Kiba Jacobson, local muralist and volunteer,
got involved in the center through the Greater
Denton Arts Council. CACDC Executive
Director, Dan Leal, reached out to GDAC
while looking for volunteer artists who would
be willing to transform the white walls of
CACDC into a child friendly environment.
Lori Nelson states, “There are many benefits
to these murals. The murals not only give the
child something friendly to look at, but it also
acts as a conversation piece. With younger
children, the murals play a second role. We
use the items in the mural to help us assess
the child’s developmental level. This aids in
knowing the limitations of the child.”
Rose Boehm, Clinical Director, her Clinical
Interns, and Paula Fornara, Sexual Assault
Nurse Examiner also use the murals in the
same manner before entering a therapy session
or medical exam.
Kiba, through her artistic talents and vision,
has added an amazing element of healing that
children can easily identify with.
Kiba’s first project gave life to the center’s two
interview rooms, painted with subtle shades
of blue and green. Lori Nelson, Forensic
Interviewer, felt the impact immediately when
she interviewed her first child in the “green”
interview room (term given by CACDC to
differentiate between the two). According to
Lori, “The child seemed relaxed and able to
focus more easily”.
After several meetings between Kiba, Dan
Leal, board members, and staff, a plan was in
place to brighten things up with warm story
book images. Those who visited our former
facility would account for numerous murals
and kid’s artwork displayed throughout the
offices. This seemed to be the last and major
piece missing to help these children feel a little
more at ease in the new facility. Upon entering
a secured entrance, children are now greeted
by a beautiful rainforest mural. Another
hallway takes them through an underwater
experience with whales, dolphins, sea horses
and plant life.
Schedule a tour to see these beautiful murals
or make a donation to help cover the cost of
paint and tools. (972) 317-2818 or visit

The Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton
County’s mission is, “To provide justice and
healing through interagency collaboration”.
When you think in terms of the word ‘healing’,
you probably think of the center’s licensed
counselors, children sitting in individual and
group therapy sessions, animal therapy or
many other images. However, healing comes
in many forms and in Kiba Jacobson’s case; it
comes in the form of art and bright colors.

A Look Back at April
Several events were held this April in support of Child Abuse Prevention month.

Running Moms Rock 5k Run
Message from the Executive Director
On a Tuesday night in May, I returned
to work just before 6:00 p.m. to prepare
for a presentation and to see how busy
our counseling program was that night.
As I approached the front door, I saw
at least 5 families on the porch sitting
on donor sponsored benches with kids
waiting to see their counselors. Meanwhile, cars were driving into the parking
lot behind me. I opened the front door
and the lobby of our new building was
absolutely packed.
At 6:00 p.m., the counselors opened
the security door, and what seemed to
be a never ending line of children and
families started filing in. I walked to
the different therapy rooms, and they
were filling quickly. We had three parent
group meetings with an average of 12
parent’s per group and four children’s
group sessions with an average of 9
kids per group. The childcare room and
outdoor play therapy area was full of
children with 24 kids in childcare that

night. I then walked outside and every
single one of our 50 parking spaces was
full with the exception of 1 handicapped
spot. I was amazed at the sight, but also
very happy to see that the new building
is serving its purpose.
The demand for services has increased
to the point where we are filling our
Lewisville office 3 nights per week,
and we have outgrown our new Denton
office on Wednesday nights. Children
and families are excited to come for
counseling because we have top notch
counselors, a great facility and a feeling
of support. The need for counseling is
on the rise and we are also seeing a rapid
increase in forensic interviews and other
services.
Your help is definitely needed. Please
do not think that just because the new
building is here that the Children’s
Advocacy Center is no longer in need. It
is quite the opposite in that the need has

2009 CACDC Team Member of the Year
Each year, the Children’s Advocacy Center’s
multidisciplinary team, consisting of Denton
County law enforcement, Child Protective
Services, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners
and the Denton County District Attorney’s
Office, selects a team member who exhibits
a high level of commitment to the team
and has a passion for assisting children and
their families traumatized by abuse. In April,
Assistant District Attorney, Rick Daniel, was
chosen by his CACDC peers to receive the
2009 Team Member of the Year.
ADA Daniel is deserving of this award due
to his active participation during weekly case
reviews and his interaction with investigators
prior to cases being filed with the District
Attorney’s Office.
ADA Rick Daniel has been with the Denton
County District Attorney’s Office since 1995
and has been the Chief Felony Prosecutor of
the Child Abuse Unit since 2007. CACDC
assists CPS and local law enforcement agencies
in investigating child abuse cases, which
are then filed by law enforcement with the
District Attorney’s Office and assigned to
ADA Daniel and the other prosecutors in the
Child Abuse Unit.
Congratulations Rick!
