Colorado Governor takes Corvette for spin
In fact, Gov. John Hickenlooper needed only to nudge his head Tuesday
morning to control a tricked-out 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray around the west
parking lot of the 1st Bank Center. After a short jaunt, Hickenlooper stepped
out of the Corvette and announced that he was suitably impressed. "This is
one of the most amazing things I've ever done," Hickenlooper said.
"It's almost like it was reading my mind." In a way, the car was. The
Corvette is modified for the Arrow Semi-Autonomous Motorcar Project for
former Indy Car driver and current Verizon Indy Car Series Team owner
Sam Schmidt. Schmidt was paralyzed in a racing accident in 2000. But last
May, Schmidt became the first person with quadriplegia to drive at speed at
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, using the modifications Hickenlooper
used Tuesday. Those included a cap loaded with sensors connected to
dashboard-mounted infrared cameras, which detect head tilts and command
steering. Hickenlooper also used his breath to accelerate and brake the
Corvette by sucking or blowing into a tube attached to Freescale pressure
sensor. Hickenlooper admitted driving without using his hands was tough at
first. In the passenger seat next to him was Noel Marshall, mechanical
engineer for the Corvette project. "You have to stay focused on what you are
doing and keep looking straight ahead," Hickenlooper said. CDOT is
expected to announce the launch of Road X, a $20 million venture that seeks
new technology and private partners to "improve safety, mobility and
efficiency of the state's transportation system over the next 10 years.

Lingenfelter Unveils Wide-Body Kit For The C7
It’s been a while since we last heard from Lingenfelter, but the tuning firm, based in Brighton, Michigan,
has been toiling away on some interesting new products. One of these is a new wide-body kit designed
for the seventh-generation Corvette.
The kit widens the all-American sports car by roughly two inches either side. It consists of wider wheel
arches as well as a new front splitter and rocker panels. Lingenfelter also adds a carbon fiber hood
extractor to give an aggressive, tuner look. With the kit installed, you’ll be able to install 20-inch
wheels rocking massive 335/25 size tires.
And to ensure that your C7 Corvette has the go to match its new show, Lingenfelter offers a supercharger package that even with mild boost pressure will see the stock 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 spit out 624
horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Along with the supercharger, in this case an Edelbrock
E-Force TVS2300, there is also a high-flow exhaust system incorporating Kooks headers and cat-back
Corsa pipes.
According to Lingenfelter CEO Ken Lingenfelter, the body kit and engine upgrade remains well under
Corvette Z06 pricing, making it a good option for Corvette Stingray owners seeking a distinct look for
their car plus plenty of performance but without breaking the bank.

“Black Betty” is One Seriously Mean Project Camaro
The fourth-generation Camaro didn’t have the easiest of times. The pony
car launched in 1993, couldn’t match the sales of its Mustang rival, GM
killed it off in 2002, and it wouldn’t return until eight years later. Not the
greatest run, however that’s not to say it wasn’t a star in its own right.
These ponies could move this one in particular. If you were a fan of the
Camaro Performers Magazine, you’ll recognize this immediately as
“Black Betty,” the publication’s fourth-gen Camaro Z28 project car.
The mag’s print edition has unfortunately been phased out, but Black Betty
still lives on and it’s now prowling eBay. And “prowling” is the right
word.
Black Betty looks pretty darn mean. When new, this 2001 Camaro Z28
came from the factory stuffed with an LS1 V8, a gift from the C5 Corvette.
But as they wrote in their multitude of build write-ups, Camaro Performers
didn’t think building up that LS1 was the right way to go.
Instead, the 5.7-liter was yanked in favor of a Gen IV LS3 V8 crate motor
an engine that GM says makes around 430 horsepower and 424 lb.-ft. of
torque, stock.

Black Betty” is One Seriously Mean Project Camaro
Now, the V8 has been stroked and receives Mahle Power Pak pistons, a Lunati crankshaft, valves, high
lift camshaft, forged rods, Doug’s exhaust headers, and a new Holley throttle body. The end result is
said to be 500 horsepower to the wheels, which is not what you’d call a paltry figure.
Thankfully, there’s plenty of stopping power too, provided by Wilwood six-piston brakes in the front,
four-piston in the back, and five-spoke Weld Racing alloys.
Under the body, a Global West suspension kit and Viking Performance coil-over shocks have been
employed to transmit the Camaro’s grunt to the ground. Power now flows through a Moser 12-bolt rear
end with 3.73 gears, which mates to T56 manual.
Inside the cabin, a pearl white cue ball shifter guides that six-speed gearbox, and complements a
tastefully unmodified interior, apart from an A-pillar gauge cluster and Corbeau CR1 racing seats.
All told, it’s a very clean build, and befitting its magazine origins, a popular one too. The market for
fourth-gens might not be anywhere near that of the first, but if they all looked like Black Betty…well,
that might be a different story.

