MANY THANKS I extend sincere thanks to all those who contributed to our parish recognition of the World Meeting of Families and the Papal Visit to Philadelphia. Cathy Kelly was our parish coordinator. She and her husband Tim worked tirelessly behind the scenes putting notices and articles in the bulletin, receiving many communications from the Archdiocese for months, picking up tickets, and working hard in many other ways. Our OLGC Council of the Knights of Columbus, who are always true to their mission of service, generously funded our parish large-screen broadcast of the Papal Mass on the Parkway in our Cultural Center. That event enabled those who were not able to go to Philadelphia to experience the Mass with their fellow parishioners in a special way. Such generosity and dedication always makes me proud and grateful to be your pastor. May God bless you all. Fr. Suskey Our Friends of OLGC Parish We would like to invite you back to our Coffee and Cake Socials starting in October. I recently began doing the Liturgy of the Hours, but to be honest, some of the psalms don’t seem at all relevant to my life. How are Christians supposed to pray the psalms? The Liturgy of the Hours is essentially as ancient as the Church, for in the Acts of the Apostles, it is evident the early disciples followed Jewish tradition and gathered regularly at appointed times of the day to pray. All religious and ordained ministers of the Church are obliged to stop and pray the Liturgy of the Hours several times every day, and there are distinct sessions (called offices) that take place over the course of the day. Religious brothers and sisters traditionally began around 3 AM with the Office of Readings, followed by Morning Prayer (Lauds) at sunrise, Mid Morning Prayer (Terce) at 9:00, Midday Prayer (Sext) at high noon, Mid Afternoon Prayer (None) at the 3:00, Evening Prayer (Vespers) at sundown, and Night Prayer (Compline) at bedtime. Secular priests usually recite five offices (eliminating Terce and None), while deacons recite minimally the “hinge” offices, which are Morning and Evening Prayer. With the Vatican II reforms, the lay faithful were also encouraged to recite the Liturgy of the Hours, as it is considered the Prayer of the Church. As you pointed out in your question, psalms and canticles (poetic passages from sacred scripture) form the foundation of each office, and there are usually three per office. The psalms are amazing collection of songs (i.e. designed to be sung), and in them, the sacred writers poured out their hearts to God. The writers were not afraid or ashamed to say what was on their mind: they were joyful, depressed, sick, sad, angry, hurt – you name it, they felt it. You are absolutely correct that the psalms being used for a given office may not at all reflect what you’re experiencing at the moment. There is a method to their madness, however: we pray the psalms as a faith community, and whenever possible, people should assemble as a group to recite the divine offices. (Our parish recites Morning Prayer on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, for example.) At any given moment of the day, literally hundreds of people around the globe will be praying the psalms for various offices, and it is a safe bet that each psalm will be of particular relevance to a significant percentage of those people. We bind ourselves spiritually with those who are being touched profoundly by the words of the psalm, especially our brothers and sisters who are emotionally downcast, suffering from illness or loss, undergoing temptation or a dark night of the soul. It used to cost upwards of $200 to get the four-volume set of the Roman Breviary, but thanks to modern technology, there are apps that not only give free access to all the offices, but they also take the guesswork out of which psalms and readings to use. As it’s free, I’d recommend iBreviary to get started, but there are also reasonably priced apps (such as Divine Office) that include the hymns used at the beginning of each office and full recordings of the spoken parts. Divine Office even has a feature that shows how many people are praying with you around the world at that time … that figure only represents those who are using their app. It is also useful to get help from parishioners who are experienced at reciting the offices, so drop me a line if you’d like to talk with someone on how to get started.
