DERBY CITY MUSTANG CLUB REGIONAL CLUB MUSTANG CLUB OF AMERICA VOLUME 26 ISSUE 4 APRIL 2015 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Dec meeting minutes Pages 2-3 Upcoming events – Pages 4-5 Now that the Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs have been unveiled to the world, we have been waiting to hear the specifics on when they go on sale, how many will be made, and how long the models will be produced – among other things. We may have the answer to two of the above. Odds & Ends – Page 5 Member Spotlight – Pages 6-7 Mustang Club of America – Pages 8-9 Military Affairs– Page 10 Trading Post – Pages 11-12 Mustang fun – Page 13 DCMC Board Page – 14 DCMC PX – Page 15 According to Mustang6g.com, production numbers have been released for the 2016 Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs. Not only that, but the timeline given for production has been leaked. We are still waiting to hear the official numbers from Ford, but the numbers were posted on Mustang6g.com with a link to a Facebook account belonging to an employee that works at a large Ford dealership, Gaudin Ford. The employee posted the production numbers that he must have received from his employer, but he has since removed the post from his social media account, but not before the news started spreading. According to that employee, the 2016 Shelby GT350 will have a run of 5,000 units a year, and the track-specific GT350R will be limited to just 500 a year. The GT350 is said to be produced for 5 years. While the word isn’t completely official until Ford releases the numbers, but this could be a slip-up of the real deal, and an indicator that Ford is looking to produce plenty of these cars, but won’t be stamping them out in droves. It also crushes any rumors that the V8 is about to be replaced within 2 model years. Given the run of the previous generation GT500 that lasted 7 years, we have to wonder what changes the GT350 will see of the course of its lifetime. The GT500 received a boost of over 100 horsepower from the beginning to the end of its run. We know Ford always tends to refine things. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the Voodoo powered GT350 will only get better with age. 1 By Amie Williams of ‘Stang TV News Highlights from the MAR 10th meeting • In Lynn’s absence, VP Phil Helm filled to head up the meeting We were called to order at 6:33. • New members were identified, the Pike family joined the club. If interested in checking them out, they have a Facebook group called: Mustang 6 Association M6A. A great internet magazine covering the Mustang, free to sign up. http://www.stangtv.com/news/ Editor’s Note: As mentioned at the March meeting, I will not be at the April meeting due to some stuff happening that week. I hope to attended several other events in April. As I always request, if you attend any club event and happen to capture some pictures of members and their cars, please forward me ([email protected]) some copies so they can be shared with the rest of the membership through the newsletter. Also if you would like to be featured in the monthly spotlight, throw together a bio about yourself, family and your love for the Mustang, send it to me along with several digital shots of your Mustangs. I still feel it is a great way for members to learn and get to know each other better as a Mustang family. Also if you have a business, it is an excellent way to get a free plug for members that might be interested. Hope to see everyone at May’s meeting. Also remember, driving season is starting up, and if your pony has been in the corral all winter, perform a good service and a thorough safety check 5 before taking it out for a little exercise. Ron and Barb were married on Nov. 29th 1969. Ron attended Louisville Male High School in 1969. Joined the Louisville Fire dept in November of 1970-Retired as Captain in 1996. Went to work at Harshaw Trane in Oct. of 1996 and is currently employed. Barb went to Ahrens trade school in 1969. Started working at First National bank in 1974 and is currently employed in the same field. The company has changed hands several times but Barb has managed to continue and is currently in her 40th year. Ron and Barb have two daughters Sherry and Diana. We have 5 Granddaughters Leah, Krystal, Brandi, by our oldest daughter and Angel and Autumn children of our youngest daughter. Leah has a son, his name is Brayden and is our first great grandchild, however Krystal not to be outdone, has a son on the way, and I believe due in July and is expected to be named Hunter. Rob & Barb joined DCMC in April 1994. At the time we were driving a 1965 fastback Mustang 2+2. It was a Rangoon Red with a black interior. Our first experience with DCMC was to go on a road trip to the MCA 30th anniversary show in Charlotte NC Motor Speedway. We were to drive our ’65 to the show. I was working on putting new interior in it during the week leading up to leaving. The night before we were to leave I took the car off the jack stands. It looked great. So I decided to take it for a test drive. As luck would have it, the car would not run a lick. It had a terrible miss. That is how we managed to be the people in the back in Dodge Spirit on our first mustang trip. As time went on we got more involved with the club. Ron became the chairperson for the entertainment committee for several years. He introduced the Sat night party and the pony trails. Barb served on several committees including entertainment and registration. As time went by Ron became the car show chairperson. I served in that position for several years leading up to national show that DCMC sponsored. During the year of the show Joe Walters asked if he could chair the national show as I had to work out of town most of the summer in Bowling Green and was not available. After the National show I ran for Vice President with Joe Walters as president. 