This was only the 35th such gathering of its kind in the more than 450-year history of the Jesuits. With 225 Jesuits from nearly 60 countries in attendance, our meetings were simultaneously translated in English, French, Spanish, and Italian. The primary goal of this Congregation was to elect a new Superior General to replace the Very Rev. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., who served the Society of Jesus and the Church in that role for 25 years. On January 19, after praying together in the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the delegates of the General Congregation elected Very Rev. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., as the new Superior General. Shortly after the election, it was with great joy and gratitude that I shared this news with the California Province (see Province News, page 5). We are indeed blessed to have Fr. Adolfo Nicolás as our new Superior General. After the election, we began the second phase of the Congregation, to take up matters of importance to the Society of Jesus in our service of the Church in today’s world. As our benefactors and partners in mission know, Jesuit works are grounded in the reality of a desire to be of service to the Church. During the Congregation, this was a key concept for us in reflecting on the renewal of the Society. In 2005, Fr. Kolvenbach, described the challenge in this way: “With the Society’s involvement in so many institutions and works, it may appear to outsiders like a multi-national business or perhaps a benevolent…nongovernmental organization. That is why we must constantly remind ourselves that we are an apostolic religious body, dedicated to the service of God. Our lives and activities must first and foremost find their vitality in God without whom we can do nothing, and in accord with our Ignatian spirituality, rooted in a deep religious experience through a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.” More than anything else, we Jesuits are grounded in our relationship with Jesus Christ; the partnership in mission that we seek with others flows from this relationship. Our vows help us to shape this commitment, this identity, and our community for mission gathered around and in Jesus Christ. As this issue of Mission was going to press, we were expecting to receive the official Decrees of the Congregation on Identity, Mission, Collaboration with Others, Obedience, and Governance. We worked hard on these documents in a spirit of prayer, discernment, and collaboration, and I encourage you to read of them. In his closing homily of the 35th General Congregation, Fr. General Nicolás shared this reflection in sending the delegates forth: “The logic of the Christian experience is very clear. God is love, and so we too love. God is mercy, and so we too show mercy. God is good, and so we too desire to be good. If we do not love, we really do not have anything to say. Here we discover, I think, the root and source of our identity and our mission. Why do we want to love the poor, to help the lonely, to console the sad, to heal the sick, and to bring freedom to the oppressed? Simply because that is what God does. Nothing else. It is the very essence of Christ. Christ taught us how he acts, how he lives, how God loves—and we try to learn.” May the Spirit of the Risen Christ help us to learn, to love, and to serve. May God continue to bless our communities and our families, our apostolic ministries and our Church, and our world so broken and in need and yet so charged with God’s love and grace waiting to be fully revealed. Gratefully in the Lord, Rev. John P. McGarry, S.J. Provincial Building a health clinic—stone by stone— in Rwanda Twin cities of Nogales, Ariz. Province to launch Kino Border Initiative I n late March, the California Province announced plans to launch the Kino Border Initiative (KBI), a binational effort to provide innovative social, pastoral, and educational ministries to migrants and the communities most affected by them on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. The KBI will be based in Nogales, Ariz., and Nogales, Sonora—twin cities which are the region’s major ports of trade, entry, and deportation. Father Sean Carroll, S.J. (left) and Father Peter Neeley, S.J. In making the announcement, Father Provincial John P. McGarry, S.J., noted: “By making a concrete and visible commitment to the KBI, the Society of Jesus is making a public and prophetic commitment to stand—with one foot on each side of the border—in a context of suffering, misunderstanding, humility, and hope. Through the KBI, the Province seeks to serve the Church by creating opportunities for pastoral formation, providing faith-based social analysis, and advocating for the protection of human rights and the common good.” The initiative is a partnership with Jesuit Refugee Service/USA (JRS/USA), the Mexican Province of the Society of Jesus, and the Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist, in close collaboration with the bishops and pastoral leaders of the Diocese of Tucson, Ariz., and the Archdiocese of Hermosillo, Sonora. Prior to the KBI’s formal launch