waffles. But even for German visitors to Oberberg the regional speciality
"Bergische Kaffeetafel" is an amazing rich meal. On a typical coffee table you will
find yeast bread with raisins, pumpernickel and rye bread, honey, pear, apple or
sugar beet syrup, butter, curd, cheese, cold cuts, pound cake, as well as rice
pudding with sugar and cinnamon, fresh warm waffles served with hot cherries and
whipped cream.
Like no other meal the "Bergische Kaffeetafel" represents the nature of the region,
reflecting its history and character. The simplicity is due to the poverty that marked
the region throughout centuries, the multiplicity shows the hospitality of the people
of the Bergisches land.
In case you prefer taking a "lighter" coffee and cake meal, just try the waffles with
hot cherries, one of the famous cream gateaux or fruit flans.
The ice cream cafes, mostly run by Italians, offer another attractive alternative for a

train to Cologne every hour
during day time. It takes 70

and offer a broad field of outdoor activities (for suggestions see overleaf).
As head town of the district, Gummersbach runs a theatre (800 seats) with a rich programme, including
operas, theatre, concerts of symphonic, choral and modern music. In the town centre a historical, 300
years old building accommodates another cultural offer: the "Bruno Goller-Haus" (100 seats).
Exhibitions, courses, lectures as well as any type of performance that fits in the main hall, including

Shopping, money and credit cards:
Please keep in mind that even though most of
them do, not every shop, hotel or restaurant
will accept credit cards. The most common
way to avoid paying in cash is EC-Card, most

Banking-hours: In the town centre you find
offices of all the most important Banks. Their
opening hours differ, but mostly they keep
open until about 4 p.m., on Thursday they
close even an hour or two later, on Friday an
hour or so earlier. Saturday the bank offices
are closed, except for the post office bank
counter. They all provide cash dispenser
(which all accept VISA and Euro/Master card,
Deutsche Bank accept American Express as
well, in combination with the pin code.)
Shops in the town centre of Gummersbach
have different opening hours. Food stores
usually open earlier (about 8 a.m.), non foods
more likely at 9.30 / 10.00 a.m. In the evening
closing hours start at 6.30 p.m., on Thursday
and Friday some stay open until 8 p.m.,
Saturday closing time is between 2 and 8 p.m.
