to the community.
Construction to Begin on School Playground
The construction phase of the south playground at Laurelhurst School is
underway! Thanks to the hard work and generosity of many, the $90,000
City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods grant was not only matched
but exceeded. Additional funding is needed to develop the full plan.
Phase 1 renovations, expected to start in late summer, include resurfacing
part (or all) of the playground; purchase and installation of a play
structure, basketball hoops, and tetherballs; and installation of curbs,
seating, and an outdoor stage. A more welcoming brick entryway off of
47th Avenue NE will feature Laurelhurst Legacy Bricks.
Upcoming fund raising activities include the Second Annual Laurelhurst
Golf Tournament on September 22 at the Sandpoint Country Club and a
parts sale of playground features (how about a basketball hoop or a
seatwall in your name?). It’s not too late to contribute to this effort to
build a better, safer, more enriching playground for kids and families to
enjoy for years to come. To get involved in any way, contact committee

Parents Seek Ideas and Funding for Laurelhurst
Park Playground Equipment Replacement
Children love to play outdoors, and the outdoor environment provides
unique opportunities for play and learning. Laurelhurst playfield
equipment, installed in 1998, is some of the oldest in the city. The Seattle
Parks Department has indicated that the equipment is near the end of its
useful life span and should be replaced in two to four years. When the
City determines the equipment is beyond its lifespan and unsafe, it is
removed, which has occurred at Seward Park and Bayview Park in
Magnolia in the past few months. Currently, there is no funding to replace
the play structures; however, the department supports a communitydriven effort to raise the funding.
A group of concerned parents – “Play it safe at Laurelhurst” – is raising
money to purchase and install a new piece of play equipment for two- to
five-year-olds. Other than infant swings, there is no equipment at the
park designed specifically for children under five. By starting with this
first piece of equipment, the group is beginning the process of getting
new and safe equipment for neighborhood children of all ages.
The committee’s initial goal is $20,000. If they raise $10,000 by the July
6, they will apply for a Neighborhood Matching Grant. All donations are
tax deductible. To contribute, send a check payable to the City of Seattle