in January 2009, the Province will prepare to open a Jesuit residential community in Nogales, Ariz., which will include Jesuits from the California Province, JRS/USA, and potentially from the Mexican Province. Father Sean O. Carroll, S.J., will serve as Executive Director of the Kino Border Initiative, and Father Peter G. Neeley, S.J., will serve as Associate Director for Formation and Education. In Nogales, Sonora, the KBI will be responsible for staffing a diocesan-sponsored migrant care center where staff and volunteers provide immediate humanitarian assistance and counsel to migrants deported from the U.S. The KBI has contracted with the Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist to administer this center located near the port of deportation. On the U.S. side of the border, socio-pastoral outreach will consist primarily of coordinating volunteer and service opportunities for local parishioners to get involved in providing care for deported migrants. Beginning in summer 2009, the KBI plans to host school and parish groups for immersion experiences. Though PICO is best known for its grass-roots organizing efforts in the United States, it has recently taken on an international dimension by providing training for community organizers in Africa and Central America. One organizer is Pastor John Rutsindintwarane, Executive Director of Congregations Rebuilding Community in Rwanda. For the past two years, he has been helping the people of Mumeya to build that village’s first health center. There is no hospital within 30 kilometers of Mumeya, so residents have to walk or be carried by stretcher for miles to receive medical care. Inspired by meetings organized by Pastor John, the people of Mumeya decided to show their local and national leaders how serious they were by clearing a site for the health center and building its foundation. Eventually, they won the support of Mumeya’s mayor and Rwanda’s Minister of Health who gave 6 million Rwandan francs to continue building the center. PICO is also at work in six Central American nations, helping to organize groups and empower local people to participate in public life and to create innovative solutions to common problems such as poverty, water pollution, and poorly maintained roads. For example, in Tecoluca, El Salvador, people recently gathered in San Nicolas Parish church to open a dialogue with a the owner of a cheese factory that is allegedly discharging contaminated water into a river used by the community. SEAN MASTERSON IN REMEMBRANCE Ignatian Volunteer Corps taps the talents of 50-plus folks T he Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC), a Jesuit-sponsored national community service organization, invites men and women aged 50 and greater to apply their extensive work, family, and life experiences as volunteers with organizations that serve the materially poor. IVC volunteers commit to serving two days a week for 10 months (usually September through June) and also to strengthening their faith in the Ignatian spiritual tradition through discussion at monthly gatherings, reflection, days of prayer, and annual retreats. Founded in 1995 by two Jesuits, IVC has now grown to 13 regions nationwide, including two in California. In Los Angeles, the IVC program is still in its infancy. Having started in 2006 with three volunteers, it has now grown to eight. Volunteers from around the Archdiocese of Los Angeles work with agencies in various capacities such as tutoring high-school students, delivering meals to the homebound, journeying with the homeless as they work toward self-reliance, and providing spiritual mentorship to inner-city school teachers. For more information, contact Jennifer Mangali, Regional Director, by calling 310937-8280 or e-mail [email protected] In San Diego, IVC volunteers serve in homeless shelters, emergency food pantries, legal aid clinics, prisons, medical clinics, and improvised classrooms. So it’s fitting that Homeboy got its own fresh start last fall, by opening a gleaming new 21,000-square-foot headquarters that brings the nonprofit’s business entities and support services together under one roof for the first time. But rebuilding lives remains the heart and soul of Homeboy’s mission. The two-story, $8.5-million complex, with its sleek glass and bright paint, shines like the beacon of opportunity it symbolizes for those seeking a way out of the harsh existence of gang life. Located on a once-blighted lot on the north edge of downtown Los Angeles, at Bruno and Alameda streets, this is neutral territory for the city’s estimated 600 gangs, one of the factors involved in choosing the site. Some 1,000 people come through these doors every month seeking services or jobs in one of Homeboy’s small businesses. At Homeboy’s new headquarters, Anthony Keys (right center) and Alfredo Hernandez create breads and pastries in the Homeboy Bakery. 