GHS 2013-14 Annual Report - Greenwich Historical Society
Non-Profit Postage U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. 1776 Stamford, CT 39 Strickland Road Cos Cob, Connecticut 06807 2013–14 annual report if you live or work in greenwich, you have a stake in the greenwich historical society. Greenwich enjoys a truly colorful past. From its precarious position on the Connecticut frontier during the American Revolution to its later reputation as a Gilded Age enclave for the rich and infamous, our town has long been associated with well-known individuals and pivotal events in the arts, business, journalism and politics. The Historical Society contributes immeasurably to the cultural vitality of this unique community. We serve as your bridge from the past to the future by offering innovative programs, exhibitions and preservation initiatives. The Bush-Holley Historic Site, which boasts a bucolic period landscape, was home to one of the first American Impressionist art colonies and encompasses an extensive research library and archives chronicling all things Greenwich, the Vanderbilt Education Center and the 1805 Storehouse Gallery with rotating exhibitions and a museum shop. At the Historical Society, you can attend fascinating lectures, enjoy hands-on family and educational programs, walk back in time on docent-led tours of Bush-Holley House and be captivated by live storytelling programs. One visit and you’ll understand the value of supporting this invaluable Greenwich resource. For more information, call 203-869-6899 or visit www.greenwichhistory.org www.greenwichhistory.org Glimpses of the Past From the William B Finch Jr. Archives Letter from the Chairman and Executive Director The Greenwich Historical Society plays a crucial role in preserving the history of Greenwich and provides a broad spectrum of educational programs that delight, inform and connect people in meaningful ways to the social, architectural, economic and cultural heritage of our community. The Historical Society has implemented numerous initiatives and innovations to fulfill this mission and engage new audiences. We are increasingly employing digital technologies to both enhance the experience of participants in on-site programs and to deliver educational materials to those off-site. Examples include the following: • Mounting multimedia exhibitions in our Storehouse Gallery • Launching our new “Digital Archives,” which provides broad public access to our archival collections • Initiating the creation of online learning resources such as content designed for students’ tablets • Delivering historic photographs and feature articles through social media and our new online exhibition • Expanding the scope, content and distribution of publications such as our online newsletter on the cover Postcard: New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Bridge, Cos Cob, Conn., postcard, 1912 (Postcard Collection “Railroads”) Photo: Sound Beach station, circa 1880 (Photograph Collection “Transportation – Railroads – Sound Beach Station”) Painting: Elmer Livingston MacRae Schooner in the Ice, 1900 Oil on canvas Museum Purchase with funds from multiple donors These and all other images in the annual report are from the Greenwich Historical Society Collections Financial Highlights treasurer’s comments: Operating results for the fiscal year ended June 30 were essentially a breakeven. The balance sheet remains strong. The investment portfolio benefited from the strong stock market with a total return, including income and gains, of over $500,000. Based on recent trends, returns going forward may not achieve that performance. Our portfolio is managed by The Investment Fund For Foundations (TIFF), which has over $11 billion under management. Our continuing challenge is to provide the necessary funding for our wide range of preservation and education programs, bearing in mind that we receive no funding from the Town of Greenwich. We appreciate your past support and hope that you will continue to keep the Historical Society high on your list of priorities.