Medcen Happenings
SUMMER 2011
A message from the
president
For most of us it’s a lot easier to ask questions than it
is to answer them.
But in this edition of Medcen Happenings, quite the
opposite is true.
Our editorial team began each of these interviews with
a straightforward, five word question: How has cancer
touched you?
The answers, as varied as snowflakes, all reflect
personal and touching involvements. What connects
them, however, is each responder has taken inspiration
from their personal experiences to become a leader in
the Fund-Raising Campaign for the Comprehensive
Cancer & Research Institute at the Medical Center of
Central Georgia. Our patients, their families, our local
community and the state are all the better because of
the answers.
We are so proud of our donor and volunteer leaders
because without them this campaign would never be
possible much less successful.
Philanthropic leadership assumes many different
forms and styles; yet, it is unified by a shared vision
and a committed discipline to do what needs to be
done to make that vision a reality.
As you will read in the following pages that which
motivates our leaders varies from expertise, to
altruism, to sound business, to personal tributes, to
collegial experiences, to divine inspiration, to countless
permutations of some and all of the above. Whatever
the motivators, our leaders are always in the throes of
www.medcenfoundation.org what’s happening. They are not looking on from afar. They
are involved and they want to tell everyone who will listen
how and why they are involved. Hence, those who tell
their stories in this edition are making the Comprehensive
Cancer & Research Institute happen!
All the leaders featured understand how philanthropy
impacts lives now and for generations to come. They
identify ways to move around obstacles such as our
current economic climate. They have responded by
being even more generous, more committed and more
innovative, while always remaining focused on the
larger strategic plan of our Healthcare Community and
our Hospital-- to provide world class cancer care and
research close to home.
Our patients will no longer be required to travel long
distances to receive cancer treatments, access the most
current technologies or utilize research protocols.
Our leaders do not shy away from answering questions
and they enjoy telling their stories. They are good
communicators and great ambassadors. We are ever so
grateful for their commitment to this cause.
I invite you to read their responses and to be motivated by
their examples. I also reach out to ask: How has cancer
touched your life? I hope your answers will motivate you
to become philanthropic leaders as well.

The
Auxiliary
For over thirty years our amazing auxiliary has cared for
patients and families dealing with cancer. In the early
1980’s they raised the funds needed to build a Love and
Laughter Room, which is located on the 9th floor as part
of our Cancer Life Center. This room is a beautiful place for
families and friends to gather while caring for their loved
one.
In March of this year, the Auxiliary demonstrated their
desire to once again change lives by pledging $100,000
to the Comprehensive Cancer & Research Institute
capital campaign. Matilda Walker, current President of
the Auxiliary states “There’s not a one of us volunteers
who has not been touched by cancer. We really wanted
to be involved in ensuring this Comprehensive Cancer &
Research Institute becomes a reality for the communities
and patients we serve.”
While volunteers can be traced back to the opening of
the Medical Center in 1895 (then known as The Macon
Hospital), the Auxiliary organization began in 1962.
Hundreds of volunteers donating thousands of hours each
year make our community hospital the best. 4

Changing Lives Through
Advancing Cancer Care
By:Ellen terrell
On the floors, they give of their time and talents bringing
comfort and companionship to our patients while also
assisting hospital personnel with many non-clinical duties. One might wonder how they have also been able to donate
close to $2 million to ensure world-class care is provided
to the citizens of central Georgia. This began with the Pink
Pinafore Gift Shop which opened in 1963 and remained in
operation for 25 years. When the gift shop closed in 1988,
the Auxiliary took the items “on the road” via a gift cart
service which you will see up and down the hallways of the
hospital carrying snacks and small gift items to employees
and visitors alike. The Auxiliary also raises funds through
periodic uniform sales which they host at the hospital, and
last but not least, a long time tradition is oversight of the
program which takes our newborn babies first photo. On behalf of everyone in this community who has been
touched by the Auxiliary’s generosity and those who will
be touched by the Comprehensive Cancer & Research
Institute, we thank our auxilians for their service to the
Medical Center of Central Georgia and for their generous
gift to this project.
SUMMER 2011
John Draughon
Donates Major Gift to New Comprehensive Cancer & Research Institute
By: Debbie Schuchmann
Sell & Melton, L.L.P. was formed in 1980
from the merger of two firms whose
histories date back as far as the 1930’s
and 1950’s, respectively. A common thread
running in their predecessor organizations
and in the current firm is a culture of
community involvement and philanthropy.