12 MISSION summer 2008 ng ho m i e s in L.A. Fostering growth and service Marcos Luna presents a tray of freshly baked muffins. Experiencing unconditional love Seven years ago, one of those looking for refuge and a new start was Joseph Holguin, who grew up in Aliso Village, a notorious public housing project plagued by eight rival gangs. His sister and brothers all belonged to gangs, as did his father, a heroin addict who died of an overdose. Joseph fell prey to gang life and drug abuse at a young age, selling crack on a street corner at age 10. By 14, he had fathered a child, become a full-blown drug addict, was shot for the first time, and landed in juvenile detention. At 15, he was shot again. “My homies were planning funerals, not weddings,” he recalls. “As far as I could see down the street was as far as I could see my future.” Joseph met Fr. Boyle when he was 9 and again while he was serving time in the state penitentiary. After his release at age 21, he called Fr. Boyle asking for a job. “He said, ‘I’ve been waiting for your call.’ He showed us something we’d never known before: unconditional love,” says Joseph. Today at 29, Joseph is a peer navigator, one of four Homeboy leaders trained by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to form connections with incarcerated gang members so they have a place to turn after their release, rather than getting drawn back into gang life. Launched at the end of 2007, the program has been so successful that there are already plans to 14 MISSION summer 2008 Homeboy Industries traces its roots to Jobs for a Future, a program created in 1988 by Fr. Boyle while he was serving as pastor of the Dolores Mission parish in Boyle Heights. Homeboy became an independent nonprofit in 2001 and has since grown into a national model. Its first business enterprise—Homeboy Bakery—was lost in an electrical fire in 1999. “When the original bakery burned down, there was a tremendous outpouring of support from the community,” says Kaile. “We used [the donations] to buy the land for a new bakery. But it became clear to everyone that we needed larger headquarters.” Planning for a new building allowed the staff, which now numbers 260, to dream big. A larger facility would give Homeboy’s businesses room to grow. Bringing everything together in one space also would be a godsend to clients, making it easier for them to attend training, classes, and counseling sessions. A $12-million capital campaign made the dream a reality, funding construction and startup costs for the businesses to expand. In October 2007, the building was dedicated as the Fran and Ray Stark Center, named for the late film producer and his wife whose foundation was a major donor to the campaign. Feeding body and mind On a sunny Southern California afternoon, young men in Homeboy T-shirts are cleaning the windows and making the headquarters sparkle. Those same T-shirts, along with tote bags, mugs, and other Homeboy/Homegirl merchandise are on sale in a shop just off of the lobby. Next to the shop is the new 86-seat Homegirl Café, teeming with a large lunchtime crowd. Patrons of the popular café can watch the Homegirls in action at the demonstration kitchen, making signature specialties such as Angela’s Green Potion (mint-spinach limeade) or tacos filled with delicacies ranging from carnitas to tofu and served with a variety of fresh salsas or jalapeño pesto. The café, staffed by 28 Homegirls, has won raves from O Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. It serves breakfast and lunch, but there are plans to add dinner service soon. A separate kitchen supports the café’s rapidly growing catering component. The aroma of freshly baked bread permeates the air while display cases brim with tempting pastries, all made in the resurrected Homeboy Bakery at the rear of the building. To prepare for the 5,000-square-foot bakery’s reopening, a core group of six bakers attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to become certified bakers, then interned at another bakery. Now as supervisors of Homeboy Bakery, they oversee nine other bakers and two pastry chefs. The bakery has contracts to supply local restaurants and upscale grocers. “We’re negotiating a couple of new contracts now, then we’ll need more bakers,” says Kaile. “We’re also developing packaging to get the Homeboy brand into supermarkets.” Other fixtures on the ground floor include case-management services; job-development offices where 300 clients each month hone their interview, resume, and job-readiness skills; and a tattoo-removal clinic where 250 clients each month participate in the removal process that can take up to two years to complete. Upstairs are two classrooms, a large computer center, and an expanded mental health program. Because the counselors are on site, in a safe environment, the program supports a traditionally hard-to-reach client base. The classrooms and computer lab have greatly broadened Homeboy’s education components which range from G.E.D. preparation to learning effective life skills such as parenting, basic finances and budgeting, and household management. Homeboy also recently started a charter high school on site, with 23 students pursuing their diploma. As Homeboy continues to grow, Kaile says priorities include transitional housing to help those who can’t put together their first and last months’ rent or have trouble leasing an