Hackers use insurance gadget to remotely control Corvette
Car hackers have struck again, this time stopping a Chevrolet Corvette in its
tracks, then not letting it stop at all.
The vehicle was fitted with a dongle from Metromile that plugs into a car’s
OBD2 port to provide a stream of data that the company uses to charge
insurance rates based on how a person drives. Such "by-the-mile" and "safe
driver" plans are becoming increasingly popular across the United States,
and this particular company provides the service to some Uber drivers.
Wired reports that researchers at the University of California at San Diego
(UCSD) reverse engineered the cellular-connected device, discovered
several security flaws, and developed a way to use it to control several of the
2013 Corvette’s systems by simply sending it text messages.
In a video demonstrating the exploit, they operated the windshield wipers
and both applied and deactivated the brakes at low speeds. Although they
only attacked the one car under controlled circumstances, they claim they
would’ve been able to do similar things to just about any vehicle using one
of the dongles, including taking control of the steering or transmission.
The researchers notified Metromile about the flaw in June before they
publicized it, and the company says that it’s sent out a patch to fix it.
However, the dongles, which were made by Mobile Devices of France, are
used by other insurance providers and fleet management firms around the
world, and the UCSD team says it has spotted thousands of still-vulnerable
vehicles via the Internet.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro: First Drive
The sixth generation of Chevy’s iconic muscle car takes everything you love or hate about the Camaro
and turns it up a notch.
There’s a good reason The Dead Milkmen’s about a “bitchin’ Camaro” is one of the punk standards our
time. Like punks themselves, the Camaro has long stood out for its brazen commitment to individuality.
It has always been about kicking ass and taking names.
The new 2016 Chevy Camaro is no different. It’s not nice. It’s not polite. And it definitely likes to
growl, as we discovered in our first drive last month around scenic Hell, Mich.
While the changes may look small from the outside, the Camaro has an all-new chassis. Visually, the
designers over at Chevrolet decided not to mess too much with a winning formula. The 2016 model
retains that muscular, hunched over look from previous generations. The greenhouse is still achingly
small; in fact the whole car is a bit tighter, shaving a few inches in every dimension.
Not to be outdone by the Eco Boost option in the Ford Mustang, the first factory turbocharged Camaro
arrives with a 2-liter 4-cylinder base model, good for 275 h.p and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The 6-speed manual transmission version will get to 60 mph is 5.4 seconds, while the 8-speed
automatic adds a tenth of a second.
The 3.6L V-6 engine now knocks out 335 h.p and 284 lb-ft of torque, with only a slight speed bump
over the turbo’s run to 60 mph, at 5.2 seconds in the manual, and 5.1 seconds with the automatic. But
those are the supporting players to the real star, the 6.2-liter V-8 in the SS, now churning out 455 h.p
and an equal amount of torque. Sprint times are much faster with this bad boy: 4.3 seconds while
rowing your own, and 4.0 seconds in the automatic.
Of course, straight-line fun isn’t everything. In order to get the Camaro around the turns quickly,
Chevrolet went on a mission to shed some 200 lbs. with the new frame. The 2-liter turbo is lighter than
the Eco Boost Mustang by 185 pounds, while the V-6 is lighter than the Mustang V-6 by 95 pounds.
Bring in another American muscle car and the numbers get even more impressive. The Camaro V-6 and
V-8 both come in at nearly 400 pounds lighter than the corresponding Dodge Challenger.
Chevrolet offered us limited time in the V-6 and V-8 Camaros, and on residential country roads to boot,
so it’s difficult to say how the car handles when pushed to the limit.
Having said that, the weight reduction is noticeable from the first stab on the throttle and the first turn
into the twisters. The 6-speed manual transmission offers clean and crisp shifts, while the 8-speed auto,
when using the paddle shifters, will let you bring it to the red line and eke out as much power as
possible.
If you’re not ready to become a heel-toe hero, the manual can come equipped with a rev-matching
feature. It may be a little confusing at first as the function is turned on and off by what looks like
paddle shifters, but once activated the computer blips the throttle upon downshifting, making you a
better driver than you probably deserve to be. Steering feel is right on the money, although I am always
longing for a hydraulic setup.

