Adjudication Team
Chief Judge
Stan Schoonover has served for 15 seasons as the founding
conductor of the Fairfax Wind Symphony. He retired after thirty-two
years of service to education, including eleven as Fairfax County Music
Supervisor. His ensembles have appeared at two Mid-West Clinics, the
National Concert Band Festival, and thirteen VMEA Conferences. He
is an Educational Consultant for Music for All, and a Coordinator of
the MFA National Concert Band Festival.Mr. Schoonover is a PastPresident of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, a
recipient of multiple Citation of Excellence awards from the NBA, the
2006 VMEA Outstanding Administrator Award, and the 2012 VBODA Philip J. Fuller
Award for sustained musical excellence. He is an elected member of the American
Bandmasters Association.
Music Team
George Boulden holds the rank of Associate Professor of Music
and is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky,
where he serves as the conductor of the Symphony Band. Additionally,
he teaches conducting, music technology, and supervises student
teachers. Previously, George taught for nine years in the public schools
of South Carolina and Florida, and was the recipient of the ASBDAStanbury Award as the outstanding young band director in Florida and- the Southeastern region of the United States. In 2011 George was
selected as the KMEA College/University Teacher of the Year. Mr.
Boulden holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from
the University of Kentucky and a Master of Music Education degree
from the University of South Carolina. While on a sabbatical during 2005-06, George served
as a doctoral teaching assistant with the University Bands at the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign, and completed coursework for the doctorate in music education (ABD).
Jay Kennedy is Vice President for Academic Affairs and Vice
Provost at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He received the
PhD from Boston College and Master and Bachelor of Music
Education degrees from Northwestern University. Jay is an
adjudicator for marching band, drum corps, and indoor percussion
competitions, has been brass arranger and program coordinator
for Boston Crusaders, and composed the themes for the Drum
Corps International broadcasts. He was elected to the DCI Hall of Fame in 2007 for
longtime contributions as an adjudicator, judge administrator, arranger, and composer. Jay
has composed music for hundreds of television commercials and his music has been heard
in feature films, including Wayne’s World, Electric Horseman, and Lethal Weapon 2. He was a
Grammy Award finalist in 2002 for arrangements on Virtuosi by Gary Burton and Makoto
Ozone. His published compositions include works for concert band, percussion ensemble,
and marching band.
Music Team
Mike Rubino The Live Oak High School marching band from
Morgan Hill, California, under the direction of Mike Rubino, was the
champion of the first Marching Bands of America National
Championship in 1976. Now retired from Live Oak, Mr. Rubino is an
adjudicator for Bands of America, as well as for Drum Corps
International. In the area of education, Mr. Rubino's career has
spanned from a start-up, award-winning high school music program
to cultural music exchanges exposing over 800 students to diverse
cultures, to elementary music education. As a composer and arranger,
Mr. Rubino has prepared more than 100 arrangements and original
compositions. A tireless advocate for music education, Mr. Rubino has designed and
implemented an elementary music program that has proven to be highly successful in
teaching 4th through 6th grade students the basic elements of music. Currently, every
elementary student in the Morgan Hill Unified School District is exposed to music through
his efforts.
Dean Westman is the Performing Arts Department Chair and
Orchestra Director at Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. He
started the Avon Orchestra program in 2007 with 40 pioneering 6th
grade beginners. Over the past 6 years, the Avon Orchestra has
grown to over 700 students grades 6 through 12. Mr. Westman also
serves as a Program Coordinator for the 3-time Bands of America
Grand National Champion Avon High School Marching Black and
Gold. He served as Director of Bands at Stephen F. Austin High
School in Sugar Land, Texas when the band placed 5th at the 2002
Bands of America Grand National Championships and 4th at the 2004
Bands of America Grand National Championships. Dean’s concert ensembles at SFA have
performed at Carnegie Hall, the Moores Opera House, the Meyerson, and the prestigious
Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Westman served as Brass Caption Head for the ten-time Drum
Corps International World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003 and 2004. He
spent seven years as a brass arranger and instructor for the six-time Drum Corps
International World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps. Dean taught
on the brass staff for the seven-time Drum Corps International World Champion Cavaliers
Drum and Bugle Corps, and was the Brass Caption Head during the Cavaliers 1995 DCI
World Championship season. He was a music consultant for Carolina Crown in 2007-09.
Westman was the Brass Arranger and Program Coordinator for the Troopers Drum and
Bugle Corps, leading America’s Corps to their first DCI Finals appearance in 23 years in
2009Westman currently serves as Program Coordinator for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle
Corps.