apartment because of their criminal record. Daycare services are also needed. “It’s a major factor in many women being able to hold a job,” notes Kaile. As for Homeboy’s founder, Fr. Boyle recently took a muchdeserved sabbatical. Kim Sifford, in charge of maintenance for the café, says “He is the soul of the place.” Homegirl Café, 130 W. Finding a home at Homegirl Café A lthough Kim Sifford, 21, and Ana Espinoza, 24, had never met before working at the Homegirl Café, they shared many experiences: an early upbringing in South Central Los Angeles, troubled relationships with their parents, and eventually run-ins with the law. When Kim was in fifth grade, her mother moved the family to the west side to pursue a better environment and education. At 17, she secured a full-time job, but because the family depended on public assistance, her mother kicked her out of the house when she wouldn’t give up the position to prevent a cutoff of benefits. “I was on the streets for a little while,” Kim recalls. Desperate, she committed a robbery and wound up serving four years. While incarcerated, she met Father Gregory Boyle, S.J. After she was paroled and attending a drug-rehabilitation group, the supervisor wrote Homeboy Industries on the board. “I came the same day,” she says. “It was not a coincidence. Right now, this is where I need to be.” Now, with an associate’s degree and 30-some hours of community college under her belt, Kim supports her 14-yearold brother as a dependent. Eventually, she plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and dreams of becoming a graphic artist and designer. She is enrolled in a Homeboy partnership with Otis College, designing Homeboy and Homegirl dolls. Ana Espinoza had a rough childhood, too. When she was 10, her 17-year-old half brother was killed in gang violence. Her father was an alcoholic prone to physical abuse. “Sometimes my dad didn’t come home for days,” she recalls. “It was always just my mom taking care of us.” As a young adult, Ana was arrested for domestic violence and battery (both stemming from a fight with her boyfriend) as well as theft and disturbing the peace. “I had nowhere to go. Homeboy helped me get on my feet,” she says. While both Kim and Ana earn salaries for working in the café, Homeboy Industries provides them with more than a job. “Everyone here is very helpful and seems to really care,” says Ana. “I love working here. It’s like home, my second home.” MISSION summer 2008 15 Good Morning, A NEW CATHOLIC MODEL SCHOOL IN SACRAMENTO 16 MISSION summer 2008 Cristo Rey! The day begins with prayer and announcements, then “What happens next is what we’re all about,” says Joan Evans, director of development. At 7:50 a.m., one-fourth of the students pick up lunch bags and head out to several vans waiting to transport them to a variety of jobs. Each student works five days a month at one of 40 sponsoring organizations to help defray the cost of their education. Extended school days and a longer year compensate for the work days, so that students miss no class time. Indeed, the Corporate Work-Study program (CWS) is the lifeblood of the Cristo Rey Network, an association of 19 Catholic college preparatory high schools that serve young people from lowincome families. The network began in 1996 when Jesuits and their lay partners opened an innovative school in one of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods. FAR LEFT: Monique Sanchez, Marcus Jones, and Cynthia Villegas hold banners with the watchwords of Cristo Rey High School Sacramento. NEAR LEFT: Students pick up sack lunches before heading off to work at corporate sponsors. MISSION summer 2008 17 At Cristo Rey Sacramento during 2007-2008, CWS sponsors supply $6,250 of each student’s annual tuition of $8,630; most students receive financial aid to cover the balance. In September 2006, when Cristo Rey opened in a former Catholic elementary school in South Sacramento, providing transportation from the school to far-flung jobs was one of the challenges. Van transportation, which costs $300,000 per year, is expensive but essential to get students to employers who include banks, hospitals, and advertising agencies. Even with intensive training, 14- and 15-year-olds can initially feel intimidated in these professional settings. Sophomore Rodrigo Rodriguez, who works downtown at Vanir Construction Management, recalls his first encounter with the high-rise building’s revolving doors and multiple elevators as “kind of scary.” His co-workers quickly put him at ease. “We’re delighted to have Rodrigo on our team,” says Pam Sammons, Vanir’s VP/Director of Administration. “The students have gained experience with a variety of equipment, such as scanning documents and creating PDF files. I feel particularly proud of watching them grow in selfconfidence,” she adds. Companies sometimes provide more than jobs. Jeri Hunt, vice president of human resources for Waste Connections, Inc., bought the first class of 100 students individually wrapped sweaters—the only Christmas present many of them received. Without such generosity, Cristo Rey Sacramento could never 18 MISSION summer 2008 have