The 6th generation Camaro also comes with different drive modes: Snow/
Ice, Tour, Sport, and for the SS only, Track.
These modes adjust the throttle tip in, auto shift map, and steering feel.
You can even adjust the interior ambient lighting to one of 24 different
colors. You know, if that’s your jam.
There are two reasons for throwing down the cash for the SS model.
The first: 455 hp. The second helps get those horses around the track:
Magnetic Ride Control. Previously only found in the track-ready Camaro
ZL1, the technology is now being offered on the SS. This system is able to
read the road and driving conditions up to 1,000 times a second, and can
adjust the dampers settings accordingly. The result is a smoother ride over
broken pavement and more confidence in the turns. Take a crest at speed
and the system adjusts to keep you snugged down tightly to the road. Fly
over rough pavement and nary a rumble shall disturb your behind.
Still, I wouldn’t call the Camaro a corner carver. While markedly improved from the fifth-generation’s dynamics, it’s still a 3,700-lb. machine;
you’d need anti-gravity to make it as nimble as a roadster.
Sightlines inside have improved a bit from last year, but a driver
unfamiliar with modern Camaros will still feel like they’re taking a bath in
a basement with the lights off. The high shoulder line looks great from the
outside, but hinders visibility from the inside. When in reverse, the
requisite backup camera mitigates some stress; otherwise, the rear window
is just a sliver of daylight.
The redesigned dash moves up a notch in quality, dominated by an 8-inch
touchscreen with the Chevy MyLink infotainment system and Apple Car
Play or Android Auto. It’s fairly intuitive and easy to use with sharp
graphics. An electronic parking brake is new this year, (forget any parking
lot E-brake burn outs you may want to do) but the payoff is re-positioned
cup holders that allow for easier access to the stick shift. We’ll take that
trade off.
And while there is plenty of high tech happening in the cabin, drivers still
get an analog speedometer and tachometer. One nifty design trick is the
integration of the heating and cooling controls on the rings surrounding the
air vents themselves. By cutting out the buttons, designers were able to
lower the dash, letting a little more space into the cabin.
The front seats are comfortable and there is plenty of headroom for anyone
at six feet tall and under. The backseat?

That’s another story. With the driver’s seat adjusted to my seating position, at five-foot-nine, I barely
had any room for my feet, let alone my knees. It’s so bad the press kit doesn’t even give the head and
leg room numbers for the rear seat. Expect to carry only your enemies in the back.
EPA fuel ratings have not been released, but we do know the 2-liter turbo to return 30 mpg on the
highway. The V-6 and V-8 both have Active Fuel Management system, which will disengage two
cylinders under light throttle applications, so we expect the larger engines to return somewhere in the
low 20’s combined.
Full pricing has not been announced, but we do know the 1LT will start at $26,695 while the 1SS will
set you back $37,295. That’s a bit more than the comparable 2015 Mustang, but a bit less than the 2015
Challenger R/T Plus Shaker with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or Scat Pack with the 6.4-liter V-8.
All three now rank among the best pony cars ever turned out by Detroit. The Challenger hews to its
classic design with the monster 707-hp Hellcat as an option, while the Mustang has finally embraced a
modern suspension and even a fairly avant-garde flat-plane crank V-8 in the Shelby edition.
The new Camaro balances that fine line of tradition and technology in truly bitchin’ fashion.

New Callaway Corvette GT3-R gaining momentum with addition of
Curran and Said
Momentum continues to build toward an a new Callaway Competition
Corvette C7 GT3-R program next year with the support of Whelen
Engineering and drivers Boris Said and Eric Curran.
Reeves Callaway's independently built GT3-spec Corvette C7 will race in
unspecified European
championships in partnership with Sonny Whelen
and utilize two of his most tenured pilots.
"It's really exciting to be entering into yet another program with Whelen
Engineering," said Curran, who has been with Whelen since they joined
forces in SCCA Pro Racing's World Challenge series.
"Sonny Whelen has been a close friend, sponsor, and teammate of mine for
nine years, so to be venturing into a new program combined with Callaway
Cars is a really big deal.
"All the guys at Callaway have been good friends for over 15 years and I've
done a lot of work with the Callaway Car Company. Boris and I have been
teammates for many years in the Whelen Engineering GT Corvette.
It's exciting to be teammates with Boris again and to combine all these
things made in America."
Separate from the factory Corvette Racing C7.R program that competes in
IMSA and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Callaway C7 GT3-R marks the
Connecticut-based high performance tuner's latest offering on the Corvette
platform.
The C7 GT3-R follows the Z06.R and a series of other Corvette models
dating back to 1994 and, like most of Callaway's recent racecars, the new
6.2-liter V8-powered GT3-R will be constructed at Callaway Competition's
base in Leingarten, Germany.
Recently unveiled in nearby Hockenheim, the car's namesake professed his
enthusiasm for the project. "We look forward to fielding this worthy effort,"
Callaway said.
"A quintessential American brand, with American drivers, fueled by an
American company's sponsorship in a premier European series and
settings we could not be more proud."

Tampa Bay Grand Prix is an indoor go kart racing facility with two locations
in the Tampa Bay area.
Our company works very closely with car clubs all over Florida. We host
Cars and Karts meets on Mondays at our Clearwater facility, Fast Life meets
on Wednesdays at our Tampa facility, and Cars Coffee and Karting events
every second Saturday of the month at our Tampa facility.
With all of these successful relationships in the car community, and plenty of
parking lot space; Tampa Bay Grand Prix would like to offer car clubs a
