Around the Bay In LPA official newsletter of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Little People of America Vol. 4, No. 3 Chapter founded in 1962 JACKIE EAST IN MEMORIAM MARY JANE CARLINO OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES BY ROB HAINES This year the SFBAC has lost three lifelong members. Anthony Carolino, Mary Jane Carlino, and Jackie East have been members of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter since the mid 1960’s, and they were all instrumental in building the strong foundation that exists within our chapter today. Anthony Carlino passed way in March, 2001. Anthony was an avid fisherman, and loved to go camping. Anthony attended numerous national conventions in the 1970’s and 1980’s, and he was an original member of the Stumps baseball team. Anthony is survived by his son, Joey Hackl, 14, of San Lorenzo. Mary Jane Carolino passed away at her home in Anderson, CA on February 13. Mary Jane and her late husband Neno were among the original founders of the SFBAC. Mary Jane attended numerous national conventions and was instrumental in the production of numerous district conventions. Mary Jane also served as an officer within our chapter throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. Mary Jane is survived by her two daughters Peggy July - September, 2001 ANTHONY CARLINO UP COMING LPA EVENTS Saturday, July 28 2-5 p.m. Scandia Fun Center • Fairfield/Suisin August 18 Over 21 Polyesters Nightclub San Francisco August 24 & 25 Chapter Camp Out And Picnic Social Marin County September 9 Swim Party • San Jose September 22 Mom’s Retreat • West Petaluma November 10 Over 21 Bocce Ball • Los Gatos (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 ) Around the Bay In LPA / July - September, 2001 1 AROUND THE BAY IN LPA OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA CHAPTER OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE OF AMERICA PUBLISHED QUARTERLY AND AVAILABLE ON-LINE website: www.lpbayarea.org CHAPTER OFFICERS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY ROB HAINES To All The Members and Friends of the San Francisco Bay Area: Summer is here, and our chapter is active as ever. We had a wonderful attendance at Tilden Park, the Kids Athletic Event at the Foos’ was once again a success, and everyone enjoyed watching Jon Morato ride the mechanical bull at the Saddlerack. The Chapter sends its best wishes for healthy recoveries to two of our members that have had back surgery recently. John Long of Napa and Denis Calonico of San Mateo will each be spending their summer doing rehab, and chapter members are urged to serve as a support system for our recovering members. As we move into the summer season, we will be taking most of our activities outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and the warm evening air. Coming up in late July the chapter will be hosting an event at Scandia Fun Center in Fairfield, and for the second year in a row we will have a swim party at the Throckmorton’s in Santa Clara. Everyone had a wonderful time at last year’s party, and I’m sure this year will be the same. Rob Haines - President [email protected] Robin Cox - Vice President [email protected] Sonia Welch - Treasurer [email protected] Carol Skladany - Secretary [email protected] Karyn Noel - Newsletter Editor [email protected] Linda Peterson - Parents Committee [email protected] Jon Morato - Webmaster [email protected] Coming up in October, our chapter is honored to have Dr. Pauli, Chairperson of the LPA Medical Advisory, join us. Dr. Pauli will be giving a presentation and I encourage as many attendees as possible. For more information on this event, please contact Ginny Foos at [email protected]. The District 12 Fall regional will also be in October, however the exact dates and location are still TBD. I will keep you all posted as soon as I hear. Chapter elections will be held at our annual Bring In the Holiday’s Event at the Figone’s. Ever year this event is our most popular, and if the weather is good to us, we will more than likely have up to 90 to 100 attendees. If you are interested in becoming a chapter officer, please contact me either by phone or by email. I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and thank you all for supporting our chapter. Around the Bay In LPA / July - September, 2001 2 SCANDIA FUN CENTER JULY 28, 2001 CORDELIA JUNCTION/SUISUN CITY 2:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. Scandia Fun Center at the Cordelia Junction near Suisun City has a little something for everyone! You expert golfers can master the two challenging 18 hole golf courses. Baseball fanatics can enjoy the batting cages (both slow pitch and fast pitch), and those who enjoy water sports can jump into the bumper boats and try to get your friends wet !! The center also has enough arcade games to keep everyone busy for countless hours. Directions: Scandia Fun Center is located on I-80 at the junction of 680 just South of Fairfield on I-80. Heading