University of Bath
Donor Report
2007-08
From the Chancellor of the University of Bath, Lord Tugendhat
Did You Know...?
Your gifts are now worth 50% more!
Under a new government scheme
established to encourage and promote
greater philanthropy, all gifts to the
University of Bath until July 2011 can
attract matched funding of an additional
50p for every £1 given. This means we can
achieve even more with the gifts you make.
This means that a gift worth £1000 to the
University could cost you as little as £391*
- not much more than £1 per day

* The 50% matched funding is in addition to the Gift Aid
already received on gifts from UK tax payers. “Cost to you”
figures quoted are for a higher-rate UK tax payer as this
means you can claim 25% of your net gift in your annual tax
return. Gifts from non-UK residents and standard rate tax
payers DO still qualify for the 50% matching.
My sincerest thanks go to all the alumni, parents and friends of the University of Bath whose gifts to
the University over the past year have enriched the lives of our students through the funding of the
many projects, scholarships and other activities described in this donor report.
I hope you enjoy reading about the many benefits your donations have brought to The University
of Bath and that, like me, you are proud to have played your part in this way in ensuring that Bath
remains one of the UK’s leading universities.
The University of Bath’s continuing success is greatly helped by the time and effort we put into
improving the quality of the student experience. Throughout their time with us, students are
encouraged to develop and grow personally, academically and socially. The scholarships and extracurricular initiatives made possible by your generosity are creating the opportunities our students
need if they are to flourish and reach their full potential.
Lord Tugendhat - Chancellor
From the President of the Students’ Union
Thank you so much for your support - your gifts have significantly improved the student experience
here at the University of Bath. The benefits of your gifts affect not only the fortunate individuals
supported by scholarships and bursaries, but also the whole student population. Alumni Fund
grants make a wider impact by funding numerous Students’ Union activities, whilst donations to
larger long-term projects will benefit many generations of future students.
The impressive combination of academic excellence and the wide availability of extra-curricular
projects is one of the many qualities that makes the University of Bath such an exciting place to
study. Further to this, it is one of the reasons that we attract and nurture some of the world’s most
talented students. We greatly appreciate your support and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank
you all for your generosity.

Welcome & Thank you
Welcome to the University of Bath’s Donor Report for 2007-08. The
following pages list all those individuals, companies, charitable trusts
and foundations, and other organisations who have given philanthropic
gifts to the University of Bath between 1 August 2007 and 31 July 2008.
Features
The past year has seen an increase of almost 50% in the level
of philanthropic support of the University, with just over £600,000
generously given to many worthwhile projects. This includes a record
£131,000 given to the Alumni Fund – 30% more than last year’s total
– due both to more graduates choosing to add their support and to
many existing donors choosing to increase their level of giving. The
Parents & Friends Library Enhancement Fund (see page 17) has more
than doubled, raising over £10,000 to support learning resources for
current students.
6-11 Student Activities
2-5 Scholarships and Bursaries
12-13 Sporting Excellence
14-15
Placements Overseas
16-19 Academic Excellence
20-26 Supporters and Friends
We have also seen many more individuals and organisations make
larger gifts. Our Leadership Giving Circles were introduced this year to
recognise and thank those who are leading the way with an annual gift of
£1,000 or more. We also established The Chancellor’s Roll of Honour to
pay tribute to those who have cumulatively given significant gifts during
the University’s lifetime, (see pages 20 and 21).
This is an exciting time for the University of Bath. Recent and planned
development projects, many of which are supported by your gifts, are
making it possible to make the leap from being a university which is
merely good, to a university that is truly excellent.
More than 1300 supporters are already, through their gifts, making a
real difference to current and future students, and to the University as a
whole. While there is still so much more that could be achieved, and will
be with your continued support, we can all be proud of the many projects
we have completed.
Whether you have given this year for the first time, or have been
supporting us for many years – thank you.
Names in bold are members of the Leadership Giving
Circles (see page 20). Names in italics are regular
donors who are giving to the University for at least
three consecutive years. Names showing a * are
those who have given every year for over ten years
(see page 20).
Donor Report 2007-8 Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships and bursaries can change lives – in some cases this may be the key to a student being able to come to the University of Bath at all. In others, the
additional possibilities opened by the scholarship can enable a student to expand their horizons and reach their full potential. Scholarships allow the University to
attract and retain the best and brightest students, regardless of their background. For the recipients, this recognition can be a motivating factor which we hope will
spur these young men and women on to great heights. On behalf of all the recipients we thank all those who donate to support them.
Alumni Fund Scholarships
Laura Aiken (centre - second row) received
an Alumni Fund scholarship during her
second year studying Chemical Engineering.
“This scholarship meant a great deal as
in my first year I worked on the Alumni
Fund telethon, during which time I had the
opportunity to speak to many of the Alumni
who generously gave to the University. It
was really lovely to be able to put voices
behind the support I have received, and
I am extremely grateful to everyone who
decided to donate. ”
The Alumni Fund has supported 45 scholarships in 2007-08. Pictured here with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Glynis Breakwell, are:

