Our outreach facilities, the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center and the Tri-Cities Center, have strengthened the University’s partnerships with the community. The President’s Report highlights the major accomplishments of the University over the past year in teaching, research, and service. Our accomplishments are fixed to our mission and strategic imperatives and demonstrate the University’s commitment in preparing the next generation of scholars, professionals, and corporate and community leaders. For the past year the University has developed and implemented strategies to increase enrollment, to increase retention and graduation rates, and to provide an education for an increasingly diverse student population. We strive to serve our students in this technologically-sophisticated world and to mesh those skills with the experiences and information mandated by a global society. Each division within the University is committed to providing accountability and integrity, which are the earmarks of Achieving With Excellence. In enhancing our programs and activities, the University has collaborated extensively with industry, foundations, and corporations to determine the best way to support local workforce needs. We have responded to adults in the Hampton Roads area, who need continu- In order to meet our educational responsibilities, expand and maintain research excellence, and extend our service efforts, Norfolk State University must generate private resources to help fill the gaps in dwindling local, state, and federal funding. We need the support of all of our alumni and friends to be successful. In fall 2005, the University will publicly announce its first comprehensive major gifts campaign, The Campaign for Norfolk State University: Initiatives for the Future. This campaign will be vital as we secure funding for scholarships, research, endowed chairs, and other critical needs. In providing research, training, and education for the workforce of the future, the vision of the Research and Innovations to Support Empowerment (RISE) Center has evolved to include a telecommunications super-highway, the RISE SuperNode, which will eventually give birth to the RISE Campus. As you read the information in this report, please remember that we are successful in our endeavors because of your generosity. Please continue to make Norfolk State your “college of choice.” With a talented student body, a motivated faculty and staff, and your support, Norfolk State University will continue the excellent tradition of service that has sustained us for nearly seventy years. Marie V. McDemmond ONE Approach… STRATEGIC Norfolk State University Mission To provide an affordable, high-quality education for an ethnically and culturally diverse student population, equipping them with the capability to become productive citizens who continuously contribute to a global and rapidly changing society. Strategic Imperatives: Enhance students’ success by providing high-quality academic instruction and support to ensure an improved graduation rate Develop an efficient management structure to increase organizational efficiency and improve performance across all areas Increase total funding by identifying multiple funding sources and new initiatives to form a solid fiscal foundation and provide ongoing services for NSU’s constituents Core assets: • • • • Talented student body Motivated faculty and staff Public support Tradition of service Dr. Julien M. Earls Director of NASA Glenn with President McDemmond Board of Visitors Mr. Jack L. Ezzell, Jr. Rector Mr. Colvin D. Gibson Vice Rector Mrs. Viola M. Madison-Foreman Secretary Mr. Michael L. Ball Dr. Jacquelyn Y. Madry-Taylor Ms. Virginia M. Board Mr. Donald H. Patterson, Jr. Mr. Willie L. Brown Mr. B. Rod Rodriguez Mrs. Teresa H. Carrington Mrs. Judith L. Rosenblatt Mr. Howard P. Kern Mr. Bobby Norris Vassar Overview of Major Accomplishments Norfolk State University’s achievements and strengths during the past year highlight the continued progress of the University toward carrying out its mission and reaching its goals. It has been a year marked with meeting the challenges of the University’s three goals: enhancing the technological proficiency of administrative processes; addressing the shortage of graduates in the critical skill areas of nursing, teacher education, and science and technology; and improving the living and learning environment. The University is using the latest technologies to provide more efficient administrative functions including programming the final phase of an online admissions application that can be downloaded to the student database. As a means of streamlining the registration and payment process, pilot tests for online bill payment and online registration were developed in preparation for a spring 2005 launch. Norfolk State also appointed a director for enrollment management to gain better coordination and stronger controls in tracking enrollment. In addition, NSU completed the infrastructure for an online giving software program. Campus wireless capabilities