But MCPc’s courses are far from remedial; MCP graduates earn a fully accredited, University of California approved high-school diploma. The MCP Community is thrilled to have finally found a home – in Scotts Valley, Calif. “We are so pleased to be part of this community,” said Jay Dunlap, Executive Director. “The local schools and businesses have been warm and welcoming. Scotts Valley clearly understands the value of education.” Monterey Coast Preparatory moved to Scotts Valley from Santa Cruz in August of 2014. Over the last three years, the school has realigned and strengthened its mission to provide college preparatory education to students who learn differently. The MCP program includes hands on projects, state approved curriculum, weekly teacher training on how to accommodate different learners, and on-going collaboration with Stanford University labs and research projects. “Before I came to MCP I was failing most of my classes. School was a dark and depressing place. At MCP I learn about how I learn and what I need to do to improve. Now my grades are mostly A’s and I plan to go to medical school after I graduate,” said Aziz Bhullar, a junior at MCP. This year at the new Scotts Valley site, students have enjoyed physical education at Siltanen Park, performed scenes from classical Greek and Roman plays at the Vine Hill Amphitheater, and developed video documentaries for US History. Students are currently engaged in an all-school effort to produce the play, “Shakespeare’s Star Wars,” under the expert guidance of veteran thespian, and MCP English teacher, Karin Babbitt. Dr. Rebecca Hoover, Director of Sciences and Math, has developed a humble, but comprehensive laboratory here in 12 / April 2015 / Scotts Valley Times www.tpgonlinedaily.com Scotts Valley. Currently, the biology class is using electrophoresis to strip and identify DNA. The science program is designed to develop meaningful connections between “textbook” concepts and their application in the real world. The Bay Area is a hotbed of genetics research. MCP is producing scientists by arming students with the skills required for work in the field. The Marine Science class conducted field research in Elkhorn Slough, collected and classified plankton from the Monterey Bay, and is currently using the Environ- mental Fluid Mechanics Lab at Stanford University to simulate Tsunamis and conduct other wave tank experiments. Classes at MCP are engaging, relevant and hands-on. The school community is kind and compassionate. “Our mission is to create a model for learner-centered education. Our program is effective for all types of learners, especially those that have struggled with learning in traditional school environments, because we maintain a laser-like focus on learning and continuous improvement,” said Kris Neustadter, Director of Student Services. MCP’s new location, near the boundary between two counties, means the school can better serve students from Santa Cruz County and from the Silicon Valley. Students who learn differently make the trip from Monterey, Menlo Park, and everywhere in between, so they can get the academic support they need to prepare for college and the social and emotional support they need to grow into successful adults. “What I like about MCP is the small classes and how much the teachers care about us,” said Kai Peters, MCP sixth grader. *MCP Casino Night Fundraiser April 25 7 - 10:30 p.m. Scotts Valley Community Center. He started out fixing friend’s motorcycles just for the fun of it. He would later start a successful mobile repair business working from home. When he soon found his driveway overflowing with motorcycles he finally decided it was time to open up his own shop. Ken has a genuine passion for what he does and it really shows. “I love turning wrenches”, says Ken. He says sometimes he’s having so much fun working that he almost forgets to stop and keep track of the hours he started and stopped. In addition to motorcycle repair, they also sell t-shirts, leather goods, helmets, jackets, gloves and motorcycle accessories. Ken and his family are long-time residents of Scotts Valley and their love for the community shows. In fact they recently held a BBQ fundraiser and were able to present Valley Churches United Missions with a check during the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
