WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY FUND?
The Community Fund, the Foundation’s only
unrestricted fund, is an endowment that enables the
Walker Area Community Foundation to respond
strategically to community issues as they arise. Based
on our knowledge and research, the Community Fund
supports a wide variety of subject areas and
organizations through a competitive grants process
and other special initiatives.
The year 2013 marked our 18th year as a
Community Foundation. Eighteen years of gathering
people, funds and organizations together; eighteen
years of growing through prudent management and
collaborations with other agencies; and, eighteen
years of grantmaking to respond to the most pressing
needs of the community.
In 1995, following a suggestion from John T. Oliver,
Jr., Pat Willingham and the Community Health
Systems Board set aside $6 million in proceeds from
the sale of the Walker Regional
Medical Center to begin the
endowment for the Walker Area
Community Foundation. This
donation has served as
a nucleus for funding worthy
causes that might otherwise go
lacking.
Other community leaders involved
in the formation of the foundation
were the late J. George Mitnick and
Larry Drummond. Together, Oliver,
Willingham, Mitnick and Drummond

created a Foundation that serves as a cornerstone on
which solutions to our community’s greatest problems
are built.
Since 1995, the Community Foundation has grown
from the original $6 million to more than $24 million
in assets due to the wise investments by the estate
managers selected by the Board of Directors and the
purchase and renovation of the Bankhead House &
Heritage Center, but mostly because of the
faithfulness of our donors.
The coming years are times of even greater promise
and the Community Fund will be the catalyst for real
community change. If you have a desire to be part of
the future of Walker County, please call 302-0001,
visit our website at www.wacf.org or come by the
Foundation’s office at 611 8th Avenue, Jasper,
Alabama.

To Give and to Receive
This partnership with Walker County has made me a better person
because I am a man with purpose and desire to make a difference. I’ve
had so many emotional highs and lows throughout this experience,
which is just… weird, because I don’t get emotional about anything. And
it wasn’t until I was several weeks in that I realized the reason I was so
affected by the work I was doing was because I rediscovered what
passion was. It sounds overly cliché, however, I do think that everyone
loses sight of themselves at times and need a little direction to get back
on track.
My direction came in the form of the people that surrounded me.
There are some people that just know that they’re doing what they’re
supposed to be doing and they provided me with much needed
perspective on challenges that I’ve faced ever since I entered college –
problems that are often times so distracting that I lose all focus, and
seemingly, over the course of my eighteen years on this Earth, I’d lost
sight of what truly makes me happy. But, I rediscovered it this summer.
I perform community service with a heart, rather than with an
insincere assumption that I’m doing it simply because it’s the right
thing to do. You get out of the experience what you put into it. The
internship is so much more than serving a struggling community – it’s
about learning where you stand in this world when you’re placed
outside your comfort zone. You discover so much about yourself and
you learn that you can’t be prepared for everything. There are so
many unadvertised gems to this experience that are best served in
maintaining a secret – as it makes the discovery of them so much
worthwhile. However, the only way to even begin the process of
uncovering them is by making the decision to dedicate eight weeks
of your life to the unpredictable.

WHAT ARE COMPONENT FUNDS?
Component funds are
designed for donors who
endow their passion to
provide endless support to
charitable causes they hold
dear.
Component funds allow an
advisory committee to focus
on the charitable needs
and leave the
administrative tasks to the Foundation.
These funds are a permanent source of
community capital, helping the Foundation
do good work today and far into the future.
There are so many success stories behind
each fund, that we cannot fit them all on this
page but as you will see, there are business
funds, family funds and organizational
funds. Each with its own purpose and
history, but all of them gaining strength from
being managed together. Anyone can
donate to any fund at any time.
Bankhead Fund was started by Walter
Will Bankhead and has a long history of
providing general philanthropic dollars for
our nonprofits.
Barbara Drummond Thorne Fund,
given by her estate, offers financial aid to
the organizations that were closest to her
heart.
Drummond Company, Inc. (DCI)
Fund provides aid first to present and
retired employees of Drummond Company
who suffered damage because of the April
27, 2011 tornados.