As such, because The Medical Center of
Central Georgia is the only not-for-profit
community hospital in Macon, over the
years Sell & Melton has chosen to support
several campaigns, thus ensuring top
quality healthcare is available to all patients
and families. The many contributions from
Sell & Melton range from smaller gifts
made in honor of an employee’s new child
to larger gifts designated for a particular
building campaign.
Visiting with this impressive group of
leaders, which included Mitchel P. House,
Jr., Ed S. Sell, III, John A. Draughon, Sr.,
R. Chix Miller, Julia H. Magda, Blake E.
Lisenby, and Aimee J. Hall (Jefferey B.
Hanson and Jon R. Hawk were unable to
attend), you could sense their sincerity and
concern about healthcare in Central and
South Georgia. Several of them were born
at The Medical Center, or have children
who were born at The Medical Center, and
all are familiar with the devastating effects
of a cancer diagnosis. For one it was a
first wife who had died from colon and
liver cancer and a father-in-law who died
of the same cancers. For another it was a
young client who had fought a long battle
with breast cancer. As each one present
reflected on family and friends who had or
have cancer, - a stillness seemed to come
over the room.
The conversation then took a brighter
turn as they began discussing the many
reasons they chose to give a major gift to
support the new Comprehensive Cancer
& Research Institute (CCRI). Hope was a
www.medcenfoundation.org driving force behind their decision; hope
that the CCRI will become a destination
for cancer treatment and even develop
a major league reputation such as the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota or
even the legendary Packers in tiny Green
Bay, Michigan (both “major league”
organizations found in smaller cities).
While discussing the magnitude of this
effort, CCRI’s - affiliation with the University
of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) was
mentioned. Having a relationship with
UAB presents incredible advantages for
our patients and their families. Increased
access to clinical trials and second
opinions will be a tremendous boost to
the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Physicians and medical students alike will
have a direct line to the research being
conducted at UAB, which receives over
$150 million a year for research alone. This
level of research is far and above anything
The Medical Center has had in the past.
These attorneys all expressed a hope and
expectation for the future and economic
growth in our community. It’s a well known
fact that companies view the availability of
quality healthcare as a critical factor when
assessing communities for relocation and
expansion opportunities. Just by virtue
of adding new programs and services,
CCRI will attract the best and brightest
physicians, nurses, techs, and all other
necessary support staff, resulting in –
the “best and the brightest times three”
according to Ed Sell, III, who pointed out
the fact that a hospital is open 24/7/365,
necessitating three shifts of employees.
Additionally, patients undergoing cancer
care may have months of treatments
and procedures; their families and loved
ones will be with them and will eat at
our restaurants, purchase gas, use our
pharmacies, and stay in our hotels. This
activity can only lead to a positive impact
on our economy while we strive for
positive outcomes in cancer diagnosis and
treatment at CCRI.
Asked if there were anything else they would
like to say to other businesses considering
making a gift to the Comprehensive Cancer
& Research Institute, John Draughon, who
is serving his ninth year on the Board of
Trustees of the Medcen Foundation, stated
he would like to remind others of the real
value of philanthropic dollars. He went
on to explain that each dollar donated is
equal to twenty dollars saved in providing
goods and services. In other words, at a
5% operating margin, for the hospital to
net $1 million, its professionals would have
to deliver $20 million in services.
Our visit ended with the team expressing
their overwhelming trust in The Medical
Center as an anchor in our community.
They agreed it provides excellent
healthcare and echoed their commitment
to making it a premier hospital in the state
and the country.
Sincere thanks go to this unique group of
leaders at Sell & Melton for their gift and
for their belief in The Medical Center to
move forward even in the tough times. Their gift will make a huge impact on
many patients and families served in the
new Comprehensive Cancer & Research
Institute.
Please consider making your own
gift to the Comprehensive Cancer &
Research Institute.

cutting-edge treatments will be a tremendous
benefit to those suffering with cancer. Not
only from the patient and family perspective,
but from a business perspective as well.”
Bright, energetic, focused ~ just a few words
which come to mind when thinking about
Robert C. Betzel, President & CEO and his
brother, Brian Betzel, Executive Vice President
of Sales and Marketing of their company,
Infinity Network Solutions, Inc. They are our
newest addition to the Business & Corporate
Honor Roll, the giving society which
recognizes those businesses who partner with
the Medical Center of Central Georgia with a
generous gift of $10,000, $25,000, or $50,000.