were also expanded allowing students to access Internet services in residential halls and open areas. The march toward positioning Norfolk State University as a telecommunications hub for the Mid-Atlantic region through the RISE (Research and Innovations to Support Empowerment) Campus and its RISE SuperNode is closer to reality. The Enterprise and Empowerment Foundation of Norfolk State University and TelCove, Inc., a leading provider of innovative telecommunications solutions, entered into a partnership that enables the SuperNode to be powered by TelCove’s premium fiber optic network. The RISE SuperNode was completed in the fall of 2004 and will enable the next generation of the Internet to serve the University. Because of the increasing need for well-trained professionals in nursing care, education and science and technology, Norfolk State has stepped forward to fill that need. Within this goal is an objective to secure funding for these critical programs. Under this objective, the University attracted grants and gifts with private and foundation support totaling more than $2.5 million. With the infusion of these funds, Norfolk State was able to help expand student support, enhance the learning environment, enrich the RISE Center and embrace the community. In addition, to meeting the need for professionals in critical skills areas, the University is making strides in attracting and developing these highly needed graduates. During the past fiscal year, NSU saw an increase of enrollment in science and technology programs by nine percent over 2002 and an increase of enrollment in the school of nursing by 21 percent over 2002. The University is not only attracting students to these areas, but it is also providing them with the support that will allow them to succeed in their academic careers through a variety of retention programs. Additionally, the Office of Student Support Services was established as a resource for student job placement, internship placement, interviewing skills training, and career counseling. When it comes to enhancing the living and learning environment Norfolk State undertook preliminary work that will lead to upgrades of several buildings as well as the construction of a new student center. Site surveys and engineering studies of the site for the new student center were conducted, while discussions with vendors regarding construction of the new residence hall adjacent to Norfolk Community Hospital were also initiated. They pursued excellence in competition whether it was on the basketball court, baseball diamond, football field or at track and field meets. The athletes gutted out performances that carried on our proud Spartan tradition. Norfolk State junior linebacker Kevin Talley set a new NCAA all-classification record for tackles in a single season, with 195. He was named a second-team Division I-AA All-American by The Sports Network and The Associated Press, the first Spartan to be so honored since James Roe and Aaron Sparrow in 1995. Talley was also a first-team All-MEAC selection and a Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College All-American. He also became the first-ever Spartan or HBCU athlete to win the General Douglas MacArthur Award, which is presented annually by the Norfolk Sports Club to the most outstanding college athlete in the nation who attended a Virginia high school. Talley graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News. The NSU men's cross country team won its fourth consecutive MEAC title in the fall of 2003. Joseph Terer took first at the championship meet, and three of his teammates, Duncan Bitok, Cleophus Koros and Thomas Hightower, also finished in the top 10. Coach Kenneth Giles, who is also head track & field coach, was named the MEAC's Most Outstanding Cross Country Coach. With the win, Giles has now won four cross country championships and earned one second-place finish in his five years as coach. On the women's side, Denisha Hudson and Linah Tallam also earned AllMEAC honors by finishing in the top 10 of the women's race. NSU senior track athlete Tianna Goldring participated at both NCAA Track & Field Championship meets in the long jump. Although an injury slowed her and contributed to her 15th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Meet in March, she rebounded with a personal-best jump to take fourth place and AllAmerican status at the NCAA Outdoor Meet in June. She is the first NSU women's track athlete to become an All-American since 2000. Aside from Goldring, NSU can also boast several other standout performances by its track and field athletes. Freshman Cristina Zuniga, the first woman polevaulter in NSU history, won her event at both the MEAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Another freshman, Imani Moorman, set a new MEAC Outdoor Championship record of 42 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump. She also won the high jump outdoors and the triple jump at the indoor conference meet. Her inspirational talk centered on Creative Leadership: From Inside and Out. NSU hosted two media fellowships