— Bruce Dixon, Vice Chairman and Treasurer June 30, 2014 June 30, 2013 $623,148 $790,239 Tuition & Fees 60,147 61,600 Memberships 58,738 53,033 Rental Income 89,593 66,175 Special Events (net) 250,608 298,479 Return on Investments 108,614 87,258 19,074 11,535 304,688 179,124 1,514,610 1,547,443 Programs & Services 848,711 765,499 Unrestricted Funds Revenues Contributions & Grants Other Income Assets Released from Restricted Contributions & Grants Total Revenues & Assets Released Simultaneously, substantial progress was made in facilities and program planning for our Strickland Road campus, which will incorporate the Toby’s Tavern building, expansion of our archives and research library, and the ability to add to our on-site program capabilities. We now possess rich, accurate, authentic details about these important structures that will be preserved for all time. The Landmark Program will continue to encourage the preservation of Greenwich’s architectural heritage as an important element of our history and continuing quality of life. We also furthered our preservation initiatives with our biannual Preservation Awards and continued to reach out to the community through off-site lectures and partnership programs. Antiquarius Greenwich Historical Society’s Antiquarius 2013 a Resounding Success 2 3 4 1 Antiquarius is an annual series of holiday events and a major fundraiser for the Greenwich Historical Society. All proceeds go to support the Historical Society’s education and preservation activities and its stewardship of BushHolley Historic Site. Festivities began when, in recognition of their early and generous support, 150 individual and corporate patrons of Antiquarius 2013 were graciously feted at the home of Richard and Linda Breeden. A preview party at the Greenwich Winter Antiques Show followed in early December where guests were wowed with a “Meet Me at the Beverly Hills Hotel” theme along with performances by “Marilyn Monroe” and “Frank Sinatra” set in a re-creation of the Polo Lounge. Things kept rolling the following week, and despite a snowy first night, the Holiday Boutique offered elegant holiday shopping with over 30 exclusive specialty vendors. Author/designer Tom Scheerer signed books, and concert pianist Randall Atcheson entertained shoppers throughout the evening. Going out on a high note, Antiquarius 2013 offered an extraordinary House Tour. We are indebted to the five incredible homeowners who were kind enough to open their spectacular homes to the community in support of the Historical Society. Special thanks go to generous corporate sponsors David Ogilvy & Associates, Douglas VanderHorn Architects, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, Gabelli Funds, NEBCO Insurance Services and Northern Trust, and exclusive media sponsor Connecticut Cottages & Gardens. A salute to Horseneck Wines & Liquors, Broken Shed Vodka, Marcia Selden Catering and Meli Melo for providing festive food and libations throughout. 5 2 3 Preservation and Outreach 1. Vanderbilt to support creative programming and fresh interpretations of history, to fund the restoration and interpretation of Bush-Holley House and to sustain preservation initiatives. This year’s program to recognize lead donors to the Trust was chaired by Lynne Wheat and Robert Getz and took place on June 3, 2014, at Seven Bridges, a foundation created in 1993 by Richard McKenzie to support both established and emerging living artists and to promote their creativity. This very special group of donors enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres surrounded by Seven Bridges’ extraordinary collection of large-scale modernist and figurative paintings, art glass and sculptures. They were also treated to a private tour of the art glass collection led by Jim Schantz of Schantz Galleries. Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and NEBCO Insurance Services, LLC generously underwrote the entire event. Daniel In memory of Chandler Bates Chandler Bates joined the Board of Trustees in 1975, serving until 1983 and again from 1984 to 1992, at which time he was named an Honorary Trustee. He was a key player when the Archives was being built in 1986–1987 and was always willing to lend a helping hand in building or repairing anything that needed attention. Drawing upon both his long history in the New York publishing world and his love of sailing, he served as editor of the history of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, A Century of Sailing, 1889–1989. He also had a great sense of humor and a real love of history. — Davidde Strackbein 23 ANNUAL REPORT GREENWICH HISTORICAL SOCIETY DONORS DONORS In memory of Ed Bragg Ed Bragg was a long-time supporter, member of the Board and chair of the Development Committee, and an Advisory Council member. He was instrumental in saving and restoring the historic lighthouse on Great Captain’s Island through “Save the Light.” Together with his wife Margaret, he made possible the furnishing of the administrative offices in the Justus Luke Bush Storehouse in 1998. We will miss both his warm smile and his good counsel. — Debra Mecky 24 2013–14 David Scott Parker Architects, LLC Mrs. Karl M. Davies Mr. and Mrs. Robert J.
