Downton Optimist Invitation for Oratorical Context
Cherokee Middle students received an invitation to be part of the Downtown Optimist Club’s annual oratorical contest
held on March 23. Students who won at the Downtown Optimist Club continued on to the zone competition held on
April 11. Winners then continue to the final round at the district competition to be held on May 2. Students who
place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the district competition will receive a $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 College Scholarship and
plaque. This year’s topic is: "How My Optimism Will Help Me Press on the Greater Achievements of the Future".
Four students from Cherokee participated in the first competition.
Zaira De La Cerda and Yahir Marinez Reynoso. were part of the zone oratorical contest on April 11. Yahir Martinez
Reynoso. will represent Cherokee Middle at the District Conference to defend his first place title for a scholarship

Los Optimistas del Centro de Madison nos invitan a un Concurso Oratoria
Estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia Cherokee fueron invitados a tomar parte del Concurso de Oratoria del Club
de Optimistas del Centro de Madison el 23 de marzo. Los ganadores pasaron a la competición del área el 11 de
abril. Aquellos que salieron victoriosos pasarán al último round, la competencia del distrito entero este 2 de mayo.
Los estudiantes que salgan en 1er, 2do, y 3er lugar en la competencia del distrito recibirán becas para educación
superior de $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 respectivamente, y una placa. El tema de este año es: "Cómo mi
Optimismo me Estimulará a Alcanzar las Metas más Grandes del Futuro." Cuatro estudiantes de Cherokee
participaron en el primer concurso.
Zaira De La Cerda y Yahír Martínez Reynoso tomaron parte del concurso de oratoria del área el 11 de abril. Yahír
Martínez Reynoso representará a la Escuela Cherokee en la Conferencia del Distrito para defender su título de

Dress for Spring and Dress for School
Many of us will start to put away our sweaters and coats in order to embrace the changing of
seasons. We know that for middle school students that there is a strong connection between
fashion and self-identity. Please note that we encourage students to express themselves but
attire must be school appropriate, they should be dressed comfortably and dressed prepared
for learning. Discretion is advised as it relates to short shorts/skits, low cut tops or tank tops. If
you child comes to school in clothing that is overly revealing, distracting or promotes negative
images, they will be IMMEDIATELY asked to change or call home to ask parents to bring

Con el cambio de estación ya estamos empezando a guardar nuestros abrigos y sweaters. Para los
estudiantes de escuela intermedia existe una fuerte conexión entre estilo e identidad. Normalmente fomentamos
la expresión de todos los estudiantes, pero hay que notar que durante clases la vestimenta tiene que ser
adecuada para la escuela; cómoda y que contribuya al aprendizaje. Recomendamos prudencia en lo que constan
faldas y shorts cortos, camisetas y blusas que revelen el pecho. Si su hijo viene a la escuela con vestimenta
reveladora, que fomente imágenes negativas, o que distraiga, se le exigirá INMEDIATAMENTE cambiarse o

African American History Bowl - 2015
Sponsored by 100 Black Men Organization and MMSD

Every year all the middle schools in Madison choose three students to study and learn the history of African
Americans using a wonderful book written by Henry Louis Gates Jr. At Cherokee Middle School the three students
who studied for months were, Janessa Bingham, Alexandria Augustine and Khadijah Murphy.
The African American History Bowl Competition was held on April 11. The competition included all 12 middle schools
in Madison. Our students won their two rounds of questioning and advanced to the Championship Round. Cherokee
won 2nd place! The girls did a wonderful job. The winning team will be advancing to the National Championship
in Houston this June. Cherokee Middle School also had the most number of spectators in attendance at the
competition and because we had the most number of spectators, we were awarded $300 from The 100 Black Men
Organization. We will be able to use this money to celebrate with a pizza party with those that came to support our
students at the competition.
Our students will be recognized at the School Board Meeting on Monday, April 27th. Excellent job ladies. We are all
proud of you!
Copa de Historia AfroAmericana - 2015