north on I-80 or 680, take the Suisun Valley Road Exit, and you will see the center on the right side. Disabled parking is located on the left side of the parking lot near the main entrance. HIGH TIME FOR TEA GOOD LUCK TO THE DAGIT FAMILY Chapter Vice President Robin Cox decided it was “high time” the ladies got together to be splurged and pampered upon. She planned the event at “Lisa’s Tea Treasures” in Los Gatos back on May 5th. Lisa’s Tea Treasures is a very lovely and quaint kind of place. On behalf of the SFBAC I would like to wish Dan & Deb Dagit the best of luck as they move to New Jersey. Deb has accepted new employment in New Jersey and this will allow their family be closer to Dan’s family in New Jersey. I am sure District 2 will welcome them with open arms and we will all miss them greatly. Carol Skladany, Robin and I were served some fancy cream puffs, light and airy cookies, and delicate finger food along with various flavored teas. The tea was poured for us and we enjoyed being catered to!! Good luck to you, and please remember that you will always be a part of our Bay Area Chapter Family. We had the ultimate service in which to sit back and savor. The place was decorated with flowered wallpaper, white wicker furniture, white linen table cloth/napkins and beautiful patterned china. WELCOME EMMALIA! BY DONNA HUGHES This was my first time to experience a “fancy” tea party and I thoroughly enjoyed my time chatting with the girls. Thank you Robin for planning this delightful event! BY ROB HAINES Patty Alsouqi and Matt Razis are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Emmalia Andrea Razis, who made her entry into this world on May 7th at 8:50 a.m. Weighing in at six pounds and four ounces, Emmalia measured 17 inches long at birth. Her big brother, Basil, is very happy to have a baby sister, and is only a little jealous sometimes. Patty says she is a bit tired, naturally, and Daddy is “gaga-googoo” for her. When Emmalia hears daddy’s voice she already tries to turn around! We welcome Emmalia to our Chapter and hope to see her at a gathering soon. Congratulations to her family! Around the Bay In LPA / July - September, 2001 3 (OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Billree, Judy Stirrken, son Jack Carolino, two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. RIC GIL Just last month, our chapter lost Jackie East. Jackie and her late husband Bob were also founding members of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. After marrying in 1966, Jackie and Bob said good-bye to her home state of Texas and moved to Northern California. Jackie was a strong supporter of LPA in every way. She served as an officer within our chapter in the 1970’s, 80’s, and into the early 1990’s. She was instrumental in the production of many national and district conventions. Jackie’s family is also dedicated to LPA and we look forward to seeing them at future LPA events. In Lieu of flowers, the East Family requests that donations be made to the LPA Billy Barty Adoption Fund. PHOTO BY On behalf of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, I would like to send the East and Carlino Families our deepest condolence’s on their loss. Although Anthony, Mary Jane, and Jackie are no longer with us, their spirits will live forever. I think this is the fourth or fifth year that my family has co-hosted this gathering with the Weber-Gil family. I always look forward to it because Tilden is such a sweet spot and because Ric Gil gets up before the birds to go save the spot. Then I try to get there early, after the birds, and have coffee and visiting time with Ric before the day sets in. We had the traditional pilgrimage to the Little Farm to feed the animals. There are now a handful of kids too old to be interested in farm animals, but there is a fresh young crop of chapter kids who were extremely interested. I think Melissa Snyder visited the goats a hundred times. Or at least that’s what her mom felt like. The park was absolutely packed but our group is one that always seems to outlast the others. Softballs were pitched, Frisbees were thrown and young adult Rachel Keller kicked a mean soccer ball. Meg Weber and I Spencer Uniacke traditionally drive around the park tacking up signs to help our group find us. This time is so special to me because it is the one time per year that we actually have time to visit--during the sign posting. We always plan to get together at another time, but as busy moms, we find another year has gone by without us getting together. Sound familiar? And we don’t even live 5 miles apart! It was great to see early arrivals, three year old Melissa Snyder and her family, as Melissa is now a “grown up” kid—not a toddler, not sleeping on mom’s lap the whole time. She had a blast with four or more other girls age six and under. Ric and I we very interested in learning about the artwork of Melissa’s grandfather Leondard, a retired professional illustrator who is now in his early eighties and making sketches