opened. But even before the school could nurture such sponsors, it needed a fundamental partnership. I M erc y, G oodness , S er v ice n Sacramento, like other dioceses nationwide, Catholic education had become too expensive for the working poor. Christopher Bakes, a local attorney and graduate of Jesuit High School (JHS) in suburban Carmichael, knew this. So did Father Thomas H. Smolich, S.J., a fellow JHS alumnus who was then Provincial of the California Province. “Tom first suggested we consider a Cristo Rey school,” says Bakes. After Bishop William Weigand of the Diocese of Sacramento endorsed the plan, the California Province sponsored a feasibility study which began in January 2006. Many students who couldn’t afford Catholic schooling were Hispanic, a large and rapidly growing population. The study quantified the problem: “Largely poor or of moderate lowincome, this community is grossly underrepresented in the Diocese’s 54 Catholic elementary and high schools.” For example, in one Spanish-speaking parish with 7,000 congregants only 2 students attended a Catholic high school and 40 attended Catholic elementary schools. As the study progressed, Bakes and Father William Muller, S.J., then Provincial Assistant for Secondary and Pre-secondary Education, asked the California Province, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Auburn “Our call to prayer is ‘Shining Mercy, Goodness, and Service to all.’ ” Sister Kathryn Camacho, S.N.D. de N., Cristo Rey’s founding principal, with students (from far left) Benito Rodriguez, Rodrigo Rodriguez, Jacqueline Santoyo, Eduardo Orozco, and Ana Sarabia. Regional Community, if they would be interested in jointly supporting a Cristo Rey school. “Our three groups had never worked together in this diocese before,” says Sister Kathryn Camacho, S.N.D. de N., the school’s founding principal. “Each group brings something different to the table.” Beside the three orders’ traditional commitment to education, each one brought its charism—its unique gift to the Church. Sr. Camacho hung banners inscribed with the words “Mercy, Goodness, Service.” The first faculty members quickly adopted those words as one phrase to “proclaim who we are,” says Sr. Camacho. “At all meetings, our call to prayer is ‘Shining Mercy, Goodness, and Service to all,’ and the response, ‘We are the light of the world.’ Where Mercy, Goodness, and Service has gone and continues to go is the work of the Spirit, because it goes through laypeople.” Laypersons have been partners here from the beginning. JHS alumni participated in the feasibility study and several now serve on the school’s board of directors and staff major volunteer efforts. “The school complements the JHS mission by serving a segment of youth that Jesuits are well-positioned to serve,” says John Lemmon, vice chair of the board and a CWS employer. Their passion for the cause helps them face Cristo Rey’s stiff financial challenges. “This [school] is a lifeboat,” says Lemmon. “There are kids here who otherwise would not graduate from high school. If they stay in this lifeboat, they’ll end up in college.” D edicated st u dents , f le x i b le f ac u lt y and sta f f C risto Rey Sacramento grapples with sustainability every day. Unlike tuition-driven schools, Cristo Rey Sacramento is externally supported, which makes fundraising especially critical in the growth years. Unexpected expenses, such as a $650,000 heating and air-conditioning system, strained the school’s budget early on. Subtracting work-study revenues and tuition charged from the full cost of a Cristo Rey education, which represents such basic expenses as teachers’ salaries and the food program, leaves a gap of $7,745 per student. Despite the fundraising pressures imposed by this gap, people in the community tell school leaders this educational model makes sense, and they appreciate that students learn more than academics—they develop composure and receive preparation for a professional life. Cristo Rey schools target the curriculum to their students’ needs; in Sacramento that means increasing their skills in fundamental math and literacy. In addition to bolstering academic capabilities, the faculty build up their students in other ways. “One student’s father was being deported, and she needed someone to pray with her and let her cry it out,” says English teacher Fran Wise. “These are the most amazing kids I’ve ever known,” adds theology teacher Joe Poggi. Despite economic hardships, frequent family relocations, and even gang threats, the students’ desire for an education is so strong they will commute 30 to 45 minutes to school, then spend from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in class and after-school activities. Such dedicated faculty members do wonders with very little, although they and their students could do even more with such classroom tools as “smart boards” (interactive electronic whiteboards that work with computers or projectors). The teachers also coach nine athletic teams on meager budgets, and they’ve converted a closet into a weight room. As the school’s enrollment grows toward its goal of 400, space will become an