Cada año, cada escuela intermedia de Madison escoge a 3 estudiantes para especializarse en historia
AfroAmericana estadounidense utilizando un maravilloso libro por Henry Louis Gates Jr. Las 3 alumnas de la
Escuela Intermedia Cherokee que estudiaron por meses son: Janessa Bingham, Alexandria Augustine y Khadijah
Murphy.
La Copa de Historia AfroAmericana se realizó el 11 de abril. La competencia incluyó todas las 12 escuelas
intermedias en Madison. ¡Nuestras alumnas ganaron sus dos rounds de preguntas y avanzaron la Round de
Campeonato, ganando el 2do lugar! Las chicas estuvieron fenomenales. El equipo avanza al Campeonato
Nacional en Houston en junio. La Escuela Intermedia Cherokee tuvo la mayor cantidad de fans en la multitud, y
por esta razón la Organización 100 Black Men nos otorgó $300. Gracias a esto podremos celebrar con una fiesta de
pizza con todos aquellos que vinieron a apoyar a nuestras chicas en la competencia.
Nuestras alumnas serán mencionadas durante la Reunión de la Junta Directiva el lunes 27 de abril. Buen trabajo,
chicas. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de Uds!

What is Arts Integration?
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts defines arts integration as an approach to teaching in which students
construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which
connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.
Visiting Artist Visits 6th Grade Classrooms
On March 25th Gottschalk and Bennett’s homerooms welcomed a visiting artist/teacher from the Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts, Jamin Carter. He presented a lesson for students and district leaders to demonstrate how arts
integration can be used to develop critical thinking skills in the arts and in traditional content areas. He taught a
lesson called, “Reading Portraits as Biographies: Observe, Infer, Inquire. He asked students to examine numerous
portraits and notice similarities and differences. He taught them elements of portraits as well as how to read the
portraits to tell a story. Students who participated could tell you about the significance of the subject(s) facial
expression, focal point, gesture, clothing, setting and object(s). He helped us all to see that reading portraits helps
students activate and build background knowledge of, construct understanding of, and reflect on historical and literary
figures across the curriculum.
Cherokee 6th Grade Welcomes Professional Artists and Arts Integration
Cherokee 6th grade is excited and grateful to be working with professional artists on three arts integration units this
spring.
The Gottschalk, Bennett and Hardy team will welcome Remy Fernández who will teach a unit entitled, “Get Down
Stand Up:Dancing the Living History of Hip-Hop.” Remy Fernández, an award-winning Hip Hop choreographer, will
have students discuss the historical origins of Hip-Hop, learn the basics of four styles of Hip-Hop dance, and perform
their skills and knowledge in a culminating event.
The Jensen, Kenyon and Alfonso team will welcome Alexis London who will teach a
unit entitled, “Understanding Identity, Cultivating Inclusion with Portraiture. Ms.
London, a community artist, will study work of contemporary artists and how their art
expresses themselves and the world around them. She’ll be focusing on the art of
Romano Johnson a local professional artist.
The Mancilla, Schmid and Gadau team will welcome Karen Olivo who will teach a
unit entitled, Becoming the Dream: Dramatic Characterizations of the struggle for
Civil Rights. Karen Olivo, a Tony Award-winning actress will lead students through
a personalized re-creation of the March on Washington using music and visual
elements while highlighting the fight for racial equality.
This opportunity is free of charge and was made possible by the grant, Any Given
Child, which was awarded to MMSD, The Madison Overture Center and the Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Laurie Fellenz, the Fine Arts
Coordinator for the district has been instrumental in working on this grant and inviting
Cherokee teachers and students to participate. Erica Gottschalk, Dawn Schmid and
Lynn Tofte have received training in Arts Integration and have been using the arts to
deepen students’ understanding of math, science, history and the arts in their
classroom practices. It is with great excitement that we welcome professional artists
to our 6th grade classrooms.

Artistas Invitados visitan los salones de 6 Grado
El 25 de marzo los salones-hogar de Gottschalk y Bennett dieron la bienvenida al profesor y artista Jamin Carter del
Centro Kennedy para las Artes Escénicas. El dió una lección para estudiantes y docentes del distrito, demostrando
como utilizar la Integración con el Arte para desarrollar un razonamiento analítico en las artes y en materias
tradicionales. Su lección se tituló “Interpretando Retratos Como Si Fueran Biografías: Observando, Deduciendo,
Investigando." Les pidió a los alumnos examinar varios retratos, notando similitudes y diferencias. Luego les enseñó
aspectos y cómo interpretar los retratos para contar una historia. Los alumnos participantes fueron capaces de
analizar los rasgos, punto de enfoque, gesto, vestimenta, escenario y objeto(s) de su(s) sujeto(s). Esto nos ayudó a
ver que analizando retratos ayuda a los estudiantes a activar y desarrollar su conocimiento, comprensión, y habilidad
para reflexionar sobre personajes históricos y literarios del currículo escolar.

