NUMBER 1
A NEW TRADITION BEGINS
Dowling’s 47th Commencement ceremony was special this year for many
reasons, but mainly because it was hosted at the new Athletic Fields at our very
own Brookhaven Campus for the first time ever. Dowling undergraduate
students were able to hear words of advice from David McKay, President
and Chief Operating Officer of United States Aviation Underwriters, Inc.,
he received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
“We were honored to welcome David McKay as our
Commencement Speaker,” said Robert Gaffney, Dowling College
President. “Mr. McKay’s background in Aviation made him a perfect
speaker for the first ceremony that we hosted on our Brookhaven Campus,
which is home to our esteemed School of Aviation. I am glad that our Aviation
graduates were able to hear Mr. McKay speak at Commencement.”
Dowling College’s 2009 Undergraduate Valedictorian, Lauren Hemmerly,
was not only an outstanding student, but a testament to how perseverance and
overcoming adversity can result in success. Lauren graduated from Dowling with
a degree in Earth Science and a minor in Special Education, as an Honors student,
maintaining
a 4.0 GPA
m
throughout
her four years.

In 2004, she graduated

individuals with disabilities. Ever since receiving Max, Lauren has been an active
member of the Dowling College Community, representing Canine Companions for
Independence through demonstrations and Powerpoint presentations.
Graduate students were inspired by their Commencement speaker, Michael
Dowling, outstanding community activist and successful business leader, as
President and Chief Executive Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Graduate students and husband and wife, Alexandra and George Mougias, both
graduated together with an MBA in Finance. Every couple has a story to tell and
a history that is shared with their partner. The Mougias’ story is about the
challenges and struggles that they faced together and how despite it all
they believed that they could always be successful. They followed
the simple idea of being happy and doing things together as their
secret to a happy marriage.
After being married for a few years, they both felt like they needed to
grow academically and financially but didn’t want to cause a drift in their
relationship so they figured pursuing an MBA together would be the best
option for both of them. Each working long hours Monday to Friday, they wanted
a college that offered a weekend program. They researched Dowling College and
liked the accelerated MBA program and attended an open house to get a feel of
the College. As soon as they arrived on campus, they both knew they wanted to
attend. They especially appreciated the personal attention from Toni Loschiavo,
Assistant Dean, School of Business. The advantage of pursuing an MBA together
was that they both helped by teaching each other and pushed each other to do
their best. Achieving an MBA is an accomplishment that made both of them proud,
but, mostly, it made them feel confident that they can achieve anything as long as
they are united in their goals.
DOWLING COLLEGE BASEBALL SENIORS GRADUATE
AT SPECIAL CEREMONY AT LI DUCKS GAME
After missing their graduation, due to playing in the NCAA Tournament, three
seniors on the Dowling College Baseball team finally got a chance to don their
cap and gowns by graduating in a special ceremony prior to the Long Island
Ducks game versus the Somerset Patriots.
Ryan Gemma, Kevin McCormack, and David Wendt all missed out on their
chance to attend graduation as the Golden Lions were on their way to clinching
their first ever World Series appearance at the East Regionals at Franklin Pierce
University in Rindge, New Hampshire. However, the three seniors would not be
denied their chance to experience graduation.
In a ceremony held behind home plate at Citibank Park home of the Atlantic
League’s Long Island Ducks, Gemma, McCormack, and Wendt all received their
degrees. The three seniors were joined on the field by Head Coach Chris Celano
and Vice President for Athletics and Institutional Advancement Rick Cole Jr. The
trio received their degrees from Dowling College President, Robert J. Gaffney
and Ducks owner and Dowling College Trustee, Frank Boulton.
Wendt and McCormack graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration,
while Gemma earned a Bachelor of Arts.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
OF DOWLING COLLEGE
Dear Fellow Alumni,
While aggressively invested in our busy lifestyles, we
often neglect to take time to reflect on what has made
us what we are today. We seldom have the time to
remember the people and institutions, which have
supplied us, graciously, with knowledge and social
skills still relevant in our current daily routines, business
ventures, and personal lives. It is that which rests in
our past, which has molded our success and helps us
realize new goals for the future. As Dowling alumni,
we are blessed with fond memories of those who
taught us, sparked our imaginations, and connected
us with a world of opportunities. In these trying times,
it is important to reconnect with our communities, peers, and mentors in order
to ensure the future of that which has given us so much. With this in mind,
the Dowling Alumni Council has developed a Facebook page, which is linked
to the alumni page of the Dowling website. This social network is intended to
reconnect past alumni with each other, as well as, with the institution, which still
strives for the development of well educated, diversely cultured, and valuable
future graduates. This network is not only an excellent way to reconnect with the
institution but also serves as a platform for reuniting friends, posting resumes,
and networking with fellow members of the professional community. It is our
hope that increased involvement of alumni will serve as an example of Dowling’s
profound impact on its students beyond the completion of their degrees. I ask
that you join your fellow alumni on our Facebook page and reconnect.