Hardship Grants
These days, most students are experiencing financial pressures.
The Alumni Fund makes hardship grants when a student is
experiencing severe hardship, for reasons which could not be
expected and are beyond their control. These grants are made via
the University of Bath Student Money Service, which is an advisory
and resources centre which helps students to manage their money
and access additional sources of funding. In an emergency, these
grants can make all the difference.

Victor Hall Scholarship in Business Administration
Tony Hall (BSc Economics, 2001) loved his time at Bath. A successful career in the City followed and
he began to think about how he could give something back to the University which provided him with
the education he needed to be where he is today. Having graduated quite recently, he understands the
financial pressure that attending university can put not only on a student but also on their families. That
is why Tony has decided to name a Scholarship in his father’s honour. Victor paid for his education and
Tony now wants to help someone in the same way. He is excited about the prospect of supporting an
academically outstanding student, who is as interested in finance and business as Tony is! He felt he
was given a few lucky breaks along the way to becoming the person he is today and would like to do the
same for others.
Pharmacy Centenary Scholarships
To celebrate over 100 years of
pharmacy at Bath, alumni are
supporting an endowed fund to
create a number of pharmacy
scholarships in perpetuity. One
of the primary donors to this fund
is Bharat Shah (BPharm, 1971).
Bharat is the Managing Director of
Sigma Pharmaceuticals Plc. He feels
that it is because of his time here that
he is where he is today and would
like to give something back to the
University which gave him the tools to excel in his career. He
has donated to the Pharmacy Centenary Scholarship Fund to
ensure that the next generation of pharmacists carry on the
legacy of Bharat and his fellow alumni.
This current generation includes Sophie Wahlich (MPharm,
2008) who is Chair of the student musicals society (BUSMS)
and Kate Louise Walker, who was awarded the Abbey
Santander Outstanding Sportswoman Fresher of the Year, for
her Judo performance.
The endowed fund will enable many scholars to benefit from
the generosity of graduates for the years to come. The Fund
aims to remove financial pressure from the list of obstacles
which prevent all students benefiting from everything that a
Bath education has to offer.
Continuing Support
We would also like to express again
our gratitude to the James Dyson
Foundation, Roger & Sue Whorrod,
the Hertzian Fund, Lady Cater
(pictured with the Vice-Chancellor
presenting Ryan Hong, Sir Jack
Cater Scholar, with his certificate)
and the RW Barnes Bursary Fund for
their continued support of individual
scholarships and bursaries.

SCHOLARSHIPS CREATING OPPORTUNITIES
Dr Steve Huckvale is supporting sixteen postgraduate scholarships for African students to study at the
University of Bath. Dr Huckvale is a three-time graduate of the University of Bath, having gained a BSc
in Engineering with First Class Honours in 1972, a PhD in Engineering in 1979 and was awarded an
Honorary DEng in 2007.
Two postgraduate Scholarships worth £5,000 will be available each year for students born in Africa, one
in Engineering and one in Management. The selection criteria are academic excellence and leadership
ability. Dr Huckvale believes that there is much more the developed countries can do for this continent
and hopes that this scheme, in its own small way, will contribute to the knowledge economy and
leadership positions within Africa.
Dr Huckvale’s personal commitment is bolstered by corporate support from his company, Moog Inc. Moog
is a worldwide designer, manufacturer, and integrator of precision control components and systems. The
four Moog Scholarships are to study on the School of Management’s full-time MBA programme, and are
each worth £6,875. As part of the award the recipient will be offered the opportunity of undertaking their
MBA industry project with Moog. Leadership is again a key selection factor.
The University is most grateful to Steve Huckvale for both his generous personal financial commitment to
fund scholarships and for the major part he has played in gaining Moog’s support of the MBA scholarship.
Both Steve and Moog are warmly welcomed to the University of Bath’s Minerva Leadership Giving Circle.