El 6 Grado de Cherokee está contento y agradecido de poder colaborar con artistas profesionales esta primavera en
3 Unidades integradas con el arte.

con un evento donde podrán demostrar su habilidad y conocimiento de este movimiento cultural.

AV Club Visits the Madison Public Library Bubbler

Cherokee’s AV club had an opportunity to visit the Bubbler at the Madison Public Library. It was a very good
opportunity for us to learn more about computers, programs and making video games. We used the engine Unreal
Development Kit (UDK) to design our own video game setting. We had lots of fun together at the Bubbler. We would
like to thank Mr. Mancilla, Mr. Belz, the people at the Bubbler, and MSCR. The opportunity gave us a chance to be
more open minded about technology. We’re looking forward to go on more field trips and experience new things and
meet new people.

El club de AV de Cherokee tuvo la oportunidad de visitar el programa Bubbler en la biblioteca pública de Madison.
Fue una muy buena oportunidad para nosotros para aprender más acerca de las computadoras, los programas y
hacer juegos de video. Se utilizó el motor Unreal Development Kit (UDK) para diseñar nuestro propio diseño de
videojuegos. Nos divertimos mucho juntos en el programa. Nos gustaría dar las gracias al Sr. Mancilla, el Sr. Belz, la

AV Club Receives a BYFY Grant

Recently, the AV Club at Cherokee Heights Middle School received a grant from the By Youth For Youth (BYFY)
foundation in order to enhance the equipment, software, and workstations used by Cherokee students. Students in AV
are very grateful to have the privilege to work with the equipment that will be purchased with the grant money
generously provided by the BYFY. The grant is sponsored by Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods, United Way of Dane County,
Dane County Youth Commission, and the City of Madison. The students will be able to produce more intricate videos
at an increased number of workstations. Students will use the new technology in order to enhance the Common Core
st
curriculum and continue developing 21 century skills. The students at Cherokee would like to thank By Youth For
Youth for their contribution.

Pedido General por Carpetas de 7,6 cm con Anillos
Recientemente, el club de AV en Cherokee Heights Middle School recibió una subvención de la fundación By Youth
For Youth (BYFY) con el fin de mejorar el equipo, programas y puestos de trabajo utilizados por los estudiantes de
Cherokee. Los estudiantes de AV estan muy agradecidos de tener el privilegio de trabajar con el equipo que se
comprará con el dinero de las subvenciones generosamente proporcionado por el BYFY. La subvención es
patrocinada por Oscar Mayer / Kraft Foods, United Way del Condado de Dane, Comisión Juvenil del Condado de

“Right now, fewer than one in five bachelor’s degrees in
engineering or computer science are earned by women.
Fewer than three in ten workers in science and engineering
are women. … That means we’ve got half the field - or
half our team we’re not even putting on the field.”

Thanks to a grant award from the Foundation for Madison
Schools, Cherokee Endowment Fund, a group of girls from
all grade levels is being introduced to basic robot
concepts that includes science, math, technology, and
engineering. They have been meeting after school to
build and program Boe-Bot Robots.
The students are learning how to write commands for the Boe-Bot so it performs a variety of
tasks: running a maze on the floor, following a line, navigating a square path, and directing
LEDs to blink on and off.
A video of our young ladies and their robots will be shown at the
Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools Circle of Friends Luncheon on
Tuesday, May 12th.
We would like to thank our Cherokee Endowment Fund
committee members for agreeing to fund this valuable
experience.

Durante la Feria de Ciencia de la Casa Blanca 2014, el Presidente Obama dijo:

Gracias a una beca otorgada de la Fundación para las Escuelas de
Madison y el Fondo de Donaciónes de Cherokee, se está
presentando conceptos básicos de robótica a un grupo de chicas de
todos los grados; que incluye ciencia, matemática, tecnología e
ingeniería. Se han estado reuniendo después de la escuela para
construir y programar Robots “Boe-Bot.”
Estas alumnas están aprendiendo a escribir comandos para el Boe-Bot para ser capaz de desempeñar
diversas tareas: pasar por un laberinto en el piso, seguir una línea, navegar un camino cuadrado y
dirigiendo LEDs que se prenden y apagan.

