SWEETS - Key Training Center
ARE YOU A SKILLED VOLUNTEER?
I
t's fun to learn new things and develop new skills. This is true of every one no matter your age or ability. The Key Training
Center helps developmentally disabled adults to do just that and is expanding the opportunities available for them. The
Key Center has developed new plans for our Adult Day Training program which include specialized classes for each group
from 8:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. There are several groups of students with each group focusing on a
different subject. The topics currently being planned are hobbies,
education, computer skills, physical fitness, arts and entertainment,
daily living and health. Additional topics for consideration include
Spanish, music, drama and nail and hair care.
Volunteers who have skills in these areas are being sought to assist Key
consumers as they learn. Interested people should enjoy teaching,
coaching, and sharing their talents. Individuals who would consider the
opportunity to be occasional speakers to explain or present their
hobbies, craftwork, or other topics that would fit in these categories and
stimulate ideas are also being sought.
If you are absolutely crazy about your hobby and would like to share it
with others, you're the one we're seeking. Volunteers select the days
and amount of time they wish to volunteer. Background screening for
these opportunities is required by Florida State law. Key Training
Center consumers and employees deeply appreciate volunteers and

Foundation at (352) 527-8228.

st

spectators or volunteers. This event is sponsored each year by the
Kiwanis Club of Homosassa Springs, each year with the assistance of
many other volunteer
groups and area businesses.

SWEET
Honoring the truest meaning of Christmas
givingthe spirit of volunteering, the Key
Training Center treated its cherished
volunteers to a festive evening and sweet
treats created by resident managers and other
staff members. Volunteers gathered at the
Chet Cole Life Enrichment Center to
celebrate the holidays and their important
contributions to the Key. Roy Zachry
entertained the crowd with seasonal music
setting the tone for the evening. Each
volunteer received a special snowman and
sleigh ornament made by the program
participants at the Key Training Center.
Volunteers make life sweeter for the residents
and program participants at the Key Training
Center by providing friendship and the
opportunity to take part in activities most of us
take for granted. The highlight of the evening
came when volunteers shared a favorite
experience involving activities with program
participants. Everyone spoke of deep
friendships that have developed through the
course of volunteering. Each one shared the
belief that volunteers receive more than they
give.

KEY
A special note of thanks goes to Bush Home Services of
Homosassa and all their employees. The Bush team created
and built the “Tree of Hope” that was placed at the Key
Center Foundation on Gulf to Lake Highway before
Christmas. Bush employees sold the right to place your
name on an ornament on the tree. This unique fundraiser
resulted in a donation of over $5,000 to the Key Training
Center.
Thanks also go to the Skyview Tennis Club that was the site
of a fantastic day of tennis and friendly rivalry while the
members competed in the 2008 Skyview Charity Tennis
Tournament. This event was the brainchild of Tom Slick who
invested his time and efforts over the past year to organize
the tournament. The Key Training Center is greatly indebted
to Mr. Slick, the people who worked with him and the
businesses that sponsored and supported the tournament.
The Key Center received almost $8,000.
E
BASS TOURNAMENT
nthusiastic anglers are lining up to cast a line in the
Annual Citrus County Bass Challenge on Saturday,
April 4, 2009. They are vying for the opportunity to
catch the “big one” on the Withlacoochee River, Lake
Rousseau and the Rainbow River in Dunnellon, Florida,
where rumor has it trophy-sized 10-plus pound largemouth
bass are being caught. The tournament blasts off from the
Withlacoochee River Dunnellon public boat ramp. The title
sponsor for the tournament is Dex Imaging. Anglers will
enjoy a guaranteed payout of more than $13,000 in prizes
based on a 100-boat field. Big Bass is guaranteed at $1,000
by Bush Home Services with 2nd Big Bass at $500 by the
Hagar Group. Tournament anglers also receive great food
through a Courtesy Tent provided by Beef 'O' Brady's of
Crystal River. Entry forms are now available at the Key
Center Foundation at (352) 527-8228. Entry fee is $150 per
two-man team. Early registration is important because flight
times are based on order of registration.
The tournament promises some special features for both
anglers and spectators including a fishing seminar by Capt.
Rick Burns at 2 p.m., and a great selection of raffle items.
Don’t miss the suspense and excitement of the weigh-in. Be
there at 3 p.m. Come and watch the anglers bring in their
catches, see who will come out on top in this event, and
applaud the winners of the big cash and prizes. So, mark
your calendars for April 4, 2009.
Key Center Foundation was founded in 1993 as the fundraising,
community education, volunteer, and planned giving component