Other than his first child being born at the
Medical Center, one of Robert (Rob) Betzel’s
first encounters with the Medical Center
was as a guest at one of the Business &
Corporate Roundtables. Don Faulk, CEO of
Central Georgia Health Systems and The
Medical Center of Central Georgia spoke to
area leaders about the state of healthcare
at national and local levels. He also gave an
overview of the Hospital’s strategic plan and
top priorities. The meeting Rob attended
included information about plans for the
new Comprehensive Cancer & Research
Institute. As Rob listened intently to these
plans, you could see the light go on as he
connected the dots between the importance
of highly advanced cancer care and the major
economic significance it will bring.

Rob Betzel and
Brian Betzel
After a follow-up meeting with Rob, he
asked for more information regarding the
new facility. One just knew he was ready to
invest in something of this magnitude and
breadth. However, he wasn’t going to make
any commitments on behalf of his business
until meeting with his brother, Brian. Although
the two brothers don’t look too much alike,
they talk and sound very much alike and most
importantly, as business partners, they share a
vision and set of values for their business and
for the communities where they work.
This is where the Cancer Institute comes
into play. Committed to building a company
culture which supports the community in
which they live, work, and play, Rob and Brian
are excited about helping the Medical Center,
which will, according to Rob, “have an effect
on their family, their employees, and on the
local economy.” As they were sharing with me
their company philosophy and the benefits of
this alliance, they reflected on their employees,
some of whom have battled cancer. “We’ve
had employees who had to take off work for
months for treatments.” explains Rob, “Brian
and I have lived and breathed the acute stress
associated with often times, rigorous cancer
treatment plans. To have a facility in our own
community which can provide top quality,
So what is Infinity Network Solutions, Inc. and
what do they do? Rob started the business in
January 2000 in Milledgeville and Brian came
on board in August 2001 after graduating from
The University of Georgia. What they do, to
put it quite simply, is to offer full service IT
support. They design, install, and maintain
computer network systems for businesses. Their designs incorporate the need for
business continuity and a recovery process
for the organizations they serve. Rob and
Brian already have their 2012 plans in place
and continually look for ways to improve. When asked about their long-term goals, they
agreed it is to be the best IT organization in
Central Georgia. However, they were quick
to clarify they want to be the best for the
community, not just for themselves! How
refreshing is that?!
When asked what they would say to other local
and regional business leaders considering
making a gift to the Comprehensive Cancer
& Research Institute, the response from Rob
was instantaneous, “We’re responsible for our
own economic development. This Cancer
Center will have a huge impact on you, your
family, your employees ~ direct or indirect, I
feel strongly it will have a huge impact.”

SUMMER 2011
CEO Roundtable:
The Business Community, the
Medical Center of Central
Georgia, & Cancer Care
By: Debbie Schuchmann
Think the Business Community, the Medical Center of Central
Georgia and Cancer Care don’t go together? Think again. According to the American Cancer Society, over 40,000 Georgians
will be newly diagnosed with Cancer this calendar year. Most
cancer therapies require multiple, consecutive days of treatment. Cancer patients usually require six to eight consecutive weeks of
radiation and/or chemotherapy. These treatments are emotionally
and physically taxing, making traveling distances and multiple
trips difficult. Standing among almost fifty business leaders,
including Mayor Robert Reichert, and welcoming them to our
most recent Business & Corporate Roundtable held on Tuesday,
August 30, 2011, it became very clear how business, the Hospital
and Cancer Care connect.
Attendees at the luncheon, featuring Don Faulk, CEO, Central
Georgia Health Systems and The Medical Center of Central
Georgia, and guest speaker, Warren Smedley, Executive Director,
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Cancer Care Network,
engaged in conversations about the availability of Cancer Care.
Most of the attendees had experienced friends and employees
undergoing cancer treatments and were well aware of the time out
of work and distress associated with their care. After Mr. Faulk welcomed the group and reiterated the hospital’s
decision to build a Comprehensive Cancer & Research Institute,
he introduced Mr. Smedley who provided an excellent overview
of the many benefits associated with the recently announced
formal affiliation between UAB and The Medical Center of Central
Georgia.