LONG ISLAND EDUCATORS HONORED AT AWARDS DINNER
DOWLING COLLEGE AND NEWS 12 LONG ISLAND PAY TRIBUTE TO TWELVE EDUCATORS OF THE MONTH
6
On June 3, 2009, over 150 people
gathered at the Woodbury Country Club
to acknowledge the accomplishments
of the twelve recipients of the
Educators of the Month award,
presented by Dowling College and
News 12 Long Island. Earlier this
year, nominations were accepted
from schools throughout Nassau and
Suffolk counties, and a committee of
distinguished educators selected the
twelve winners. A series of video clips
were compiled, featuring the teachers
in the classrooms with their students,
and were aired on News 12 through the
school year. The awards dinner was the
culmination of the inspiring classrooms
visits, as a final way to praise the
educators with their colleagues and
family members present.
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling’s
School of Education says, “These twelve
educators have set themselves apart
from the many remarkable teachers
Long Island has to offer, and it is
an honor to provide them with the
educator of the month award for their
inspirational and outstanding service
as teachers.”
Nominations are currently being
sent out to all Long Island school
administrators for the 2009-2010
school year. “A special congratulations
to Educator of the Month winner,
DOWLING COLLEGE PARTNERED WITH ROCK AND WRAP IT UP
AND SUFFOLK COUNTY
REDUCING POVERTY FOOTPRINT AND CARBON FOOTPRINT
Dowling College partnered with Rock and Wrap It Up and Suffolk County to further
green and reduce poverty in the County. Dowling students who live in both the Oakdale
Residence Hall, located at the Rudolph Campus and the Brookhaven Residential Village,
located at the Brookhaven campus, donated and collected assets including non-perishable
food, toiletries, appliances, clothing, shelving and small furniture.
Rock and Wrap It Up! is a national anti-poverty think tank. Using greening tactics, the
organization develops and recovers food and other assets to be given to agencies fighting
poverty, increasing their budgets. This allows the agencies to hire more services such as
green- collar jobs training, tutors, social workers, job placement counselors and mental
health counselors to attack the cause of poverty.
In Suffolk County’s 2009 State of the County address, County Executive Steve Levy said,
“We embarked upon a Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. Another way we can care for
those in need will be through a not-for-profit program called Rock and Wrap It Up! where
we will coordinate with hotels and universities to ensure that food, toiletries and
other surplus items do not go into the waste stream, but rather to agencies that help
the less fortunate.”
Rock and Wrap It Up!, Suffolk County and Colleges with campuses in Suffolk County
first met in April 2009.

DONATION FROM NBTY HELPING
HANDS CHARITY SUPPORTS
DOWLING COLLEGE $2,000,000
SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Robert J. Gaffney, Dowling College President,
announced that Dowling College has partnered
with the NBTY Helping Hands Charity to create
a special $2,000,000 Dowling scholarship
program that will help recruit and retain
talented students who otherwise could not
afford to attend a private Long Island college.
“The NBTY Helping Hands Charity shares
the Dowling College vision of providing
deserving students with broad access to quality
higher education”, said Scott Rudolph, NBTY
Chairman & CEO and Vice Chair of the Dowling
College Board of Trustees. “We look forward to
other community minded organizations and
individuals generously joining us in our support
of Dowling and the students we serve,” said
Mr. Rudolph.
The gift from NBTY Helping Hands Charity
will add many additional scholarships to the
more than $10,000,000 in scholarships new and
present Dowling students are already receiving
for the 2009/2010 academic year.
“We thank Scott Rudolph and NBTY Helping
Hands Charity. Today more than ever a college
degree must be available to students who
desire to achieve their goals in career and life.
Through this generous support of scholarships
there will be a most positive impact on the
lives of students, their families and their
communities,” said President Gaffney.

horizon for the School of Aviation and Major Robert Smith, who played
an integral part in shaping Dowling’s aviation program in its early
years, shared his memories and thoughts on the N.I.F.A. Flight Team.
He also donated invaluable
memorabilia to the School of
Aviation so the College will
always have a historic record
of the successes and national
recognition the Flight team
brought to the College. Current
students and the staff from the
School of Aviation were also
on hand to network with the
program’s alumni.