issue. “We’ll use portables for as long as we can and be prudent,” says Evans, “but we need to provide an adequate learning environment.” What makes all it all worthwhile is knowing that Cristo Rey schools give students an edge. Of 318 Cristo Rey graduates nationwide in 2007, 99 percent are enrolled in two- or four-year colleges. “If our students hadn’t come here, the chance of them dropping out of school could be as high as 60 percent,” says Sr. Camacho. “We can give them a future.” For more information, visit www.cristoreysacramento.org To make a donation, call Cristo Rey’s Development Office at (916) 733-2660 ext. 1211. MISSION summer 2008 19 A Mysterious, Miraculous, and Never-Ending Process by Dick Bushnell he contemporary meaning of the word conversion is derived from the classical Latin converto meaning to turn, and from the later ecclesiastical Latin meaning moral change, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. One of the best secular definitions of conversion was written by the American psychologist William James as part of “The Varieties of Religious Experience,” a lecture series he delivered in 1901-1902: “To be converted, to be regenerated, to receive grace, to experience religion, to gain assurance, are so many phrases that denote the process, gradual or sudden, by which a self hitherto divided, and consciously wrong inferior and unhappy, becomes consciously right superior and happy, in consequence of its firmer hold upon religious realities.” When Catholics speak of conversion, they need to consider the meanings which the word has within the Church. In his study “Conversion as a Human Experience,” Paul Robb, S.J., writes, “Conversion is not just entrance into the Church. Nor is conversion adequately understood as responding to the call of Christ in religious life followed by long years of perseverance.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines conversion 20 MISSION SUMMER 2008 as a “radical reorientation of the whole life away from sin and evil, and toward God. This change of heart or conversion is a central element of Christ’s preaching, of the Church’s ministry of evangelization, and of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.” The Catechism reminds us that a radical reorientation toward God is not always an instantaneous process, but one that is ongoing in Christian life. “Conversion,” it states, “is accomplished in daily life by gestures of reconciliation, concern for the poor, the exercise and defense of justice and right, by the admission of faults to one’s brethren, fraternal correction, revision of life, examination of conscience, spiritual direction, acceptance of suffering, endurance of persecution for the sake of righteousness.” Just how radical is this reorientation? Bernard Lonergran, S.J., offered this explanation: “When conversion is viewed as an ongoing process, at once personal, communal, and historical, it coincides with living religion.” Such conversion is “not merely a change or even a development; rather it is a radical transformation on which follows, on all levels of living, an interlocked series of changes and developments....A changed relationship with God brings about or follows changes that are personal, social, moral and intellectual….It reaches down into the roots of an individual’s affections, images, dreams, and choices....Such conversion is found in experience: the experience of blindness changing to seeing, the experience of a heart of stone...transformed into a heart of flesh, the experience of unfreedom gradually turned into the freedom of the sons and daughters of God.” When we hear of blindness changing to seeing, we recall the story in John’s Gospel of the man born blind: “One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.” Those words also found their way into “Amazing Grace”, America’s beloved hymn. It was written by John Newton, an Englishman whose own conversion is immortalized in the first two stanzas. For Newton, the process began on March 9, 1748, while he was captain of the Greyhound, a ship engaged in the African slave trade. One day Newton picked up a book he found on board, an English translation of The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis, a 15th-century monk. As he read, an “involuntary suggestion” arose in his mind: He began to wonder if following sinful passions resulted in a loss of grace—“the favour of Almighty God.” That same night, a violent storm struck, wrenching loose the ship’s planks and water poured in. When bailing proved futile, the crew plugged the gaps with bedding and their own clothing. The next morning, with the ship barely afloat, Newton remarked to a crew member: “If this will not do, the Lord have mercy on us!” Newton was, he later wrote, “instantly struck with my own words.” In effect, he had said that when all human effort proves insufficient it is only the mercy of God that can save. After two more days, the storm subsided and the ship was free of water. As Newton steered the Greyhound, he reasoned that the best way to proceed was to ask for the power of the Spirit and then start acting as though the Gospel were true. Newton’s conversion eventually led him to get married, to become an Anglican priest, and to write “Amazing Grace” in 1772. Newton’s initial conversion experience was no less dramatic than that of Aurelius Augustinus, who around 387 A.D. was deeply disgusted with his life. As St. Augustine laments in his Confessions: “When my most searching scrutiny had drawn up all my vileness from the secret depths of my soul and heaped it in my heart’s sight, a mighty storm arouse in me, bringing a mighty rain of tears....And I continued my miserable complaining: ‘How long, how long shall I go on saying tomorrow and again tomorrow? Why not now, why not have an end to my uncleaness this very hour?’