VOLUME 14, ISSUE 7 • JULY 2012 THE CORSAIR IPMS Phoenix / Craig Hewitt Chapter President’s Message Greetings fellow Modelers, Well our Scale Modeling Clinic was a success! The Demo tables were filled nonstop, the Display table was brimming with all kinds of cool models and the Build tables were busily hard at work on the next creation. Make and Take rarely had an empty chair. There were 35 adult non-club members along with 10 children who went home hopefully inspired to build more and handfuls of flyer info for IPMS, our Chapter and Modelzona. So look for some new faces at upcoming meetings. Many thanks to Chief Wrangler, Bill Dunkle, Moonlight Modelers, Cactus Car Modelers, all our Demo Volunteers, Make & Take Volunteers, our Photogs, USAF Explorers with Parking lot duty and to Hobby Depot for the donated Door Prizes. We’re off to a good start and hopefully this will become a more frequent event. The winners of the June “This Day In History” contest were Gary Thomas’ 1/72 scale Matchbox F-86A in Arizona Air National Guard markings, and Craig Pierce’s 1/48 scale Tamiya F4F Wildcat diorama. This month’s club contest is appropriately: Red, White and Blue –The kit has to have all three colors on it. And July is Club Build Night so bring something to work on and share with the class! August is Club Swap night with no contest, raffle or program………so start saving those pennies now. This is an interesting and important project that involves interviewing American war veterans and preserving the information for future generations. Jack volunteers at the Tempe Public Library branch, but there are many other locations around Arizona and the U.S. that are participating in this project. If you know of somebody who would be a good candidate to interview, please visit www.tempeconnections.org/vhp to learn more. The June contest was “This Day In History.” The winner in the Advanced Class was Craig Pierce with his 1/48 F4F Wildcat diorama, and the Novice Class winner was Gary Thomas with a 1/72 F-86A in Arizona Air National Guard markings. Great work, gentlemen! To see more of the pictures Jim Hough took at the meeting, visit the Gallery on our website at www.ipms-phoenix.org. Ctr. (BAMC). BAMC is the hospital to which a large number of our Wounded Warriors are sent for treatment and rehabilitation. IPMS members and chapter across Region 6, as well as individuals and clubs from across the U.S., have been supporting the Warriors through donations of hobby supplies for a number of years. Recently, and in a large part due to small “article” that appears in Fine Scale Modeler, several other individuals have launched SST programs in their communities or at their active duty stations. You can visit the IPMS Gallery and view images highlighting these various programs, and also read descriptions of each program, which includes the very important contact information for each program. That web page can be viewed at http://www.ipmsusa3.org/gallery/v/stt/ You and your Chapter are encouraged to make contact with the persons who serve as the Point of Contact for each individual program, and to work with them to supply models, tools, and other necessary items. There is a list of those who have provided donations on that same url. Among those listed are several chapters in Region 6 that have donated table space during their annual events so that IPMS/USA can set up a Donation Station to collect hobby items. IPMS El Paso has graciously provided funding to cover shipping costs to our international programs. Please consider becoming active in the STT program and by provided hobby items to our troops and Wounded Warriors. If you have questions about how to launch such a program in your community, or have questions about how to organize your effort, please feel free to contact the IPMS Secretary at [email protected]. Thanks! Dick Montgomery IPMS Secretary SURFING THE WEB A very interesting video about two World War II aviators whose paths crossed more than once. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agwnwqCdwl8&feature=player_embedded#! Steve Keck sent over this cool interactive website of the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. http://www.nmusafvirtualtour.com/full/tour-pkg.html Ed Kucharski sent this link to the Wings Over New Zealand Aviation Forum that features a mass of pictures of a P-40C in flying condition. Not sure if this is a restoration or a reproduction, but the pictures are cool. http://rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Airshows&action=display&thread=16529 Another link from Ed Kucharski. This one is several pages of information on American Aircraft bombs from 1917 - 1974. http://felixdk.websitetoolbox.com/file?id=600180 Part 1 of a training film on flying the F4U Corsair sent in by Mike Ronnau. After watching this you should have no problem flying your next Hose-nose model around the hobby room. http://youtu.be/5J0BYq3yevs Lastly, here is a link to a nice video of the B-17 and B-25 belonging to the Arizona Wing of the CAF flying over the Arizona countryside. www.vimeo.com/18135369 THE CORSAIR PAGE 6 JULY 2012 Pictures from the Best Of The West model contest in Henderson, Nevada More pictures on next page THE CORSAIR PAGE 7 JULY 2012 THE CORSAIR PAGE 8 Pictures from the Make & Take for the Mesa Public Schools Aviation Camp at the CAF on June 14, 2012 Photos by Jim Hough Once again this year club member Bill Sanborn spearheaded a team of volunteers from IPMS Phoenix to assist kids from the Mesa Public Schools Aviation Camp in building models.