To the Walker Area Community Foundation:
There is so much to learn from giving. The term “It is better to give
than to receive” means more after you lose someone in your family
who is a giver. Who can take her place? Well, being on the receiving
end, it is a hard act to follow. There is so much displacement that
happens every day, all around us. I will always remember my nephew
who received a fruit cake from Mr. Drummond when he lost his house
from the April 27th tornado and he has mentioned numerous times that
it was the best fruitcake he ever had. The long lapses in thought and
despair carries a person through hunger they do not even realize until
the need is taken away by a gift.
How do you say thank you to foundations who care enough to help
put lives back together? Only God can appropriately repay. It has
taught me that while I could not possibly give millions, I can manage to
give a little here and a little there. If we all stand together to work with
each other, a solid foundation will form in order to build.
When someone gives me something, I think - WOW, they love me
this much - whatever or whoever it is. After attending your Annual
Luncheon and seeing the “Giving” video I realized that we must open
our eyes… that whether anyone else recognizes it or not, there is
something we all can do to pull together and help each other in our
little communities. That is what it is all about.
I know that being from Cordova, much like everywhere, some have
no idea who their benefactors are but let me be at least one who has
seen the change, already for the better even though, at first it seemed a
lost cause. Thank you could never adequately cover your gracious
generosity toward us. So, I will just say this; bless you for your many
causes and cures. Good Job!

McDowell Farm
School at Camp
McDowell offers
hands-on, residential
farm education
focused on food,
sustainability and
the surrounding
ecosystem. The land is the
classroom, giving students the greatest opportunity to
learn about themselves and the environment. Things
are happening, crops are growing, animals are
feeding, and the Farm Schools offers a chance to
experience it all. (www.mcdowellfarmschool.com)
“Our grant, awarded to us by the Walker Area
Community Foundation, allowed the entire kindergarten
and second grade classes from West Jasper Elementary
School to come for a day trip to the farm. Anytime we
get funding to bring a school to the farm it is a gift, but
to bring a school in our own community to the farm is an
amazing experience for all of us. The generosity of the
Community Foundation has cemented a great
partnership between McDowell Farm School and West
Jasper Elementary School. “

Bankhead House & Heritage Center is owned and
operated by the Walker Area Community
Foundation. The mission of the Bankhead House &
Heritage Center is to be a place where people
from all walks of life whether residents, artists,
historians or tourists gather to experience a diverse
range of exhibits and events with a focus on art,
history, plays, concerts and culture showcasing our
community’s many talents, history and future. Built
in 1925, as the home of William Brockman
Bankhead, the 47th Speaker of the US House of
Representatives, the house has been lovingly
restored and in 2010 opened as a Heritage
Center, serving the Walker County area. It is open
to the
public and
admission is
FREE!
“The
Bankhead
House &
Heritage
Center is a
wonderful
asset for both the citizens of Walker
County and visitors to our area. Through the generosity
of an endowment from the Bankhead Fund, we not
only have the ability but the responsibility of providing
celebratory, cultured and educational opportunities for
all ages. One of our primary goals is to work hand in
hand with educational institutions in our area to
promote student exposure to the many aspects of their
heritage and exhibits they would not be able to
experience otherwise.
I feel that honoring, learning about and preserving our
past ensures a greater appreciation of our present and
future.”

FOR THE BENEFIT OF YOUR COMMUNITY.
FOR ALL TIME...
FOR ALL PEOPLE...
When I began my term as Chairman of the Walker Area Community Foundation three
years ago, I followed in the steps of Mr. John T. Oliver, with whom I have had the pleasure
of working for 35 years and who has done so much for our entire community. He and a
small group of people began with $6 million and built a strong foundation for our nonprofit
organizations and community. That original gift has now grown to nearly $24 million in
assets and will benefit our community forever and ever.
Because of the dedicated Board of Directors and staff, the Community Foundation has
grown financially but also in our ability to make change in the community. From educating
younger generations on the importance of giving back to their community to building an
appreciation for the heritage we can all be proud of, this Foundation is making a difference in Walker County.
I hope you enjoyed reading the letters from Cameron and Kathern. I think they are testaments to the impact the Foundation and
its staff have on both the nonprofit organizations we serve as well as those that give their charitable gifts to us. It is important to
us to be good stewards of the money entrusted to us by our donors and we appreciate the trust you place in us.
My term as Chairman has come to a close. It was the greatest honor I’ve had professionally. This Foundation does so much
good in the community and I have a tremendous amount of respect for the steps our Board has taken to plan for the future. You
will be hearing soon about Generation Walker: A Foundation for the Future, which is the Foundation’s strategic plan for the next
five years.
The Foundation is pleased to have Eddie Jackson serve as its third chairman and have the utmost confidence in his ability to lead
this us through the next three years of great initiatives and giving.
