welcome to this Cup
Final Edition
Newsletter.
of
our
Hibernian and Hearts
will play each other in
the Scottish Cup Final
for the first time in more
than a Century on May
19.
All roads from Edinburgh
(and beyond) will lead
back to the National
Stadium in just four
weeks time, sparking
what has already become
one of the biggest
scramble for tickets
the City has ever
seen. As everyone
says, "It's fantastic, a
great moment. This
place will be rocking.
The place will be sold
out. It's going to be a
fantastic day." The
last
time
both
Edinburgh sides met
in the Scottish Cup
Final was in 1896
when Hearts beat
Hibs 3-1 on March 14
at Logie Green Park,
April 2012
the only Final ever to
be played outwith
Glasgow. The last
time Hibs won the
tournament (as we all
know only too well)
was six years later in
1902.
Let’s make history
and
have
the
bragging rights over
our Rivals for years
to come.

I Remember When: Hibernian in 1902
(jonnyboy @ hibs.net)
It is a well known and quite painful fact, that Hibernian have not won the Scottish Cup since 1902,
but whilst that win is obviously one to celebrate, the calendar year of 1902 held a few more goodies
too!
11 January brought a 1st round Scottish Cup win over Clyde at Easter Road with the goals in a 2-0
win coming from Billy McCartney and Johnny Divers
25 January brought a 2nd round Scottish Cup win away to Port Glasgow Athletic. Goals from Andy
McGeachan (2), Bobby Atherton, Paddy Callaghan and Johnny Divers took us through in a 5-1 win.
22 February saw Hibs at Hampden facing Queens Park in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup and
marching on after a 7-1 win with goals from Andy McGeachan (3), Johnny Divers getting (3) and
Paddy Callaghan.
22 March was semi final day of the Scottish Cup and Hibs beat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox with goals by
Johnny Divers and Billy McCartney
26 April was the day of the Scottish Cup Final with Hibs beating Celtic 1-0 at Parkhead thanks to
Andy McGeachan immortalising himself in Hibernian folklore
17 May witnessed Hibs beating Rangers 1-0 away in the 1st round of the Glasgow Charity Cup with
Bobby Atherton the scorer
19 May in the semi final of the Rosebery Cup, Hibs beat St Bernards 4-2
24 May in the Final of the Rosebery Cup, Hibs beat Hearts 1-0 and it’s that man McGeachen again
27 May Hibs beat Morton 3-0 in the semi final of the Glasgow Charity Cup
31 May Hibs beat Celtic 6-2 in the Final of the Glasgow Charity Cup (that’s three trophies so far)
29 September Hibs go to Ibrox and thrash Rangers 5-2 in the League. Bobby Atherton (2), Davy
Reid (2) and Billy McCartney inflicting the damage
20 December Hibs win 2-0 away at Partick Thistle and thereby lift the League title with goals from
Paddy Callaghan and Billy McCartney
PS: In January 1903 Hibs went to Parkhead and won 4-0 with goals by Paddy Callaghan, Billy
McCartney, Davy Reid and Jimmy Buchan. We didn't need the points but took them anyway.

1896 Scottish Cup Final v Hearts (Logie Green Park)
Extract from the
Evening News:
The match itself has
gone down in Scottish
football folklore, as it
remains one of the few
times the fixture has
been staged away from
Hampden. Logie Green
Park was then home to
St Bernard’s, a major
third force in Edinburgh
football who had won the
Scottish
Cup
the
previous year.
Hibs
centre-forward
‘Darlin’ Willie Groves was
viewed as a talisman by
the fans but on a dull but
dry afternoon at Logie
Green, he was forced to
concede second best to
a Hearts forward line who
dominated the final from the
start.The Gorgie men opened
the scoring after just three
minutes and never looked
back. The goal came from the
penalty
spot,
after
the
controversial
figure
of
Robertson had handled, with
Davie Baird finding the net.
Despite the best efforts of
Groves, Hibs were unable to
break down a Hearts defence
in which, according to The
Scotsman’s correspondent, fullback Bob McCartney was “in
great form” while goalkeeper
Jock Fairbairn defied the
Easter Road forwards “in his
usual masterly fashion”. The
game was effectively put
beyond Hibs midway through
the second half when Alex King
made it 2-0 from a tight angle.
When Willie Michael headed
home Hearts’ third, the trophy
was heading for Tynecastle and
a late goal from James O’Neill
was mere consolation for a well
beaten and dispirited Hibs.
As for Logie Green, the street
names remain but the football
ground’s place in Scottish
football history remains a one-off
curiosity. It continued as a
football ground, for St Bernard’s
and Leith Athletic, until being
paved over to create a car park
for the Powderhall athletics and
greyhound stadium that has now
also disappeared from the
Edinburgh map, consumed by
the
insatiable
appetite
of
property developers.