Visual Team
Kyle Miller works at Paradise Professional Development School, in
Las Vegas, Nevada, Kyle Miller teaches in a general education
classroom. Additionally he serves as a member of the UNLV
Education Cadre, the Community Partnership program, and
coordinates school programs with Nevada Ballet and the Olympic
Rugby committee. Recently he earned his fellowship with the
National Writing Project and is a member of the Southern Nevada
Writing Project. Experiencing performing arts as a marching member,
teacher, designer and adjudicator has enriched his appreciation of
various pageantry disciplines. As a member of his father's high school band, he competed in
multiple MBA/BOA events. Later he studied music at University of Iowa and performed
with Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps. Continuing to expand his pageantry involvement
he consults, designs, judges and clinics with schools nationwide. He greatly values his
opportunity to judge for Winter Guard International, Midwest Judges Guild, Bands of
America/Music for All and Drum Corps International for over 10 years. Most recently, he
judged the 2013 Thailand Marching Band International Contest as well as contests for Drum
Corps Japan and Drum Corps Europe.
Jonathan Vanderkolff (Visual Designer, Stage Director,
Choreography, Composer) is an original member of the creative team
and stage director for Blast!, recipient of the 2001 Tony award for Best
Theatrical Event and nominated for the 2002 National Theatre awards
for Best Musical. Jonathan, received an Emmy Award for the PBS
broadcast of Blast!. He was also nominated for the 2002 Tony Award
and 2002 National Broadway Theatre Award in Choreography.
Jonathan’s other theatre credits include: Shockwave, Brass Theatre,
Cyberjam and MIX. Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, he has been the visual designer for
many award-winning organizations, including the Bluecoats, Star of Indiana, Madison Scouts,
Santa Clara Vanguard Winterguard and the Emerald Marquis Winterguard. Jonathan
graduated with an honors degree in music theory from the New England Conservatory in
Boston.
Percussion Specialist
Colin McNutt currently serves as the Percussion Caption Supervisor
and Battery Percussion Arranger for The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps,
winners of the 2013 DCI Fred Sanford Percussion Trophy. There's
nothing more fulfilling to Colin than running into former students who
have made great lives for themselves. Knowing he could have played a
small part in their success and happiness keeps the 37-year-old drummer
motivated, sharing his talents and skills with young performers across the
country. McNutt has served as the Cadets Percussion Caption Supervisor
for a little more than two years, handling a considerable portion of the
daily instruction of the section. He came to the Cadets with a lengthy marching and drum
corps resume, including his most recent job as Director of Percussion and Arranger for the
Madison Scouts of Madison, Wisconsin McNutt has a strong history in percussion
instruction. He arranged music and instructed for Star of Indiana, Glassmen, and the
Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. He also took his talents to the stage, writing and teaching
for the popular production "Blast!"
Colorguard Specialist
Scott Beck has been involved with the color guard activity for many
decades. He marched in the Miller’s Blackhawk Winter Guard, along
with the Suncoast Sound and Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. After
marching, Scott went on to work with many high school and
independent winter guards. Some of these groups include: Lassiter
High School, Pope High School, John Overton High School and JSU
Center Stage. Scott is currently the color guard Caption Head for Spirit
of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps and Western Carolina, Pride of the
Mountains Marching Band. He started judging for WGI in 2010 as an equipment judge.
Scott resides in Pennsylvania where he teaches elementary school.
Drum Major Specialist
Koji Mori currently serves as the Assistant Director of Bands at
Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia. He was previously the
Assistant Band Director at Daniell Middle School. Mr. Mori graduated
with his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Columbus State University
in Columbus, Georgia and is currently pursuing his Masters in Music
Education from the University of Georgia. Mr. Mori was an active
performer in Drum Corps International as a member of the Phantom
Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps for the 2008 & 2009 seasons. In 2008,
he was named Assistant Conductor of the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps and helped
the corps achieve its first stand-alone world championship title. Mr. Mori was named Principal
Conductor of the Phantom Regiment in 2009 and had the opportunity of conducting a joint
venture between the Phantom Regiment and the internationally renown brass quintet, the
Boston Brass. In the summer of 2010, Mr. Mori was chosen as a Conducting Fellow at the
University of South Carolina’s Conductors Institute, working with professional musicians and
conducting an array of orchestral literature for string, chamber, and symphony orchestra. He is
currently on staff with the Bands of America National Drum Major Institute and is an active
adjudicator of marching band competitions throughout the southeast. His professional
affiliations include: National Association for Music Education, Georgia Music Educators
Association, Music for All, and Drum Corps International. Mr. Mori resides in Kennesaw with
his lovely wife Brittany, who also teaches band.