Student Impact is the free fortnightly Students’ Union Publication,
produced entirely by student volunteers in their free time.
Approximately 2,000 copies of each issue are distributed around the
campus. The paper is highly valued and popular, not only among
the student community but also among other Universities and local
stakeholders.. The newspaper is an important ‘face’ of the student
community in Bath.

A well-rounded education is about much more than the course studied. Many donors have chosen to support extracurricular projects which enable students to flourish beyond the lecture-theatre and seminar group. About a third of the
funds raised by the Alumni Fund are used for these projects to foster innovation and create new opportunities.

News Having an Impact
This Year Student Impact was awarded an Alumni Fund Grant
to update some of the electronic equipment in the newspaper
publication office. The grant was spent on two new computers for
the production of the paper, and two new digital Dictaphones to aid
interviews. The grant has allowed the production of the paper to
become faster and more efficient, allowing the students to spend
more time collecting scoops and less wrestling with technology.
Drumming Up Enthusiasm
Bath University Music Society currently has over 200 members.
The band practice room provides University students with the
facilities to practise, write, and rehearse music as a group. As
the only space of its kind it provides the students with a vital
resource, and is in use approximately 12 hours a day, 7 days a
week – this led to the existing equipment failing due to significant
wear and tear. This year the Music Society were given an Alumni
Fund grant to replace the drum kit and related equipment, the
amplifiers, an electronic keyboard, music stands, microphones
and other associated equipment, ensuring that the exceptional
quality of music output is not marred by lack of resources.
The Sound of Music
The University Chamber Choir was formed in 1977 to perform the large range of choral
music suited to a choir of about thirty-five voices. The choir is a Students’ Union society,
and its membership consists of students and staff and some members of our alumni
residing in the Bath area. The Alumni Fund provided a grant for the society to purchase
40 copies of Advent for Choirs which has extended their repertoire at the University carol
service at Bath Abbey and at other Christmas concerts, many of which are organised for
the benefit of charities.
Students on Camera
Campus Television is a student run society which covers as many
events as possible on or around campus including the weekly Score
and Funky Guppy, as well as the many sporting events played
every week. The society also covers special events such as the
‘Snowball’, the Summer Ball and Society Awards. This year CTV
was supported by the Alumni Fund to purchase new cameras and
editing equipment to extend the range of services they offer, and
a widescreen TV to be used in the Students’ Union to display CTV
programmes to a wider audience. Visit www.bathctv.com for more
information or to watch one of their shows.

Break Dancing – Not Breaking Bones
Doing Our Best
Camping and the Scouting movement go hand in
hand. The University of Bath Guides and Scouts
society (BUGS) has recently seen a huge increase
in its membership and currently only has one
serviceable tent that would fit only a quarter of its
members. With the support of the Alumni Fund
the society has been able to purchase three small
and one large tent for group camping expeditions.
The new tents mean that the society can now take
over half its members away at a time, and have
also meant that they can take more volunteers
away with them when they work with surrounding
local guide and scout groups for children. The
support of the Alumni Fund is making the campfire
burn much more brightly for all BUGS members.
It is in the nature of Break Dancing that they “throw
themselves around” and in the current space in the
Arts Barn, the vinyl tiles on a concrete floor have
prevented them from practising many moves. The
Alumni Fund has provided a grant for safety mats so
these incredible young people can fling themselves
around without the risk of serious injury. The
University of Bath Break Dancing Society has seen
something of an image makeover this year and has
been hugely successful in many society events such
as the “Shriek in a Week” show. They have also
influenced many young children to enjoy a different
kind of exercise by presenting Break Dancing
workshops in schools.