Orchestra Year End News
It has been a wonderful time making music with the strings students of Cherokee this year! Students have
done a fine job of developing their playing skills and learning a variety of music. We are busy preparing
music for our spring concerts and enjoying the time we have together for the remainder of the school year.
There are some things to note to prepare for these events and to prepare for year-end activities. Please
note the information listed below:
Upcoming Concerts: These are corrections to the previous listing in the orchestra handbook. All
concerts are on Wednesday evenings this school year. All concert attire guidelines are expected to be
followed for these events.
7th Grade Music Concert: Wednesday, May 20, 2015 7 p.m. / 6:30 p.m. tuning and line-up in the orchestra
room.
6th Grade Music Concert: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 7 p.m./6:30 p.m. tuning and lineup in the orchestra room.
8th Grade Music Concert: Wednesday, June 3, 2015 7 p.m./6:30 p.m. tuning and lineup in the orchestra room.
*Students who have stored rented instruments, please make sure that you have your
instrument rented through the first week of June…class activities will continue during
this time and instruments will be needed.
*Practice records will be collected through the week of your child’s concert or until all playing
tests/assignments are complete.
*Students with SCHOOL RENTED INSTRUMENTS: Check-ins for the end of the school year will be
done in class from June 3-5th- like a locker clean-out. Remove your personal items, rosin, etc. and clean
out cases. All instruments must be returned, even if you are planning to rent a school instrument for use
during the summer. Instruments must be checked over by Ms. Selbee and documented.
*Summer instrument rentals are available: Forms will be available from Ms. Selbee in May and will be
accepted until no later than June 1st. Forms and money turned in after this time cannot be processed.
Fees are: $20.00 for Grade 6 and $70.00 for Grades 7 & 8. Fee waivers are available per request and
qualification. Students are encouraged to continue to hone their playing skills over the summer; to play for
fun and be ready to jump right in next fall!
*Ask Ms. Selbee if you have questions about some of the wonderful, fun summer music camps available
in the southern WI area. Also ask if you have questions about some books you can purchase or music to
look up online to play this summer!
*Lastly, thanks to the 8th grade orchestra students for their work and dedication to orchestra at
Cherokee…you will be missed!!!

¡Pasamos un tiempo maravilloso tocando música con los alumnos de instrumentos de cuerda en Cherokee
este año! Ellos mejoraron su habilidad y aprendieron a tocar música diversa. Estamos ocupados
preparando música para los conciertos de primavera y disfrutando juntos el tiempo que nos queda este
año. Quedan aún algunos detalles para estar listos para estos conciertos y actividades de fin de año.

Próximos Conciertos: Estas son correcciones de la lista original del manual de orquesta. Todos

We will be conducting the farewell during the school day with the ceremony taking place from 10:30 am to 11:30
am on Wednesday, June 10 at Cherokee. Due to significant seating limits, we will continue the practice of only
allowing TWO guests per student. Guests will receive tickets for the event at Cherokee on the day of the event.
The “student only” dance will last until the normal dismissal time of 2:37 pm and then students can take regular
transportation home. 8th grade students will not have school on Thursday, June 11, 2015.

Planning is underway for this year’s 8 grade promotion celebration which will take place on Wednesday, June 10.
Currently we are looking for parent volunteers to help with decorating for the celebration, serving the picnic lunch
and help with serving refreshments during the dance. If you are interested and available, please

Donations are also needed in order to make this event a success. Please consider
donating one or more of the following items for the student celebration:
1. Cash donations: This will help to pay for the decorations, music and refreshments.

2. Refreshments for the Dance Needed: Cookies/bars, chips and fruit to be served during the dance.

INTERNAL TRANSFER INFORMATION FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR
Our internal transfer process provides an opportunity for our families to ask that their child attend an MMSD school that
is outside of their regular MMSD attendance area. Beginning with the 2015-16 school year, the Board of Education
adopted a revised application process for new internal transfer requests. For a copy of the Board policy, please go to:

The revised process is needed because in some cases past internal transfer approvals may have contributed to
crowding in some of our schools. Crowded schools are not an ideal learning environment for our students. The new
internal transfer application process makes better use of information about classroom space and other considerations to
help ensure the best learning environments for all our students. This process also allows for more timely notification for
families and school staff that an internal transfer request has been approved or denied.
For new internal transfer requests beginning with the 2015-16 school year:
Our updated application form for new internal transfer requests will be available on May 4 so it can be used during the
first round of applications, which runs from May 4 through 4pm on May 15. The first round application window opens
on May 4 because capacity calculations conducted at the end of April will determine which schools can accept
applications and which cannot. Families who submit their applications during this time will know if their application has
been approved on or before July 1. Any application that is not approved during the first round will automatically go on a
wait list.
There will be a second application period that runs from 4:00 pm on May 15 through 6:00 pm on August 21. Because
we need to make sure there is room to accommodate internal transfer requests, we need to review and approve second
round applications after enrollments have finished for next year. So, families who submit their applications during this
second period or are on the wait list will know if their application has been approved or denied on or before August 26.

Moving from elementary to middle school and from middle to high school beginning with the 2016-17 school
year:
Like most districts, MMSD’s schools are set up in what are called feeder patterns. These patterns group certain
elementary schools together and students from those schools go to the same middle school. The same is true for
grouping middle schools together for going on to high school.
For internal transfers approved for the 2015-16 and following school years, families will have to reapply if they want their
child to follow along with their school’s feeder pattern from elementary to middle school if they do not already live in that
middle school’s attendance boundary. The same is true for students moving from middle to high school.

Please note: The above processes apply only to new internal transfer applications approved beginning with the 2015-16
school year. If your child has an approved internal transfer for the 2014-15 school year, nothing has changed for your

Transfers.

Nuestro proceso de traslado interno brinda a los hijos de nuestras familias la oportunidad de atender una escuela del
Distrito Metropolitano de Madison fuera del área designada por defecto. Empezando este año 2015-16, el Comité de
Educación adoptará un proceso para traslados internos actualizado. Para ver una copia de esta ley del Comité,

Este proceso actualizado es necesario, ya que admisiones pasadas contribuyeron en algunos casos a problemas de
capacidad en las escuelas. El amontonamiento de estudiantes en las escuelas no proporciona un ambiente ideal de
aprendizaje. El nuevo proceso de solicitud para traslados internos utiliza mejor la información de capacidad en cada
salón y otras consideraciones para procurar un mejor ambiente de aprendizaje para todos nuestros alumnos. Este
proceso facilita también la notificación puntual de aprobación o niegue de traslado interno al personal docente y
familias.
Para nuevos pedido de traslado interno este año escolar 2015-16:
Nuestra solicitud actualizada para pedidos de traslado interno estará disponible este 4 de mayo, para poder ser
utilizada durante la primera ola de solicitudes del 4 de mayo hasta el 15 de mayo a las 4 PM. Esta primera ola
empezará el 4 de mayo porque los cálculos de capacidad de fin de abril determinarán qué escuelas podrán aceptar
solicitudes y cuales no. Se notificará a las familias que entreguen sus solicitudes en este plazo si fueron aceptadas a
más tardar el 1 de julio. Toda solicitud no aceptada durante la primera ola pasará automáticamente a una lista de
espera.
El siguiente período de solicitud va del 15 de mayo a las 4 PM hasta el 21 de agosto a las 6 PM. Ya que

GET INVOLVED AT CHEROKEE!
If you are interested in getting engaged in your child's middle school experience by getting to know staff, learning more
about Cherokee's needs and strengths, and helping to provide support to exciting programs, please consider
participating in the Cherokee PTO in some way. Currently, four parents form a very casual PTO Board. We meet
occasionally as needed and work on projects that we find interesting and beneficial. This year that has included Box
Tops for Education, staff grants, The Cougar Color Run and outreach to the broader MMSD community. Other parents
may want to take things in a different direction, and are free to do so.
In addition to looking for parents to join the Cherokee PTO Board, it would also be great to have someone to manage
the Box Tops program. Since reviving this program this year, Cherokee has already made $772! If you are interested in
coordinating Bucky Book sales or restaurant nights, those have also been past fundraisers for Cherokee.
There is always a need for more hands on deck. If you have any interest in learning more about the Cherokee PTO or

