at Toronto’s City Hall(2005). MOVIE NIGHT : HANA YORIMO NAO Hana yorimo nao is the new film from "Dare mo Shiranai (Nobody Knows)" director Hirokazu Koreeda. The year is 1702. A young samurai, Sozaemon Aoki has left his countryside hometown and is now living in Edo in search of Hana – a Samurai Drama Jubei Kanazawa - the man who killed from the Director of his father. He is living in a dilapidated “Nobody Knows” tenement house, in the poor quarters of Edo. His neighbors in the so-called "row houses" are all good, solid folk who can never even hope to rise out of the squalor of their surroundings. Sozaemon, the provincial samurai, becomes friends with a variety of characters including a habitual drunk, an unsuccessful would-be petty official, a ragman, a perky girl, a doctor, and a scrivener. As the relationships between the characters unfold, we are led deeper into the blossoming love story of Sozaemon and the beautiful widow, Osae. Although he has never forgotten his task to find his father's enemy and to succeed in his vengeance, being around Osae and JCCC BAZAAR Our annual JCCC Bazaar is on its way! ASAHI BASEBALL EXHIBITION Just a reminder that the Asahi Baseball exhibit “Levelling the Playing Field” is currently on display in the JCCC Gallery until March 14, 2007. You will be transported back to the Powell Street Baseball Grounds before the war. See artifacts and learn about the players who were heroes of their generation. The exhibition is open on the weekends only, but special weekday viewing can be arranged by phoning the JCCC reception at 416-441-2345. her son, Sozaemon feels a warm feeling inside, which leads to doubts about the entire act of revenge. However, to walk away from the revenge act could actually bring his entire family down; not only would he be without the reward from the Shogun, but also, as a samurai, his failure to seek revenge would be an act of cowardice, and a disgrace to the entire family name. With a life enriched by new friends and relationships, Sozaemon must now risk it all to find a way to exact his revenge on the man who killed his father. If you have securities such as stocks or mutual funds and have thought about selling a portion of them, on which you will have capital gains – you will have to pay tax. If this might be your situation, you may be able to reduce your capital gains tax by gifting these securities to a registered charity. Donate your capital gains - reduce tax As we have mentioned in previous Cranes articles, the gifting of securities was in last year’s federal budget. The May 2, 2006 announcement by Minister Jim Flaherty made it more attractive to gift securities to charities. The budget stated that charitable donations of publicly listed securities such as stocks and mutual funds are exempt from capital gains taxation on gains triggered as a result of the gift to charity. What is a Qualifying Security? Investments that will be eligible for this special tax treatment include: • Shares, rights and debt obligations (typically bonds or debentures) that are listed on the stock exchange. • Shares of Canadian public mutual fund corporations and units of mutual fund trust. • Interest in a segregated fund trust. • Bond debenture, note or mortgage of the Canadian Federal or provincial governments. To determine your tax benefits of donating securities go to www. giftabulator-beta.com Contact Bill Petruck at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre 416-441-2345 or [email protected] for further information.