Mr. Smedley first addressed the question many have asked: Why
UAB? UAB has a 40 year history as a Comprehensive Cancer
Center. Since 1970, UAB has been Alabama’s primary clinical,
academic, and research center for cancer services. Almost
40 years ago,in 1972, the National Cancer Institute designated
UAB as one of the original 8 NCI designated Comprehensive
Cancer Centers. UAB is the only NCI designated Comprehensive
Cancer Center in the heart of the Deep South including Alabama,
Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina.
UAB has over 350 faculty members conducting research and
providing comprehensive cancer care, each on specific diseases. UAB receives over $150M in annual research funding.
www.medcenfoundation.org Mr. Smedley went on to explain the purpose of the affiliation is
to pursue high quality patient outcomes, promote optimal patient
satisfaction, to share best practices in cancer care, to collaborate
on cancer research and clinical trials, to promote early detection
and treatment and to keep patients close to home. It’s not hard to
figure out this partnership is a giant step for The Medical Center
and will have a vast impact on the local and regional economy as
patients will be able to access top quality first and second line
cancer care and therapies without having to travel long distances
separating them from family, work, and home.
If you’re still contemplating how the business community and
the community hospital connect, please keep in mind the quality
and availability of medical care are consistently among the top
reasons people rank a community as a desirable place to live. Our
business leaders know this to be true and many already support
The Medical Center through their membership in the Business &
Corporate Honor Roll, Medcen’s corporate giving society. They
understand the vital link between the success of their businesses
and having a healthy community hospital, one which continuously
strives to offer the best patient and family care possible.
Please contact Debbie Schuchmann at 478/633-6151 or
[email protected] for more information about
how your business can get involved with supporting the new
Comprehensive Cancer & Research Institute of the Medical
Center of Central Georgia.

H.E.A.T.
Supports Cancer Care
Close to Home and Much
More. By: Ellen Terrell
Last fall the Medical Center’s employee giving program, H.E.A.T. (Healthcare Employees
Achieving Tomorrow), raised over $1.6 million in its tri-annual campaign. $300,000 of
those funds have been pledged to the Comprehensive Cancer & Research Institute.
Another portion of the funds raised through H.E.A.T. helps support local charities and
smaller hospital projects each year through a grant process. Any healthcare related,
not-for-profit agency can submit a grant application to the H.E.A.T. Trust Fund. As
you look through the list of grant awards below, you will notice that many of these are
focused on cancer care. Linda Clay, chair of the HEAT Committee states, “Fighting the
disease of cancer, which has taken so many of our friends and family, is the reason the
HEAT Trust Fund supports the organizations battling this horrible disease.”
I am so proud to know that my few dollars
along with those of other HEAT members have
purchased a car seat that saved a baby’s life,
made possible a class that steered a teenager
back to school, and offered special pillows
to help an asthmatic child sleep easier. I look
around CGHS and see HEAT projects in so
many places, a nursery expansion, a hospice
and so much more. It is exciting to know that I
have made a difference.

The Young Professional NetworK
The Young Professional Network of The Greater Macon Chamber
of Commerce recently hosted an After Hours Event at The Children’s
Hospital at The Medical Center of Central Georgia. The event was
sponsored by Logan Persons Weaver, Butler Automotive Group, The
Trading Post and Mid Georgia Sales. There were over 50 people in
attendance to learn more about The Children’s Hospital and the direction
in which it is headed.
Don Faulk welcomed everyone and introduced Dr. Josh Glenn, one of
the newest Pediatric Surgeons. Dr. Glenn shared the amazing story of
Amare Walker. Early into her pregnancy, with Amare, Tyricia Walker, of
Macon, was sent to Dr. Mark Boddy, a fetal and maternal perinatologist
who specializes in high-risk pregnancy. Her situation was dire – the baby
maturing inside of her was growing, but with a large tumor the size of
his head attached to his neck. Because the tumor was growing along
with the baby, at 37 weeks, Tyricia delivered by cesarean section. With
baby and mother still attached via umbilical cord, an ex utero intrapartum
treatment (EXIT) procedure was performed by a team of subspecialists.
(Physicians that made up the team include ENT physicians, pediatric
surgeons, a neonatologist, perinatologist and pediatric radiologist.)
