Credit worthiness is based on many factors, primarily your income, assets and credit score. Most lenders use these factors to determine whether to give you credit, how much they will lend and at what rate. The first thing to do is know your credit score. You can obtain a free credit report from www.AnnualCreditReport.com. This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. AnnualCreditReport.com is the official site to help consumers obtain their free credit report. Do not be taken in by other sites that charge a fee. You can get the same information for free. Once you have these reports review them carefully. According to Rod Griffith, Director of Public Education for Experian (one of the three reporting agencies), “Look over your credit report and make sure everything is correct and that there are no signs of fraud or identity theft. You need to know what is in your report.” If you see such things as reporting inaccuracies, incorrect late payments or incorrect account information, report it immediately. You can dispute in writing almost anything you think is negative. This can be seen by people reviewing your score. Clearing up these details may improve your score. Of course, it is imperative to report possible identity theft or fraud immediately. Word of caution—the credit report is to be used as a guide only. There are many different ways that information is reported. While the number score used by ABCO may not be exactly the same as in the reports, you will have a good idea where you stand “credit wise” and you may stop identity theft. When you apply for a loan at ABCO, we will let you know your score and how we calculated it. At ABCO our goal is to find you the right loan at rates and terms you can afford. FIVE TIPS TO BOOST YOUR CREDIT SCORE Pay your bills on time. Late or missed payments, foreclosures and bankruptcies have the greatest negative effect. East Ridge Shopping Center 621 Beverly-Rancocas Road Keep debt in check. Try to keep account balances below 50% of your credit limit. Example: If you have a $2,000 limit, keep the outstanding balance less than $1,000. RANCOCAS VILLAGE Keep accounts open. Closing old accounts—especially ones with a good payment history—shortens your credit history and lowers your score. 215 Main Street BRANCH OFFICES ATLANTIC CITY 2652 Atlantic Avenue BROWNS MILLS 81 Pemberton-Browns Mills Road COOPER HOSPITAL (Hospital Employees Only) 1 Cooper Plaza, Camden EGG HARBOR TWP. 6716 Black Horse Pike, Suite 8 GLASSBORO Doubletree Center, 870 Delsea Drive Avoid excessive inquiries. A lot of new credit requests—in a short period of time—can reduce your score. Keep a healthy mix of credit. Vary the types of credit—auto loan, credit cards, mortgage—secured and non-secured. All of one kind can raise a flag. LITTLE OR NO CREDIT HISTORY? Have you heard the phrase, “to get credit you need credit”? At ABCO, we can help. We have a Credit Builder Loan with no credit check. Taking out a small loan and building a savings habit will start you on the road to obtaining your credit history.
