It's not uncommon for rare vehicles to surface in a barn or rundown
garage, encrusted in decades of dust, itching to be sold for a handsome profit.
What is rare, however, is to find a one-owner, 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 —
one of only about 1,000 ever made — resurface in its original condition,
fastidiously maintained and never washed for fear of damaging the paint, with
only 8,500 miles on the clock.
Larry Brown, a resident of Centre Hall, Pa., passed away on his birthday
during the latter part of last year, leaving behind a trove of fascinating items.
With no wife or children to inherit his estate, the entire collection — his
house, TVs, snow blowers, motorbikes and of course cars — are heading to
auction, with the Mustang the star attraction.
Brown purchased the car on May 9, 1969, for $5,245.97. The last
recorded warranty work occurred in September that year, when Brown had
the door glass adjusted. At that time, the registered mileage was 1,665. By
1973, Brown had stopped driving the car altogether, storing it in his garage
with just 8,531 miles on the clock.
According to the auction listing at Ron Gilligan Auctioneers, the GT500,
that features a 428 Cobra Jet engine meshed to a 4-speed transmission, still
maintains its original paint, tires, belts, hoses, factory steering wheel cover
and 1968-dated coded spark plug wires. Vehicles with more miles, in far less
original condition, have sold for over $100,000 — offering clues as to

much Brown's GT500 may fetch when it goes under the hammer on April 25.
CENTRE HALL, CENTRE COUNTY - Going once, going twice, sold!
One of the rarest Ford Mustang's ever, a 1969 Shelby GT-500 was sold Friday in Centre Hall to a
man who lives right here in our region and he paid an unbelievable price for it.
Thousands of people from across the country came to Centre Hall Friday to see how much the
Shelby Mustang would go for. The bidding didn't disappoint.
It's sold, folks! George Cowfer, owner of Junior Coal in the Philipsburg, Clearfield County area, is
out $280,000 with the purchase of his sixth Ford Shelby Mustang.
Over 1,000 people signed up to bid in Friday's car auction and it came down to the wire. Cowfer
and a couple from California were neck-and-neck to the very end.
With just over 8,500 miles, it's likely one of the lowest-mileage survivor models of its kind that's
out there. Its original owner, Larry Brown, bought the car new in 1969 for $5,000.
Folks in Centre Hall got quite the surprise when the dealer who first sold the car to Brown made an
appearance. He said in 1969 he sold the car for two-percent commission.
Auctioneer Ron Gilligan said he's happy the car is staying local and even more impressed with the
auction's atmosphere.
"I was very, very happy with the price. It was a great experience," Gilligan said. "It was a fun
auction to do. What was really exciting about it was that the crowd participated and got into it. It

was a very fun atmosphere and I was really happy to do it."

To My Fellow Club Members:
2015 has arrived and with a new year Derby City Mustang Club
will have new members, upcoming events including meet & greets,
car shows, parades, etc and new officers.
I look forward to representing DCMC as president and thank
you for your vote of confidence. I will be reaching out to each of
the 140+ members/families over the next couple of months to
encourage/invite each of you to meetings and events during the
upcoming year.
David has chosen to take a much deserved break after his
hardworking years as president. But, he will still be a big part of our
club as he will be Chairperson/Liaison for the club’s new joint
venture with our sponsor Bill Collins Ford. He will be organizing the
FIRST Annual “Fordfest” All Mustang/Ford in October. And, he will
need volunteers to help make it a success.
With this new exciting car show, September Stampede will be
put out to pasture. Thanks to all members over the years that
helped make the Stampede a success for 16 years.
Our club is only as successfully and fun as its members chooses
to make it. So I encourage everyone to participate, volunteer, share
your ideas/suggestions and attend meetings in 2015. It would be
great to see ALL of the 140 plus members/families at our February
meeting.
Looking forward to an exciting year as president of our club,