…And suddenly I heard a voice from some nearby house, a boy’s voice or a girl’s voice, I do not know: but it was a sort of singsong, repeated again and again. ‘Take and read, take and read.’…I arose, interpreting the incident as quite certainly a divine command to open my book of Scripture...and in silence read the passage upon which my eyes first fell: Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy, but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences. I had no wish to read further, and no need. For in that instant…it was as though a light of utter confidence shone in all my heart, and all the darkness of uncertainty vanished away.” t. Augustine isn’t the only Christian who has been stirred by voices. Consider the case of Thomas Merton, who as a young man in 1940 was still struggling with his decision to join a religious order. While recovering from an appendectomy, Merton traveled to Cuba for a vacation. “I was in the Church of St. Francis at Havana. It was a Sunday....Up front, before the altar, there were rows and rows of children....It came time for the Consecration. The priest raised the Host, then he raised the chalice. When he put it down on the altar, suddenly a Friar....stood up in front of the children, and all at once the voices burst out: ‘Creo en Dios...I believe in God the Father Almighty, the creator of heaven and earth...’ The Creed. But that cry, ‘Creo en Dios!’ It was…a good big shout that came from all those Cuban children, a joyous affirmation of faith. “Then, as sudden as the shout and as definite, and a thousand times more bright, there formed in my mind an awareness, an understanding, a realization…of God made present by the words of Consecration in a way that made Him belong to me....It was as if I had suddenly been illuminated by being blinded by the manifestation of God’s presence.” Merton went on to become a Trappist monk and to write The Seven Storey Mountain from which those recollections are drawn. In my own case, I can only say that what I was reading at the time of my initial conversion had an immediate impact on my spiritual state. I was resting in a bed at Stanford Medical Center, where I was being treated for severe hypertension. It was Sunday, January 16, 2000. I was reading an introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola written by Joseph A. Tetlow, S.J.: “Into this world, Ignatius and his Companions introduced a spirituality that begins in a resounding affirmation: All comes from God, all moves under God’s governance and care, all returns to God, in and through Christ Jesus. Our first task is reverent gratitude.” That is all I remember reading, for I suddenly realized with blazing clarity the great truth of those words. What began that day led to a profound experience of healing as well as spiritual growth. I eventually became a convert, going through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and making a profession of faith to the Roman Catholic Church. Nearly three years ago, I started a new career as a lay partner of the California Province of the Society of Jesus. On my second day at work, it suddenly dawned on me—that it wasn’t just a job, but a ministry. So my conversion continues. The Jesuits, you see, have a long tradition of nurturing converts, a tradition that goes back to their founder, Ignatius Loyola, who experienced a conversion to God that continued for the rest of his life and changed the world in the process. Amazing grace, indeed! MISSION SUMMER 2008 21 Mothering with mindfulness, compassion, and grace by Denise Roy T hirty years ago, I set out to be a minister, and so I enrolled in the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley to get my Master of Divinity degree. I was a young married Catholic laywoman, one of only two women in a class of Jesuit seminarians. It was a great education in the Ignatian path of “finding God in all things.” It was also an experience of wonderful synchronicity when, on the evening that the men in my class were ordained as transitional deacons, I went into labor and gave birth to my first child. Now the mother of five, I realize that my dreams of ministering have come true in so many ways. Over these years, I have broken bread, poured grape juice, preached (I’ve done a lot of that), prayed, told stories, bestowed blessings, laid hands on the sick, and heard confessions (sometimes more than I wanted to hear!). I have been a parent, and these have been the sacraments