What Gravity Pulls Down – Throw Up!
Gravity Vomit is the University of Bath juggling and
circus skills society. Last summer the majority of
their juggling equipment was destroyed by a mouse
infestation in the Arts Barn. A modest Alumni Fund
grant was all that was needed to get them juggling
again. The society is well known in the local area
and also nationally, and apart from providing
students with a casual atmosphere to learn creative
skills, they also contribute to the local community by
running youth centre workshops.

Engaging with the Community
The Student Community Action (SCA) Group in the Students’ Union has worked for many years with Junior
Gateway, a club for local disabled, special needs and able-bodied children. In December 2007, the Alumni Fund
made a modest grant to enable the group to run a Christmas Party for the children. Both Gravity Vomit (see
page 9) and the Cheerleading Team also came along to provide activities and entertainment. There was also a
visit from a very special guest sporting red & white clothes and a white beard!
“It is a great opportunity for the children to interact with the large variety of students from the University, as well
as giving students a chance to contribute back into the local community”.

Mind The Gap
The Mind the Gap Roadshow is a one-day event established with the help of a grant from the Alumni Fund. The pilot
event helped students to recognize the gap between their university experience and the world of work, and what they
need to do to ensure they are prepared for graduation. The day consisted of interactive workshops, a ‘Sell Yourself’
Competition filmed by Newspepper.com and an evening ‘Introduction to the art of networking’ which put into practice
what the students had learnt in the workshops. The SU is hoping that, having been established with the help of the
Alumni Fund, it will be possible to continue the Roadshow in future years with corporate support.

Fostering enterprise is a key tenet of the
Alumni Fund. Regular readers of the Donor

SIFE asked the Alumni Fund for a grant to
meet half the costs of a national conference
for entrepreneurial students, with the other
half planned to be raised from corporate
donors. In order to foster the entrepreneurial
spirit of the student team managing the
planning and operation of the event, the
Alumni Fund agreed to make the grant on a
“matched funding” basis – with each gift from
a business being matched by the Fund up
to the maximum required. This enabled the
students to be more persuasive in gaining
support for the project.

Sailing Club Boats
In 2007 the survival of the University Sailing Club
was in doubt because the poor state and class
of the boats made them ineligible to compete
in a number of competitions and other national
events. The club was awarded an Alumni Fund
grant to purchase a new fleet of sailing boats.
The ‘Firefly’ boats will ensure the club can
continue to develop, provide a much improved
training environment for its members, and can
compete at the highest level. Since the new
boats were purchased, the club has made the top
three in six major national competitions.
Community Sports for the Next Generation
Brian Roper is a Bath-based philanthropist who supports
artistic and social welfare charities by donating 3% of his firm’s
pre-tax profits. Thanks to a gift to the University of Bath by
Brian’s company, Roper Rhodes, matched by SportsMatch, the
Government’s initiative to encourage sponsorship of grassroots
sport, TeamBath has been able to establish coaching in
conjunction with local schools. The aims were to provide all 8-11
year old children in the region with the opportunity to participate
in high quality PE, to create a clear pathway to sporting success
and improve the sporting skills and knowledge of primary school
teachers. They also wanted to ensure that statutory funding
sources would pick up the scheme and run it themselves.
It has been a tremendous success: 25,000 pupils have taken
part in the scheme, membership of sports clubs has climbed,
nearly 1,000 teachers have received professional development,
and the local authority and School Sports Partnership now fund
nine community coaches.
Another significant donation this year from Roper Rhodes will
allow us to roll out the programme for Key Stage 3 pupils. This
all forms part of TeamBath’s “pipeline”, which now extends from
tots, via primary and secondary schools, to clubs, academies and
then the University itself, linking the focus sports to the national
governing body elite squads.
TeamBath aims to provide 10% of TeamGB to the London 2012
Olympics – thanks to Roper Rhodes we are now set not only
to continue to identify and nurture sporting talent for future
Olympics but also to place enjoyment of sporting activity at the
heart of a generation of youngsters.
Safety First For Kayakers
The University of Bath is located within two
hours of some of the best white water kayaking
locations in the country. White water kayaking
can be very rewarding, using skill and balance
to negotiate rapids, journey down the river and
experience the true outdoors. In order for the
Canoe Club to run white water kayaking trips
for its new students, the club needed several
current students to have the skills to lead trips.
The Alumni Fund made a grant to the Canoe
Club to allow five current students to employ
the services of a professional British Canoe
Union coach and assessor during a kayaking
trip to the French Alps, which enabled them to
bring their skills up to the standard required for
independent trips in the future.