DOWLING COLLEGE’S
WILLIAM OLIVER, M.S., ’08
William Oliver, has been accepted into one of the
most prestigious Ph.D. programs in the country at
the Maxwell School at the Syracuse University. The
Maxwell School is a graduate school of social science
with a unique multidisciplinary character that cuts
across traditional departmental lines. The Maxwell
School only takes five people per year. He will be

with an area of concentration in gender studies,
while tying in conflict resolution. At Dowling, Will was a secondary
education major. Will explained that the social science courses that
he had to take at Dowling truly sparked his interest in Sociology. “Dr.
Nathalia Rogers, Associate Professor of Sociology, really played a large role
in my success, through her interesting classes, and in her enthusiasm in
me pursuing my Ph.D.” In many ways, Will’s career is a direct outcome
of Dowling’s efforts to stir him into a Ph.D program. “I am really excited
about the Maxwell School. I feel like I will fit well there, and the faculty
and students seem great, said Will. The Maxwell School also just
informed Will that they are awarding him a Fellowship for his 1st and
4th years, which is a high honor.

STEPHANIE RUBINO
Stephanie Rubino, a graduate student at Dowling
majoring in Secondary Education, Global Studies,
recently visited Paris this past July with Dr. Nathalia
Rogers, Associate Professor of Sociology, to present a
joint paper at a very prestigious conference; the 2009
Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement
of Socio-Economics that took place at an elite French
research
h university;
i
it Universite Sciences Po. It is a very rare opportunity
at Dowling to have students co-present papers with professors at
a prestigious international conference. The other unique aspect of
Stephanie’s story is that her mother , Carolyn Scheidt, B.S., ‘90, turns
out to be a Dowling alumna. She is now working as a consultant to
various hedge funds. Dowling is proud to have a second generation
Dowling student who went to Paris to present about her own advanced
research. “The small classes at Dowling made it an enjoyable experience
for my graduate studies,” she said. Stephanie enjoyed taking two classes
with Professor Rogers and had the opportunity to present her paper,
where Professor Rogers then suggested for Stephanie to submit the
paper for the conference together.
KEVIN REGULA, ’81
Kevin Regula, Dowling College Class of ’81 retired as Lt. Commander from
the U.S. Navy in 1997. As a Navy pilot Kevin’s missions took him to just about
every continent on earth including several trips to Antarctica. When he left
the Navy he joined the NASA Space Shuttle team where today he works at
Kennedy Space Center instructing astronauts and flight controllers.
To most of us Kevin’s career would be a dream but “the best years of my
life were those I spent at Dowling,” Kevin who earned a Dowling B.S. in
Aeronautics and Management said. “I met nice people, had terrific professors
and enjoyed the beautiful campus.” He also greatly appreciated Dowling’s
proximity to world class facilities such as Long Island’s MacArthur Airport
where he could easily jump in a plane and take off.
Kevin is a Dowling graduate with a long list of accomplishments that took
him from Long Island to Iceland, from Bermuda to the space program. His
three children Cristina, Maria and Kevin Jr. (KJ) can be very proud of him.
MARY JANE HAYES, ’66
Mary Jane Hayes, ’66, Dowling’s first alumni director,
recently had a children’s book published. Her first
children’s book, Emma’s House of Sound is a tribute to all
deaf children, who can and do succeed. Limelight Theatre
in St. Augustine, also asked Mary Jane to write a play.
She had a sold out performance and continues to write
for the Emma series. Based on a true story, the play tells
the story of Emma, a deaf girl, who faces the challenges
of attending public school and trying to communicate with her classmates.
This heartwarming play shows the importance of accepting others for who
they are and the joy of finding unexpected friends. To learn more visit: www.

GENE MANZO, ’98 - 1998 STUDENT OF THE YEAR
Gene Manzo, an accountant at Doyle, Lauro, CPA PLLC in Smithtown
was the SGA Student of the year in 1998 owes a great deal to Ronnie
MacDonald, Assistant V.P. for Student Services, who “helped me out big time.”
Gene credits Ronnie with keeping him on track when he transferred
from Suffolk Community College to Dowling to study accounting.
“Dowling provided me with a great education,” said Gene, who served
as Co-President of Dowling’s Accounting Club, which he helped bring
back to campus when he was a student.
Since earning his accounting degree, Gene has done well as a
successful Long Island businessman. Over the years he has shared
his experiences and offered advice to students when he returns
to campus.
Over a decade after his graduation, Gene’s daughter Melissa, B.A., ’08,
is close to earning her masters in education at Dowling - just another very
special reason why Gene Manzo is still close to his alma mater.
SCOTT MANUEL, ’03 - KEEPING OUR WATER PURE
Scott Manuel was looking for a good college with a comfortable
educational environment when he transferred to Dowling College from
Virginia Commonwealth. At Dowling, he found what he was looking for
with small classes, approachable faculty and the opportunity to fulfill
his dream career of becoming a chemist.
Today Scott who lives in Riverhead is a chemist doing his part to
make Long Island a safer and better place to live. At the Suffolk County
Public and Environmental Health Lab where Scott and several other
Dowling alumni work, he makes sure the water we drink and swim in
meets the high standards of purity we depend on.
Scott remains close to his Dowling College family. He is always
available to mentor a student or answer a former professor’s call. Each
semester Dowling professor John Tanacredi, Professor of Earth and
Marine Science, brings his Environmental Pollution class to Scott’s
lab. These visits to a working lab offer students the opportunity to see
first hand how seriously scientists work to provide us with safe drinking
water and to protect us from the menace of hazardous materials.
Scott Manuel is just one of many scientists with a Dowling College
degree who make our world a little bit better each day through their
good work and mentorship.
ANNE OSTERMEYER-FAY, ’88 - RESEARCH
SCIENTIST
“Dowling College was such a close knit community that it made me
feel at ease from the first day I started. This in turn helped me become
an independent person,” said Anne Ostermeyer-Fay.
In 1988 Anne took her new Dowling College undergraduate degree
to Stony Brook University to begin her career as a research scientist.
At Stony Brook she earned her Masters and has spent the last decade
focused on important cancer research.
Author of 5 journal articles and co-author of an additional 14 articles,
Anne fondly remembers her days as a Dowling student. She enjoyed
student life, from the parties on the Great Lawn to the quite hours she
spent studying on the beautiful shore of the Connetquot River. Anne
fondly remembers Dowling as a place filled with friendly students and
professors, a place where you could drop by to visit a professor without
an appointment. Those chats with her professors helped to prepare her
for a career where she too counsels students as she teaches them to do
research and experiments.
Along with being a successful research scientist, Anne is the proud
mother of wonderful three and a half year old Alexandra, who is also
TONY, “THE COACH: FIORENTINO, B.A., ’71