6 Barb and I have been members of the MCA since we joined DCMC and have attended several regional, national, and Grand National shows. We have had several Mustangs since we joined the club. In the spring of 2013 we started R&B Car Care selling Surf City Garage products, garage vacs, and volt reactors. Since starting the business we have had to slow down with our involvement with the club. Just not able to juggle everything. In our 20 years as members at the DCMC we have met several good friends and have made some lasting relationships. In closing we have always had DCMC close to our hearts, and look forward to many more years with Derby City Mustang Club. 7 Around the MCA Entering Competition at MCA National Shows Last month I explained the various classes you can enter your car in at MCA National Shows. If you have any question about the class your car belongs in, there are several MCA Certified judges who belong to DCMC, who would be glad to help you decide and also give some pointers on what you should do to your car. Of the classes, Thoroughbred, the Concours and Unrestored Classes place emphasis on originality, while Occasional Driven, Daily Driven and Modified Classes not so much. But all classes place a great deal of emphasis on Condition, Cleanliness and Workmanship. Before I attended my first National show I went to the MCA website and printed the Concours judging rules for my car. There are 10 pages and go into specific detail on what the judges are looking for, and the points awarded or deducted for each item. Even if you are entered into the Occasional Driven or Daily Driven classes, they would still be a great resource to see how your car will hold up to scrutiny. Usually when I attend a National MCA Show I try to leave with enough time to arrive at the show site on Friday about midday. That way I have time to go through classification, get all the paperwork taken care of, get my dash card and parking spot on the show field. Then we go and find a selfserve car wash and clean the car up, then head for the hotel to check in. There is always a welcome dinner or cruise on Friday night so on to meet old 8 friends and see what the local club has planned for us. Mustang Club of America News (cont) Saturday morning it’s up early for breakfast and on to park the car and get it ready for judging. A couple hours is plenty time to finish up the detailing, and even walking around a bit to look and see what others have brought. Then at 11:00 AM one of the most important events of the day, the Judges meeting. Here is a piece of information you may not know, judging is not some big secret. You can attend the judges meeting and listen in on how the head judge wants the judging to be conducted, but will also welcome anyone who is so inclined to help. You do not have to be a Gold Card Judge, or a Certified Judge or even ever have judged in your life. They are always looking for help and if you want you can become part of a team paired with a Gold Card Judge and others and can see exactly how it is done. This is the best way to get started and if you like judging, you can help at a couple shows then take the Certification test online, become a Certified Judge and even in time a Gold Card Judge. After the show closes for the day, we usually get a group together to find a local establishment for dinner. If you’re planning on attending the Grand National Show in Columbus Ohio this year, I plan on leading the group to a place we found several years ago on the south side of town in German Village, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus. The Autobahn Buffet is wonderful, and the deserts are out of this world. Sunday morning can be spent doing whatever you choose as long as your car was judged on Saturday. If not you need to take the car back on the showfield so the judges can finish up. Then after lunch come the Awards Ceremony. Winning an award is not the only reason to attend the National Shows. Being part of the MCA family and having your Mustang the best it can be is reward enough. But winning an award and realizing you are being rewarded for all the hard work sure does feel good. Submitted by Larry Rixman – DCMC’s MCA subject matter expert 9 Jack TF Pike Mil Affairs 2015 Flights: Next Mission is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2015, departing Louisville Int'l Airport (SDF) to Baltimore (BWI) and return. June 6th departing out of Louisville Airport (SDF) to Baltimore (BWI) and return. September 26th departing out of Lexington Airport (LEX) to Baltimore (BWI) and return. All dates are subject to change based on funding, transportation costs, availability and volunteer/support staff availability. Volunteer & Guardian Training: • If you plan on serving as a Guardian, you will be REQUIRED to attend this informative training with emphasis on Safety and Security. • This training is required for Guardians by our chapter and insurance company. No exceptions can be granted. • The 2015 Guardian training dates have been set for Saturday, May 9, 2015 and Sunday, May 17, 2015 to be held at 2:00 pm at the VFW Post 117, 170 Evergreen Rd., Middletown, KY 40243. Guardian Application: Honor Flight would not be successful without the generous support of our Guardians. Guardians play a significant role on every trip, ensuring that every veteran has a safe and memorable experience. Duties include, but are not limited to, physically assisting the Veterans at the airport, during the flight and at the memorials. A very limited amount of family members and friends of specific Veterans may be considered as Guardians only if a slot is available, and if they attend the pre-requisite Guardian training. Training is provided on an as needed basis approximately one month prior to the planned flight. Guardian priority will be reserved for medical professionals and those with previous Honor Flight Guardian experience. Only after these slots have been filled will any other category of Guardian applicant be considered. This policy is based on safety considerations. Guardians are also responsible for their own expenses (transportation, meals, t-shirt, etc.). A Guardian fee is used to offset the cost of travel, meals and supplies for the Guardians. We normally have a waiting list for those wishing to serve as a Guardian. EFFECTIVE January 1, 2015, the Guardian Donation will be $500. This Donation only helps to offset the actual travel and expenses for the Guardians. Note: Volunteers who have logged 2 or more trips as Guardians, will continue to have their fee remain at $250. If after reading the above, you would like to be considered as a Guardian for Honor Flight Bluegrass, please download, complete and mail the Guardian application to the address on the form. Do Not send the fee until notified of a flight assignment and training date. 10 NOTE: Electronic copies or faxes are not possible due to the original signature requirement on the application. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If Ford had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, Ford issued a press release stating: If Ford had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash.........twice a day. 2.. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3... Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4.... Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5..... Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6...... The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. 7....... The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8........ Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9......... Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10.......... You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off. PS - I'd like to add that when all else fails, you could call "customer service" in some foreign country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!