of his remaining World War II buddies. There was plenty of potluck picnic style food to share, and the WeberGil’s cupcakes are always a big hit with the kids. I can’t tell you how many times I said “no more Rachel Diamant, Art Jara and Rachel Keller cupcakes, Isabella!” Also joining us for the feast was a park raccoon who seemed to prefer the fried chicken. Young boys Finn MartinezOwen from Fort Bragg and Spencer Uniake from San Francisco were quite taken with Willem Winkleman and it didn’t take long for the water play shootouts to begin. Robin Cox, Ericka Peasley and John Long During the quiet visiting taking place among the last to leave, Tara Mills learned that she lives just blocks from Julia Jara in San Francisco. Newcomers the Yantis family met my daughter Isabella who has the same type of dwarfism (hypochondroplasia) as their toddler son, Chase. At the end of the day, we were filled with food and soda pop, toasted by the sun, warmed by the friendship, and soaked from the water play. Just my kind of day! TAYLOR REDWOOD PARK MARIN COUNTY SATURDAY, AUGUST 25TH • LUNCH AT NOON The annual Samuel P.Taylor camping trip and picnic is fast approaching. Mark your calendars for this get-back-in-touch-with-nature event. We would love to have you join us this year! Every year we continue to have a great time at this wonderful spot in the Marin County Redwoods. There is a creek to play in and lots of hiking around the area. Bike trails are great there too. There is plenty of space for roller skates as well as scooters. Many chapter members have also been known to bring their water “weapons” (toys). Camping space already overbooked so we are left with plenty of room for day-only visitors for the Picnic Social. Picnickers, the day to be there is Saturday, August 25th. Be sure to bring your own picnic lunch and drinks for yourself and your family for the day. Barbecues are available in the park, so be sure to bring coals and starter if you feel ambitious. Arrive early to enjoy the area. Swimsuits and a change of clothes for the kids is a great idea. Also, don’t forget chairs, towels, sunscreen, kid’s bikes, skates, water shoes (great for the creek if you have them), comfortable shoes and a sweater just in case. Picnickers please plan on dropping off everything at the camping site and moving the car to the day use area as parking is limited at the group site. There is a $5.00 day use fee for Samuel P. Taylor. Contact Linda Peterson at for more information. Directions: From Hwy 101 in San Rafael, exit Central San Rafael and go west on 3rd street. Follow 3rd Street west for about two miles until it runs into Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Bear right onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and drive about 13 miles to the park entrance. This will be a potluck event, so everyone is encouraged to bring a salad or dessert and the Throckmorton’s will provide a BBQ entrée and beverages. Everyone is also required to bring their own towels, and don’t forget to bring any water games or toys. Please RSVP by September 5th to help the Throckmorton’s prepare for our group. Here it is time to produce a newsletter just as we are finishing the school year and packing for our summer adventures. We have migrated from Mac to PC. Sad to loose the Mac and all its ideology but it’s fantastic to have the speed and power of a new PC. Now my husband Tom can do the desktop publishing for this document at home at midnight instead of at work at midnight! It’s Graduation time and we are blessed to have three of our members put on the cap and gowns as they accept their diplomas BY ROB HAINES BY KARYN NOEL The last newsletter was produced in the middle of a fiasco. First, I inadvertently disappeared a bunch of email files containing incoming newsletter articles. I had to ask people to resend their documents to me, only I had no way of knowing what I’d lost. I was banging on the keys and they all disappeared! Went to digital heaven! Then we migrated platforms and I had to learn new software and was already behind on our publishing schedule. One week into it, with the newsletter just about finalized, the brand-spanking-new hard drive crashed, taking the newsletter with it. I gotta say, my husband is a real trooper. He slaved away retrieving files from the old Mac. The same Mac he wanted to get rid of and had relegated to the basement floor. But, alas, he performed his wizardry and recovered what we thought was all of the newsletter. It wasn’t until well after the April newsletter was in the mail that I learned what we had inadvertently omitted: the sad news of Mary Jane Carlino’s passing, and information on a planned Over 21 outing to an A’s game. Agh! After all the software surgery was over, we still had missing parts. I want to extend my most sincere apologies to the Carlino family for our delay in honoring Mary Jane in this newsletter. Donna Hughes has already forgiven me for the slip up with the A’s game info. During the last few weeks I’ve been