originally a high school teacher and basketball coach in New York. He
began color commentating in 1984, and knew since high school that
he wanted to be a commentator. After Tony graduated from Dowling,
he received his masters at the University of Bridgeport. Tony takes four
to five hours to prepare before a game. He and his partner, Eric Reid,
consider themselves the most prepared duo in the NBA. He is happy
to be working with a terrific organization that still helps out in the
community and has a true commitment, that is always growing.

ANDREA HASSELL, M.S., ’09
Andrea has published a book that will appeal to audiences who
enjoy stories about the animal world. Readers can be entertained while
learning valuable life lessons in Andrea Hassell’s picture book, Anthony,
the Ant!
Anthony wants to eat cherries with his friends; however, he has to
overcome some obstacles in order to meet them. In the end, he realizes
that he has to have faith, remain focused and follow through with his
goal! This book will entertain children, but will also gently impart
important life lessons about the value of determination, conviction,
and faith in oneself. For the adults, it contains a useful “Parent/Teacher
Discussion Guide” that will help initiate dialogue with young readers
about what they have learned.
“We are proud to have one of our alumni recognized as such a talent.
A picture book is an excellent medium for Andrea to impart all that she
has learned while at Dowling College to many children and parents,”
said Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of the School of Education.
Anthony, the Ant is the first character book of The Butterfly Series™ by
Andrea Hassell. It is her goal to encourage students and parents through
her books. For more information, log on to www.thebutterflyseries.com.

Dowling College Student Athletes Proven Champions in
Academics, Athletics, Community and Life
The Golden Lions had one of their most successful seasons in recent memory during the 2008-2009 campaign, with six teams advancing to NCAA Tournament play. The Dowling
Baseball team clinched the East Regional Championship, sending them to the College World Series for the first time in program history. Additionally, the Men’s Soccer team reached
the Championship Final for the second time in three years after having won it all in 2006. The Volleyball team won the ECC Championship for the fifth straight season and reached
the NCAA Tournament for the 7th straight year. The Golf team took part in the NCAA East Regional while the Women’s Rowing team competed in their fourth straight NCAA National
Championship Regatta. The Dowling Softball team also went on to compete in the NCAA Regional.
Overall, Dowling placed 10 student-athletes on All-American Teams with 49 making AllConference teams. Gabriel Duran of the Baseball team received NCBWA and Daktronics
National Pitcher of the Year, while Maja Potpara of the Volleyball team was named the
AVCA National Freshman of the Year. In addition, the USILA named Joe Biondolillo of the
Men’s Lacrosse team the Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year. On the sideline, coaches
Kerri McCabe, Joe Pellicane and John DiRico each earned Conference Coach of the
Year honors in their respective sports.
Off the field, 3 student-athletes earned the ECC 2008-2009 Scholar-Athlete of the Year
award in their respective sports, including the ECC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In
addition, 1 student-athlete earned Academic All-American honors.
Dowling athletes pride themselves not only by excelling on the field
and in the classroom, but also in the community by raising money
and awareness for various causes. This past year, the Golden Lions
went on to make history with the Wishmakers Initiative as they
raised $17,170.90 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the most raised
by any Division II institution in NCAA history. Through the efforts of
student-athletes and the community, the money raised was enough
to grant 3 wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