Elite Athlete Grants
Mr Michael Sharp
Mrs Sian Massey & Each year the Alumni Fund makes a small number of grants
to support the very best of our young athletes on their path
to potentially becoming the very best in the world. In most
years, a small number of particularly skilled athletes studying
at the University of Bath are asked to join students from
other universities to compete as part of the British team in
competitions such as the World University Games (also known
as University Olympiad) or the Student Championships of
specific sports. These events can take place anywhere in the
world, and students are expected to pay for their own travel to
the event location.

The events can often be the “proving ground” from which
TeamGB athletes for the Olympic Games are selected. Many
times in the past, students have had to forgo this opportunity
to represent their country due to lack of funds. The Alumni
Fund makes grants of up to £500 to enable students to
compete in these prestigious events, also increasing the
profile of the University of Bath. In 2007-08, University of
Bath students were selected for the World Student Badminton

Placements
An important part of many courses at the University of Bath is the opportunity to consolidate academic learning with a placement. Many of these
placements are office- or laboratory-based employment within the UK, and students often earn enough to keep themselves, or even save a little. However,
there are some students whose career aspirations require a different kind of placement – perhaps in a far-distant country and often unpaid. Alumni Fund
grants are available to support unusual and innovative placements which the students would be unable to undertake without support, and which will have
a significant impact on their future careers.
Peak Performance
Predator and Prey
Biology student Harriet Milligan
received a placement grant to spend a
year volunteering with a conservation
organisation working both in New
Zealand and South Africa. Carrying
out research on predator-prey relations
and in-country management, the
year enabled her to understand and
participate in conservation programmes
in action around the world.
The Peak Centre for Human Performance in Canada
is the world leader in exercise testing and training tools
for Sports Science. Pippa Alford, a student in Sports &
Exercise Science, received a placement grant towards
travel expenses to spend her third year working in their
high performance laboratory. During her placement
Pippa learned hands-on how to administer and analyse
qualitative individual tests on athletes, devising specific
exercise evaluations, and appropriate solutions to
maximise athletic performance.
Microfinance – Making a Difference
Politics & Economics student Stuart Clapham
received an Alumni Fund grant contributing
towards travel and living expenses so that
he could work for a year with a microfinance
project in Argentina. This was a unique
placement opportunity combining first hand
experience of development aid and practical
economics in action.
Did You Know...?
A gift of only £10.85 per month can be enough to
create a £250 grant to help a placement student with
travel costs every year? - and it could cost you only
27p per day!

Juice for Life
Nilima Ajaikumar, a third-year Mathematical Sciences
student, received an Alumni Fund grant for a short project
over the three-month summer break. Whilst not a traditional
placement, the enterprising and innovative nature of the
work merited Alumni Fund support. Nilima had previously
made contact with CarePlus, a charity in India which provides
free medical, emotional and economic support to terminally
ill cancer patients living in extremely under privileged
circumstances. Working with CarePlus and with the help
and support of the Students’ Union’s Enterprise Team, Nilima
generated a business plan to set up a small business making
and selling fruit juice, which would be staffed and run by the
families of the CarePlus patients who are no longer able to
support their dependents. The new business, known as ‘Fruit
Aid’, provided these women with jobs and gave them the
confidence to deal with the world.
Antipodean Conservation
Jennifer Matthews spent 6 months on a
placement supported by the Alumni Fund at
the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She
was working as part of a team conducting
independent research on Australasian gannets
at the Cape Kidnappers gannetry and has
learnt and applied many innovative laboratory
techniques as well as conducting field
research. She says
“This was a unique opportunity for me to get
directly involved in a conservation project of
real significance, and to develop and apply
laboratory techniques which are both directly
relevant to my course and which will help
me in my future career in conservation and
biological sciences. Thank you so much to
the Alumni who made this possible.”