Highlights from the Jan 13th meeting
• Ron presented David a small token for his birthday and years of service as the outgoing club president.
• David opened the meeting at about 6:35.
• New members were introduced, Terry Corder, owns a silver smoke gray 1964 ½ Coupe, and Mike
Raymer who owns a black 2013 Mach 1.
• David was presented with a birthday cake and card.
• Broke for chow that was brought in by Yvonne Lehring.
• George Maxwell presented the treasurer's report, Wynn Jefferson made the motion to accept the
treasurer’s report as presented and Leo Miller second.
• David made a request to George to prepare a donation to Bill Collins Parkinson Foundation.
• Ron Kinberger took the floor and requested anymore nominations for the various club positions. Lynn
explained in detail the duties and responsibilities of the position of Road Command. A motion was to
elect the nominated individuals for club positions by a vote of acclamation. Martin Kinney second and
it was accepted by the membership. Lynn Eddington is the new club president, Phil Helm is the new
vice-president, George Maxwell and Kathy Weston were reelected into their positions of treasurer and
secretary. Road captain is still open to be filled.
• David wanted to know who ate all his birthday cake and why did he only get crumbs?
• Joe Walters made a motion to accept the minutes from the Dec meeting as published, Lynn Eddington
second, membership voted to accept.
• Lynn Eddington gave the road captain’s report on the club Christmas party on Dec 20 with about 50
members attending. Joyce Estes gave a review of the evening’s events with the highlight knowing that
Sax Bill made another appearance.
• Jan 24th at 6:00 would be the annual Soup/Chili get together. A sign up for various dishes was
requested. There will be a judging of the best tasting soup or chili to see who carries the award
for the next year.
• Carl Casper Car Show at the Louisville Fairgrounds & Expo Center on Feb 20-22.
• The Gateway Southern Stampede National Mustang Show on May 22-24, 2015 will be in
Augusta, GA as mentioned by Larry Rixman
• Larry Rixman briefed on the MCA soliciting for ideas to draw in younger Mustang owners to join the
Mustang Club of America.
• Membership Director Wynn Jefferson briefed on the current active member strength of 141 families. If
a member forgets their renewal date or any changes to email, address and phone number , contact
Wynn. In George’s absence, Wynn was selling any remaining 50 year Mustang DVDs.

Joe Schreiner is still on his Florida vacation, so no brief on the web site except still looking for someone
to take over the administration of the web site.
Jack TF gave a brief on the newsletter and military affairs, requesting continued submissions for the
monthly member spotlight piece for the newsletter. Reminded the members of their free utilization of
the Trading Post for buying, selling of items as well as services needed or offered. The first Bluegrass
Honor Flight for the new year will be taking place May 16th, also mentioned a call for volunteers
needed for that organization to get those World War 2 vets to their memorial in DC.
Had an extensive debate on the true meaning of what a “Jack Leg ” vs a “Jake Leg” is, still not sure what
it is.

Update=according to the on-line Webster’s dictionary, a Jackleg is characterized by
unscrupulousness, dishonesty, or lack of professional standards. Jake Leg is when your leg goes
numb from drinking bad moonshine or any other equally crappy booze. So Joe was right on.
David mentioned that a new application letter would be prepared for the DCMC/Bill Collin’s Fordfest.
Requested more sign up for people willing to be chow for club meetings.
Kenny announced the winner of the 50/50 which had a duel price , cash of 24 bucks or a $25 gift card
from National Part Depot. New member Terry Corder won the cash and Leo Miller won the gift card.
Thanked Yvonne for bringing the chow.
David thanked everyone for their support of him as the club president and to extend that same support
on to Lynn.

I own a Race Red 2013 V6 Mustang with a manual transmission and the
Performance package. I have traditionally owned European cars and test
drove a Mustang on a whim with a coworker. And promptly fell in love. This is
the first Mustang I have owned but growing up my Mother drove a 1971
Mustang (351C 2V). I guess it was the car that planted the seed, I knew I was
going to have one of my own some day. Even though the V6 doesn't have the
power of the 5.0 I wanted something with good balance. I have taken my car
to Putnam Raceway and I was very pleased with how well it handled. I am
slowly working on improving my car's ability for the track but still keeping
some resemblance of drivability since this is my daily driver.
I am married with two sons (ages 4 1/2 & 2). We have lived in Louisville for
a little over 2 years having moved here from Lexington for my job. I am a
Mechanical Engineer working at GE Appliances. My sons are both very much
into trains right now but I am hoping to start steering them into the direction
of cars. I have always enjoyed cars and hope my Mustang will be something I
can share with them as they grow older.
I am originally from southern Illinois (Carbondale) and went to college there
too. My wife is originally from Brazil. We met while both living in Lexington
and have been married for almost 6 years.
My hobbies are primarily keeping my kids alive and entertained. As I
mentioned, I have always loved cars and have owned various MG's, a Lotus
Esprit, a Jeep CJ-7, and according to my wife, too many Audis. I also enjoy
shooting and playing the violin although not at the same time.

