Willow Philanthropy Report
2010-2011
Excellence • Education • Ethics • Ecology
OUR MISSION
The Willow School, a small, independent coeducational day school for students in
preschool through eighth grade, is committed to combining academic excellence and
the joy of learning and to experiencing the wonder of the natural world. Mastery of the
English language is an essential element in an integrated curriculum that helps students
comprehend the patterns
of how things are connected and prepares them
for all areas of their
secondary education.
The school is dedicated
to maintaining an
environment where
respect for the individual,
an outstanding faculty,
and an understanding of
place foster independent thinking, creativity, responsibility, and integrity. The Willow School
education enables children to develop an ethical approach to all relationships, to realize their
full potential, and to believe in their power to effect positive change.
“The parent connection for me is tremendous. There
hasn’t been a parent here that I haven’t liked. I hope
we never lose this connection.” – Parent
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD
Dear Willow School Community,
I am deeply moved by the tremendous support you have demonstrated for The Willow School and continue to
be inspired by your commitment to the unique things being done here. Through 100% participation in the
Annual Fund yet again, the students and parents, faculty and staff, members of the Board of Trustees and the
Advisory Council show an abiding conviction in our school mission and work. Especially in these times of economic uncertainty, each act of support is all the more
meaningful and appreciated. Thank you, sincerely, for
your generous contributions.
Most respectfully,
David Donovan
Chair, Board of Trustees
LETTER FROM
THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Families and Friends of Willow,
Once again, I am challenged to sufficiently express my gratitude for your continued generosity. This truly has
been a year where every gift counted! In an economically challenging year I am happy to report that Willow
exceeded our goals in two important areas: the Green Gala and the Annual Fund.
This past year was another remarkable success in fund raising and service to Willow. Thank you for the hours
of volunteer efforts given. Our success is due largely to your hard work and your dedication to The Willow
School. It is incredibly inspiring to attend Parent Association meetings and hear the variety of creative ideas
shared and even more amazing to see them actualized in our Green Gala and other annual events. Your
involvement in every aspect of the School helps to create this vibrant community.
I would like to point out a few new features of this report. You may note that we are calling this The
Philanthropy Report; we do so to more accurately recognize your generous philanthropy in so many forms.
Additionally, we are listing our leadership donors as well as those who have been donors for five years or more.
These consecutive year donors constitute The Willow Tree Society. Donors of gifts made to the Library and Gifts
in Kind are now listed specifically. Each of you has helped us carry out the mission of The Willow School, for
this we are sincerely grateful.
With appreciation,
Kate Burke Walsh
Head of School

WHY WE CHOSE WILLOW…
“Willow provides a space for kids to feel comfortable and take risks, like public speaking in
front of the whole school.” – Trustee
“When we came to Willow, we found that everybody was on the same page and shared the
same values.” – Parent
“I want my child to be a good person. Anybody can be successful if they are a good person,
and I feel they really foster this at Willow.” – Parent
“It’s not just about the academics. My kids are happy. They look forward to going to school
each day because they feel comfortable and valued at Willow. I can’t put a price tag on that.”
– Parent
“All the teachers are committed to Willow because we believe the integrated curriculum and
the Virtues Program are the right ways to teach children.” – Faculty
“I came to Willow because I was really drawn by the virtues and ethics of the mission
and fell in love with the fact that kids played in the woods. Willow was a clear match for me.”
– Administrator
“My students learn three different ways to
subtract. This is the long, hard road to excellence, but
it creates mathematicians.” – Faculty
“Learning at Willow is based on experiencing
and doing. This helps our students build the
confidence to go out and ask questions, make
connections, and bring those ideas forward.”
– Head of School
“We’re more of a family. It’s so small and so new, we
have the ability to develop strong relationships with
each other. You can’t find that at any other school.”
– Student