Immediately the baby had to have his airway secured because the
tumor was constricting his ability to breath. The baby was moved to the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital at The Medical
Center of Central Georgia to be stabilized. Within two days, pediatric
12
Medcen Happenings
surgeons removed the 13-ounce
tumor. Subsequent surgeries
have also been performed. Had
it not been for the expertise
of these subspecialists and
the services provided by The
Children’s Hospital and Women’s
Services at The Medical Center
of Central Georgia, Ms. Walker
and her baby, Amare, would have had to travel to hospitals in Boston or
Philadelphia for these complicated procedures. To share the ending of
this miraculous story, Amare was discharged home with mom and dad
on October 5th!
After Dr. Glenn shared the story of Amare, Nikki Paulk, Assistant Vice
President of Women’s and Children’s Services gave an update on The
Children’s Hospital. At the end of the event, guests were offered tours of
The Children’s Hospital, including our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, our
newly expanded Pediatric Critical Care Unit, and our General Pediatric
Unit. Many did take the opportunity to see firsthand what an amazing,
world class facility we have right here in our local community! It was a
wonderful event that helped build a bridge between local businesses and
The Children’s Hospital.

Planned Giving:
Cambridge Courtyard Garden
at Carlyle Place Becomes a Family Legacy
By: Debbie Schuchmann
It’s easy sometimes to feel as if the term “legacy” is overused or
perhaps it seems a bit formal, but standing in the middle of a newly
landscaped garden with four generations of the same family brings the
term “legacy” to life. Have you thought of making a family legacy, one
which would serve others for generations to come? Of course there
are many ways to generate a family legacy. Some can be made to
have an immediate impact while others can be planned far in advance
through estate or planned giving. Both are vital to ensuring high quality
healthcare is available to all now and in the future. The recent legacy gift was one of an immediate nature. An investment
was made to give the Cambridge Courtyard Garden a “facelift.” There
are several means of designing a legacy gift for the Comprehensive
Cancer & Research Institute such as through your will, a trust, life
insurance policy, or by funding a life-income gift, such as a charitable
gift annuity. Just like planning a beautiful garden, you have to begin
long before planting season to know which plants you want to grow.
So it is with planning a deferred gift, a signature gift in which you add
stability and long-term funding to the CCRI (or any other service such
as Carlyle Place, The Children’s Hospital, the Luce Heart Institute, or
Pine Point Hospice of Central Georgia).
Seeing a dream turn to reality is a real privilege. Here is just a peek into
the events which led to the Cambridge Court Garden Legacy. Several
months ago, Ashley Coplan, granddaughter of Mrs. Sybil Eastburn,
resident at Carlyle Place, contacted Medcen Foundation asking if she
could make a donation to Cambridge Court Courtyard in order to add
some new plants and outdoor furniture and accessories. Happy to help her, we immediately met at the small garden connected to
Cambridge Court to begin planning for its revitalization. While walking
along a winding path, Ashley shared with me how she used to visit
her grandfather, Mr. Ray Eastburn, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s
disease, and she would lead him outside to this small garden where he
enjoyed the outdoors. The garden itself was nothing spectacular, but
it became very special to a granddaughter and her grandfather. Other
www.medcenfoundation.org Alzheimer’s patients would go too and soon they would look forward to
Ashley’s visits as well.
Mr. Eastburn is now deceased, but Ashley continues to visit her
grandmother. She became aware that the garden is in full view from her
grandmother’s room and she remembered how much the time spent
outdoors meant to her grandfather and the other residents. These fond
memories prompted her to want to ensure it became a place of rest,
peace, and pleasure for others in the future.
That she has done. With the help of her good friend, Wimberly
Treadwell, a licensed landscape architect, a plan was developed
and the actual planting was installed this past summer. The result
was a beautiful, peaceful garden planned especially for Alzheimer’s
patients. Filled with bright flowering plants, trees and bushes, it is
now a thriving garden. A beautiful urn turned into a fountain presides
in the center island, lantana attracts butterflies around the periphery,
and birdfeeders attract cardinals and chickadees. Naturally, there is
seating and a glider for residents; there are even planters available for
those residents who still like to plant for seasonal color.
It was a very proud moment for the family when longtime friend and
minister, Dr. Donald Key, closed the ceremony with a blessing on the
garden. Mrs. Eastburn can now look out on the garden, think of her
beloved husband and family, and know in her heart countless others
will enjoy walking the same shaded pathway, listening to peaceful
sounds of water softly gurgling, and smelling the blooms of the season.