Current Treasurer of the Derby City Mustang Club and been a member of DCMC for 7
years. Born and raised in Scottsville, KY which is 10 miles south of Barren River Lake in south central
Kentucky. Graduated from the University of Kentucky. Owner of Safeguard distributorship for 23 years
and we produce printed products including corporate apparel and promotional products. Live and
work in Middletown.
Mustangs go back a long way in my family. I first loved Mustangs when my Dad bought a new
’65 convertible, white with black top and black interior in the late summer of 1964. Although I was too
young to drive, I knew that car was special. My Dad traded that in for a new 1968 Mustang convertible
when they came out. However my first Mustang was a 1969 Mach 1, Candy Apple Red, 451 4 bl, 4
speed. I got this one brand new with some money I had saved up along with a lot of help from my
parents. One of my best friends’ Dad owned the local Ford dealership.
Needless to say I had the best car in high school. There were a couple of Shelby GT 500’s in
town and a Boss 429 but they were owned by older guys. With there not being a lot to do in Scottsville
we spent many nights cruising around town or at the local drive in restaurant just like in Happy Days. I
drove that car for a few years and then went to the dark side (Chevy Monte Carlo). Worst mistake of
my life and I regret it every day…but who knew back then? That was it for me and Mustangs until the
2005 generation came out. I found myself back in the Mustang grip again. I bought a red 2005
convertible V6 and then traded it for a silver 2006 GT convertible the next year. I traded that car in last
year for my current love, a 2013 Boss 302. It’s a great Mustang. I’ve been lucky to have been around
some nice Mustangs but that red ’69 Mach 1 should never have gotten away. I often wonder whatever
happened to it and have occasionally had dreams about it. Wonder what that says about me? Maybe
someday I’ll get a 2005-2009 generation red Mustang and make a ’69 Mach 1 clone or even better find
a ’69 Mach 1. Married to Susan for 35 years and have one son, Spencer who is 27.

Here is a note I received from Sandy Boleware, Youth Committee Chairman and MCA
National Secretary, asking for ideas on how to make the MCA more attractive to younger
members.
For those of you who were at the Summit in November, there was some talk of
what we can do to bring the youth into the club and retain them. And I asked that you
take this question back to the clubs and submit some ideas.
What we want is a "pool" of ideas, and the best way to achieve this is to go
directly to the source. Please ask your clubs what they feel would be attractive to their
youth as a benefit. Ask your youth how we can help them to enjoy the hobby better.
I heard various ideas at the Summit, including driving events, scholarships, etc.
and I am taking it all into consideration. I love them all, and hope to implement them,
with club participation at every level. The driving events will require some much
needed support locally, such as a regional club taking on this event, with our help, to
make an event that the youth could drive to and not be out of town. I highly
recommend a driving course at a large mall, casino, etc. These locations often hold
such events and would be a great draw to their facility. The MCA is here to support
you, with planning, insurance, etc. don't be afraid to use your regional club benefits.
Lets put our heads together this year, and make this the Year of the Youth! I
welcome all suggestions, and encourage you to give my email to your youth, they can
contact me directly.

organization into the future. The National Board is asking for our input so if you have
any ideas, feel free to contact me and I will pass them on to Sandy.
Also, I am in the process of applying for the 2014 MCA President's Award for Derby City
Mustang Club. If you entered a vehicle in a National Show in 2014, if you joined MCA in
2014 or if you are a MCA Gold Card Judge or a MCA Certified judge please let me know.
Next month, we'll look at MCA National shows, and judging.

2015 Flights:
Next Mission is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2015, departing Louisville Int'l
Airport (SDF) to Baltimore (BWI) and return. All flights operate from/to Louisville
International Airport unless otherwise noted.
All dates are subject to change based on funding, transportation costs, availability
and volunteer/support staff availability.
Volunteer & Guardian Training:
• If you plan on serving as a Guardian, you will be REQUIRED to attend this
informative training with emphasis on Safety and Security.
• This training is required for Guardians by our chapter and insurance company. No
exceptions can be granted.
• The next training session is to be decided and will be held TBD at the VFW Post
1170, 107 Evergreen Road, Middletown, KY 40243.
If enrolled in VA health care, a Veteran who does not currently have a Veteran’s Identification
Card (VIC) can request a VHIC at their next VA health care appointment. In order to ensure your identity,
you’ll need to present an appropriate form of ID, such as your driver’s license. And while you’re there
make sure that your record is updated with your current address. Your VHIC will be mailed to you,
generally within 5-7 days.
If you are not enrolled with the VA and want to receive a VHIC, you will need to apply for
enrollment. You can do that online (which is the fastest way to apply for enrollment) at
www.va.gov/healthbenefits/enroll. You can also apply by phone at 1-877-222-VETS (8387), by mail or in
person at your local VA health care facility. Of course, you will need to go to your local VA to have your
picture taken. Veterans who were issued a VIC do not need to return to their VA medical center to have
a photo taken for the VHIC

The Derby City Mustang Club was initiated in November
1989 by a small group of Mustang enthusiasts in the
Greater Louisville area. We hold monthly club meetings
and sponsor a monthly car cruise during the summer
months. We enjoy taking our cars out for Sunday drives
as well as attending local cruises and national car
shows. Our cars include everything from Shelby GTs to
the latest Cobra, Saleen, Roush, Mach I and everything
in between. The main purpose of this club is to have
