Fifth Sunday of Easter - Bethesda-by-the-Sea
Fifth Sunday of Easter Bishop’s Visitation and Confirmation May 18, 2014 8:00 a.m. service page 3 | 10:00 a.m. service page 4 On the Cover: Bethesda-by-the-Sea’s Communion Set Lake Worth, Florida The picture of the flagon, chalice, and paten is of our “Lake Worth” Communion Set dated from the late nineteenth century. The set remains in use for the celebration of Eucharist. The engraving on each piece identifies it as having entered the ownership of the Bethesda congregation prior to 1911, when the municipality of Lake Worth surrendered a portion of its land to form the new Town of Palm Beach. Hallmarks indicate the set having been manufactured by the Gorham Company of Providence, RI, and the date mark, in the form of a tiny triton, is that of 1897. The one-room mission church, begun in 1889 by the Rev. Joseph N. Mulford, was replaced by a second Bethesda-by-theSea in 1895. The new and larger church building, designed by Cady, Berg, and See of New York, required a grander communion set and it was purchased. For the next thirty years communicants would enjoy the sight of a well-crafted wooden altar supporting the Lake Worth Set, silhouetted in front of a Tiffany window. —Jethro Hurt, Archivist We welcome children from the youngest ages to enjoy church with their families, and we’re pleased to have you worship with us this morning. For those who prefer, we do offer a child care ministry at all of our Sunday services for children up to three years of age. You are welcome to take your child to our nursery at any point during the service—just ask an usher to point the way. In case of an emergency Bethesda has two AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) available—in the sound booth at the back of the church and on the south wall in the Parish Hall. • • • • • Please turn off your cell phones. Page numbers refer to The Book of Common Prayer (red). Hymn numbers refer to The Hymnal 1982 (blue). Busy Bags for little children are available at the main entrance or from an usher. A large-print version of this leaflet is available from our ushers. Seasonal Liturgical Rotation for Easter • Our white, red, and gold Easter vestments and altar hangings are used. Our usual silver communion vessels and alms basins are once again used. The Paschal Candle is in full view throughout Easter season. • The service begins with the Easter Acclamation. • The Gloria in excelsis and Te Deum and the use of “alleluia” have returned to normal usage. • We use no Confession with the Prayers of the People. • We use a Doxology setting full of “alleluias.” • We use Eucharistic Prayer D and remain standing throughout the prayer. • The Fraction Anthem is an Easter setting of Christ Our Passover, full of “alleluias.” • The Dismissal includes “alleluia, alleluia” both from the Deacon and the congregation. • We process out on the final hymn, and a Postlude concludes the service. -2- 8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist: Rite I The service begins on page 323. Lesson Acts 7:55–60 Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died. Reader Psalm 31:1–5, 15–16 The Word of the Lord. People (text found on page 3 of the leaflet) Thanks be to God. Thomas Pavlechko The congregation, remaining seated, joins in singing the antiphon each time the introduction is played. Epistle 1 Peter 2:2–10 Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner,” and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Gospel Procession The congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. †Hymn 487 Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life Gospel John 14:1–14 Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. The Call People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus told his disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the -5- way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.” Deacon Homily People The Gospel of the Lord. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. The Celebrant proceeds It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, Sanctus and Benedictus Hymnal S–125 The congregation remains standing and the Celebrant continues. Richard Proulx We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to -9- prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. Celebrant and People We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. The Celebrant continues Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. And grant that we may find our inheritance with all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. AMEN. - 10 - Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Celebrant and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Fraction Anthem Victory arr. H. Pysher Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Behold who you are; become what you receive. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord’s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar or to the chapel altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, please either go to the chapel or request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. During the Communion Hymn 348 Lord, We Have Come at Your Own Invitation Anthem Love Bade Me Welcome O quanta qualia David Hurd Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back, guiltie of dust and sinne. But quick-eyed Love observing me grow slack from my first entrance in, drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning, if I lacked anything. A guest, I answered, worthy to be here: Love said, You shall be he. I, the unkinde, ungratefull? Ah, my deare, I cannot look on thee. Love took my hand and smiling did reply, Who made the eyes but I? Truth, Lord but I have marred them: let my shame go where it doth deserve. And know you not, sayes Love, who bore the blame? My deare, then I will serve. You must sit down, sayes Love, and taste my meat: so I did sit and eat. [George Herbert] - 11 - The congregation stands when the Celebrant returns to the altar. Sending Out of Eucharistic Visitors Celebrant People We who are many are one body. For we all share one bread, and one cup. Postcommunion Prayer Celebrant and People Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