BOX TOPS
The PTO is sponsoring our final Box Tops Collection Contest of the year. The rules are simple – clip Box Tops and send
them to school with your student by June 1. See page 26 for more details.
TAPAS DE CAJA
La Organización de Maestros y Padres de Familia (PTO) de Cherokee Heights está patrocinando el Concurso de Colección de
Tapas de Caja (Box Tops). Las reglas son simples – corte las Tapas de Cajas con este logo y el número de puntos y envíelas
con su estudiante antes del 1 de junio. Vea la página 26 para más detalles.
COUGAR COLOR RUN:
The Cherokee PTO invites your student, your family, friends and neighbors to participate in the first annual Cougar Color
Run. The Cougar Color Run will be a one-mile fun run/walk where participants will be showered in non-toxic cornstarchbased colored powder along the route. Students, staff, families and community members are all welcome to participate
and/or volunteer at the Cougar Color Run. We want this to be an event that encourages engagement at our school.
The Cougar Color Run will be held on Sunday, May 17, at NOON. Registration will be open at 11:00 am on May 17,
and the run begins at 12:00. The first 100 participants to register will receive an event t-shirt and goody bag (includes
sunglasses, bandana, Chocolate Shoppe and Fast Forward coupons and more). T-shirts and goody bags are not
guaranteed after that point, but fun still is! Pre-registration is highly encouraged and the cost is $25. Registration on the day
of the event is $30. Wearing white is best to show off the end result - finishing the run covered in color.
If fun run participation isn’t for you, we would like to encourage all parents and high school students (particularly those
needing volunteer hours!) to volunteer for the event. We are in need of color sprayers, check in assistance and a few other
basic jobs. We are trying to keep the event simple and fun for everyone. Below you will find a link to sign up genius where
you can volunteer to help out if you’d like. Attached is a participation form if you, members of your family, friends or
neighbors would like to participate (forms are also available in the office).

CARRERA COLORIDA COUGAR:
Estimadas Familias de Cherokee:
Este año la PTO (Organización de Maestros y Padres de Familia) invita a participar a Uds., a su estudiante, amigos
y vecinos en la primera Carrera Colorida Cougar. La Carrera Colorida Cougar será un carrera/caminata de 1.6
kilómetros (una milla) donde se rociará a los participantes a lo largo de la ruta con polvo de colores no-tóxico a base
de almidón de maíz. Los alumnos, personal docente, familias y miembros de la comunidad podrán participar o ser
voluntarios en la Carrera Colorida Cougar. Nuestro objetivo es promover un evento donde todos puedan participar.
La Carrera Colorida Cougar se llevará a cabo el domingo 17 de mayo al MEDIO DÍA. Inscripción abierta a las
11 AM el 17 de mayo, la carrera empieza a las 12 PM. Los primeros 100 inscritos recibirán una camiseta del
evento y una bolsa con regalitos (con gafas de sol, un pañuelo, cupones para Chocolate Shoppe y Fast forward, y
más). ¡No garantizamos disponibilidad de camisetas o bolsas con regalitos después de empezar la carrera, pero sí
le garantizamos la diversión! Le recomendamos inscribirse con tiempo ($25). El costo el día del evento es $30. La
ropa blanca mostrará mejor el resultado final -- acabar la carrera cubierto de colores.
Si no le apetece la carrera divertida, animamos a los padres y estudiantes de secundaria (especialmente aquellos
que quieren horas de voluntariado) a ser voluntarios en el evento. Necesitamos rociadores de color, ayuda con

One Mile Run/Walk for students, faculty and community Sunday, May 17, 2015 12:00 pm. Check in begins at 11:00 am
Please join us for the first annual Cougar Color Run! In a color run, participants are sprayed with non-toxic colored
powder at stations along the route. Wearing white at the starting line is best to show off the end result - finish the run
covered in color (so please dress accordingly). Sunglasses are also recommended for participants. This fun run/walk
will benefit Cherokee Heights Middle School through funds for the PTO. The first 100 participants registered and paid
will receive a free t-shirt and race goody bag.

Everyone on the course must be registered. Additional forms will be available on the Cherokee PTO website
(www.cherokeeheightspto.or) and in the Main Office. If you have any questions, email
[email protected] or call Kris at 239-2229. Waiver must be signed and payment included for registration
to be complete.

