DC: Do you have any new and exciting
ideas in strengthening alumni relations?
DKK: I want our alumni to share
their successes with our current students so our students to benefit from
the strength of our 35, 000 alumni. I
want our alumni to remember their
wonderful experiences and help recreate those memories for our current
students. The success of our programs today strengthen the value of
the degrees earned by our alumni,
and that idea is interchangeable. I
want to encourage alumni attendance at various Dowling events. The
Dowling Library is developing a project to document the 1968-69 school
year in commemoration of the 40th
anniversary of the college. They are
asking alumni to contribute their recollections, and memorabilia. They
are seeking copies of the Lion’s Voice

CATCHING UP WITH DR. DANIEL J. MALONEY, B.A., ‘76
Marian College has named Dr. Daniel J. Maloney as its
founding provost, the No. 2 administrator at the college. A
professor in Marian’s School of Education Leadership Studies graduate program since 2001, Maloney is the 2007-08
President of Marian’s Faculty Senate and was co-chair of
this year’s presidential inauguration and convocation. “I am
deeply honored and humbled by my selection as the college’s first provost,” Maloney said in a Marian news release.
“In my seven years at Marian College, I have never been more
impressed with the deep belief in the mission and core values that is so widespread among the members of the Marian
College community.”
Maloney served as executive vice president/chief operating officer and professor of educational leadership and counseling psychology at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s
Twin Cities Campus in Minneapolis from 1997-2001. He was
dean of the graduate school and associate professor of education and counseling psychology at Immaculata University
(PA) from 1994 to 1997.
He also served at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s
Winona campus from 1985-1994 as vice president for student
development, interim president and executive vice president,
vice president for finance and administration, and founder
and Executive Director of the De La Salle Language Institute.
“I commend Dr. Maloney for his decision to serve the
institution as provost at this time in its history,” says Dr.
Josefina Castillo Baltodano, Marian president. “Dr. Maloney
brings with him a wealth of experience in higher education
administration. His addition to the administrative team is
very exciting.”
CATCHING UP WITH LESLEA SNYDER, B.S., ’03
CATCHING UP WITH JOSEPH M. BALCUK, M.S., ’05
Since graduating from Dowling, I have been working for the
New York State Senate. I started my career in public service
with Senator Ken LaValle in Albany as the Assistant Director
of the Senate Higher Education Committee writing legislation, advising the Senator on policy issues, and meeting with
college students from around the state. After three years on
Senator LaValle’s staff, I am now in the Senate’s Long Island
Regional Press and Communications office in Hauppauge.
In this new role, I communicate legislative events that occur in Albany to Long Island communities and show how
new initiatives and policies affect our daily lives.
By attending Dowling College, I was offered the
freedom to think for myself and had the opportunity to
learn from Dowling’s dedicated and knowledgeable professors. I left Dowling with not only the background necessary to succeed in the workplace, but the ability and
confidence to stand out from everyone else. When I tell
colleagues and friends about my unique experiences I
had at Dowling, it is always with immense pride. Because
of these reasons, I will always consider Dowling to be
one of the best institutions of
higher education.
Joseph M. Balcuk spent the past seven years devising a
way to revolutionize the experience children have in the classroom. “I wanted to devise a way to bring what entertains students outside school into the classroom,” Mr. Balcuk stated.
After years of tedious work, he gained recognition by earning
an invitation to one of the country’s
largest mathematics conferences.
A local educational company,
Precision Mathematics Corporation, nationally released the educational invention of the Long Island
mathematician. The Corporation
gathered investors from around the
country to make public “The Spoils
of Civilization.”
This winter Joseph was chosen to
present his research and invention
at the National Conference for the
Advancement of Mathematics in Dallas, TX. Precision Mathematics Account Executive Katherine Knoepffler stated, “The
true genius behind the invention is the versatility to all grade
levels.”
The game introduces players’ to a real world simulation
in which mathematics is used everyday for survival. It has
proven to increase student understanding of how social interaction creates economic trends. In addition, it is linked
to the Internet website www.precisionmath.com, for strategic
online classroom play. During a typical school year, students
watch for inflation and recession as they invest in a real-time
stock market.
To read more about how these products will expand the
walls of the classroom visit www.THEMERBS.com or write to
[email protected]. Precision Mathematics Corp. and
Joseph have agreed to provide discounts on all materials for
all Dowling staff, students, and alumni. Please mention your
Dowling affiliation in any inquiries to learn how your classroom can benefit.