Dr Doug Pulley (BSc Electrical Engineering 1989 & PhD Electrical Engineering 1993) of picoChip,
presenting the picoChip prize for the Best Electronics Final Year Project to Andrew Carvell
ACADEMIC PRIZES
It is vital that we recognise and reward excellence. While all students at Bath have demonstrated that they meet
exacting standards, there are a few who stand out. A number of academic prizes have been set up this year which are
targeted at the “outstanding” within different departments. Our funders include alumni, companies and friends of the
University but always their purpose has been the same – to raise aspirations and celebrate success.
Particular thanks goes to picoChip and Persides, local companies led by alumni who are fostering excellence in
Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering respectively. Also, special thanks to Mrs Marjorie
VandeLinde and Mrs Yvonne Quayle, both wives of past Vice-Chancellors, who are supporting artistic achievement.
LIBRARY & LEARNING CENTRE
Many alumni and other friends of the University of Bath specify that they would like their gifts to benefit the Library. As well as the Alumni Fund making grants for
specific development projects, many donations are given to enhance the collection of books and electronic resources available for teaching and research.
Around the World in 80+ Books
Parents & Friends
The “Around the World in 80+ Books”
was conceived as a project both to
increase the number of culturally
valuable books in subjects not studied
at the University of Bath, and as a way
to build up understanding and crosscultural friendships in our increasingly
international student population.
The Library ran a pilot project last
year, in which students were asked
to recommend fiction books which
encapsulate something of the culture
and people of their home country. The
library then added many of these books
to the collection (both in English and
in the original language if not written in
English) as well as adding them to an
online readling list which was publicised
to students. The Library is not funded
for leisure reading, and although the
pilot project proved popular it could not
be continued without additional funds.
An Alumni Fund grant enabled the
Library to greatly increase the number of
recommendations which could be fulfilled,
as well as increasing the publicity about
the project to the students.
Parents and friends of graduating
students often wish to commemorate
graduation day by giving a book or
other research and learning resource
to the Library. These are signified by
a personalised bookplate as a lasting
reminder. However, it is not just the
parents of those in their final year
of study, as many parents of current
students also choose to make gifts to
enhance the learning experience of
all current and future students. This
year, the Parents & Friends Library
Enhancement Fund raised more than
double the amount raised last year, with a
total of almost £10,000.
“My sincere thanks to all parents and other friends who have generously
donated towards the Library Enhancement Fund. Your gifts have enabled
us to greatly improve the resources which the Library and Learning Centre
can offer our students. These books and electronic resources will benefit
many generations of students both now and in the future.”

A £500,000 grant from The Wolfson Foundation
has given one of the newest Institutes at the
University a flying start. BICS is a collaboration
led by Mathematical Sciences and Mechanical
Engineering, with multidisciplinary partners
throughout the University. The principle behind
the work is that large systems have properties
that cannot be explained as being the sum of
the properties of the system’s components. For
example a flock of birds or a flow of traffic appears
to have a life of its own beyond the movements
of the individual birds or vehicles that comprise
it. Similar properties emerge in diverse complex
systems, allowing for research to interact across
a wide range of topics, with techniques derived
in one area successfully applied to apparently
unrelated areas.

Abbey Santander
Grupo Santander, Abbey’s parent company, has established an organisation to support higher education
known as Santander Universities. Through this, Santander donates 1% of its profits to university
programmes in countries in which it operates. Bath was one of the first universities in the UK to be
selected to be part of the Santander Universities network
The effects of the support are seen in a number of areas across the University, targeting academic and
sporting excellence as well as fostering links with Iberamerican countries. For example in the last year
five postgraduate scholarships for students from Iberamerican countries have been established; research
and teaching exchange schemes set up with other Universities in the 600 strong Santander network;
work on establishing an Iberamerican Film Bank has commenced and prizes for Entrepreneurship among
MBAs and sporting excellence among Freshers have been awarded.
The University is delighted both with the level of commitment made by Abbey and by the fact that this
support has been able to be invested in a rich mix of University activities.

Sulis & Minerva Circles
Leaders motivate, challenge and inspire others.
The University is fortunate to have the support
of many but is particularly grateful to those
individuals, trusts and companies who are helping
to drive our campaign for higher level giving and
who are investing in our future.
In 2008 we introduced The Leadership Giving
Circles to thank and recognise those who have
given £1,000 or more to the University during
the last academic year. Nearly 50 individuals
and organisations joined the Sulis and Minerva
Circles. They supported the Alumni Fund,
individual scholarships and bursaries; prizes for
both academic achievement and excellence in
sports and the arts; and projects such as the Arts
Complex development.