awarded by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Designed to provide journalists with in-depth discussions and workshops, the fellowships presented were Affirmative Action and Increasing the Number of Minorities in Science and Technology, and the War on Terrorism. May 2004 The Honorable William E. Ward, former mayor of the City of Chesapeake, spoke to more than 700 graduates at NSU’s spring commencement ceremony. NSU’s Office of News and Media Relations won the coveted Public Relations Society of America Hampton Roads Chapter’s Pinnacle Award for its crisis communication strategy during Hurricane Isabel. February 2004 The entire month was devoted to various Black History Month celebrations. Highlights from this year’s celebration include the Norfolk 17 Panel Discussion, the Underground Railroad Film Series, the Unfinished Agenda of Brown vs. the Board of Education, and a presentation on Massive Resistance in Virginia led by Barbara Ciara, managing editor and anchor at WTKR News Channel 3. March 2004 The worldrenowned S.O.S. Band was the featured entertainment at NSU’s Annual Green and Gold Ball and Forever Upward Awards ceremony. The 2004 Awards were presented in five categories: Academic, Alumnus, Government/Public Service, Generosity, and Service. The recipients were Dr. Rita Dandridge in the Academic category; Joseph E. Mr. Theodore Wilder Norfolk Employees Retirement System Mrs. Regina V. K. Williams City of Norfolk Norfolk State University Foundation, Inc. Message from the President of the NSU Foundation, Inc. As I reflect on the last three years that I have served as President of the Norfolk State University Foundation, I am greatly pleased with our efforts to support our mission “to receive and administer funds for charitable, educational and scientific purposes.” This year we have achieved financial growth through strategic planning and exemplary leadership. It is important that we continue to gain additional dollars so that we are able to expand our financial base for student support. Throughout the year several events are held with the sole purpose of addressing the needs of our students. In March 2004, President Marie V. McDemmond and the NSU Foundation hosted the fourth Green and Gold Ball, a black-tie event from which the proceeds go to student scholarships. This event provided us the opportunity to recognize five individuals and organizations with the University’s “Forever Upward” award. This year we added headliner entertainment, nationally known recording artists, the S.O.S. Band. I was honored to serve with an outstanding group of individuals on the NSU Foundation Board of Directors. Many of my colleagues have not only provided excellent service to the foundation but have also served and brought distinction to the Hampton Roads community and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Norfolk State University Foundation is conscious of the ever-widening shortage of resources of our students. With the number of people entering higher education on the rise, we must be prepared to provide them with the necessary financial assistance. As a result, we must be persistent in advocating and securing funds for our students. Together with my fellow board members, I extend my sincere appreciation for your sustained support of the University and hope that Norfolk State University will remain close to your heart. Richard Kiefner Jr. Message from the Executive Director of the NSU Foundation, Inc. Norfolk State University had another action-packed year. There have been many significant accomplishments that have brought about new dimensions for the University. The Norfolk State University Foundation continues to fill a vital role in providing invaluable financial assistance to our students. More than $287,000 was awarded in scholarships this year. In addition, The Virginian-Pilot generously donated $500,000 for “the last dollar in” student scholarships. This gift has and will, over the next five years, greatly impact the lives of students who have exhausted all other financial resources. It is contributions like these that are truly life changing. As we broaden our scope and look to the future, we do so with great expectation and anticipation. So many new and exciting things are on the horizon for Norfolk State University. The NSU Foundation undergirds efforts for the University to be successful in its first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, The Campaign for Norfolk State University: Initiatives for the Future. Several of our directors will provide campaign leadership for this undertaking. While embarking on these new endeavors, the focus remains constant—providing the best education for our students. This is accomplished by seeking out the exceptional professors, providing the monetary resources to our students, and instilling the value of a quality education to our constituents. We are eternally grateful to our alumni, faculty, staff, friends, students, board members and volunteers for their contributions that sustain our continual strive for Achieving With Excellence.