ENJOY THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF WEST AFRICA IN THE LOFT THEATRE
AT DOWLING COLLEGE’S PRODUCTION OF THE EPIC OF SUNJATA
The Loft Theatre at Dowling College is proud to present a unique, original adaptation of the West African Epic of Sunjata; a spectacle of drama, dance and music featuring the authentic griot Abdoulaye “Djoss” Diabate and his band from Mali. Directed
and choreographed by Tracy Bersley and adapted by Ms. Bersley and the Loft’s Artistic Director Andrew Karp, the Epic of Sunjata is a 13th century oral folktale. This
folktale is still sung in Mali and around the world and recounts the miraculous coming of age of a seemingly crippled boy, Sunjata.
The Epic of Sunjata features live music, under the direction of Dowling faculty member and guitarist David Racanelli, world renowned West African singer/griot, Abdoulaye “Djoss” Diabate, one of Africa’s most charismatic singers and accomplished
guitarists with a smile that could light up a whole city. With a cast of eight, including costumes by Loft’s resident designer and Dowling faculty member Elissa Iberti,
the Epic of Sunjata promises to be a joyous, foot-stomping, heart-wrenching spectacular that will light up the hearts of audiences.

The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling
College Presents The Living Classroom
The Anthony Giordano Gallery is pleased to
announce an exhibition of the contemporary
textile-based artist Kimberley Hart. Ms. Hart’s
multi-media sculptures and installations explore the darker side of childhood experience
by applying kitschy folk traditions of textile art
to more ominous and unsettling subject matter.
Although her work often seems innocent and
charming at first glimpse, it frequently delves
into disagreeable and psychologically fraught
aspects of girlhood.
The “Living Classroom” is organized in conjunction with the college’s course Contemporary Art, offered by the Visual Arts Department.
This class includes traditional art history lectures and New York gallery and museum visits
as well as collaborations and interactions with
an artist selected specifically for this exhibition.
Located at the corner of Idle Hour Boulevard
and Biltmore Avenue in Oakdale, The Anthony
Giordano Gallery at Dowling College is dedicated to exhibiting and promoting contemporary,
innovative and experimental work by established, unaffiliated and emerging artists as well
as artists primarily from the New York tri-state
metropolitan area.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday
12:00 pm to 4:00 pm Admission is free. For more

A Field of Dreams
Brookhaven Athletic Complex in Final Stages
By Melissa Perry
The stands have been installed, the light poles
have been erected, and turf has been laid as the
building of the Athletic Complex at Brookhaven
continues for the anticipated Spring opening.
Nearly forty years in the making, the $12.5 million initiative includes the building of a multipurpose stadium and a baseball and softball
complex. The multi-purpose stadium, which will
host lacrosse and soccer games, will have a seating capacity of 2,500, while the baseball field will
seat 750, and the softball field, 500. All fields are
composed of FieldTurf, a synthetic turf system
in place at many professional and college facilities across the
country.
Golden Lions Field will add a new dimension to the athletics world as well as life on campus. For the first time in program history the Golden Lions have a place to call home and,
with events and games, held on their own turf, the complex is a
source of pride not only for athletics, but for the entire College
Community. In addition, the fields will be used by several local
community organizations to host tournaments and games as
well as provide a venue for camps and clinics.
DowlingSpring08.indd 8
The Complex is set to open its doors on March 1 with a baseball doubleheader against the NE-10’s Bentley College and a
men’s lacrosse game against the two-time defending National
Champion LeMonye College Dolphins. Softball will host their