of my daily life. They are simple, sacred acts. These are how I have mediated love, ministering to my own little congregation—children, spouse, family and friends. Motherhood also leaves stretch marks on us—in so many ways. I have been stretched physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. My limited notion of what constitutes a family has widened. Through great challenges and even greater love, my heart has grown to hold more than I ever thought possible. Motherhood continues to stretch me to this day, and I see no end in sight. It teaches lessons that many spiritual disciplines teach: the transforming effect of true presence, the importance of close attention, the need for deep compassion, the celebration of embodiment, the recognition of the sacred in all things, 22 mission summer 2008 and the power of community. As we let this vocation awaken our hearts and transform our lives, we walk a spiritual path. We discover that care for others as well as for ourselves is not a distraction from sacred practice but the very essence of it. “Momfulness” is the word I use for this spiritual practice of conscious mothering. I believe that everyone— men and women alike—can develop within them this awakened heart of mother-love. Sue Monk Kidd, in her beautiful book, The Secret Life of Bees, writes: “You have to find a mother inside yourself. We all do. Even if we already have a mother, we still have to find this part of ourselves inside.” Practicing Momfulness in our daily lives is a stance of loving, involving everything from the way we hold our children to the way we care for ourselves and for our world. We mobilize the fierce passion of a mother and work on behalf of all the children and of our planet. So I invite you to experience the spiritual practice of Momfulness, whether in the midst of sticky kisses or at the point of sheer exhaustion, at the moment when your heart is broken or at the point when it stretches wide open. Together let us cultivate a mindful, compassionate, mothering presence with ourselves, with our children, and with our world. Editor’s Note: Denise Roy is the author of two award-winning books: Momfulness (Jossey-Bass) and My Monastery Is a Minivan (Loyola Press). She received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Santa Clara University and an M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. She lives with her family in Santa Clara, Calif., and has a private practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist. Given this reality, your continued generosity is more important than ever. For our part, we promise to manage your gifts wisely and to put them to the best use for the greater glory of God. As you will see on the following pages and elsewhere in this special issue of Mission magazine, your gifts to the California Province and its ministries touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of people connected with our educational, pastoral, and social ministries. Our Jesuit-sponsored and endorsed schools and universities are shaping the hearts and minds of increasingly diverse student populations. Our pastoral ministries are fulfilling the spiritual needs of people through the sacraments, religious education, spiritual direction, and retreats. Our social ministries are helping poor and disadvantaged persons to improve the quality of their lives through service, advocacy, and empowerment programs. As we seek to multiply the impact of your gifts, the California Province is identifying new ministries which we deem worthy of start-up funding such as the Kino Border Initiative (see Province News, page 3). Likewise, our Province is actively supporting programs to foster and promote Ignatian spirituality among lay and religious partners who are associated with our ministries as employees, volunteers, students, or clients. In this era of fewer Jesuit priests and brothers, we rely increasingly upon our benefactors to help promote the works of the Society of Jesus. Through our Mission magazine, website, e-newsletter, and periodic letters, we strive to provide benefactors with information and inspiration. We invite you to share these communications with your family, friends, and coworkers so that they can learn about the good work being done by the Jesuits and their lay and religious partners in the California Province. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize a group of laypersons and a Jesuit who have been generously sharing their time and talents as benefactors and advisors to the Province. My thanks to the Advancement Leadership Council whose members are listed on page 26. (left) and Bernard Hubbard, S.J., meet Oliver Hardy (left) and John Wayne on the set of The Fighting Kentuckian, a film released by Republic Pictures in 1949. At that time, Fr. Harrington was rector-president of Loyola High School in Los Angeles while Fr. Hubbard, a noted Alaska explorer, was often on the lecture circuit. Wayne portrayed John Breen, a Kentucky soldier who fights in Alabama in the early 1800s, while Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy fame) did a solo comedic turn as Breen’s sidekick Willie Payne.