Chancellor’s Roll of Honour
Long-term philanthropy is also being recognised by the University - the Chancellor’s Dinner in
June 2008 saw the inauguration of the Chancellor’s Roll of Honour.
The Chancellor, Lord Tugendhat, paid tribute to The Medlock Charitable Trust and The Wolfson
Foundation for their “exceptional financial support over much of the University’s lifetime.” More
than £5m has been received from the two charitable bodies.
The Medlock Charitable Trust’s early gifts funded student bursaries within the Faculty of
Engineering and Chairs within Mechanical Engineering and IT. Last year the University was
delighted to announce that gifts from the Trust were being used to create a £1m endowment to
support the Medlock Chair in Engineering. The holder, Professor Gary Hawley, is undertaking
research focused on making diesel engines more efficient and less polluting.
The University of Bath has been fortunate in receiving the support of The Wolfson Foundation
for more than 35 years. We received our first grant for the development of a laboratory for
engine transmission in 1972. Since then the departments of Physics, Mechanical and Electrical
Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmacy and Pharmacology have been amongst the
beneficiaries of gifts totalling more than £4m (see also page 18).
Mr David Medlock (left) and Mr Paul Ramsbottom (right) signed The Chancellor’s Roll of Honour
and were presented with Membership Roll Certificates.

Charter Day
– an opportunity to thank you in person
A special celebration to thank all our donors
and legacy pledgers in 2006-07 took place
in October 2007. The Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Glynis Breakwell, hosted the day
and was delighted to meet over 50 donors and
their guests. Professor Tamás Székely from
the Department of Biology & Biochemistry
opened the day with a lecture on ‘Conflict &
cooperation: a short guide to the family life of
birds’.
Finalist student, Alex Nicholson-Evans (now
elected SU President) then outlined the wideranging student entrepreneurial and enterprise
activities on campus, many of them supported
by the Alumni Fund.
Guests had the opportunity to lunch with
academics and some of the 55 students who
had received individual financial support that
year, look at plans for the proposed new
arts complex and find out more about life on
campus on student-led tours.

Our Alumni Fund telethons would be impossible without
the hard work of our student callers. Current students
enjoy speaking with alumni, and the calls are just as
much about sharing views of the University old and new
as they are about giving to the Alumni Fund. Our hard
working student callers do not receive any commission,
as 100% of the gifts they help raise go towards the
projects which our donors wish to support.
Corporate Benefactors support our students with
donations of prizes and incentives which allow us to
give the callers a little extra reward. This scheme helps

Decades of Donations
This year, we are celebrating the 150 alumni who have made a gift to the
University of Bath every year for the last 10 years. Each has been sent a limited
edition print of a watercolour painting of the University, created by one of our
current students, Ruth Le Fevre (Biochemistry), as a small token of our great
appreciation. Even the most modest of gifts, especially when made regularly
over a long period, can make a huge impact. We cannot emphasise enough how
important this long-term support is to us – Thank You.
Not wanting to be left out, the Class of
2008, the newest additions to the alumni
community, also made a gift to the Alumni
Fund in celebration of their graduation. We
warmly welcome them into our community
of donors and wish them all the very best as
they begin their careers.
Gifts made by members of the graduating
class can optionally be made in honour of
a special faculty member, staff member,
mentor or friend who made a difference to
the student during their studies. Therefore,
we would like to extend a very special
thank you from the students and the whole
University to:

With Gift Aid, for every pound you give to us, we get an extra 28 pence from the Inland Revenue. To qualify for Gift Aid, what you pay in Income Tax
or Capital Gains Tax must at least equal the amount we will claim in the tax year. If you want all your donations made to the University of Bath since 6
April 2000 and all donations in future to be treated as Gift Aid donations please tick this box.
From time to time we publish a “Donor Record” listing the names of those who have given to the University of Bath, to thank all our donors.
If you would prefer to give anonymously and not be listed in this way please tick this box.