working with the staff and district personnel at Castro Elementary School on specifying alterations and adaptations to be implemented for Isabella’s benefit as she enters the first grade. It has been a great learning opportunity for me, and I plan to write this up in our next newsletter. We’re looking forward to next year as the school secretary has told me that there will be two more “little people” attending Castro next year! Sunday, June 10th, I attended the 2004 Convention Planning meeting and came away excited and anxious. It will be so much fun to have the convention here in the Bay Area! Oh, no! There is soooo much work to be done! And we need your help! Our chapter has a wonderful opportunity here to give back to our national organization. There were a lot of very creative ideas forthcoming and I am most proud and enthralled to be involved in this endeavor. Can’t wait to get this baby off the ground! Do try to stay out of trouble this summer! R ebecca Hare recently graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics. Rebecca has also spent many years as The National Youth Task Coordinator, and I’m sure we will see her as a leader within LPA very soon. J onathon Morato recently graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Computer Graphics. Jon is also the webmaster of our chapter website and he recently created the logo for the national convention in Toronto. J ennifer Poret recently graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor degree in Theatre and Art. Jennifer is currently involved in the production of “An Ideal Husband”. On behalf of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, I would like to congratulate you all. You all have worked very hard, and everyone is proud of you. FUN IN THE SUN IN PLEASANTON BY JON WELCH A good turnout of about 30 to 40 people thoroughly enjoyed a day filled with warm weather and athletic activities in Pleasanton. In what has become a tradition, The Foos Family (Joe, Ginny, Alex, Dasha, and Ben) graciously hosted the group at the Pleasanton Swim and Recreation Center. The warm weather enticed the children (and some adults) to arm themselves with water cannons and water balloons, while others grabbed shade without complaining too loudly if they were doused. Other physical activity included an organized soccer game, which was led by Joe. The kids demonstrated their soccer skills by aggressively eluding the capture of attempted shots on goal. After spending time in the park area, a number of us headed over to the popular swimming pool area, where we all enjoyed swimming, diving, and playing. The chapter hosted the small entry fee for those who went swimming. A great time was had by all of those in attendance. Thanks to the Foos family for hosting this wonderful event. Plan on meeting with other Moms in the chapter and be able to compare notes and gather information or just catch up on the latest news. Sleeping arrangements are very casual so bring a sleeping bag (and sleeping pad if you like) and plan on camping on the floor. Meal preparation will be shared and we all know we will enjoy something “adult-like” to eat. Everyone should choose a meal to help with. Food required will be snacks on Saturday afternoon, dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. We will pair up moms for each meal and they can plan, provide and clean up as necessary. Even if you cannot plan on spending the night, please come for the afternoon and evening. It is always good for moms to get away for awhile and be themselves…it makes us better moms! Don’t forget to leave the kids at home and plan some time for you. Hope to see you there! Please RSVP to Linda at [email protected]. Willem Winkelman and Jessica Flannery Around the Bay In LPA / July - September, 2001 11 SFBAC GOES COUNTRY/WESTERN BY HAROLD WEAVER The Over 21 Group turned out in good numbers for an evening of fun on Saturday, April 28th in San Jose. The early gatherers were able to feast on some great pizza and suds at a local pizzeria, and catch up on all the latest juicy tidbits of gossip and news with friends and chapter members. A couple of hours later, an even larger group gathered at the Saddle Rack Country & Western nightclub for some “two-steppin” as well as the opportunity to ride the mechanical bull. The Over 21 Group displayed some pretty fancy footwork out on the dance floor with the variety of music that was played. Some jumped at the chance to join in some line dancing, others took advantage of the opportunity to shake their booty to some good old rock and roll. For those more adventuresome folks, the Saddle Rack had a mechanical bull, which did manage to catch the interest of a few LPs. Jon Morato and Michele Figone climbed aboard and both were smiling in the end. Jack Carlino and Becca Hare We’d like to extend a special thank you to those out-of-town guests who joined the group, and also to Stan, who worked with the Saddle Rack management to get the group terrific tables right next to the dance floor.