Acompáñenos en la primera Carrera Colorida annual Cougar! En una Carrera Colorida, se rocía a los
participantes con polvo de colores no tóxico en cada puesto durante la ruta entera. Vestirse de blanco es la
menor manera de lucir el resultado final – acabar completamente cubierto de color (¡Vístase tomando esto en
cuenta!). Recomendamos también usar lentes de sol. La divertida carrera/caminata beneficiará a la Escuela
Intermedia Cherokee con fondos para su PTO (Organización de Maestros y Padres de Familia). Los primeros

Cherokee Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon 2015
During the annual Teacher Appreciation week, we would like to say “Thank You” and show our
appreciation to the Cherokee teachers and staff for their commitment and devotion to our
children! Please join the PTO in honoring them with a luncheon on Thursday, May 7, 2015,
10:45 am – 2:00 pm.
You may participate by donating a food item, making a cash donation and/or volunteering. The
money donated will be used to purchase additional food, paper products, and drinks.
To make a cash donation, please complete the Donation/Volunteer Form, attach cash or check
(payable to the Cherokee PTO), and return to the school office by Wednesday, April 22.
For food donations, please complete the Donation/Volunteer Form and return to school by
Wednesday, April 29. Donated food items may be dropped off at the office by 10:00 am on
Thursday, May 7 (ovens are available for reheating). If possible, send food in a disposable
container; otherwise clearly mark your serving dish and utensils with your name for your
child to pick up in the office at the end of the day. Also, we get many requests from teachers for
recipes of the delicious donated dishes so, if possible, please attach a copy of your recipe to
your dish.

2015 Almuerzo de Reconocimiento a los Maestros y Personal Docente
Quisieramos agradecer y mostrar nuestro aprecio, durante la Semana de Reconocimiento al Maestro, a
los profesores y personal docente de Cherokee este año por su entrega y dedicación a nuestros hijos.
Por favor acompañe al PTO (Organización de Maestros y Padres de Familia) en un almuerzo para
honrarles este jueves 7 de mayo del 2015, de 10:45 AM – 2:00 PM.
Podrá participar donando alimentos, haciendo una donación en efectivo, y/o como voluntario. El dinero
recaudado será utilizado para comprar alimentos, utensilios de papel y bebidas adicionales.
Para hacer una donación en efectivo, llene el Formulario de Donaciones/Voluntariado, añada su cheque
(escrito a Cherokee PTO) o dinero en efectivo, y entréguelo a la oficina de la escuela antes del
miércoles 22 de abril.
Para donar alimentos, llene el Formulario de Donaciones/Voluntariado, y entréguelo a la escuela antes
del miércoles 29 de abril. Podrá dejar sus donaciones de alimentos hasta antes de las 10:00 AM el
jueves 7 de mayo (habrán hornos para poder calentar la comida). Si le es posible, envíe el alimento en
un envase descartable; caso contrario escriba claramente su nombre en su envase y utensilios para
que puedan ser recogidos por su hijo al final del día. A menudo nos piden las recetas de los deliciosos
platos, así que si le es posible, adjunte una copia de la receta de su plato.

INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH KIDS?

Then, we want you!
Are you or someone you know, looking for a part-time 10-15 hour per week job? As a Crossing Guard, you will be
providing a great service to your community as well as earning $15.35 per hour. Limited
benefits may be available. The City of Madison is looking for interested, responsible
individuals who enjoy working outdoors to provide safety for our school children for the
2015-2016 school year.
Most shifts are 1 - 1 ¼ hours and fall between the hours of 7:00-8:45 a.m. and 2:30-4:00
p.m. with an earlier shift Monday afternoons. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday
with no weekend, evening or holiday work. Some flexibility is required due to early
release dates. This is a great job for the retiree, grandparent, or stay-at-home parent reentering the job market.

JOAN HANSON FOUNDATION
Joan taught many Cherokee students when they attended Thoreau. She was universally loved. In her honor, her family
has created the Joan Hanson Foundation and intend to award sports scholarships to low income/at risk youth. Please see
below.

I am writing to share some exciting news! To honor the memory of Joan Hanson, her family has created the Joan
Hanson Foundation. For those of you who knew Joan, you will remember her passion for youth and fitness. In 2012, her
work as an educator was officially honored by NBC 15 when she received the Crystal Apple Award. In her life, Joan gave
much of herself to build a better community for all. Through the Joan Hanson Foundation, we all have an opportunity to
carry on her great work and create opportunities for youth that are in need.
The Joan Hanson Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing funds for economically
disadvantaged children to pursue athletic opportunities in the Madison area. Their mission is to create scholarships that
will be given to at-risk youth which allow them to participate in organized sport programs or camps and provide them with
the necessary athletic equipment.
How can you help the Joan Hanson Foundation meet its goal?
